The application period for the World YWCA Internship Programme 2016 is now open!
The World Young Women’s Christian Association (World YWCA) is a global network of women leading social and economic change in over 120 countries worldwide.
One–year Internship
There will be an emphasis on supporting advocacy through communications, programmes and movement building on the priority themes violence against women and sexual reproductive health and rights and HIV and young women’s leadership in 2016. Internship opportunities will exist in the communications team and programme team, with a goal to ensure interns experience the diversity of the work of the World YWCA.
- Dates:The one-year internship begins 1 February 2016 and ends 16 December 2016. The deadline for receiving applications is June 30th, 2015. Applications received after this date will not be considered.Applicants and their member associations will be informed in early September 2015 if they have been successful.
Stipend, Allowances and Insurance
Each intern trainee receives:
- A return excess baggage allowance is available of no more than 50 kilograms of personal effects to be sent by the most economical freight from Geneva to the intern’s country of origin (available only for one-year interns). The World YWCA will pay directly to the freight company. No allowance for excess luggage is available on arrival in Geneva. Any additional excess luggage expenses must be paid by the intern.
- Furnished housing with wi fi access in a single hostel room is provided.
- Stipend payments for food and personal needs of CHF1’300 per month for the full period of the internship.
- Basic health insurance is provided to cover health problems arising during the internship, including monthly premiums and annual deductible costs, to a maximum of CHF 6’000 for the year. Swiss disability and pension scheme (AVS) as well as unemployment insurance and taxes (as required by law) are paid by the World YWCA.
- Interns will be covered by group accident insurance for any accident occurring both during and outside office hours and in Switzerland and abroad
- Travel insurance is provided while travelling on World YWCA business.
- A Geneva bus pass is provided for the period of the internship, and up to CHF500 allowance for private travel is available during this period.
- A settling-in allowance is given at the beginning of the term in the amount of CHF150.
Short–term/Advocacy and Communications Internships
The World YWCA advocacy internships offer the opportunity for a minimum of four young women from YWCAs around the world to develop their skills and knowledge on advocacy and activism through training and exposure to the work and mechanisms of the UN system.

The deadline for applications is October 30, 2015, following World Council. Applicants and their member associations will be informed early 2016.
Travel
- The World YWCA will cover the most economical and direct route airfare from and to the home country of the participant. Any additional contributions by the national association to the travel and accommodation costs would be greatly appreciated as funding for this programme must be continuously sought.Accommodation and Health CareThe World YWCA is responsible for the accommodation, basic food allowance, local transport and health insurance.
Eligibility to apply
- Applicants must be between 22 and 30 years of age
- Each candidate’s participation must be endorsed by her national YWCA
- Opportunities are open to young women from all member associations, however preference will be given to developing countries for the one-year internship due to current donor funding restrictions
- Applicants must be actively involved in their YWCA, either as a volunteer or staff member and demonstrate strong interest and enthusiasm in the World YWCA movement.
- Successful candidates must commit to sharing the experience gained with their YWCA following the internship, and their association must commit to integrating their leadership/experience into the association upon the return home
Applicants are required to have:
- A minimum of two years of active involvement with the YWCA
- A strong commitment to women’s rights and leadership
- Previous experience in advocacy and/or activism on women’s rights is an asset
- A good working knowledge of English, both oral and written, is essential
- Independent and self-reliant, willing to take initiative, creative, hardworking, and flexible
- The ability to relate their present experience and interests to the work of the World YWCA and how they and their member association will make use of the experience upon the return home
