Australia Awards are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders for development. Australia Awards aim to promote knowledge, education links and enduring ties between Australia, our neighbours and the global community.

Australia engages with developing countries at government, business, professional and community levels. Australia Awards Fellowships offer Australian organisations, from all sectors, the opportunity to deepen and broaden their links with leaders and professionals in developing countries. By providing opportunities for Fellows to undertake short term study and professional development in Australia.

Fellowships are for current and future leaders and mid-career professionals, who will be in a position to advance priority foreign affairs and development issues. Fellowship activities are aimed at providing high-quality training, exchange of expertise, skills and knowledge, and opportunities to enhance networks on issues of shared interest.

Activities can include a combination of short-term study and/or training, professional development, networking and work experience. Grant funding of up to $35,000 per Fellow is offered on a competitive basis to Australian organisations to host Fellows from eligible countries.

Australia Awards Fellowships target senior officials and mid-career professionals, who in the short to medium term, will be in a position to advance priority foreign affairs and development issues.

To be eligible, all Fellows nominated by Australian organizations must:

  • be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing the Fellowship;
  • not have Australian permanent residence status or be applying for permanent residency;
  • be a citizen of, and residing in, an eligible developing country;
  • not be current serving military personnel;
  • not be married or engaged to, or be a de facto of a person who holds, or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency;
  • have been working in their country of citizenship and in an area relevant to the Fellowship
  • activities preceding the date of the proposed commencement of their Fellowship;
  • be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for a DFAT Student Visa 576;
  • and
  • be able to participate in the nominated Fellowship activities at the time and for the duration proposed by the Australian organisation

Australian organisations may nominate Fellows who are citizens of the following countries:

The Thiel Fellowship brings together some of the world’s most creative and motivated young people, and helps them bring their most ambitious ideas and projects to life. Thiel Fellows are given a no-strings-attached grant of $100,000 to skip college and focus on their work, their research, and their self-education. They are mentored by our network of visionary thinkers, investors, scientists, and entrepreneurs, who provide guidance and business connections that can’t be replicated in any classroom. Rather than just studying, you’re doing.

The Thiel Fellowship (originally named 20 under 20) is a fellowship created by Peter Thiel through the Thiel Foundation. The fellowship is intended for students under the age of 20 and offers them a total of $100,000 over two years as well as guidance and other resources to drop out of college and pursue other work, which could involve scientific research, creating a startup, or working on a social movement. Selection for the fellowship is through a competitive annual process, with about 20-30 Fellows selected annually.

During the two-year fellowship, the Thiel Foundation and its network of mentors provide guidance and support to help the Thiel Fellows build their scientific, technical, and entrepreneurial ideas. While fellows are expected to work on their innovative ideas full-time, they determine their specific paths; this often means starting a company, but could also entail doing freelance work, developing a social movement, interning at another company, or pursuing research and development independently.

Since the Thiel Fellowship began in 2011, more than sixty young people have been awarded Thiel Fellowships and pursued projects to push back the boundaries of fields such as nuclear and alternative energy, mobile health, robotics, biotechnology, 3D printing, synthetic biology, public health, education, finance, scientific equipment, gaming, network security, data storage, electrical transmission and software.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Candidates must be 19 years old or younger as of December 31st of the application year.
  • The ideal candidate has ideas that simply cannot wait.
  • She or he wants to change the world and has already started to do it in some fashion.
  • Thiel Fellowship wants fellows who dream big and have clear plans, who take risks and learn from mistakes, who think long-term and like to tinker. Inspire us.

The 2013/2014 Nestle Nutrition Institute Postgraduate Fellowship.

Nestle Nutrition Institute Postgraduate Fellowship is awarded to professionals interested in carrying out research in the fields of young women’s health, mother and child health and nutrition. The fellowship grants are awarded to health professionals applying for post-graduate research training.

Fellowship Worth

  • The NNI will cover the fellow’s roundtrip travel to the host Institution, lodging expenses and a monthly stipend in addition to any host institution fees and some study related expenses up to 20’000 CHF.
  • The amount of 20’000 CHF applies for the longer length projects.
  • A proportion of this amount will be paid to shorter duration projects. The money will be given to the host Institution which will disburse it to the fellow. In no case will any money be given directly from the NNI to the fellow.

Administrative requirements

  • Fellowships are available for post graduate qualifications only.
  • Fellow has to be affiliated with an academic/clinical institution
  • Potential candidates should submit an application describing their interest in participating in the NNI Pediatric Nutrition Fellowship (to access Application Form click here).
  • The application form must be accompanied by the following:
    • 1. Details of their current level of training,
    • 2. Curriculum Vitae,
    • 3. A plan of the proposed training/activity clearly indicating its specific outcomes and
    • 4. Two letters of recommendation (1 from the institution where the candidate is working and 1 from the host institution*).
    • 5. Letter stating intent to return to the home country upon completion of the training program.

*Host Institution (Sites) – any scientific institution offering a program in the fields of Maternal and/or Child Health and Nutrition

Assessment of Applications

A Panel of members of the NNI Faculty with relevant expertise in a given field will assess all Fellowship applications. The following will apply:

  • Priority consideration for this prestigious fellowship will be given to candidates in junior positions from emerging countries.
  • The candidates’ history of previous or alternate grants will be taken into consideration.
  • Candidates will be notified of the NNI’s decision by letter.

Exclusions

The Panel will not accept applications, which are submitted by:

  • Candidates who have already spent more than 12 months outside their home country during the 3 years preceding the application. Exceptions could be made if the applicant can justify how this additional training will supplement the one(s) already obtained.
  • Candidates who have already left their country at the time of applying for the fellowship.
  • Candidates who have completed more than one half of any training programme they may already be enrolled in.
  • Candidates who, at the time of submitting their application, already have a grant from any other training program.
  • Applications will not be entertained if the applicant’s home country law prohibits the nature of this activity.

Conditions

  • Successful candidates will be required to start their training within 1 year of being notified of the fellowship award.
  • Duration of the support for the research training lasts for a minimum of 6 weeks to a maximum of 6 months.
  • Upon certification, fellowship awardees return to their home countries.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences Fellowship for Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholars from Developing Countries Programme 2013.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Fellowship for Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholars from Developing Countries Programme is designed to enhance scientific cooperation between CAS-affiliated research institutions and academic institutions in developing countries, enabling awardees to participate in the scientific research programs of the CAS-affiliated institutions or to conduct collaborative research projects agreed upon by a host institution of CAS.

PROGRAM DETAILS

The Fellowship Programme includes two categories:

• Category A: Short-term Visiting Scholarship, tenable for 3-6 months, and

• Category B: Post-doctoral Fellowship, tenable for 2 years.

For Short-term Visiting Scholarship (Category A)

CAS will provide a monthly stipend of RMB 22,000 (pre-tax), which covers all living costs, such as accommodation, food, local transportation and health insurance in China.

For Post-doctoral Fellowship (Category B)

CAS will provide a yearly stipend of RMB 150,000 (pre-tax), covering all living costs, such as accommodation, food, local transportation and health insurance in China.

In addition, an economy-class round-trip international airfare (RMB 15,000 at the maximum) following the most direct route between the airport nearest to the awardee’s residence and that nearest to the host institution will be provided by the Programme through the host institution.

ELIGIBILITY

 

Applicants for Postdoctoral Fellowship (Category B) must meet the following criteria:

　  • be nationals of a developing country (other than China);

　  •  hold a PhD degree in a field of natural sciences;

　  • provide evidence of proficiency in English or Chinese;

　  • have worked out a research proposal accepted by a research professor (or associate professor) at a CAS-affiliated institution who agrees to be the host;

　  • Be strongly recommended by the host institution;

　  • Agreeing to abide by the laws of the People’s Republic of China and the rules & regulations of the host institution

Applicants for Short-term Visiting Scholarship (Category A) must meet all of the above-mentioned criteria and, in the meantime, hold a regular research assignment with at least five years of postdoctoral research experience.

APPLICATION

There are two approaches to submitting applications for the Fellowship:

　　 • by a CAS-affiliated institution as the host of the applicant, or

　  　• by an international strategic partner institution which has been identified by the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS.

Application Forms (see Attachment) must be completed and submitted in duplicates in English, along with a completed Recommendation Form completed, signed and sealed by the host institution of CAS) or a recommendation letter signed by the director of an identified international strategic partner institution. In the latter case, an official acceptance letter from the host institution affiliated with CAS is required.

A copy of the applicant’s Curriculum Vita and photocopies of official documents certifying the education qualifications and awards (if any) of the applicant should be submitted as Appendixes to the Application Form.

All applications should be mailed by post in sealed envelopes to the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS.

IMPORTANT

Please note that the application deadline is 15 September. Submissions received later than 15 September will NOT be processed.

Only applications submitted by the host institution or CAS-identified international partner institution are acceptable. Applications submitted directly by the applicants will NOT be accepted.

Incomplete/unsigned applications will NOT be accepted.

Applications will ONLY be acknowledged when processed.

Who: Fellowships are open to print, broadcast and online reporters, photographers, editors and producers with no fewer than five years’ full-time journalism experience. Dart Center Ochberg Fellowships are open to outstanding mid-career journalists working across all media.

Value: The Ochberg Fellowship covers all travel, accommodations and other expenses directly related to program participation. The program does not cover costs related to health insurance or ground transportation in fellows’ home cities.

The Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship is a unique seminar program for senior and mid-career journalists who want to deepen their knowledge of emotional trauma and psychological injury, and improve reporting on violence, conflict and tragedy.

Reporting responsibly and credibly on violence or traumatic events — on street crime and family violence, natural disasters and accidents, war and genocide — is a great challenge. Since 1999 the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, has offered the annual Ochberg Fellowships to outstanding journalists interested in exploring these critical issues.

Fellows attend an intensive weeklong program of seminars and discussions held at Columbia University in New York City. Program activities include briefings by prominent interdisciplinary experts in the trauma and mental health fields; conversations with journalist colleagues on issues of ethics, craft and other aspects of professional practice; and a host of other opportunities for intellectual engagement and peer learning.

The Fellowship is led by a core faculty of prominent journalists and mental health professionals associated with the Dart Center, along with a wide range of visiting faculty. Recent visiting Fellowship faculty have included:

  • Judith Lewis Herman, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and author of Trauma and Recovery.
  • Jonathan Shay, M.D. Ph.D., Clinical Psychiatrist, MacArthur Fellow and author of Achilles in Vietnam and Odysseus in America.
  • Chicago “violence interrupter” Eddie Bocanegra with Alex Kotlowitz, producer of the documentary film “The Interrupters” and author, There Are No Children Here.

  • Steven Southwick, M.D., Glenn H. Greenberg Professor of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine and co-author, Resilience: The Science of Mastering Life’s Greatest Challenges.

The Fellowship was established in 1999 by the Dart Center in partnership with the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.The fellowship is named in honor of psychiatrist Frank Ochberg, M.D., a pioneer in trauma study.

The Ochberg Fellowship covers all travel, accommodations and other expenses directly related to program participation. The program does not cover costs related to health insurance or ground transportation in fellows’ home cities.

ELIGIBILITY

Dart Center Ochberg Fellowships are open to outstanding mid-career journalists working across all media.

Past Fellows have ranged from small-town and regional general-assignment and crime reporters to war photographers and foreign correspondents for international news organizations. Applicants’ work must demonstrate journalistic excellence and a strong track record of covering violence and its impact on individuals, families or communities.

Fellowships are open to print, broadcast and online reporters, photographers, editors and producers with no fewer than five years’ full-time journalism experience. Approximately half of the Fellowship participants are based in North America, with the balance drawn from Central and South America, Europe, the Asia Pacific region, Africa and the Mideast.

All fellowship seminars are conducted in English. Fellows must be fluent in spoken English to participate in the program.

This 2013 online application deadline is October 11, 2013.

The Fellowship program will be held January, 20-25, 2014 at Columbia University in New York City.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants are reviewed by a judging committee comprised of Dart Center staff, Fellowship core faculty and past Fellows. Selection is not based on any single factor. Among judges’ considerations are whether applicants:

  • demonstrate consistent and thoughtful journalistic engagement with issues of violence, conflict, tragedy and their aftermath;
  • have demonstrated journalistic excellence and leadership;
  • will likely benefit personally and professionally from the Fellowship experience and contribute meaningfully to the program.

Other considerations may include geographic and other diversity, and overall group composition.

The judging committee will review applications and select 10-15 fellows for 2013. Selected fellows will be notified by phone and email in mid-November.

The C V Raman International Fellowship for African Researchers- 2013.

The Fellowship provides opportunities for African researchers to conduct collaborative research / training for 1-6 months duration at universities and research institutions in India.

The objective of C V Raman International Fellowship is to provide opportunity for African researchers to  conduct research under the guidance of a host scientist in India in order to advance their own research  capabilities while contributing to the progress of research in India.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA : TERMS & CONDITIONS OF AWARD

(a) Applicant should be a citizen/permanent resident of an eligible African country having  diplomatic relations with India.

(b) Applicant should be actively engaged in research/teaching at any recognized university or  research institution in any one of the African countries.

(c) Minimum Academic Qualifications

  • Doctoral Fellowship: PursuingPh.D in any recognized university or research institution in Africa
  • Visiting Fellowship: Ph.D / M.Tech / M.Sc or 4 to 6 years research/teaching experience
  • Senior Fellowship: Senior Experts / Scientists / Professors

Please Note:
(i) Applicants who have already availed C V Raman International Fellowship in any one of the  previous years are NOT eligible to apply.
(ii) Applicants who had applied in any of the previous years but were unsuccessful or could not avail  it, may re-apply against the current call

(a) Travel Arrangements:

Round-trip air ticket in economy class from the place of employment in respective African country to  the Indian airport nearest to the Indian host institute, through shortest route. Local transport by  road/rail between the nearest airport and the host institute in India.

(b) Sustenance Allowance:

(i) Doctoral Fellowship: ` 40,000/- per month including accommodation.
(ii) Visiting Fellowship: ` 50,000/- per month including accommodation.
(iii) Senior Fellowship : ` 50,000/- per month + accommodation (preferably at host institute guest house / private hotel subject to a limit of ` 2500 per day charges)

(c) Contingency Grant:
(i) Doctoral Fellowship: One time contingency grant of ` 20,000/-
(ii) Visiting Fellowship: One time contingency grant of ` 10,000/-
(iii) Senior Fellowship: One time contingency grant of ` 10,000/- + Local travel in India, as per  approved program with a limit of ` 30, 000

Fund Utilization Guidelines:

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR THE PROGRAM – DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED
• Sustenance allowance to be paid to the candidate by host institute on a monthly basis for  covering living expenses.

• Contingency grant will remain with the host institute and will be given to the candidate as and  when required. The candidate is required to produce original bills and vouchers to the host  institute for availing reimbursements from this grant.

• Contingency grant may be utilized for meeting institutional fee/lab fee, consumable materials,  chemicals, equipment, books and journals, including photostat copies, micro-films, typing,  stationery, postage, field work and travel expenses for the Fellow in connection with approved
research project with approval of host scientist.

• Contingency grant is NOT intended for meeting expenditure on furniture, utensils, items  normally provided by the College/University/Institution and payment of examination or other  fees such as admission/registration/tuition fees etc.

• No funding provision under this fellowship is applicable for –
– Travel expenses of host scientists
– Honorarium for host scientists
– Institution fee/Lab fee

Selection Process and Notification

Selection Process :

Screening of applications will be conducted by an expert selection committee set up by Department of  Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, based on scientific merit and proposed contribution  to advance research in the proposed area/subject.

(b) Notification of selection results :

Selection/ acceptance letters will be sent to all successful candidates after the final announcement of  the selection committee. The result is expected to be announced some time during January/February  2014. Names of fellowship awardees along with their respective host researchers and institutions,  along with their research themes will also be posted on www.indoafrica-cvrf.in.

(c) Placement Process :

(i) Selected applicants are required to finalize their duration of stay in India under this fellowship  in consultation with their respective host scientists and promptly inform FICCI through email at  [email protected]. Applicant may plan their fellowship during April – September 2014.

(ii) Selected applicants will be issued visa and air tickets by the concerned Indian Mission in their  respective home country or from the concerned Mission entrusted under concurrent  accreditation.

(iii) Applicants are required to approach the concerned Indian Missions with copy of their  selection/acceptance letter from DST/FICCI along with all other necessary documents and travel  plan for issue of visa and air tickets.

All fellows are expected to observe the regulations and procedures stipulated below. If the fellow fails  to do so, the fellowship may be withdrawn, as per discretion of Department of Science & Technology or  Ministry of External, Government of India or any one or both of them.

(a) Fellows shall stay in India continuously during the tenure of their fellowship and concentrate on  their research at the host institution. Fellows should not engagein other work, neither paid nor  unpaid, during their fellowship tenures.

(b) Fellows shall follow all rules established by the host institution and DST, prohibiting acts of  research misconduct (e.g. fabricating or falsifying research results), research misuse (e.g. use  research facilities for private purpose or for purposes other than the approved research).

(c) During their fellowship tenures, fellows shall not, either inside or outside the host institution,  infringe in any way on human rights of others, including racial or gender discrimination or other  forms of abuse.

(d) Fellows must submit a research report after completion of his/her tenure duly approved by the  concerned host scientist at [email protected].

Print and TV journalists, infographics designers and developers interested in broadening their understanding of the emerging field of data journalism and retooling their storytelling skills are invited to apply for a health data journalism fellowship at Internews in Kenya.
The 16-week long fellowship, which will commence on 1 August 2013, is designed to equip journalists, infographics designers and developers with new skill sets to produce data driven long-form stories on health issues.
Fellows will get an opportunity to learn how to access, mine, analyze and visualize data using digital tools. They will also gain an appreciation of interconnections in data – with the ultimate aim of unearthing stories buried in data.
The Internews Health Journalism Fellowship, which will explore reporting on malaria, family planning, maternal and child health, and HIV, offers mid-career broadcast and print journalists an opportunity to take time out from the newsroom to enhance and polish their health and data journalism skills while engaging in high quality, high impact health journalism.
As a practical and customised programme, this fellowship focuses on both craft and content. Through one-on-one mentoring, discussions with top data journalists, travel grants, as well as interactions with health experts, policy makers and communities, fellows will be grounded in the principles of health and data journalism. They will also develop story sources and ideas and the capacity to examine the health, cultural, socio-economic, and cultural ramifications of major public health issues.
Fellows will also be exposed to new digital and social media trends, including multimedia storytelling.The journalists will be required to produce data driven TV and print longform stories during the fellowship and after – to be printed and published in their news outlets.
It is expected that the fellowships will significantly build the skills of successful candidates and will provide tangible benefits for the newsrooms to which fellows will return. They will be able to see stories in data, investigate links between issues, and ultimately present their findings in a compelling and audience -friendly manner -thereby enriching their news outlets with a competitive edge.

 

Who should apply?

  • The fellowship is open to TV and print journalists as well as inforgraphics designers and developers with at least three years’ experience working for or contributing to mainstream media in Kenya. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a deep interest in health and investigative journalism.

 

  • Fellows will be selected largely on the basis of previous work and the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to health and data journalism.

Awards

  • During the course of the fellowship, fellows will be given grants to cover travel and research costs relating to specific topics of their choice for broadcast and publication in their media houses.

 

  • The fellows are expected to negotiate for permission for time away from their places of work. Fellows will receive a stipend of Sh400,000 for the duration of the fellowship.

  • A personal statement detailing your experiences, why you qualify for the fellowship and what you aim to accomplish if you are awarded the fellowship. Include specific topics you would like to explore.
  • Details of previous awards or fellowships.
  • At least three samples of health stories published or broadcast.
  • Two letters of support, one from a senior editor and another from a referee familiar with your work. Freelance journalists should send a letter of support from an editor or producer familiar with their recent work

The Intajour Fellowship Program consists of a ten-month-long course called ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ which is comprised of attendance phases as well as e-learning phases. The next fellowship year starts on August 31, 2013. It is a challenging, high-profile program.

If journalism means collecting, evaluating and publishing information, then this definition also applies i n t h e d i g i-tal world. Only the conditions under which reporters and editorial staff pursue this activity are changing. Each technical advance opens up new possibilities for research and publishing. To take advantage of these opportunities journalists must constantly build and update their skills.

Against this background, the International Academy of Journalism (Intajour) is offering the 10-month ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ blended-learning training program.
As Intajour Fellows, journalists from around the world are given an opportunity to update their skills in digital reporting and discuss current media ethics issues.
Intajour strongly believes that freedom of the press requires professionally trained journalists.

The Fellowship Program

In the 10-month ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ Fellowship program, Fellows study the latest developments in the media industry. They update their journalistic skills with a strong emphasis on hands-on training in digital reporting, and discuss ethical issues.

Intajour applies a blended-learning concept consisting of three attendance phases in Germany and two e-learning phases.
All Fellows receive intensive coaching from experienced instructors, and are given the opportunity to network with journalists from Bertelsmann’s media companies.

Skills taught

By participating in the ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ program, Fellows acquire skills in the following fields:

  • Investigative research
  • Journalistic forms of presentation on the internet
  • Technical production of web content
  • Filming and editing webvideos
  • Internet security
  • Journalism and ethics: freedom and responsibility in the media
  • Internet politics

Costs

Fellows receive a stipend from Intajour towards course fees and international travel costs. During the attendance phases the Fellows are accommodated at Intajour’s expense in guesthouses or hotels and receive an adequate meals allowance.

Who can participate?

The ‘Journalism in the Digital World’ program is aimed at professional journalists from countries where press freedom is restricted or where similar training programs are not available. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated their journalistic talent as a member of an editorial team or as a freelancer.

Applicants should be interested in the new technical opportunities for doing research and publishing on the Internet. An understanding of the role of independent media in democratic societies is a given.

The selection and application process

The application and selection process consists of four steps:

  • First step: Online application form
    To apply, please complete the online application form. If you would like to have a look at the form to familiarize yourself with it, you can download a specimen here as a PDF. The deadline is May 3, 2013. Please note that you must fully complete the application form. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Second step: References and additional documents
    Intajour reviews the general suitability of the applicant on the basis of the information given and the attached letter of recommendation. Once suitability has been determined, further documents such as work samples and references will be requested for submission by mid May 2013. At the same time, references will be requested from the contact persons provided.
  • Third step: Interview
    Promising candidates will then be invited for an interview to be conducted either by the Director of Intajour or by Intajour partners in the candidate’s country or region.
  • Fourth step: Selection
    The Intajour Journalism Advisory Council and the Intajour Director will make the final selection of Fellows. The selected journalists will receive a written acceptance letter. Once the selected Fellows have accepted the conditions for participation, the travel documents will be sent to them by post.
The Application Procedure
Applications are accepted, online only, between March and early May of each year. Intajour’s Journalistic Advisory Council selects the Fellows for the year ahead.

The  Peace Revolution Fellowship offers a 14 days intensive training  program providing participants with deeper insight in the relationship between inner peace  and sustainable world peace and enhancing their ability to create peace within their family, professional and social environment.

The training starts with the 42 Days online self-development program on our interactive platform providing you the basic theory and practice; develop the tool for inner peace and learn about the concept of PIPO – INNER PEACE + OUTER PEACE = SUSTAINABLE WORLD PEACE. Through the Online Special OPSyou have the means to share true peace to friends, family, school and your community at large.

The fellowship offers a 14 days intensive training program providing participants with deeper insight in the relationship between inner peace and sustainable world peace and enhancing their ability to create peace within their family, professional and social environment.

Each year, a group of 20-24 emerging leaders from different regions of the world are selected to become Ford Fellows of 92nd Street Y. The program includes a three-week residency in New York City and ongoing communication before and after the residency via telephone and email.

Fellows are expected to complete reading, writing and group assignments prior to their residency to maximize the value of their fellowship experience and after their residency to evaluate its impact and success.
