2016/2017 Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarships for Undergraduate, Graduate & PhD Study in Germany (Spring 2016)

The Heinrich Böll Foundation awards scholarships to German and foreign students in accordance with the guidelines issued by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt). Scholarships are awarded for the regular period of study.

The Heinrich Boll Foundation grants scholarships is awarded to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences or universities of the arts.

By March 1, 2016 interested candidates can apply for:

undergraduate scholarship for German and German-educated applicants (Bildungsinländer/innen) from universities of applied science (Fachhochschulen)
undergraduate scholarship for German and German-educated applicants (Bildungsinländer/innen) scholarships from universities and universities of applied science (Fachhochschulen) for the journalism programme “Medienvielfalt, anders“
graduate scholarships for international students
doctoral scholarships for German and German-educated applicants (Bildungsinländer/innen) and for international students
doctoral scholarships in the focus programme “Transformation Research” for German and for international students
undergraduate and graduate scholarships for refugees who are studying, or wish to study in Germany at any kind of university and regardless of their number of semester

Requirements:

Undergraduate/Graduate

Master’s degree only; proof of first professional qualification must be provided
Proof of Proficiency in German Level B2 or DSH 2 (with certificate)
€750 per month plus various individual allowances

Doctoral:

Proof of admission to doctoral studies by a state or state-recognised university, as a rule in Germany, must be included with the application
Two years as a rule, may be extended twice at most by half a year.
Proof of Proficiency in German Level B2 or DSH 2 (with certificate)
€1, 000 per month, plus € 100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances

1. General student scholarships for German and German-educated applicants (Bildungsinländer/innen (1)):

Students in all subjects who are pursuing a FIRST DEGREE (Bachelor, Staatsexamen, Diplom) and who earned their university entrance qualification (2) in Germany:

You may apply before beginning your first degree (Bachelor, Staatsexamen, Diplom) or at any time up to the end of your third “Fachsemester”.
Special (but not exclusive) target groups are: first-generation students, women, members of ethnic minorities, applicants from universities of applied science (Fachhochschulen)

APPLICANTS FOR A DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP (PHD)

1. Doctoral students in all subjects who earned their university entrance qualification in Germany (Germans nationals and Bildungsinländer/innen (1)):

At the time of application, the applicant must have been accepted as a doctoral student by a state-recognised institution of higher education in Germany or another EU country.

2. Doctoral scholarships: Focus programme “Transformation Research“

Doctoral students from Germany who would like to apply for the focus programme “Transformation Research”

Selection Procedure:

The Heinrich Böll Foundation’s selection procedure for scholarship applicants consists of three stages:

Submission of written application documents
An interview with a liaison lecturer (telephone interviews may also be held)
Attendance at a selection workshop in Berlin consisting of a one-to-one interview and a group discussion

Eligibility Criteria:

For an Undergraduate and Graduate Students:

General student scholarships for German and German-educated applicants
Student scholarship
International students on a MASTERS course in any subject who earned their university entrance qualification outside Germany and are studying, or wish to study, in Germany.

For Doctoral Students:

Doctoral students in all subjects who earned their university entrance qualification in Germany.
International doctoral students in all subjects who are non-EU citizens, who earned the university entrance qualification outside the EU, and who are pursuing, or wish to pursue, doctoral studies in Germany.

Good or very good knowledge of German is required; you must supply documentary evidence.
The selection workshops are generally held in German. If a scholarship is granted, intensive German courses may be funded.

Benefits:

€750 per month, plus € 100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances (Non-EU citizens)
€597 plus €300 book money per month (German and EU Citizens)
For scholarship-holders only: Funding is available for limited periods spent abroad for purpose of study

What: Regional Autumn School “Natural Resource Rights in the Arab Middle East and North Africa”

Where: Amman, Jordan
When: November 23 – 27, 2014.
Cost: Travel and accommodation costs of the participants will be covered by the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

The Autumn School is designed to build the capacities of the participants and to stir a debate about urgent current policy topics. It will also provide the international lecturers with information about and viewpoints from the region, and offer an excellent platform for exchanging ideas, opinions, arguments and sharing experiences across the region. The program shall promote networking among civil society actors, researchers,and activists in the region working in the fields of resource rights, governance, climate, gender and environment.

Requirements

This Autumn School inter alia addresses junior professionals, postgraduates, activists, and researchers working at NGO’s, civil society organizations, think tanks or other institutions from Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
The age range is between 20 and 35 years.
The Autumn School will be conducted in Arabic and English with simultaneous translation.
Good command of the English language is highly important since preparation material will be circulated before the Autumn School, a large part of which will consist of English literature.
The participants are therefore asked to indicate their English level in the application form.

Cost:

Travel and accommodation costs of the participants will be covered by the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

Application Process:

To be considered, an application should include the attached application form (available at www.ps.boell.org, www.lb.boell.org, www.tn.boell.org, and ma.boell.org) and a Curriculum Vita as well as a short paper (2 pages maximum).
The paper should focus on the topic of the Summer School and show the applicant’s knowledge as well as their ability to work independently and creatively.
To this end, the applicant should choose a topic from within the subject area and point out its relevance to their local or national context, e.g. by introducing an exemplary project, a current debate etc.
This can be written in form of an essay or a short academic paper.
