Georg Forster Research Award 2024 for Researchers from Developing Countries (€60,000)

Applications are now open for the 2024 Georg Forster Research Award. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation annually grants Georg Forster Research Awards to internationally renowned academics from developing and transition countries in recognition of their academic record to date. The research award was named for renowned German ethnologist Georg Forster (1754–1794) and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Requirements

  • Nominations for a Georg Forster Research Award may be initiated by established researchers at research institutions in Germany.
  • Humboldt Foundation award winners working abroad are also eligible to submit nominations jointly with a researcher working in Germany.

Eligible for nomination are researchers whose fundamental discoveries, new theories or findings have had a lasting effect on their discipline beyond their immediate research area and who will continue to contribute to developing research-based approaches to the specific challenges of developing and emerging countries. The individual nominated must additionally meet the following criteria:

  • The nominee’s academic achievements must be internationally recognised and proven by corresponding successes in research.
  • The nominee may not previously have received an award from the Humboldt Foundation for her/his academic work.
  • The nominee must be a citizen of a developing or transition country
    (excluding PR China and India, see list of countries (PDF)). The nominee must have lived and worked in one of these countries for at least five years at the time of nomination.

Award Details

  • The award amount is €60,000. Award winners are also invited to conduct a research project of their choice at a research institution in Germany in cooperation with specialist colleagues there.
  • The award enables a total stay of between six months and a full year, which can be split into multiple stays. If required, expenditures (such as travel or language courses) are covered in the context of the invitation to stay in Germany for research purposes.
  • The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation may provide further funding of up to €10,000 to integrate female junior researchers from the award winners’ home countries.

The main selection criteria include:

  • the nominee’s outstanding international reputation as a researcher
  • research findings with a demonstrable impact that extends beyond the immediate field of work
  • the significance of the awarding of a research prize in relation to the developmental relevance of the research  (The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals can serve as a point of reference here.)
  • the nominee’s multiplier effect in research, teaching, and science management and in other development-related processes outside the research field

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation presents up to six Georg Forster Research Awards each year to internationally outstanding researchers from developing and emerging countries in recognition of their academic record to date. The research award was named for renowned German ethnologist Georg Forster (1754–1794) and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Benefits

  • The award amount is €60,000. Award winners are also invited to conduct a research project of their choice at a research institution in Germany in cooperation with specialist colleagues there.
  • The award enables a total stay of between six months and a full year, which can be split into multiple stays.
  • If required, we will provide further funding of up to €25,000 to finance academic collaboration – in particular to cover the costs of attending academic conferences, of material resources such as specialist literature or scientific equipment at the home institution, or of including junior researchers.

The independent Selection Committee comprised of researchers of all disciplines generally meets in the summer of the following year to select the award winner. The Committee’s decision is based on the independent peer reviews, the nominees’ academic qualifications and the significance of their research for the development of their home country.

The main selection criteria include:

  • the nominee’s outstanding international reputation as a researcher
  • research findings with a demonstrable impact that extends beyond the immediate field of work
  • the significance of the awarding of a research prize in relation to the developmental relevance of the research  (The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals can serve as a point of reference here.)
  • the nominee’s multiplier effect in research, teaching, and science management and in other development-related processes outside the research field

The award is intended to support the long-term promotion of outstanding scientific multipliers in transition and developing countries whose research will contribute to improving living conditions in their countries of origin.

The individual nominated must additionally meet the following criteria:

Self-nominations are not possible, nor may you nominate close relatives or your marital/registered partner. We particularly encourage the nomination of qualified female researchers.

Georg Forster Research Award 2020 for Researchers from Developing Countries (€60,000)

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is granting up to six Georg Forster Research Awards annually to internationally renowned academics from developing and transition countries in recognition of their entire academic record to date. Funding for the award is being provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The Georg Forster Research Award is granted in recognition of a researcher’s entire achievements to date to academics of all disciplines whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and beyond and who are expected to continue developing research-based solutions to the specific challenges facing transition and developing countries.

Nominees must be nationals of a developing or transition country (excluding People’s Republic of China and India; cf. detailed list of countries). Furthermore, at the time of nomination, they must have had their main residence and place of work in one of these countries for at least five years.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation particularly encourages the nomination of qualified female researchers.

Requirements

  1. The nominee must be recognised internationally as an outstandingly qualified academic (e.g. awards, positive responses to publications, etc.).
  2. The nominee’s future perspectives must indicate that she/he will continue to be an active, academically influential researcher in the coming years with relevance to the development of the nominee’s own county.
  3. The nominee must be exceptionally qualified to continue developing research-based solutions to the specific challenges facing transition and developing countries.
  4. The nominee must be a national of a developing or transition country (excluding People’s Republic of China and India; cf. detailed list of countries). At the time of nomination, he or she must have had his or her main residence and place of work in one of these countries for at least five years.;
  5. Detailed expert opinion (laudation) by an academic working at a research institution in Germany who would like to invite the nominee to spend time researching in Germany.
  6. Two expert reviews one by an important academic from abroad and one by a German scientist/scholar;
  7. The Humboldt Foundation assumes that candidates will abide by the Rules of Good Scientific Practice during the application and sponsorship periods.

Benefits

  • The award amount totals €60,000. In Germany, research awards are generally exempt from income tax under German tax law.

In addition, award winners are invited to conduct a research project of their own choosing in Germany in close collaboration with a specialist colleague. To support the collaboration, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation may grant additional funding of up to €25,000, particularly for participating in scientific conferences, additional material resources, e.g., specialist literature and scientific equipment for the nominee’s own institute, as well as for involving junior researchers.


An independent Selection Committee appointed by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will meet once each summer or autumn to decide on the nominations. which were submitted by 31 October of the preceding year.
