Dalai Lama Fellowship 2023 for young social innovators (Fully Funded to Contemplative Leadership Assembly in the United States)

Applications are now open for 15 young social innovators from around the world to Apply for the 2023 Dalai Lama Fellows program.

Dalai Lama Fellows (DLF) offers emerging social innovators a rigorous, interdisciplinary, and deeply contemplative program to reimagine leadership as involving self-awareness, personal sustainability, genuine compassion for others, and the capacity to skillfully navigate complex systems at multiple levels.

Over the course of a year, with the support of mentors and coaches, each Fellow implements an original field project addressing a local challenge and learns how to interweave their own transformation with the transformation of the communities with which they are engaging. Upon graduation, Fellows join a community of LifeLong Fellows, with whom they connect in mutually supportive ways while continuing to advance their leadership journeys.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to fulfill the minimum requirements, through the application a candidate must demonstrate:

  • Age requirements: 20-35 years old as of July 1, 2023
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Current engagement with or well-articulated plans for a social change project and sustained engagement with the project throughout the fellowship year (NOTE: due to the difficulty of launching a social innovation project from scratch, we give preference to applicants who have ongoing projects, but each year we have selected Fellows who have a concrete vision for a project and plans to launch during the fellowship year, given they have the adequate expertise, resources, and community connections at the time of applying)
  • In-depth knowledge of the community and the issue that the project is seeking to address, preferably with at least one year of previous experience working with the community 
  • Interest in learning and engaging in contemplative practices throughout the year
  • Commitment to participating in all dimensions of the program (online learning platform, 1-on-1 coaching calls, group learning calls, etc.)

Dalai Lama Fellowship 2022 for young social innovators (Fully Funded to Contemplative Leadership Assembly in the United States)

The 2022 Dalai Lama Fellows Program is now open for 20-25 young social innovators from around the world.

Dalai Lama Fellows, founded in 2010 with the inspiration and encouragement of the 14th Dalai Lama, is reimagining leadership by cultivating and supporting an international movement of young social innovators to meet global challenges in locally adapted ways as they promote our planet’s flourishing. The Dalai Lama Fellows Program award year-long fellowships to innovators who are working on social change projects in local communities to address one or more of the following areas: Health and Well-being, Education and Youth Development, Social Justice, Environment, Cultural Understanding, Contemplation. The program is non-sectarian and inclusive to all backgrounds.

  • Immersion in our distinctive yearlong Head, Heart, Hands online leadership curriculum
  • One-on-one and small-group coaching to support their personal development and leadership in social innovation work
  • Participation in the Contemplative Leadership Assembly with Fellows from around the world and dynamic faculty
  • Lifelong affiliation in our global learning community and support system.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to fulfill the minimum requirements, through the application a candidate must demonstrate:

  • Age requirements: 20-36 years old as of Feb 1, 2022 (we added a year of eligibility because we did not select Fellows in 2021; please do not inquire about exceptions to the age range, as this is a firm requirement)
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Current engagement with or well-articulated plans for a social change project and sustained engagement with the project throughout the fellowship year (NOTE: due to the difficulty of launching a social innovation project from scratch, we give preference to applicants who have ongoing projects, but each year we have selected Fellows who have a concrete vision for a project and plans to launch during the fellowship year, given they have the adequate expertise, resources, and community connections at the time of applying)
  • In-depth knowledge of the community and the issue that the project is seeking to address, preferably with at least one year of previous experience working with the community 
  • Interest in learning and engaging in contemplative practices throughout the year
  • Commitment to participating in all dimensions of the program (online learning platform, 1-on-1 coaching calls, group learning calls, etc.)
    • We estimate full participation in the fellowship requires about 12 hours per month, not including Fellows’ work on their projects
  • Attendance at the Contemplative Leadership Assembly in late July 2022 (DLF will cover all costs for travel, lodging, and meals for the Assembly)

Fellowship Components


For most of the fellowship, Fellows participate remotely. They work on their compassion-in-action projects while engaging with DLF’s online leadership curriculum and receiving virtual coaching and mentorship. At the beginning of the fellowship year, Fellows gather for a week-long Contemplative Leadership Assembly in the United States.

Compassion-in-Action Projects

During the fellowship year, each Fellow works on a compassion-in-action project in a community with which they have strong relationships. These projects allow Fellows to apply the concepts and practices they’re learning through the program to their social innovation work, thus distributing their personal growth to far wider networks in the ecosystems with which they are engaged.

Compassion-in-action projects engage with one or more of the following categories:

  • Health and Well-Being
  • Education and Youth Development
  • Social Justice
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Cultural Understanding
  • Contemplation

An Integrated Leadership Curriculum

DLF’s unique Head, Heart, and Hands curriculum offers each Fellow a dynamic learning journey informed by the latest theories and research on leadership and social innovation alongside age-old wisdom from our world’s contemplative traditions. The curriculum doesn’t merely deliver intellectual knowledge, but provides regular opportunities for active learning and practical applications of the content to Fellows’ everyday lives and social innovation efforts. Learning modules cover topics including mindful awareness, emotional intelligence, creating meaningful connections, navigating uncertainty, using power with care, storytelling, and more.
The curriculum is rooted in three main themes:

  • Head – Training the mind and attention, cultivating self-awareness, understanding systems
  • Heart – Harnessing the wisdom of the heart, deepening compassion, working across differences, navigating uncertainty
  • Hands – “Getting the hands dirty,” enacting wisdom and compassion in social innovation work

1-on-1 Coaching and Mentoring

Fellows receive personalized 1-on-1 coaching and mentoring to support their ongoing development. DLF coaches have a wealth of expertise and experience working at the intersection of contemplation and social innovation, and each coaching call is a space where Fellows receive care, guidance, and the opportunity to find answers to their most pressing questions within themselves.

Community Learning

Throughout the year, Fellows engage in small-group and full-cohort learning experiences. In addition to receiving further guidance from coaches during community learning experiences, Fellows also learn from each other’s experiences and wisdom.

Contemplative Leadership Assembly

Fellows attend this annual week-long event, where they have the opportunity to learn contemplative practices and new perspectives on leadership and social innovation. The Assembly invites each Fellow to show up fully as themselves, bringing their rich personal and cultural gifts to a space that harnesses each individual’s uniqueness as part of an affirming and dynamic learning environment. DLF covers all costs for attending the Assembly such as visa fees, travel, and lodging.

Dalai Lama Fellowship 2020 for emerging young Leaders

Dalai Lama Fellows (DLF) is a unique one-year leadership program for emerging social change leaders designed to cultivate resilience and compassion, strengthen commitment to universal human values, and broaden cultural perspectives. DLF’s ultimate goal is to help young leaders develop greater self-awareness, resiliency, and insight as well as deeper connections to others, their communities, and the world.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to fulfill the minimum requirements, a candidate must demonstrate the following through the application:

  • Be a next generation leader who is between 20-35 years old*
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Experience or interest in learning and practicing contemplative practices throughout the year
  • Current engagement (or well-articulated plans) for a social change project in one’s local community and sustained engagement throughout the fellowship year
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of the community and the issue that the project is seeking to address, preferably with at least one year of previous experience working with the community
  • Commitment to participate in our online learning platform, coaching calls, etc.
  • Attendance at the Contemplative Leadership Assembly in mid-June 2020 (Dalai Lama Fellows will cover all travel, lodging, and meals for the assembly)

*Candidates must be between 20-35 years old on Jan. 5, 2020. This is a firm age range, and due to the high volume of applications and the fellowship’s focus on next generation leaders, we are currently unable to make exceptions.

Dalai Lama Fellowship 2019 for emerging Leaders (Fully Funded)

The Dalai Lama Fellows (DLF) experience is an immersive, year-long commitment that mentors each Fellow through a leadership curriculum inspired by exemplary leaders like the Dalai Lama.  This curriculum will help you become more mindful, increase awareness of your inner values and how they relate to your work, deeply connect with people around you, and provide new ways of building sustainable solutions to complex problems.

Dalai Lama Fellows, founded in 2010 with the inspiration and encouragement of the 14th Dalai Lama, is reimagining leadership by cultivating and supporting a global movement of next generation leaders applying universal values and local understanding to solve global challenges at the communal level.  The program is secular and ecumenical.

Award year-long Fellowships to such next generation leaders that are working on social change projects in local communities to address one or more of the following areas: mitigating economic disparity, diminishing violence, gender inequity, improving cross-cultural and interreligious cooperation, facilitating new and more holistic educational approaches, and enhancing environmental sustainability.

We provide each Project Fellow with:

  • Immersion in our distinctive yearlong Head, Heart, Hands leadership curriculum;
  • One-on-one coaching to support their projects in social change and personal development as contemplative and collaborative leaders;
  • Participation in two week-long Global Assembliesy with Fellows from around the world and dynamic faculty; and
  • LifeLong affiliation in our global learning community and support system.

We are inviting interested applicants to participate in an honest self-reflection process that offers an opportunity not only to apply to the program but also to reflect on personal values and goals.

Be Authentic: As you reflect on and respond to these questions, remember not to tell us what you think we want to hear. Be authentic with yourself and share that authenticity with our team.

Be Courageous: This application is an opportunity to reflect on how you can grow as a leader. Be courageously bold, imagine the kind of leader you can become, and tell us about it.

(7)  Attendance at week-long Global Assembly in June 2019 and again in June 2020,  participation in monthly coaching calls through video conference, participation in monthly group calls with other Fellows, completion of curriculum, and peer-to-peer interaction on the platform.

The Dalai Lama Fellowship offers emerging leaders a rigorous, interdisciplinary program on ways to be a different kind of leader, a leader that connects and cares for self, extends genuine compassion to others, and works for our common humanity. Fellows cultivate practices in mind training for increasing self-awareness, self-care and resilience, for connecting with others and working across differences, and in building solutions for generations to come. Over the course of a year, with the support of mentors and coaches, each Fellow designs and implements an original Field Project addressing a global challenge. Upon graduation, Fellows join a LifeLong Community, where they connect with and support each other while continuing to advance their leadership journeys.

A Global Leadership Curriculum

Collaborating with experts from around the globe from Thupten Jinpa, the Dalai Lama’s translator and renowned author, to Marshall Ganz from the Harvard Kennedy School, over the last six years, we have created a distinctive, immersive leadership curriculum which builds a skill-set, complementary to the cognitive and commercial education that Fellows typically acquire in school.  Our Head, Heart and Hands curriculum has three main components:

  • Head – Training the mind, exploring inner values, cultivating practices to enhance self awareness
  • Heart – Harnessing the intelligence of the heart, deepening compassion, practices for working across differences
  • Hands – Acting now, in community, to benefit the world, building unexpected relationships and leading with the mindset of interdependence

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The program is focused on next-generation leaders who are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate schools at the time of applying and who intend to be enrolled and on campus during their Fellowship year.
  • Dalai Lama Fellowship define next generation leaders as individuals that are born between 1980-1995. In some cases we accept applications from individuals that are no longer enrolled in school but that fall in this age range and that are committed to work in social change.
