Promoting the work and advancing the role of women in the news media across the globe is critical to transparency and a diversity of voices.

The Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists, the first funding initiative of its kind, enables the IWMF to dramatically expand its support of women journalists. Established with a $4 million gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Fund will support projects including educational opportunities, investigative reporting and media development initiatives.

Funding rounds will open for applications two times each year; applications take approximately 8-10 weeks to process after the application closes on August 5th. Applicants may apply for concurrently for Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories and the Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists.

The fund was designed to help women journalists by providing grantees support to:

  • Expose under-reported but critical global issues
  • Undertake ambitious projects that challenge traditional media narratives
  • Develop field-based expertise and strengthen careers
  • Pursue training and leadership opportunities
  • Launch entrepreneurial news projects or acquire the skill to do so

Eligibility

  • Woman-identifying journalists from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply.
  • Professional Journalism must be the applicant’s primary profession.
  • Applicants must have three or more years of professional journalism experience.
  • Teams of journalists may apply, however the submission must be  from a woman journalist and her team must include at least 50% women.

2018 National Geographic/Buffett Awards for Leadership in Conservation ($25,000 grant & Funded to Washington, D.C.)

The annual National Geographic/Buffett Awards for Leadership in Conservation were established by the Society and The Howard G. Buffett Foundation to recognize and celebrate unsung heroes working in the field. Two awards are presented each year: one for achievement in Africa (established in 2002) and the other for achievement in Latin America (established in 2005).

Recipients of these awards have demonstrated outstanding leadership in managing and protecting the natural resources in their regions and countries. In addition, they are each inspirational conservation advocates who serve as role models and mentors.

Requirements:

  • Nominee must be a citizen of the country where he/she develops the conservation work
  • Nominee must be an accomplished individual who has created positive change in his/her community through conservation
  • Buffett Awards are NOT lifetime achievement awards, nor are they early career awards. Thus nominees must be at the peak of their careers as conservation leaders

  • Preference will be given to nominees who have not received multiple conservation awards
  • Preference will be given to nominees with species-focused conservation efforts
Benefits
  • The awardees chosen each year are honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., and receive a one-time grant of $25,000 to support their ongoing work.
 Selection:
  • Award recipients are chosen from nominations submitted to the Committee for Research and Exploration, which screens each nominee through a peer-review process.

2016 National Geographic Society /Buffett Award for Leadership in African Conservation.

The National Geographic Society is currently soliciting nominations for the 2016 Buffett Award for Leadership in African Conservation.

Since 2002, the award has honored the unsung heroes of conservation, celebrating the recipient’s achievements and supporting ongoing work in conserving nature or culture in Africa. The award includes a $25,000 grant.

Past recipients of the National Geographic Society/Buffett Award have conducted

Nomination Process:

  • Award recipients are chosen from nominations submitted to National Geographic.
  • After nominations are screened by advisors and other conservation experts, a selection of names is forwarded to the Howard G. Buffett Foundation for review.
  • Final selection is made by the National Geographic Society.

The award was established through a generous gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Mr. Buffett is a farmer, businessman, conservationist, and photographer. He serves on the NGS Council of Advisors and in 2007 was named Ambassador Against Hunger by the UN World Food Program.

How to Submit Nominations

  • To submit a nomination, please complete the online nomination form below, including a description of achievements that merit the award.
  • Be sure to include details about the nominee’s major conservation successes in the face of unique challenges. Nominations must be received no later than January 22, 2016.
  • You can also download a nomination form and email it to Dr. Catherine Workman at [email protected].
  • The award will be presented at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2016.

2015 IWMF African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative Fellowship (Reporting Trips to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Tanzania Depart in June)

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is pleased to announce two upcoming reporting trips to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Tanzania.
Two groups of six women journalists each will travel to Tanzania or Eastern DRC to report on themes of democracy and governance from June 10 – 22, 2015. Reporting fellows will begin their trip in Nairobi, Kenya, where they will complete comprehensive security training and an orientation about the Initiative with briefings from regional experts.Fellows will then depart for one week of in-country reporting, during which time they will have the opportunity to network with other journalists, report independently and collaboratively with their peers, and gain access to a variety of sources and sites related to the trip theme.

The IWMF designed this program to support journalists interested in pursuing stories that go beyond the well-established path of political instability, armed conflicts, and humanitarian crisis in the region. The African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative was created in 2014, building on the success of earlier IWMF reporting trips to the Western Sahara and DRC.

The African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative is funded by a generous gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

ELIGIBILTY:

  • Applicants must be affiliated or freelance women journalists with at least 3 years of professional experience in journalism working in print, broadcast, or digital media.
  • All nationalities are welcome to apply, but non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate support from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.

The IWMF will accept online applications from March 9 – 29, 2015.

REPORTING TRIP DATES:

June 9 – 22, 2015

ABOUT THE REPORTING TRIPS TO THE DRC AND TANZANIA:

  • Fellows begin their trip in Nairobi, Kenya, where they will complete comprehensive security training and an orientation about the African Great Lakes region.
  • Fellows then depart for one week of in-country independent reporting in either Tanzania or the DRC, they will have the opportunity to network with local journalists, collaborate with international peers, and meet with the sources and discover sites relevant to their reporting.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS AND EXPENSES:

  • The IWMF arranges travel and in-country logistics for all Fellows.
  • The IWMF also covers fellowship-related within the framework of the reporting trip including, visas, travel, lodging, meals and fixers/interpreters, unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.
