ILO 2016 Global Media Competition on “Breaking Stereotypes on Labour Migration” (USD 4,000+ Prize)

The International Labour Organization (ILO) launches a global media competition to recognize exemplary media coverage on labour migration.

The objective of the competition is to recognize exemplary media coverage on labour migration by encouraging professional journalists to produce written articles or videos/multimedia that while not overlooking the negative aspects (e.g. often a hard reality of exploitation and violation of human and labour rights), also show the positive results of fair labour migration governance, and highlight and highlight key aspects of migration (e.g. recruitment) as well as the positive contribution of migrant workers to countries of origin, transit and destination.

This second global media competition “Breaking Stereotypes on Labour Migration” is organized by the International Labour Organization in collaboration with the International Trade Union Confederation, the International Organization of Employers, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Federation of Journalists, Equal Times, Solidarity Center, Human Rights Watch, and Migrant Forum in Asia.

The competition starts on 14 September 2016 and closes on 31 October 2016. Professional journalists are invited to submit one piece of their work to one of the two following categories:

written articles (online or print articles)
videos/multimedia

Articles should not exceed 2000 and videos/multimedia should not be longer than 5 minutes. Submissions must have been created and published between 1 January 2015 and 31 October 2016 to qualify.

Prizes

Two winners will be selected in each category; and each winner will receive a prize of $1000.
Winning entries will be featured on ILO website and widely promoted as an example of good journalism.

Eligibility:

All professional journalists are invited to send a written article that does not exceed
2000 words, or video/multimedia with a maximum duration o 5 minutes, that addresses labour migration related issues.

Requirements

To enter the competition, please fill in the online entry form before 31 October 2016 (latest 23:59, Central European Time).
Entries are accepted in three languages: English, French, and Spanish. Entries in other languages will be accepted provided that the applicant presents a faithful translation in one of the three languages mentioned above.
Winners will be officially announced on 18 December to mark International Migrants Day.

The Youth Employment Network (YEN), an interagency initiative of the United Nations, International Labour Organization, and World Bank, and Making Cents International have partnered to launch a new online competition called Project Impact!

According to the World Bank, as much as 40% of youth employment projects have no impact on labor market outcomes for youth. The Youth Employment Network (YEN) wants to help reduce this percentage and see more projects impact youth positively.

The reality is that even the best program plans will face challenges in successful implementation as they respond to the realities on the ground. Many organizations have learned valuable lessons both when projects succeed and fail. Sharing these lessons from the field could help other projects to increase their impact.

This is why YEN has launched a new online competition called Project Impact! to gather these important lessons and share them with our community of practitioners.

YEN is seeking submissions from any youth employment project anywhere in the world. The projects with the most insightful lessons will receive a cash award and be featured at the 2013 Global Youth Economic Opportunities in Washington DC.

The overarching focus of the competition is on rural youth and increasing opportunities in rural areas. Projects must either be based in rural areas or show that the lessons learnt are relevant to rural youth. The projects with the most insightful lessons will receive a cash award and be featured at the 2013 Global Youth Economic Opportunities in Washington DC.

Who can submit an entry?

The competition is open to anyone working on a youth employment project in any country. The competition is therefore open to all practitioners whether within or outside Making Cents and YEN.

The individual applicant must be personally involved in the youth employment project and they must have the consent of the project manager to submit an entry on that project.

The project that is discussed in the Smart Note must be targeted at young people.

YEN and Making Cents reserve the right for either organization and their partners to verify the authenticity of a
project and their Smart Note before awarding any prize.

Verification may require the organization to provide documents proving the existence and results of the organization, or a field visit conducted by YEN, Making Cents, or its partners in the field.

How long is this competition running?

The competition will have 2 rounds. The deadlines for submitting entries, voting and the date for announcing winners will be shown on the website as each round is launched.

Round 1: September– December 2012

Round 2: May – July 2013

What topics can the entries cover?

The competition entry should highlight a specific approach that has had significant impact on the labour outcomes of young people.

Applications must fit into one of the following categories:

•Workforce Development
•Adolescent Girls and Young Women
•Youth- Inclusive Financial Services and Financial Capabilities
•Monitoring, Evaluation, and Impact Assessment
•Youth Enterprise Development

Here you will be able to download the guidelines and submit an entry form. Make sure you have the written agreement of the project manager to before submitting an entry.

What are the awards for the competition?

An award valued at $800 will be offered to the first place winner, $500 to the second place winner, and $300 to the third place winner.

In addition, some entry forms may be recognized with a title of Special Mention. The entry forms awarded with the first place, second place, third place and special mention awards will be turned into Smart Notes and published on the YEN Marketplace and Making Cents International websites, and feature a short biography of the author.

What is the deadline to enter ?

The deadline to enter is June 14, 2013 at 24:00 GMT and the deadline for voting is June 28, 2013 at 24:00 GMT.

The results will be announced on July 5, 2013.

Youth to Youth Replication Fund for Youth-led Organizations in East Africa (Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya)

The Youth Entrepreneurship Facility’s Y2Y² Replication Fund is a competitive grant scheme open to youth-led organizations in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya to replicate the most innovative entrepreneurship development project ideas from the first two rounds of the Youth-to-Youth (Y2Y) Fund which has been implemented since 2010 in East Africa as part of the Youth Entrepreneurship Facility.

The Youth Entrepreneurship Facility is a 5-year initiative by the Africa Commission, implemented jointly by the Youth Employment Network (YEN) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The structure and operating principles of the original Youth-to-Youth Fund model are demonstrated in the diagram below. Youth-led organizations are funded and supported by the Y2Y Fund secretariat to implement innovative projects which they have designed to provide a package of services to young people to empower them to become entrepreneurs.

The package of services offered by the grantee organizations typically includes a combination of entrepreneurship, soft skills and technical skills training, support for the start-ups to access finance, and other interventions and features, such as mentorships, apprenticeships, information sharing, group formation and formalization. Many of the projects have identified a niche market that is easy for youth-led start-ups to enter or target a special youth group with their services that have strong motivation and potential to become entrepreneurs.

As part of the new Youth-to-Youth² Replication Fund, youth-led organization are invited to apply to implement one of the 14 most innovative of these project ideas that were implemented as part of the original Fund, tailoring the original ideas to fit the new context and new target group and introducing new features and innovations to it.

The best replication proposals will receive grants of USD $5,000 – $10,000 along with technical assistance from the Youth Entrepreneurship Facility.

YEF is looking for organizations with demonstrable experience in implementing similar projects with positive results; organizations with strong financial management, project management, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting experience.
