DAAD University Summer Course Grants Scholarships 2025 for Study in Germany (Funded)

Applications are now open for the 2025/2026 DAAD University Summer Course Grants Scholarships. This programme aims to deepen knowledge of the German language (general language, technical language) and regional studies.

Requirements

  • Students in undergraduate (e.g. bachelor’s) and master’s degree programs in all disciplines are eligible to apply.
  • Undergraduate students must have completed at least two academic years by the time the scholarship period begins.
  • The grant holder must be at least 18 years old when starting the language course.
  • Applicants must be enrolled at a university in one of the programme-related countries (except Germany) both at the time of application and during the entire scholarship period.
  • Funding under the programme can only be claimed once.
  • Applicants commit themselves to deal sensitively with the issue of sustainability.

Language skills

  • Applicants must be able to follow lectures in German and participate in group work.

German language skills must be proven at the time of application.

  • The following language certificates are usually accepted: onSET-Deutsch, TestDaF, Goethe Institut Zertifikat, DSD, DSH, telc Deutsch, ÖSD-Zertifikat, baccalaureate (for specialised language courses only).
  • The language certificate cannot be older than 1 year at the time of application (this also applies to DSH). Language certificates from B2 or TDN4 in all examination parts may be older than one year.
  • In principle, applicants must provide proof of a minimum language level of B1

What can be funded:

  • The programme funds attendance of language, regional studies and technical language courses offered by state or state-recognised German universities and by affiliated language schools.
  • Course providers and courses offered can be found on the DAAD website at: www.daad.de/hsk-kursliste.
  • The courses are taught exclusively in German.
  • Participation takes place exclusively in presence.

Duration of the funding

  • The courses have a duration of at least 18 teaching days (max. 5 days/week, excluding arrival and departure days) with at least 25 teaching hours per week each.
  • The grants are not extendable.
  • The courses usually take place between the months of June and September.

Benefits

  • One-time scholarship payment of 1,192 euros; scholarship holders from the “Least Developed Countries” receive a scholarship in the amount of1,367 euros.
  • Payment of a country-specific travel allowance for selected countries, see: travel allowance.
  • Health, accident and personal liability insurance benefits.

Please note:
The above-mentioned scholarship benefits (including the travel allowance) are not transferred abroad.
The course fees and accommodation costs are usually directly deducted from the scholarship benefits by the language course provider, so that the scholarship holder may “only” receive the difference to the full amount from the course provider.

Selection Criteria

  • A selection committee will review all applications
  • Key selection criteria are:
    – Previous academic achievements
    – Convincing letter of motivation for choice of study programme and future academic project

DAAD University Summer Course Grants Scholarships 2021/2022 for Study in Germany

The DAAD University Summer Course Grants Scholarships aims to deepen knowledge of the German language (general language, technical language) and regional studies.

Requirements

  • Students in Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes of alle disciplines are eligible to apply.
  • Bachelor students must have completed at least two university years at the start of the scholarship.

  • The minimum age at the start of the scholarship is 18 years.
  • As a rule, applicants must be enrolled at a university in the programme countries (except Germany) both at the time of application and during the entire scholarship period.
  • There must be two years between two funding awards for a university summer course.

Language skills

  • Applicants must be able to follow lectures in German and participate in working groups.
  • German language skills must be proven at the time of application.
  • The language certificate cannot be older than 2 years at the time of application.
  • The following language certificates are usually accepted: onSET-Deutsch, TestDaF, Goethe Institut certificate, DSD, DSH, telc Deutsch, ÖSD-Zertifikat, baccalaureate (for specialised language courses only).
    If, due to the pandemic situation, it is not possible for you to take one of the above-mentioned language examinations and submit a corresponding language certificate, in such proven cases, a language certificate approved by DAAD lecturers can be submitted as an exception. Please contact the respective information and counselling office for further information.
    If you already have a language certificate from 2020 for attending a course in 2021 that has been approved by DAAD lecturers, you can submit it this year as an exception.

Funded

  • Funding is provided for participation in language, regional studies and technical language courses offered by state or state-recognised German higher education institutions and language course providers affiliated with higher education institutions.
  • Course providers and courses offered can be found on the DAAD website at: www.daad.de/hsk-kursliste.
  • The courses are taught exclusively in German.


Duration of the funding

  • The courses have a duration of at least 18 teaching days (max. 5 days/week, excluding arrival and departure days) with at least 25 teaching hours per week each.
  • The scholarships cannot be extended.
  • The courses usually take place in the months ofJune to November.

Value

  • One-time scholarship payment of 1,061 euros; scholarship holders from the “Least Developed Countries” receive a scholarship in the amount of1,236 euros.
  • Payment of a country-specific travel allowance (exception: Western Europe), see: travel allowance.
  • Health, accident and personal liability insurance benefits.


Please note:
The course fees and accommodation costs are usually deducted directly by the language course provider from the scholarship benefits to be paid out, so that the scholarship holder may “only” receive the difference to the full amount from the course provider.
The above-mentioned scholarship benefits (including the flat-rate travel allowance) are not transferred abroad.]

Application documents

Certificates, transcripts, attestations and translations can be submitted in uncertified form. The DAAD Head Office in Bonn reserves the right to request additional certified copies of the documents submitted.

Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD Portal:

  • Online application form
  • Complete curriculum vitae in tabular form (in German)
  • Letter of motivation (in German)
  • Copy of the graduation certificate (for Bachelor’s students) or copy of the Bachelor’s degree certificate from the university (for Master’s students) with indication of the final grade(s), if available (with German or English translation).
  • Performance records of the last two years in German or English
  • Language certificates (with German or English translation, if applicable)
  • Other documents that you consider important for your application, if necessary with German or English translation (e.g. proof of internships, certificates of employment).
  • In addition students with certificates from the first year of higher education are also eligible to apply.

The application is made online via the DAAD Portal.

Application deadline

DAAD University Summer Course Grants Scholarships 2017/2018 for Study in Germany

This scholarship programme aims to help students and graduates improve their knowledge of German (general language, special language) and their cultural knowledge of the country.

This program provides scholarships to attend a broad range of three- to four-week summer courses at German universities which focus mainly on German language and literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. Extensive extracurricular programs complement and reinforce the core material.

A number of the University Summer Course Grants are made possible by the DAAD Alumni Association of the US, including one that is specially earmarked for an applicant in the fine arts.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applications are open to students in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in any subject area.
  • Bachelor students must have completed at least two academic years at the start of the scholarship period.
  • Neither graduates holding a Master’s degree nor PhD students are eligible for this programme.

Duration of the funding

  • The courses run for at least 18 teaching days (max. 5 days/week, excluding days of arrival and departure) with a minimum of 25 hours of teaching a week.
  • The grants are non-renewable.
  • The courses usually take place in the period from June to December.

Value

  • One-off scholarship payment of 850 euros; participants from the countries defined by the “OECD-DAC-List” (Least Developed Countries) receive a scholarship of 1,025 euros.
  • Payment of a country-specific travel allowance (exception: Western Europe), see: travel allowance)
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
  • Please note: Course fees and accommodation expenses are usually deducted directly from scholarship payments by the language course provider so that the grant holder is possibly paid only the difference to the full amount of the scholarship by the course provider.

Selection

  • A selection committee reviews applications
  • The most important selection criteria are:
    – previous academic achievements
    – convincing arguments for choice of study programme and subject
    – knowledge of German

  • Copy of university degree certificate with final grade(s), if available (with German or English translation)

2. To be submitted by post

  • The “Application summary”, which is generated in the portal in PDF format and which can be printed out after the online application procedure is completed; please send 2 copy/copies to the application address
  • A recent reference from a university teacher which provides information about your qualifications; please enclose one copy of the reference in a sealed envelope with each copy of your application. Please regard the instructions given on the tab “Submitting an application“.
