Village Capital Fintech Africa Program 2016 Fintech Entrepreneurs in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Village Capital, The MasterCard Foundation, and the DOEN Foundation are seeking to identify and support the next generation of fintech entrepreneurs in Sub-Saharan Africa. These entrepreneurs are innovating in financial technology to increase financial health and improve livelihoods for low-income populations. Examples of this type of initiative include:

  • Increasing the access, relevance, and affordability of savings, credit, payments, and insurance products through leveraging data analytics, blockchain technology, and digital identity verification;
  • Increasing efficiency in supply chains and distribution channels across sectors through better market access, increased price transparency, increased connections to new suppliers, and access to other decision-driving market information; and/or
  • Enhancing livelihoods of low-income small business owners through tools for value-chain tracking, smart logistics, business insurance, working-capital loans, and financial management tools to better handle risk and volatility.

 Program Dates:

  • Workshop 1: December 6-9
  • Workshop 2:  January 24-27
  • Workshop 3: February 21-24

Application Procedure:

  • Applications close September 20th.
  • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and those that apply earlier will have greater chances of being selected.

British Council’s East Africa Arts Programme 2016 for East African Creatives

East Africa Arts is the British Council’s framework for working between Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia and the UK. The programme: connects new audiences to new art, shares skills of creatives, and ignites partnerships between the creative sectors of the UK and East Africa.

An annual open call for cultural partners across Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and the UK to create new art to showcase to new audiences in the UK and East Africa.

The programme has three core sections:

  • new Art, new Audiences: ‘nAnA’
  • Creative Hustles

    Skills and networking
    Creative Hustles are skills and networking events, taking place across East Africa. Creative Hustles share cultural skills and knowledge, and give access to the creative sector for 18-35 year olds.

    Creative Hustles

    Sparking Collaboration Across East Africa and the UK

    Connect East Africa is an East African mobility programme, co-produced by British Council, DOEN Foundation and Lambent Foundation.  Artists and cultural practitioners, across art forms, will be able to apply for a travel grant to participate in an event  in East Africa, that has a collaborative, research or skills based outcome.

British Council’s East Africa Arts programme invites you to submit an expression of interest for new Art new Audiences.

new Art new Audiences (nAnA) details:

There is no theme for nAnA, only the objective to produce new art, which connects to new audiences;
• Minimum one UK and two East African countries to be involved in the project;
• Project administrated by one East African or UK partner;
• Target audience for nAnA is 18 – 35 year olds;
• Projects can be match funded;
• Minimum and maximum grant allocation is £2,000 – £20,000;
• 3 -5 projects will be selected for nAnA 2016/17.

2015 Impact Amplifier Eco-Innovators Investment Readiness Programme for Entrepreneurs, South Africa.

Impact Amplifier with funding from the DOEN Foundation, together with various partners (GreenCape, Innovation Hub), have created the Eco-Innovators Investment Readiness Program. This is a five-month long program designed for businesses in the environmental goods and services sector, to prepare for expansion and funding.

The programme will offer entrepreneurs the skills, knowledge, documentation and support required to secure investment for their businesses. The Programme addresses:

  • Constructing an Impact Case;
  • Market access, sales and distribution;
  • Strategic planning;
  • Financial modelling and planning;
  • Writing an Investment case to secure funding;
  • Pitching to investors; and
  • Connecting with partners in the business ecosystem, including multinational companies, NGOs and governments.

Eligibility:

Entrepreneurs from anywhere in South Africa may apply.

Program Details:

  • The participants meet every two weeks where one of the eight programme modules is delivered.
  • Post each module, over the next two weeks, the participants work on this aspect of the investment readiness process in preparation for the next meeting.
  • Participants are also each assigned an individual mentor, which supports their work between the modules.
  • This process allows for the participants to build the investment readiness strategy best suited for their business.

Selection Criteria

Impact Amplifier is seeking applications, which have the potential for growth from the environmental goods and services sector.

The type of businesses, which can apply include, but are not exclusive to the following:

  • Alternative Energy – waste to energy, biofuels, solar, wind and others;
  • Energy efficiency;
  • Solid waste reuse and effluent treatment;
  • Clean water;
  • Sustainable agriculture; and
  • Ecological building.

Costs:

  • The programme cost over R100,000 per participant to deliver.
  • However, each entrepreneur in the programme will only be asked to make a nominal contribution of R3,000 toward the food and venue hire required.
  • This contribution is also based on the reality that people place more value on what they pay for.
