Are you an innovator? Are you up for a challenge? Do you want to have a positive impact on society?Enter the #HackTheGerms innovation competition!

ADCEM Pharmaceuticals, DRASA, the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) of Pan-Atlantic University, eLab, and the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) Nigeria are looking for innovative designs for community hand sanitizer dispensers.

THE CHALLENGE

  • There is a lack of basic hygiene practices in the rural and urban communities of Nigeria. With a population of more than 190 million people and an already overburdened healthcare system, this means that Nigeria is at high risk of infectious disease outbreaks.
  • Hand hygiene is usually only prioritized during outbreaks. For example, during Nigeria’s Ebola outbreak, hand sanitizer was everywhere and people were using it. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case.
  • There is a lack of high-quality, locally-produced hand sanitizers and dispensers for people to use.

THE SOLUTION

The goal of this competition is to address the challenge above by developing a dispenser that will ensure ongoing availability and access to hand sanitizer to help reduce the spread of infectious diseases and improve the health of Nigeria’s rural and urban communities.

WHY SANITIZER?

DRASA has partnered with ADCEM Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare to develop locally-manufactured infection control and hygiene products – starting with hand sanitizer that meets international standards. The winning dispenser design will support the distribution of this locally-manufactured product.

PRIZES

Semi-Finalists:

  • Participation in a workshop in Lagos during Global Entrepreneurship Week in November 2017 to connect with experts and pitch your idea

Winner:

  • Free trip to the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Istanbul, Turkey in April 2018 to pitch your innovation to a global audience
  • Participation in the eLab Social Innovation Accelerator for support (access to mentors, executive coaches, marketing and financial experts, etc.)

DESIGN CRITERIA

  • Innovative hand sanitizer dispenser design (new concept or revision of existing concept)
  • Must be able to be produced in Nigeria
  • Cost-effective, scalable solution
  • Environmentally-friendly

Global Entrepreneurship Network Launches Platform to Manage Startup Competitions.

The Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) have announced the launch of its new online platform to unleash ideas and power startup competitions around the world. The launch coincides with the first day of Global Entrepreneurship Week that takes place November 16th through Nov. 22nd.

Startup Compete is a global networking site and competition platform for aspiring entrepreneurs, mentors and advisors to connect with each other and bring potential business ideas to market.

“Hundreds, if not thousands, of competitions are taking place over the next seven days alone as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, This platform makes it simple for organizers, but more importantly, it helps budding entrepreneurs sharpen their skills and make connections that can turn a small idea into a global brand.” said Jonathan Ortmans, president of the Global Entrepreneurship Network.

GEN acquired the site, previously called iStart, from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which had run it since 2009. Since that time, GEN has used the site to setup, manage and judge Startup Open, a competition to recognize some of the world’s most promising new startups.

To date, the competition platform has hosted 624 startup competitions with 29,394 business ideas submitted.

Startup Compete also provides entrepreneurs of all stages with a chance to showcase their business through profiles that help them build a stronger network of resources, get constructive feedback and meet potential partners. The site currently has more than 14,300 profiles with business ideas posted by entrepreneurs from 154 countries.

“The Global Entrepreneurship Network is a strong proponent of experiential learning opportunities,” said Steven Rodriguez, startup community manager for GEN. “We believe that combining those opportunities with global connections to potential collaborators and mentors greatly increases an entrepreneur’s chance for success.”

2015 Muzinda Hub Business Plan Competition for African Entrepreneurs

As a part of Muzinda Hub’s efforts to support African entrepreneurs during Global Entrepreneur Week, the hub is having a Business Plan Competition.
 

Muzinda is Zimbabwe’s first entrepreneurship and innovation Hub; a one-stop shop for idea development, innovation and digital skills development. These ideas will then be turned into solutions and business cases for job creation, wealth creation and sustainable social impact.

The Hub’s initiative seek to capacitate the youth with both an investment in human capital through training and mentorship programs that connect Zimbabwe’s youth to opportunities within the emerging knowledge economy.

Requirements

  • The idea must be at concept stage or at very early stage prototype.
  • The proposal must be for a profitable business idea.
  • The idea must be scalable within an African context.
  • The business proposal must be for a web or app based business idea.

Anzisha Prize announces 2015 finalists for $75,000 African youth entrepreneurship award

African Leadership Academy, in partnership with The MasterCard Foundation, is proud to announce 12 accomplished young entrepreneurs as finalists for the 2015 Anzisha Prize. The Anzisha Prize team scoured far and wide in an extensive search for African entrepreneurial talent between the ages of 15 and 22.

The 12 finalists were selected from an impressive initial pool of 494 young entrepreneurs, up from 339 applications in 2014. Now in its fifth year, The Anzisha Prize will be celebrating these outstanding young people during Global Entrepreneurship Week joining the worldwide festivities. Finalists for the Anzisha Prize win a share of US$75,000 and access to ongoing support to scale their enterprises and expand their impact.

The 12 finalists will be flown to Johannesburg for the 2015 Anzisha Week taking place from 12 – 18 November 2015 during which they will receive intensive training from African Leadership Academy’s renowned Entrepreneurial Leadership faculty and engage with industry leaders as mentors.

A panel of judges from across the entrepreneurial sphere will deliberate to select the grand prize-winners at a gala function to be held on the evening of 17 November 2015. The finalists will grow the pool of Anzisha Fellows to 57 and receive ongoing support in the form of business consulting, professional development training and access to broader networking opportunities to accelerate the growth of their ventures and impact.

The 2015 finalists are:

1.         Blessing Fortune Kwomo, 19, Nigeria. Co-founder of De Rehoboths Therapeutic Studio which extends home-based health care through tailored family action plans for treating illness and addressing root causes to empower families to live healthier within the context of their surroundings/ circumstances.

2.         Chantal Butare, 21, Rwanda. Founder of Kinazi Dairy Cooperative (KIDACO) offering market access to 3,250 farmers through 10 milk collectors. Chantal packages and sells the milk for cattle owners in the community who have received cows in a government program, but have no market access.

3.         Chris Kwekowe, 22, Nigeria. Founder of Slatecube, an e-learning platform that allows learners to study ICT-related course work and be certified at their convenience, with 200 active users on the platform this year.

4.         Daniel Mukisa, 21, Uganda. Co-founder of Transporter Company, provider of delivery services in Kampala using own branded fleet of  30 motorbikes, carrying out around 150 deliveries daily for corporate clients.

5.         Fabrice Alomo, 22, Cameroon. Founder of MyAconnect, which is a web platform that aims to ease trade in Africa by digitizing what and how people buy, sell, and pay, through four user-friendly applications, with 128 companies currently utilizing the platforms.

6.         Farai Munjoma, 18, Zimbabwe. Co-founder of Shasha Iseminar, providing access to courseware content, past examination questions and answers, and career guidance to high school age kids. He also offers school fees contribution to kids from revenues earned, and carries out projects at orphanages.

7.         George Mtemahanji, 22, Tanzania. Co-founder of SunSweet Solar, which designs, plans, organizes and brings solar energy to rural Tanzania.  One of his projects was the construction of the largest solar energy system in Kilombero, at Benignis Girls Secondary School of Ifakara.

8.         Hidaya Ibrahim, 21, Ethiopia. Co-founder of Qine Association for Promoting Education Quality, an education venture that organizes capacity building activities for students to increase critical thinking, analytical research and writing skills, and convenes educational sector players for unique consultation on the quality of Ethiopian education.

9.         Karidas Tshintsholo, 20, South Africa. Co-founder of Push Ismokol’, a clothing brand that employs six people in the Ekangala township of Pretoria, with significant pent up demand due to savvy marketing techniques.

10.       Mabel Suglo, 22, Ghana. Co-founder of Echo Shoes, foot-wear business specializing in designing and making shoes from recycled waste, producing 30 pairs of shoes a month, and engaging persons with disabilities in the production process.

11.       Sirjeff Dennis, 21, Tanzania. Founder of Jefren Afgrifriend Solutions (JAS) Poultry farming, raising 1,500 broiler chickens a month, and selling100 150kg bags of organic fertilizer a month.

12.       Vanessa Zommi, 19, Cameroon. Co-founder of Emerald Moringa Tea aimed at managing diabetes in her community by providing products which contain key antioxidants, currently producing 15 kg of output per month.

Global Youth Entrepreneurs Summit 2015 Bangladesh is an event of Global Entrepreneurship Week, which is going to be the world’s biggest platform for entrepreneurs this year. Global Youth Entrepreneurs Summit 2015 Bangladesh (GYES) aims to focus and support the innovative ideas of the youth Entrepreneurs.

The summit is the first of its kind to be organized in this coastal region. It will not only lead to encourage youth to be change makers, but will also lead to positive socio-economic development. Bangladesh is a land of opportunity, however many don’t get a chance to showcase their ideas due to the lack of opportunities available. GYES aims to bring out the actual gems from all over the country, and provide a platform to the youth entrepreneurs, so that they can show the world their ideas, struggles and achievements.

South Africa launches Startup Nations South Africa- A collaborative Ecosystem for Entrepeneurs

South Africa  became the first African country to launch Startup Nations South Africa (SUNSA), which is a collaborative effort by founding partners, The Innovation Hub, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Wits Business School, aimed at contributing towards building a robust entrepreneurship ecosystem and vibrant sustainable entrepreneurship culture.

South Africa joins a global network of Start Up Nations such as Startup Britain, Startup Chile, Startup Malaysia, Startup China, Startup Norway, Startup Australia and more recently Startup Brazil, Startup Vietnam and Startup Korea.

Startup Nations is an entrepreneurship revolution, focused on advancing the national agenda for entrepreneurship and the creation of a sustainable environment where start-ups and small businesses can meaningfully contribute to the economic and social development of South Africa.

As part of the Startup Nations movement, Startup Nations South Africa will work closely with an international network of entrepreneurship capacity development experts to advance the local entrepreneurship movement.

Speaking at the launch event, Minister Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Small Business said,

“The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2012 annual survey reminds us that entrepreneurship levels in our country are the lowest they have been in three years. Global Entrepreneurship Week Strengthens Support for African Entrepreneurs

New Grant from John Templeton Foundation Will Help Map Ecosystem and Resources Across Continent

Global Entrepreneurship Week and the John Templeton Foundation are teaming up to support African entrepreneurs in their efforts to start and scale new businesses.

Already, 34 African countries celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week each November with thousands of events, activities and competitions helping inspire, connect and mentor entrepreneurs at all levels. A new grant from the Templeton Foundation will empower teams in at least 10 of those countries to increase their work throughout the year by: launching a continental grassroots entrepreneurial ecosystem mapping initiative; developing a go-to African entrepreneurship resource library; and creating a new set of African entrepreneur role models.

“Too often, great individual programs and efforts fall short of their full potential because of knowledge gaps and a lack of cohesion between efforts to help burgeoning startup ecosystems,” said Jonathan Ortmans, president of Global Entrepreneurship Week. “This partnership will make a difference for bright entrepreneurial minds by giving them the tools, connections and support that they need to create local economic opportunities and begin changing the world’s perception of business in Africa.”

For GEW, the Templeton partnership comes at the same time as an increase in support for its partnership with the U.S. State Department around the LIONS@FRICA program outlined on Africa.co. The effort seeks to spur entrepreneurial growth in sub-Saharan Africa by supporting 100,000 entrepreneurs by 2020. Global Entrepreneurship Week is a founding partner of the program, along with the U.S. State Department, Microsoft, Nokia, the African Development Bank, DEMO and more.

“We are excited that our grant will enable the organizers of Global Entrepreneur Week to extend opportunities to a larger number of entrepreneurs in Africa,” said Dr. Roberta Herzberg, assistant director for Individual Freedom and Free Markets at the Templeton Foundation.

“We look forward to seeing the array of possibilities such opportunities will unleash in the marketplace.”

Get in the Ring:The worldwide investment competition.

What
International competition initiated by the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship, where entrepreneurs try to secure an investment up to €1,000,000 by pitching in front of prominent international investors.

Goal
To bring the most promising entrepreneurs from around the world in contact with investors and to inspire visitors to start their entrepreneurial journey.

When
Between July and November, with the grand finale on the 22nd of November

Get in the Ring is a non-profit event concept, initiated by the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship to bring the most promising entrepreneurs from around the world in contact with investors and to inspire visitors to start their entrepreneurial journey.

The Get in the Ring organisation consists of The Investment Battle, the international competition in which entrepreneurs battle to secure their future investment; new in 2013 is Get in the Ring Concepts, independently organised events which use the battle concept of Get in the Ring.

Get in the Ring is a great opportunity for startups to meet fellow entrepreneurs, international top investors and potential customers. Besides the network opportunities, startups get the chance to pitch their business idea in front of top investors and secure investments of up to €1,000,000.

In order to participate startups need to meet the following criteria

  • Exists no longer than 5 years
  • Be proficient in the English language
  • Seeking an investment of €100,000 to €1,000,000
  • Have a scalable and innovative business idea or model

The Global Entrepreneurship Summer School is a collaborative project of the four leading university-based Entrepreneurship Centers in Munich (LMU Entrepreneurship Center (LMU EC), Ludwig Maximilians University Munich UnternehmerTUM, Center for Innovation and Business Creation, Technical University of Munich Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (SCE), University of Applied Sciences Munich).

During the Summer School the student teams develop ideas that have both a sustainable impact for society and a self-sustaining, profitable business model. The students learn about entrepreneurship, develop their own sustainable business ideas and build a long-lasting network of international excellent and entrepreneurial students.

The Global Entrepreneurship Summer Schools fosters the important role of education, entrepreneurship and networking for a sustainable development.

Who can apply?

You have to be enrolled in any university at any time during 2013 and you have to be between 18 – 27 years old. Example: If you are enrolled only until February 2013 you can apply even if you won’t be enrolled in September 2013.”Enrolled” applies in our definition also to MBA or PhD students.

Application process

This year we will accept 35 outstanding students from around the world who will get an invitation to Munich. In addition we will accept 15 virtual participants. All applications will go through a very strict, but fair selection process. The deadline for Early Bird applications will be April 30, 2013. The regular deadline will be May 31, 2013 (GMT -12). We will inform everybody at the latest during the last week of June about their application status.

Accommodation

Participants won’t have to pay for their accommodation. We will provide accommodation from Sep 17 until Sep 27 either in the guesthouse of the LMU or at other places such as appartments of other participants from Munich.

Global Scholarships

International students who are invited to Munich will automatically receive a travel scholarship. The Global Entrepreneurship Summer School will contribute 50% of your total travel costs (mostly flight tickets) up to a cap of € 500,-. Just to remind you, accommodation, travel during your stay and lots of food during the week is also included – for free!

Food & travel in Munich

We will provide you for free some exclusive dinners as well as many snacks and coffee during the whole week. In addition we will cover your travel expenses for the public transport in Munich throughout the whole week.

Tuition

Only if you are a student from Germany or we will charge atutuion fee of € 79,- for early bird applicants and € 119,- for regular applicants per selected participant. If you can provide accommodation to an international participant you won’t have to pay a tuition fee – no matter when you apply.
