3rd International Olympic Committee (IOC) Young Reporters Programme 2018 Buenos Aires, Argentina (Fully Funded)

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is delighted to announce a third cycle for the
IOC Young Reporters Programme, a sports journalism training programme that will be run during the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018. The Young Reporters initiative will bring 30 young reporters from five continents to the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires (Argentina), 6–18 October 2018, with the programme running from 30 September to 19 October 2018.
Young Reporters will be accredited as “E” press, have access to all the sports, work and
train in the Main Press Centre with all other accredited media, and receive specialised and intensive media training from senior Olympic journalists. Aspiring Young Reporters:
Requirements:
  • will be aged 18 to 24 years old
  • will consist of four participants from each continent (Africa, Americas, Asia,Oceania and Europe)
  • will be 2 male and 2 female reporters from each continent
  • will be studying journalism at college or will be working as reporters
  • will have reporting proficiency in English
  • will have a portfolio and references to complement application.
  • Available to attend the full duration of training

This group of Young Reporters will also be joined by teams from Argentina (the host nation for the YOG 2018) and Switzerland (the host nation for the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020).

Benefits:

  • The IOC will cover the cost of economy airfares, all meals, twin-share hotel accommodation and full tuition by seasoned Olympic journalists, who will act as mentors and coaches.
  • The Young Reporters will arrive in Buenos Aires on 30 September and depart 19 October 2018. Classroom training and lectures will be held from 1 to 5 October 2018, with field training (starting with reporting) as of the Opening Ceremony on 6 October.
  • The Young Reporters will receive intensive class and field training in written, photographic, television, radio and new media reporting on the sport, as well as dedicated forums with guest speakers representing key international media organisations and senior Olympic officials.
    The programme will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the International Broadcast Centre and meetings with Olympic Channel programmers and reporters , who will also be reporting from Buenos Aires.
    The integration of social media, coding and the use of algorithms will form a core component of the Young Reporters’ training, giving participants all the tools required to work in today’s
    evolving news rooms.
    Following the training programme in Buenos Aires, the top 15 Young Reporters, as selected by the Mentors, will be invited to the second stage of training, to be held at the 3rd
    Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland (10–19 January 2020).

Application Procedure:

  • National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will establish their own national selection process and will nominate Young Reporters on the basis of passion, performance and promise. NOCs will submit applicants to their Continental Association by 1 November 2017.
  • Continental Associations will then choose two male and two female participants from the NOC nominees to represent their continent and submit their names to the IOC for consideration.
  • The IOC will announce the successful list of candidates on 12 December 2017, following a one-on-one interview in English and a vetting process with all the candidates

Timeline:

  • 1 November 2017: Deadline for NOCs to nominate candidates (max. 2) to their Continental Association.
  • 2-15 November 2017: Continental Associations to review all applications and select two male and two female participants to represent their continent, with a limit of one Young Reporter per NOC.
  • 15 November 2017 : Deadline for Continental Associations to submit candidate applications and dossiers to the IOC.
  • 16 November– 10 December 2017: IOC carries out the interview process with all applicants. The final decision on the suitability of nominated candidates remains with the IOC
  • 12 December 2017: IOC announces list of participants for the 3rd IOC Young Reporters programme.
  • Feb–Mar 2018: IOC will liaise with Young Reporters for travel arrangements.
  • 30 September 2018: Young Reporters arrive in Buenos Aires.
  • 19 October 2018 : Young Reporters depart Buenos Aires.

Health Systems Global Media Fellowships Programme 2018 for Journalists

Health Systems Global (HSG) has launched a call for its first Media Fellowships Programme offering six fellowships to journalists undertaking cutting edge news and reporting on health systems and health policy topics across the world. This is an opportunity for journalists to engage and build relationships within the community and report on some of the biggest issues and challenges facing the global community in a rapidly changing world.

The fellowships will include funded attendance and participation in the Fifth Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in October 2018 and close collaboration and support from health systems research and policy experts. The journalists will be working closely with leading thinkers and practitioners to promote the agenda of Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) and address critical health systems and health policy related topics in their country and region.

The Media Fellowship will begin in January 2018, with fellows beginning research or investigation for a feature piece to be published in a major outlet before September 2018. This published piece will be considered for the inaugural Health Systems Global Media Prize.

Benefits

The Fellowship will include:

  • Certificate and citation from Health Systems Global

  • Profiling on Health Systems Global website and social media

  • Full access and support to participate in the Global Symposium in Liverpool in September 2018, including satellite and skills sessions (flights, accommodation and subsistence for five days)

  • Opportunity to interview leading thinkers/actors within health systems

  • Full membership of Health Systems Global for 1 year

  • Chance to win the inaugural Health Systems Global Media Prize for their feature piece.

Fellows will be expected to*:

  • Place at least 1 piece ahead of HSR2018, for consideration for the prize, by the panel in October 2018 (it must be published and submitted to the panel by September 2018). The byline will need to express that this is their submission for the HSG Media Fellowship.

  • Express their interest in who they would like interview during HSR2018

  • Place at least 1 piece during the symposium (or within 2 weeks of the event)

  • Place at least 1 piece within 2 months of the end of the symposium.

*All pieces must speak to the symposium themes

Additional support to successful applicants will include:

  • Introductory welcome webinar for successful applicants

  • Support in developing the pitch idea contributed at the application stage

  • A toolkit to strengthen their work on reactive pieces, e.g. access to HSG spokespeople people (including people in their country and region); glossary of key terms.

Applicants will need to:

  • Pitch one idea for a feature piece

  • Have experience in public policy; health or human development and/or have a clear interest in health systems and policy by providing 3-5 published articles/podcasts/radio shows/blogs

  • Be employed or regularly freelance for an accredited outlet, as verified by an editor.

HSG will accept applications from:

  • Print journalists – Newspaper/magazine (to submit at least 3 pieces from recognised media outlet with applicant by-line on the article)

  • Broadcast journalists and film-makers (to submit at least 3 audio or video files of broadcast programmes)

  • Freelance journalists (to submit at least 3 pieces from recognised media outlet with applicant byline on the article or audio or video files of three broadcast programmes)

  • eNews journalists (official news website); (to submit at least 3 pieces from recognised media outlet with applicant byline on the article).

Selection process

The media fellows will be selected by a panel which will include a representative from the HSG Board; the HSG media lead; a leading journalist and a representative from a specialist media organisation. The panel will review all the applications and announce the successful applicants by December 2017.

This will be open to six professional journalists working for outlets based in different countries, in each of the six World Health Organization regions (one from each region will be selected):

  • Africa

  • The Americas

  • South-East Asia

  • Europe

  • Eastern Mediterranean

  • Western Pacific.

The Wellcome Trust Master’s Fellowships scheme provides junior researchers with the opportunity to gain research experience and training at Master’s degree level. The scheme aims to support research that will improve public health and tropical medicine at a local, national and global level.

Hochschule Hof Scholarships 2017 for international students to study in Germany.

Under the condition of reception of financial means from the Bavarian Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (Bayerische Staatsministerium für Bildung und Kultus, Wissenschaft und Kunst) and the DAAD (Stibet III), Hochschule Hof gives semester or yearly scholarships to qualified foreign students in need for the summer semester 2017 and/ or winter
semester 2017/18.
Benefits:
  • The scholarship depends on the financial means provided available for the respective semester. It lies between 100,00 € – 659,00 € per month.
  •  The scholarships shall provide financial support for foreign students to cover extra costs for living and study materials during their studies at Hochschule Hof.
Requirements:
Applicants must fulfil the following requirements:
  • international students must be enrolled as full-time students or double- degree students (not possible for exchange students) at the Hochschule Hof for the respective semester (summer semester 2017 or winter semester 2017/18).
  • international students must be academically (previous examination performance) and personally qualified.
  • Foreign students enrolled in Bachelor courses must have achieved a minimum of 90 ECTS to be eligible. Please attach proof.
