DAAD Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience – P.R.I.M.E. 2018 (Funded to Germany)

In 2014 the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) initiated the programme “Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience” (PRIME) to support the international mobility of postdoctoral researchers by temporary positions at German universities in place of conventional scholarships.

The programme has been funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Union (EU/FP7/Marie Curie Actions/COFUND). Funding is provided for 18 months, in which 12 months have to be spent abroad and 6 months (re-integration phase) at a German university. The re-integration phase is mandatory. The German university administrates the salary during the whole funding period.

Programme Evaluation

After completing three PRIME application/selection cycles, DAAD has commissioned an intermediate programme evaluation in December 2016. The evaluators’ final report has been adopted by the DAAD Directorate in July 2017.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eligibility to the programme is defined by four criteria:
  • Applicants must have completed their PhD before starting the fellowship;
  • Applicants must comply with the programme’s mobility rule, i.e. they are free to choose any country (except Germany) as destination for their research stay abroad, provided they have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in that country for more than 12 months in total during the three years preceding the application deadline of 31 August 2018.
  • Time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention is not taken into account;
  • Applicants who are already permanently employed by the research milieu where the research training activities are planned to take place and that is recruiting them may not be supported;
  • Applicants must accept that the research stay abroad and the return phase to Germany are both mandatory parts of the programme
Duration
  • The support is provided for 18 months, of which the first 12 months have to be spent abroad and the remaining six months in Germany (reintegration phase). Support Funding is provided through an 18-month temporary job position at the selected German university. The position will be remunerated according to the appropriate rate for postdoctoral researchers (according to the German pay scale“ TV-L E13”).
  • The specific level within the salary group “TV-L E 13” will be determined by the employing universities on the basis of the previous work experience of the fellows. DAAD will provide the respective universities with a grant agreement to cover the costs for the regular salary and an additional monthly expatriate allowance for the research stay abroad.

Benefits:

  • An additional lump sum travel allowance in accordance with DAAD rates for the selected candidate and, if applicable, accompanying spouse or partner (with in the meaning of the German law on civil partnerships ) and children will be paid directly by DAAD.
  • Successful applicants will be invited to an orientation seminar before the start of the fellowship, together with current fellows, alumni and representatives of other funding institutions and possibly other researchers from science and business.

Timeline

AGNES 2018 Intra-Africa Mobility Grant for Junior Researchers from sub-Saharan African

On behalf of the President of African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES), TWAS-ROSSA is pleased to announce that the Call for Applications for its funding programme: the ‘AGNES Intra-Africa Mobility Grant for Junior Researchers’ is now open. The Grant is made possible through funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and with support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH).

The AGNES Mobility Grant for Junior Researchers aims to strengthen the scientific capacity and networking in Africa through active co-operation of AGNES and potential AGNES members. It further supports the alumni of the AvH in their efforts towards coaching and mentoring high potential junior researchers, helping them to access international networks of scientific excellence.

AGNES aims to strengthen the scientific capacity and networking in Africa through active co-operation of AGNES and potential AGNES members. The programme enables researchers studying towards a Masters or PhD from sub-Saharan African countries to spend research stays between 1 and 2 months at a university/research institute in other sub-Saharan African country.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Direct applications from junior researchers only will be considered for the AGNES Mobility Grant.
  • The applicant may be from any academic discipline but must be officially registered for the Masters or the Doctoral degree at a university/tertiary institute in sub-Sahara Africa, and must be a national of a sub-Saharan African country. Applicants must demonstrate clearly that their work is relevant towards development in sub-Saharan African countries and cannot be conducted in the home country.
  • Only applicants with an identified scientific host and mutually agreed-upon proposal/work schedule will be considered for the Grant.

Application Procedure:

Interested junior scientists should submit their electronic applications directly to the AGNES
Desk via email: [email protected] by 06th April 2018. Please ensure that the application
and all supporting documents reach the AGNES desk by midnight South African time.
Complete applications must include the following:
  • Letter of motivation from the junior scientist (applicant) with a short outline of the proposed research activity and a work schedule for achieving the aim(s) of the research project at the host institution.
  • The scientific host must agree in writing to the proposal and time schedule.
  • A standard CV of the applicant (use the template attached) and offical proof of registration for the postgraduate degree (only current Masters and Doctoral students are eligible).
– Copy of the official Academic transcripts of applicant, reflecting the grades obtained in
the undergraduate and any postgraduate study. Please supply the official explanation of the grading system.
– A list of publications (include an e-copy of at least the Title/Author page), or other proof
of research outputs ( e.g. Abstracts for conference posters, talks, presentations, etc.).
– Travel costs (by land or economy class flight): supply two quotes for the journey
(including return travel) between the applicant’s country of residence and the country of
the host institute). In general, the cheapest option shall be chosen.
– Estimated cost of living (rent, meals, local transport, health insurance) at the host institute.
It is expected that applicants themselves will conclude a valid health insurance for the research stay. Scientific hosts and host institutes are expected to assist applicants in finding affordable accommodation and to advise them on establishing subsistence estimates.
– Invitation letter from the scientific host:
(i) confirming that a place to work will be available at the indicated period,
(ii) a binding declaration from the host institution, requesting an. amount of the research cost allowance. A maximum amount of EUR 100 per month and EUR 200 per month, respectively, is earmarked for Humanities & Social Sciences, and Natural & Life Sciences and Engineering Sciences.

Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience – P.R.I.M.E. 2017 (Fully Funded to Germany)

In 2014 the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) initiated the P.R.I.M.E. programme to support the international mobility of postdoctoral researchers by temporary positions at German universities in place of conventional fellowships. The programme has been funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Union (EU).
After three selection cycles that were co-financed by the EU, DAAD has successfully established this funding instrument and will now continue the programme primarily with support from the national funding provider, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany (BMBF).
Postdoctoral researchers of all nationalities, who see their long-term career perspectives in Germany, will be given the opportunity to combine employment at a German university with a research stay abroad.

Duration:

  • The support is provided for 18 months, of which the first 12 months have to be spent abroad and the remaining six months in Germany (reintegration phase).

Requirements:

  • Applications may be made by persons of all nationalities.
  • Applications may be submitted before completion of the PhD. However, the PhD must be completed before the start of the funding period.
  • There are no restrictions as to the country of destination as long as the applicant has not stayed in the respective country for more than 12 months in total during the three years preceding the application deadline of 15 May 2017.
  • Appropriate host institutions in Germany and abroad must have been identified at the time of application. The contact with these institutions and the agreement on modalities are the responsibility of the applicant.
  • The host institution in Germany has to be a university.
  • The German host university must confirm in writing that the postdoc will be employed for the whole funding period, should the application be successful.

Benefits:

  • Funding is provided through an 18-month temporary job position at the selected German university.
  • The position will be remunerated according to the appropriate rate for postdoctoral researchers at the respective university (usually according to the German pay scale “TV-L E13”).
  • DAAD will provide the respective universities with a grant agreement to cover the costs for the regular salary and an additional expatriate allowance for the 12-month research stay abroad.
  • An additional lump sum travel allowance in accordance with DAAD rates for the selected candidate and accompanying spouse or partner (within the meaning of the German law on civil partnerships) and children will be paid directly by DAAD.

Application Procedure:

The following documents have to be submitted:
1. completed application form;
2. curriculum vitae with no chronological gaps and in tabular form in accordance with EU standards http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/documents/curriculum-vitae;
3. short summary of the research project with a clearly recognizable working title and an indication of keywords. The summary should enable the assignment to a specific subject area and be suitable for use as preliminary information for potential reviewers. The length of the summary should not exceed 2,000 characters (including spaces);
4. a detailed and independently prepared research proposal upon which both the German and foreign host institutions have agreed.

Timeline:

The application deadline is on 15 May 2017.
The selection committee meeting will approx. take place on 11/12 October 2017.
The earliest starting date for funding is 1 January 2018.
