For those aspiring to a career in the development sector, DFID offer unique and crucial support for taking that first step. The 2 year paid programme will begin in October 2018.   • Be prepared to work in either London or East Kilbride

2015 Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships for study in the United Kingdom

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships support candidates to study Master’s degree courses that are either offered in partnership with universities in developing countries, or delivered directly by UK institutions.

The scheme was established in 2002, as a direct response to the measures taken by our funder, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), to explore new methods of delivery as part of the drive for poverty reduction.

2015 Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships are being offered for the following Master’s courses at the following Universities:

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship, you must:

  • be a citizen of a developing Commonwealth country, refugee, or British protected person
  • be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
  • normally hold a first degree of upper second-class standard, or higher qualification. In certain cases, we will consider a lower qualification and sufficient relevant experience

2015 Royal Society-DFID Africa Capacity Building Initiative for Scientists

This programme is for scientists who want to develop collaborative research consortia between scientists in sub-Saharan Africa and a research institution in the UK.

The overall aim of the scheme is to strengthen the research capacity of universities and research institution in sub-Saharan Africa by supporting the development of sustainable research networks.

The scheme provides funding towards research expenses, travel and subsistence costs, (PhD) training, and limited funds for equipment.

The scheme is funded by the UK’s Department for International Development.

Basic eligibility requirements

Applicants must be based in one of the eligible sub-Saharan African countries (PDF) or the UK. In order to act as a principal investigator (PI), applicants must:

  • have a PhD or have extensive research experience at an equivalent level
  • have a proven track record of training students at Master’s and Doctoral level
  • have a proven track record of publishing in both national and international journals
  • be based in the respective countries at the time of the application

Applications will be accepted in three research priority areas:

  • Water & sanitation
  • Renewable energy
  • Soil-related research

Value and tenure

Programme Grants will provide support for Research Consortia, consisting of three African groups and one UK-based laboratory.

Applicants do not need to have held a Scientific Networking award to apply for a Programme Grant.

The Programme Grant may provide support of up to £1,243,000 over a five year period, including:

Expense Budget per partner Total Budget
A PhD studentship for each of the African PI’s £60,000/studentship  £180,000 
Research costs Up to £20,000 per year for each research group £400,000. 
Exchanges of researchers Costs for travel and subsistence of up to £10,000 per year for each laboratory £200,000.
Equipment purchasing, repair and maintenance Up to £10,000 per year for each African laboratory £150,000
Additional training modules (workshops and seminars) Up to £10,000 per year for each PI £200,000
Co-ordination and management costs 10% of value of the grant £113,000
Total Budget £1,243,000

Application process

Applications to the Programme grants will be initially reviewed by three members of the Royal Society-DFID Africa Capacity Strengthening Initiative panel. Applications that are shortlisted will be independently peer reviewed and discussed at a panel meeting.

Enhancing Growth in New Enterprise Programme Business Plan Competition for Ghanians.

The Enhancing Growth in New Enterprise programme (ENGINE), a national Business Plan Competition and Entrepreneurship Development Program.

ENGINE is a multiyear project implemented by TechnoServe with funding from the UK Government through the Department for International Development (DFID) that seeks to equip Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) with the skills and resources to improve their business plans and internal operations, while creating a thriving community of entrepreneurs through the increase of access to business development services and to financing.

The program seeks to achieve its objectives through the following components:

Business Plan Competition (BPC):

  • TechnoServe will launch a business plan competition whereby applicants will be asked to submit 5-page concept papers and undertake a psychometric test to determine entrepreneurial capacity.
  • A 4-day intensive training course will then be administered to the best applicants to enable them submit a 15-20 page business plan.
  • Finalists will be selected amongst those who received the 4-day training and will receive an additional 8 hours of mentorship to finalize their business plans.

Entrepreneur Aftercare:

  • Following the selection of the business plan competition winners, all entrepreneurs (grant and non-grant winners) who presented their business plans to the panel of judges will receive the provision of mentoring, networking and other business development services over the course of one year.

Winners and finalists of ENGINE will be given awards that include seed capital, business development services, opportunities to present to private investors and links to financial institutions and investment capital.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to participate in the ENGINE Business Plan Competition a person must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a Ghanaian citizen
  • Be 20 years of age or older at the time of submitting the application
  • Propose an expansion on an existing business or a new business that is or will be based in Ghana
  • Have no more than 50 employees (existing businesses)
  • Propose a business expansion or concept that will realistically create at least 5 new jobs by the end of the second year of business operations, and will have a minimum investment base of GH¢50,000 and annual sales of GH¢100,000 by the end of the third year of business operations
  • Propose an expansion or a new business in any sector or industry (except Imports to Sell)
  • A firm commitment to submit basic financial data for a period of 3 years following participation in the program, as well as submitting financial data during the issuance of the grant
  • Ideas can be submitted by individuals or by a group. If an idea is submitted by a group, all group members must meet all of the above stated criteria
  • Each idea may be submitted only once
  • Only one person per application may participate in training sessions, events, consultant meetings and any other aspect of the competition. The same person from any one business team must attend the entire programme from beginning to end. The only exceptions that may be made will be by consultants, who may agree in advance to meet with additional members of a management team
  • No employee or associate of the employee (spouse, parent, cousin, nephew, niece, or child) of any of the organizations associated with the competition is permitted to participate
  • All businesses proposed must be profit seeking, self-sustaining businesses. No non-profit entities will be accepted
  • The organizers are not responsible for any other costs (i.e. lodging, food, further transportation) that a participant may incur in order to attend any of the competition events

Applicants will be asked to identify which industry categories best describes their businesses or business concepts: 

  • Agribusiness and Processing {including Greenfield Operations}
  • Energy
  • Services {including but not limited to Media, Hospitality and Tourism}
  • Technology/ Communications
  • Light Manufacturing
  • Private Sector Solutions to Water, Health or Education
  • Other (Applicants will need to specify what sector if it does not fall into the provided categories)
      A complete application must include all of the following:
  1. Hard copy of signed Participation Agreement
  2. Complete Application Form (typed)
  3. Business Concept Statement (maximum 5 pages, double-spaced, typed, minimum font of 12) – business concepts that do not respect this length limitation will not be reviewed and will be automatically excluded from the competition

Awards

  • Winners will receive a combination of seed capital and aftercare (business development services).
  • The programme will also facilitate participants to access loan or investment capital from financial institutions or investors.
  • Several finalists will also win aftercare awards (business development services). At least US$ 720,000 (GBP450,000) in seed capital and aftercare will be awarded across the winners and finalists

Winner Obligations

  • The winners will sign a contract in which they bind themselves to invest the seed capital (cash) awarded directly into the project described in their submitted business plans.
  • Winners of ENGINE will be expected to participate in a variety of media events after the conclusion of the competition.
  • All winners are subject to an ENGINE audit for the first three years of the life of the business or the expansion.
  • Additionally, all winners must present quarterly financial reports to the ENGINE implementing agency (TechnoServe) for verification.

The program supports a global network of emerging and established women leaders who provide unusual and sustainable solutions to pressing problems that have impeded women and girls’ progress to participate fully in society and the economy.

Recognizing that in order to advance the causes of women, women themselves must connect with, empower, equip and inspire one another at all levels of society, Vital Voices — with funding support provided by the UK government’s Department for International Development — is committed to helping create a unified response, not just from women’s rights activists and sectoral experts, but also from a wide range of professionals and practitioners across fields and methodologies.

The VVLead Fellowship Program is a critical step in this response, offering participants unique opportunities to exchange information, obtain resources and tools, mentor and be mentored and receive vital training over the course of three years through offerings tailored to meet their needs, goals and objectives.

Who Can Apply?
Vital Voices is seeking applications for the VVLead Fellowship Program from women leaders who are
committed to tackling issues related to economic disparities, violence against women and harmful cultural
practices – with particular focus on forced/early marriage – in order to create a more prosperous and secure
world. Knowing that this work will take many forms, leaders may be engaged in this change through work in a variety of fields including business, non-profit/non-governmental organization, public office/government (elected or appointed), advocacy initiative or community-based organization.

Eligible applicants must be:

  • 18 years or older; living and working for change in a developing country;
  • demonstrating high-impact; and actively committed to the progress of their cause on a full-time basis

United Kingdom-Commonwealth Academic Fellowships Awards for mid-career academics 2014.

Commonwealth Academic Fellowships for mid-career academics from developing Commonwealth countries are offered to enable award holders to spend three months at a UK university updating their skills and knowledge. These fellowships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Purpose

The main purpose of Commonwealth Academic Fellowships is to enhance the careers of recipients through the development of new skills and contacts, or through networking and updating knowledge and skills.

Research is not the main aim of these Fellowships and discrete research projects will not be supported. However, we do welcome the publication of joint research which may follow from a Fellowship.

A strong case will have to be made if a Fellowship is requested for a period of more than three months, with the aim of progressing collaborative research already underway between the home and proposed host university.

All applications require an email or letter of support from an academic at the proposed host university in the UK. Any application without such support will be deemed ineligible.

Nominations

In most instances, nominations for Commonwealth Academic Fellowships are made by specific developing country universities, which are responsible for advertising the fellowships to their staff.

In Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka, nominations are made by the University Grants Commission. In Pakistan, nominations are made by the Higher Education Commission.

Each year, the CSC invites each nominating university/university body to forward a specific number of nominations. Each nominating university/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases they will set their own closing date, which will be before the CSC’s deadline for nominations (17 December 2013).

The CSC also invites alumni who held Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD to apply directly to the CSC for a Commonwealth Academic Fellowship. All eligible alumni will be sent a letter with details of how to apply.

HOW CAN I APPLY?
Nominations for Commonwealth Academic Fellowships may be made
by invitation through the following channels:
•The Executive Head of an eligible developing country university on whose staff the applicant serves
•In the case of Bangladesh and India, nominations are made through
the University Grants Commission; in Pakistan, through the Higher Education Commisssion; and in Sri Lanka, through the Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education
• The Executive Head of selected developing country research institutes on whose staff the applicant serves A full list of universities/research institutes invited to nominate can be found on the CSC website. Those wishing to be considered for inclusion in the list of institutions invited should contact theExecutive Secretary of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (c/o The Association of Commonwealth Universities, Woburn House, 20-24 Tavistock Square, London WC1H 9HF).

Alumni who wish to apply directly to the CSC for a Commonwealth Academic Fellowship must:

  • have been awarded a PhD by a UK institution between 1 October 2002 and 1 October 2011, while holding a Commonwealth Scholarship
  • meet all the standard eligibility requirements
  • be from and be currently employed as an academic at a university in one of the following Commonwealth countries: Bangladesh, Barbados, Cameroon, Ghana, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad, Uganda, Zambia

Applications are considered according to the following selection criteria:

  • Academic merit of the candidate
  • Quality of the proposal
  • Likely impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country

How to apply

All applications must be made through your nominating university/university body in your home country. You must check with them in the first instance for specific advice on how to make an application and for their own closing date. The CSC cannot accept any applications direct from candidates except for those alumni individually invited to apply for an Academic Fellowship.

The CSC expects all Commonwealth Academic Fellowship to have completed an application form using our Electronic Application System (EAS).

The EAS will close to applicants on 3 December 2013 and no further applications can be made after that date.
