Promoting the work and advancing the role of women in the news media across the globe is critical to transparency and a diversity of voices.

The Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists, the first funding initiative of its kind, enables the IWMF to dramatically expand its support of women journalists. Established with a $4 million gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Fund will support projects including educational opportunities, investigative reporting and media development initiatives.

Funding rounds will open for applications two times each year; applications take approximately 8-10 weeks to process after the application closes on August 5th. Applicants may apply for concurrently for Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories and the Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists.

The fund was designed to help women journalists by providing grantees support to:

  • Expose under-reported but critical global issues
  • Undertake ambitious projects that challenge traditional media narratives
  • Develop field-based expertise and strengthen careers
  • Pursue training and leadership opportunities
  • Launch entrepreneurial news projects or acquire the skill to do so

Eligibility

  • Woman-identifying journalists from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply.
  • Professional Journalism must be the applicant’s primary profession.
  • Applicants must have three or more years of professional journalism experience.
  • Teams of journalists may apply, however the submission must be  from a woman journalist and her team must include at least 50% women.

International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories 2018 ($5,000 USD)

The IWMF’s Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories, sponsored by The Secular Society, is a new funding initiative supporting journalism produced by and about women. In an era of increased globalization, the need for varied coverage of gendered topics is critical to a free and representative press. These grants will be a catalyst for reporting on untold stories surrounding issues that impact women and girls’ daily lives worldwide.

Through programs, fellowships, and grants the IWMF empowers women journalists with the training, support, and network to become leaders in the news industry. The IWMF recognizes that promoting the work and advancing the role of women in the news media is critical to transparency and that women journalists remain underrepresented in both media organizations and bylines across the world. Consequently, stories about women and the issues that affect their lives remain severely underreported. The IWMF’s Reporting Grants on Women’s Stories initiative empowers journalists to access untold stories through new means of funding that emphasizes gender balanced reporting.

Eligibility

  • Women journalists from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply.
  • Professional Journalism must be the applicant’s primary profession.
  • Applicants must have three or more years of professional journalism experience.

These grants provide opportunities for women journalists to pursue international stories of importance through gender-sensitive coverage of underreported topics.

  • Grants will average $5,000 USD.
  • Grants will be awarded to cover reporting-related costs including travel (flights, ground transportation, drivers), logistics, visa fees, and payment for fixers/translators.
  • All applications must be filled out online via the IWMF’s online application system.

The IWMF will accept applications twice-yearly. Please keep this is mind when creating proposed project timelines. Due to the large influx of applications, the IWMF can not consider time sensitive proposals. Please refer to the application close date for each application cycle, and expect grants to be disseminated 6 – 10 weeks following the application close. Applicants may apply for concurrently for Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories and the Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists.

  • If applicable, teams of journalists may apply, but the team leader must be a woman journalist and the group must include at least 50 percent women.

  • Develop field-based expertise and strengthen careers

The IWMF’s Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists is an incredible resource for talented reporters and will make a real difference in the field of journalism. Beginning in 2015, the IWMF will make an annual total of $230,000 worth of grants to support women journalists in their projects and endeavors. The fund is not limited in either the grant dollar amount or the number of grants awarded within the annual total. There will be up two rounds of funding this year.
