2014 IDB Group Business Plan Competition for Sub-Saharan African Entrepreneurs.

The Islamic Development Bank Group invites all eligible entrepreneurs from IsDB Group Member Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa region to attend its 1^st Business Plan Competition. The business plan competition is designed in a way to foster entrepreneurship in the Sub-Saharan Africa region via providing;

Seed funding in the form of cash prizes,
Training materials for business plan development,
Mentorship from prominent entrepreneurs,
Networking opportunities with investors

The competition will include two tracks. First, the entrepreneurs who have an idea, research or technology but NOT established their venture yet will compete in the Idea Track. Second, the Growth Track will be for the entrepreneurs, who have already established their venture and looking forward to growing it.

Eligibility

Individual application is allowed but application by teams are highly encouraged. In the case of team application, each team shall select a member who will be the “applicant” for the team in this competition,
The applicant must be a citizen of the IsDB Group Member Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa Region (for the list of the countries, please see the link),
The applicant shall be at least 18 years old and able to read and speak English or French proficiently,
All members of a team can only enter the competition once with one submission,
Team composition adjustments are allowed in Phase 1 and 2 but no changes are allowed after the submission of full business plans,
The products or services offered or intended to be offered should have commercialization potential, be legal, and Shariah-compliant. The following applications will not be accepted

Projects which does not have commercialization potential,
Non-for-profit type projects such as charities, NGOs etc.,
Projects entailing production, sales, promotion, or distribution of the non-shariah compliant products/services (such as alcohol, gambling etc.)

The 1st IDB Business Plan Competition aims at fostering the entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa region, and to encourage new business ideas to flourish. In this regards, the competition will be open to entrepreneurs from 22 different IDB member countries listed below.

The Google Online Marketing Challenge is a unique opportunity for students to experience and create online marketing campaigns using Google AdWords and Google+.

For Whom:

The Challenge is open to student teams of three to six members from undergraduate or graduate programs, regardless of their major.
All students must register under a verified faculty member, lecturer or instructor currently employed by an accredited higher education institute.

Prize:

With a $250 AdWords advertising budget provided by Google, students develop and run an online advertising campaign for a business or non-profit organization over a three week period.

The teams that develop and communicate the most successful campaigns win awesome prizes, including trips to Google offices.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in the optional Google+ Social Media Marketing category by creating and managing a Google+ Page for their clients over a five week period.

Social Entrepreneurs Initiative for West Africa ‘Promoting Integrity in the Education Sector’ Competition (USD 3,000 in Prize)

In collaboration with the Open Society Institute for West Africa (OSIWA), Transparency International is launching a Social Entrepreneurs Initiative (SEI) for West Africa. The initiative aims to support innovative ideas from young people to boost transparency, accountability and the fight corruption in their communities.

Participants should submit proposals for projects that offer an innovative approach to promoting integrity in the education sector. Specifically, the competition invites proposals that address some of the challenges highlighted in TI’s 2013 Global Corruption Report: Education.

The report explores the many faces of corruption in education, such as fake diplomas, buying of grades, and shadow education, and highlights ways it is being challenged.

The competition provides a platform for young entrepreneurs who aspire to create positive change in their communities. With their innovative ideas and leadership, young people can help tackle some of the key challenges of today and offer sustainable solutions for tomorrow.

Eligibility Criteria

Participants between the ages of 18 and 35 can apply.
Participants based in West Africa and from one of the following countries are eligible: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
The proposed projects must have direct impact in at least one of these countries.
Projects should reflect the themes of the Global Corruption Report: Education, and support activities that empower young people to develop change-maker skills such as entrepreneurship, teamwork, and leadership.
Applications must be in English, French or Portuguese.

Prizes

Awards – a total of three, each worth $3000 cash
The winners will be sponsored to participate in the International Anti-Corruption Conference to be held in Tunisia in October 2014
The individuals behind the winning projects will join the SEI network, with each of the projects featured on the IACC SEI page
Application deadline – 10 March 2014.

The UNAOC-EF Summer School, 75 youth leaders from all over the world will be invited to engage in dialogue across borders, build critical skills for global citizenship and strengthen the ability to achieve lasting positive social change.

The UNAOC-EF Summer School 2014 takes place at EF’s New York campus in Tarrytown, NY, USA from 16 to 23 of August 2014.

The week-long summer school brings together 75 youth from across the globe, to address pressing global challenges, within the context of cultural and religious diversity.

The highly interactive program will immerse participants in the essentials of global citizenship. Seminars, workshops, and roundtable discussions will challenge participants and increase their impact as leaders in their fields.

The UNAOC-EF Summer School provides an opportunity to explore critical global issues and collaborate to develop solutions to these problems.

The application process includes the submission of a resume as well as essay questions on past achievements and future impact potential.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old on 24 August 2014— the start of the UNAOC – EF Summer School.

Costs Covered by the UNAOC-EF Summer School

Selected participants of the UNAOC- EF Summer School 2014 will be provided with the following:

international travel to and from the international airport closest to their residence(this economy class international ticket will follow the most direct route with nounnecessary stopovers),
shared accommodation (double or triple rooms with participants of the same gender) while in Tarrytown,
meals during the official portions of the Summer School,
full event access during the entire week of the Summer School,
shuttles from and to the airport in New York City,
the cost of US and transit visas(if applicable),
the cost of vaccinations required to enter the US (if applicable), and
the cost of medical insurance required to enter the US (if applicable).

Participants will cover the following expenses themselves:

local transportation to and from the international airport close to their residence,
cost of meals and other incidental expenses while traveling from and to their residence to New York City,
cost of meals and other incidental expenses incurred outside of the official portions of the Summer School, and
any souvenirs, phone calls, equipment, etc. purchased for the Summer School or during the Summer School

Selection Criteria

The selection of the 75 participants will be based on responses to essay questions regarding motivation as well as past and future involvement in issues to be tackled during the Summer School.

All Bar None is an initiative designed to ensure that young people from countries that were relatively less well represented at the One Young World Summit 2013 have the opportunity to participate in the 2014 Summit in Dublin, Ireland which takes place 15 – 19 October.

The One Young World Summit is an annual Summit where the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGO’s, universities and other forward-thinking organisations are joined by world leaders, acting as the One Young World Counsellors.

At the Summit, delegates debate, formulate and share innovative solutions for the pressing issues the world faces.

Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa (Moremi Initiative) is pleased to announce its annual call for applications for the 2014 Moremi Leadership Empowerment and Development (MILEAD) Fellows Program.

The MILEAD Fellows Program is a long-term leadership development program designed to identify, develop and promote emerging young African Women leaders to attain and thrive in leadership in their community and Africa as a whole.

The program targets dynamic young women interested in developing transformational leadership skills that help them address issues facing women and girls across communities in Africa. The MILEAD Program equips Fellows with the world class knowledge, skills, values and networks they need to succeed as 21st century women leaders. Applications are welcome from young African women between 19 – 25 years of age, living in Africa and the Diaspora.

The MILEAD Fellowship will be awarded to 25 outstanding young women who have exhibited leadership potential in their community, organization, and/or profession.

Each class of MILEAD Fellows consists of twenty-five young women who participate in a yearlong transformational leadership training and community leadership projects with support and mentoring. The one-year curriculum involves approximately 35 days of face-to-face and online training plus the time allocated to mentoring and community service projects.

The MILEAD program includes a three-week summer institute, quarterly online seminars, informal networking, mentoring, community leadership projects and exchange programs with other professionals. The three-week summer institute is a residential training session comprised of lectures, discussions and workshops, visits to institutions, meetings with key leaders, case studies of successful leaders, assigned readings, research, presentations, and internships.

The institute is intensive and highly participatory, providing a supportive learning environment for exchange of best practices and experiences, technical depth, strategy development and skill building. Participants will develop a greater appreciation for their individual leadership styles and capabilities and enhance their understanding of women’s rights issues, advocacy and mentoring

To be eligible for the program, an applicant

must be African, living on the continent or in the Diaspora; agree to participate in all required activities related to MILEAD – beginning with a three-week residential Summer Institute in Ghana; and commit to a community change project.

Applications for 2014/15 are now open.

Australia Awards in Africa (AAA), an initiative of the Australian Government, is a pan-African program of development scholarships and fellowships that offers 1,000 postgraduate scholarships each year to eligible African professionals.

Australia is committed to developing the capacity and leadership skills of Africans to enable them to contribute effectively to development in their home countries. Over the past three years, the number of scholarships available for African professionals has increased ten-fold to a total of 1,000 development awards annually. One-quarter of all Australia’s development scholarships are now directed to Africa.

Australia Awards, a cornerstone of the Australian Government’s development assistance program for Africa, provide access to postgraduate education, training and professional development opportunities for suitably qualified Africans from eligible countries. On their return to the workplace, Australia Awards Alumni are expected to contribute actively to development in their home countries.

Short course training under the Africa Fellowships enables scholars to participate in short courses of up to three months. Training is available for experienced employees from African public, private and non-government organisations (civil society) in the following fields: Agriculture; Health; Mining; Public Policy, including Diplomacy, Organisational and Employee Development, Trade and Public-Private Partnerships.

Award types include:

Short Course Awards are available for studies in a range of priority sectors including Agriculture, Maternal and Child Health, Mining Governance and Public Policy. Studies are conducted at locations in Africa and in Australia for periods up to 3 months. Short course awards are available to eligible applicants from 51 African countries.

Long-Term Awards are postgraduate scholarships that lead to an academic qualification from an Australian university. For studies commencing in 2014, Long-Term Awards are available to eligible applicants from 28 African countries.

Preference will be given to candidates with greater periods of experience.
You possess, as a minimum, a Bachelors degree (or the equivalent) from a recognised Institution of at least 4 years in length with at least a 3rd Class Pass.
Public sector candidates must comply with Government of your country regulations for government employees wishing to apply for scholarships
Public sector, private sector and civil society candidates must provide evidence of completion of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) (for Nigerian candidates- visit adsafrica.com.au for country specific requirements) when they apply.

YouWiN! stands for Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria. It is an innovative business plan competition aimed at job creation by encouraging and supporting aspiring entrepreneurial youth in Nigeria to develop and execute business ideas.

YouWiN! Women was the second edition of the entrepreneurial scheme, which was designed for only female entrepreneurs aged 45 years or less. YouWiN! 3 is the third edition and will feature men and women entrepreneurs in Nigeria between the ages of 18 to 40.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the Business Plan Competition you must satisfy the following criteria

You must be a proven citizen of Nigeria no older than 40 years (proof of identity: International passport/Drivers License/National ID/Voters card required)
You must have a post-secondary school qualification
Your proposed business venture must be within the national borders of Nigeria, and with the intention of employing Nigerian citizens.
Your proposed venture must not entail the production or distribution of weapons, alcoholic beverages, tobacco or/and gambling, or any activities in contradiction with the Nigerian constitution
You must prepare an innovative business concept summary

You must choose to participate in one award pool. There are 6 regional pools on the basis of geo-political zone as identified by market in which you want to do business.
