The Global Development Awards Competition is administered by GDN, funded under the Policy and Human Resources Development Fund (PHRD) trust fund managed by the World Bank, and generously supported by the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan. 

The 2021 edition of the Global Development Awards Competition will feature two categories:

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (2021)

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) is a competitive research grant program that identifies and funds outstanding research proposals that have a high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for addressing development issues in low and middle-income countries (World Bank definition).

The Global Development Network (GDN) invites researchers from low-income or middle-income countries to submit research proposals within the theme, ‘International trade and the promotion of biodiversity.’

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (2021)

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (MIDP) is a competitive grant program that supports non-profit Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in low or lower-middle-income countries (World Bank definition) to recognize the innovative approach of their projects. The first prize winner is also eligible to compete under the Japan Social Development Fund for an additional grant of up to US$ 200,000 to pilot their innovative work at a larger scale. 

The Global Development Network (GDN) invites non-profit NGOs and CSOs from low and lower-middle-income countries to submit project applications within the following three themes: ‘Universal health coverage and COVID,’ ‘Community-driven, climate-related, disaster risk reduction in rural areas’ and ‘Quality urban infrastructure and community driven governance.’

The last date for submission is 9 June 2021 (Indian Standard Time 6:00 PM). IMPORTANT DATES

●      Announcement of Desk review results (1st shortlisted applications): 30 June 2021
●      Announcement of Business review results (2nd shortlisted applications): 16 July 2021

●      Announcement of finalists: 15 September 2021
●      Announcement of winners: 24 October 2021 Finalists are expected to be available during the following periods

  • 20-21 October 2021 – Communications training
  • 22-24 October 2021 – Session at the physical event for the presentation of their projects to the jur

Global Development Awards Competition : The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development 2019 ( US$30,000 Prize & Funded to Germany)

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development is a competitive research grant program under the Global Development Awards Competition 2019. The Awards Competition is administered by GDN, funded under the Policy and Human Resources Development Fund (PHRD) trust fund managed by the World Bank and generously supported by the Government of Japan. This award program identifies and funds outstanding research proposals in developing and transition countries with high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for addressing development issues.

The program provides grants under two main categories: The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development and the Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project. The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development 2019 is now accepting applications.

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development 2019

The main theme of the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development 2019 is ‘Doing research in developing countries: the role of non-academic actors, new communication platforms and leadership in social sciences.’ Research Proposals for the Award will be considered in the following three sub-themes:

  1. Understanding and measuring the role of non-academic researchers in development
  2. The role of social media in the production, diffusion, and uptake of development research in developing countries
  3. The role of research leadership in advancing evidence-informed debate in developing countries

Benefits

The three winning projects will receive grants worth US$ 45,000. The first prize winner will receive a grant of US$ 30,000. The second prize and third prize winners will receive a grant of US$ 10,000 and US$ 5,000 respectively. The funds will be used to support the research work proposed by the winners towards the completion of their research.

Finalists will be invited to travel and present their proposals at the 19th Global Development Conference ‘Knowledge for Sustainable Development: the Research–Policy Nexus’ being held in Bonn (Germany), 23 to 25 October 2019. Travel and expenses for one representative from each three short-listed proposals will be covered by GDN.

The awards will be given to the organization(s)/researcher(s) whose proposals to undertake research in any one of the three research sub-themes (described below) holds the greatest promise for improving our understanding of development issues and puts forth clear, articulate and well researched policy implications to address relevant development problems.

Global Development Awards Competition 2017 for Researchers from Developing Countries.

The Global Development Awards Competition is an innovative award scheme launched by GDN with the generous support from the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan. The Awards Competition recognizes excellence in policy-oriented research, supports research capacity development of researchers in developing countries and funds innovative social development projects benefiting marginalized groups in the developing world.Since its inception in 2000, GDN has provided US$ 3.8 million in awards and travel grants to finalists and winners.

The winners of the current round will be chosen by an eminent jury at GDN’s next conferenceto be held in New Delhi, India, in December 2017; an event attended by international development practitioners where finalists will present their proposals. Finalists from both award categories will be invited to present their proposals at the conference.

Category 1: Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD)

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) is a competitive research grant program that identifies and funds outstanding research proposals submitted by researchers from developing countries and transition economies that have a high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for addressing development issues in any of the three research sub-themes.

First Prize: US$ 30,000; Second Prize: US$ 10,000; Third Prize: US$ 5,000

Research Proposals for the Award will be considered in following sub-themes:

1.      Skilling for Agriculture

2.      Skilling for Manufacturing

3.      Skilling for Digital Technologies

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Eligible countries for the ORD competition are those classified as low-income or middle-income countries.
  • Open only to researchers who are nationals of an eligible country
  • Open to citizens of eligible countries who are temporarily based in a non-eligible country but not for more than five years as of 16 July, 2017
  • The upper age limit for all applicants is 45 years as of 16 July, 2017
  • Staff members of multilateral and bilateral organizations are NOT eligible to apply
  • Previous and current employees of GDN or its Regional Network Partners (RNPs) are NOT eligible to apply up till 5 years from the completion of their tenure. Previous GDN Board Members, project mentors and members of evaluation teams are NOT eligible to apply
  • Similar proposals or papers resulting as products from full or partial GDN funded activities cannot be submitted for this competition
  • Past ORD winners and finalists are not eligible to apply with the same or similar research proposal. Winners are not eligible to apply for a period of 3 years subsequent to their submission of a successful proposal
  • Past and current AMC reviewers are not eligible to take part in the competition.

Category 2: Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (MIDP)

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project is a competitive grant program that provides grants worth US$ 45,000 to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) located in developing countries torecognize the innovative approach of their grassroots projects*. The Award targets projects currently at the stage of implementation, and which have a high potential for impact targeting exceptionally marginalized and disadvantaged groups located in developing and transition countries. Proposals are based on similar themes as the first category.

*The first prize winner is also eligible to compete under the Japan Social Development Fund for an additional grant of up to US$ 200,000 to scale up their innovative work.

First Prize: US$ 30,000; Second Prize: US$ 10,000; Third Prize: US$ 5,000

Innovative development projects for the Award will be considered in following sub-themes:

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The MIDP Award is open to all development projects being implemented in low-income countries and lower-middle-income countries.
  • The project must be managed by a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with its headquarters in one of the above eligible countries. The NGO must be non-profit.
  • The project implementation must have started before 01 June, 2016.
  • Submissions concerning a recently started project or only a project idea or a feasibility or baseline study will not be considered.
  • Submissions for funding conferences (either in part or in full) will not be considered.
  • Applicants from previous years (except winners) may re-apply, but they must update the application to include new aspects of the project.
  • Previous MIDP winners are not eligible to apply.
