The Japan Foreign Trade Council  is sponsoring JFTC Essay Competition 2014 to encourage students, young researchers and business people to express their opinions on matters of national and international importance.

Choose One of the Following Topics:

  • Topic 1 — Future of the “SHOSHA” in the Global Economy

  • Topic 2 — Toward Developing Japan’s “Resources” by 2020: A Strategy for Utilizing Them for the Benefit of the World

Prizes:

One Grand Prize of 1,000,000yen
Three Prizes for Excellence of 200,000yen each

The award winners from abroad will be provided with a round trip air ticket to Tokyo, Japan to attend the award ceremony to be held on January 7, 2015.

Eligibility:

  • Anyone can apply for the Essay Competition, regardless of nationality or age.

Language:

  • English (4,000words) or Japanese (10,000characters). Each essay MUST BE accompanied by an essay summary of no more than 400words in English/ 800 Japanese characters.

Notification:

Award winners will be publicly announced on December 12, 2014.
The award-winners from abroad will be provided with a round trip air ticket to Tokyo, Japan to attend the award ceremony to be held on January 7, 2015.

WOLFoundation 2014 Essay Competition ($2,000 Prize)

 The Web of Life Foundation runs an annual competition looking for the best non-technical, English language writing on any themes related to political/social/environmental issues.

Subject and Theme

All essays submitted to the competition must focus on political, social or environmental issues and address the current year’s theme. Essays that are off subject and off theme will be rejected.

The theme for the 2014 competition is “Leadership: What are the characteristics of effective leadership for the 21st Century?”

Eligibility Requirements:

Everyone is welcome. Any one individual may submit up to three entries.

Entry Requirements

Entries should be written in prose in the English language. You can submit essays or short stories, factual commentary or fiction – whichever way and whichever writing style you choose to communicate your ideas. Just make it compelling.

What to submit

  • Essays should be aimed at a general readership and should be non-technical. No footnotes or citations are allowed.
  • Submissions should be no longer than 2,000 words.
  • Essays may have been published before provided you have the necessary permissions to re-publish.
  • DO NOT USE THE THEME TITLE AS THE TITLE OF YOUR ESSAY. BE CREATIVE.

Prize:

  • The winning entry will receive a cash prize of $1,500.
  • A further $500 will be awarded to the second placed entry.
  • Shortlisted entries may be published as a book of collected essays.

2014 Commonwealth Essay CompetitIon for Young Writers.

Are you a writer? Are you interested in the world around you? Do you want your voice to be heard by others? If so, the Commonwealth Essay Competition is definitely for you.

Run by the Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883, the Commonwealth Essay Competition is the world’s oldest and largest schools’ international writing competition. It provides a platform for young people to compete with their peers in a truly global environment.

The theme for the 2014 Commonwealth Essay Competition is ‘Team Commonwealth‘. As athletes gather in Glasgow for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, team spirit will be on display both within and between nations. Young writers are encouraged to explore this theme in fun, academic, witty, and most of all creative ways!

Eligibility

  • Open to all Commonwealth citizens aged 18 and under, the Essay Competition offers young people the opportunity to make their voice heard on a global platform and engage with issues important to them.

Entrants are judged in two age groups, Junior (under 14 years) and Senior (14–18 years)  and must be living in, or be a national of, a Commonwealth country/territory

The 2014 Commonwealth Essay Competition, run in partnership with Cambridge University Press, closes for entries on Thursday 1st May.

Entrants are encouraged to be creative in their response. Answers can be submitted in a number
of formats, for example: poem, letter, folk tale, script or essay – the choice is yours!

The 6th Eco-generation Environmental Essay Competition.

The Save Food Initiative, a partnership between UNEP, FAO and Messe Düsseldorf, is seeking entries for its essay competition “Think.Eat.Save – My Effort to Reduce Foodprint.” The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness among youth of the problem of food waste.

You are all invited to participate.

  • Topic: Think∙Eat∙Save -My effort to reduce Foodprint
  • Eligibility: Anyone who are aged between 13~24

2. Objectives of the Competition

  • To raise awareness among youth of the food waste problem
  • To commemorate and to foster the Think Eat Save campaign
  • To enhance the ability of essay writing at a global standard

3. Requirements

  • Length: 800 words (-20% ~ +20%)
  • Contents : The contents of the essay must be based on individual thoughts,
    experiences, achievements and future plans. Too much outsourced
    scholarly explanations are not recommended.

5. Rules and Regulations

  •  The violation of the copyright is strictly banned. If there is any awarded essay found to be copied from other sources without appropriate permission, the award will be automatically canceled and an official inform will be sent to both of school and home.
  •  All the courtesies should be revealed at the end of the essay.  (it is not included in the length of the essay)
  •  Total quantity of references cannot exceed more than 20% of the whole essay.
  •  Before the final announcement, nominated essays will be released on this website from 1st October, 2013 to prevent the possibility of ghostwriting or plagiarism. If there are no objections during one week, the final announcement will be released via this page.
  •  No multiple application is accepted.
  •  In order to receive the award, correct contact information including full name, phone number, address and e-mail address is required. Incorrect or incomplete contact information may cause disqualification.

Essay Topic

“Japan’s policy direction in the global economy－ Growth strategy to revitalize the economy and Japan’s contribution to the world －”

It has been five years since the financial crisis that devastated the global economy. Many countries are still facing difficult challenges such as pursuing both fiscal consolidation and economic growth, and finding a stable and sustainable growth path. In Japan, strategies to end its long-term stagnation—which is referred to as the “Lost Decade” or the “Lost Two Decades”—have been widely discussed.

What innovation or industries should be fostered to stimulate the Japanese economy in the medium- and long-term and how can we achieve it? What economic policies are necessary and what roles should be played by the government, businesses, and individuals respectively? If there are any issues besides economic concerns, what are those? How can Japan contribute to the stable and sustainable development of the global economy?

We welcome your proposals regarding the course of direction that Japan should take and specific strategies to revitalize its economy and contribute to the global economy. Think outside the box! Your innovative ideas are welcomed.

The 2013 Royal Economic Society Essay Competition.

tutor2u and the Royal Economic Society are delighted to announce details of the 2013 essay competition for sixth form students.

Now in it’s sixth year, the essay competition provides a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in independent research and deepen their awareness and understanding of how economic ideas and issues can be applied when addressing contemporary policy problems. For 2013 the Judges have selected six essay titles (shown below).

The final deadline for entries has been moved towards the end of June 2013. This follows requests from many schools and colleges to use the RES competition as a post AS level enrichment activity especially for those students keen on applying to read Economics and related courses at university.  The competition is open to all students who are currently studying AS / A2 Level or IB Economics (or an equivalent course).

Competition Details

The RES judging panel has settled on six essay titles covering a range of macro and micro economic issues. They are listed below.

The first prize will once again be £1,000 together with an engraved trophy together with cash prizes for the other leading essays.

The deadline for submitting essays is Sunday 30 June 2013 at 2400 hours (GMT)..

  • The competition is open to all students who are currently studying GCSE, AS / A2 Level or IB Economics (or an equivalent course)
  • All essays must be submitted online using the official online entry form (see the link below)
  • The maximum word count for entries is 2,000 words
  • The word count includes footnotes, but excludes references and bibliography.
  • Only one entry per student is permitted
  • No revisions to entries are permitted once submitted
  • Please note that entries to the competition should be unique (i.e. not published elsewhere or submitted to other essay competitions.)

Essay Titles for 2013Your essay should answer one of the following essay titles:

  1. Does the international mobility of talent make it impossible to tax the rich?
  2. Should the experience of China silence those who think that democracy is good for growth?
  3. Is the UK banking system too concentrated?
  4. Should Universities embrace market forces in deciding what to teach and how?
  5. Should those who object to Heathrow expansion be “bought off’’ at taxpayer expense?
  6. Must “quantitative easing” end in inflation?

All entries will be judged by a panel of 15-20 experienced Economics teachers drawn from a range of schools and colleges across the UK.  The Teacher Panel meet together in late June for two days and produce a Final Shortlist of entries from the expected entry of over 700 essays. In addition to the Final Shortlist, the Teacher Panel will produce a list of Highly Commended entries. The final winners will be announced in the late summer of 2013.
