These Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships allow successful applicants to benefit from the expertise provided by universities in low and middle income countries around the Commonwealth. They are majority funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP). The scholarships give talented students – who can be from any Commonwealth country other than the host country – the opportunity to gain a Master’s degree while developing new skills and experiencing life in another country.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a citizen of a Commonwealth country, other than the host country.
Applicants must hold a Bachelors degree of at least upper second level.

Benefits

The scholarships are fully-funded, providing full tuition fees, a return economy flight, an arrival allowance, and a regular stipend (living allowance).
They are for Master’s courses only and are not applicable to distance learning courses.

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships 2018/2019 for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD) in New Zealand Universities (Fully Funded)

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are prestigious scholarships that recognise New Zealand’s history and ties to the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Scholarships are part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) – an international programme under which Commonwealth countries offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commwealth states. The purpose of the scholarships is set out in the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (external link), with the following key principles to:

promote mutual cooperation and share educational experience among all Commonwealth countries
be available across the Commonwealth
recognise and promote the highest level of intellectual achievement.

NZ Commonwealth Scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand Government’s overseas aid and development programme. They are managed by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

Eligible countries

The following Commonwealth countries are eligible to apply:

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are available for the following postgraduate qualifications:

Master’s Degree (1 – 2 years)
PhD (up to 3.5 years)

Financial benefits

Our scholarships provide the following financial support:

full tuition fees
living allowance (stipend) – NZ$480 per week. This is a contribution to basic living expenses
an establishment allowance – NZ$3000. This is a contribution to assist with set up costs in New Zealand – for example it can be used towards accommodation expenses, text books, study materials
medical and travel insurance
travel to and from your home country – this is for travel from your home country at the start of the scholarship, and for you to return to your home country at the end of your scholarship. Note that we offer our scholarships for the shortest amount of time needed for you to complete the academic programme.
home leave or reunion travel for some scholars
assistance with research and thesis costs for many postgraduate research students

How to apply

The application process for a New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship is different to other New Zealand Scholarships. Applicants must submit their applications to their country’s ‘Nominating Agency’ first. The Nominating Agency then ‘nominates’ two applicants from the submitted applications to send to the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Read the Commonwealth section of the How to Apply page carefully before you submit an application.

Application Process:

The application process for a New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship is different to other New Zealand Scholarships. Applicants must submit their paper applications to their country’s ‘Nominating Agency’ first. The Nominating Agency then ‘nominates’ two applicants from the submitted applications to send to the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Read the below information carefully before you submit an application.

Note: Applications are open, and will close on 30 March. Applications must arrive at your country’s Commonwealth Nominating Agency by 30 March 2018.

Step 1: Prepare to apply

Check that you meet all eligibility criteria.
Follow the steps under ‘Getting Started’ above. (The selection process is very competitive and your choice of study must align to one of these sectors to go on to be shortlisted.)
If you want to pursue a PhD or a Masters by Thesis you should also start contacting and securing a potential supervisor for your PhD. You will need to have a Letter of Support from a supervisor should you go on to be shortlisted.

Step 2: Complete your application form

Step 3: Submit your application to your nominating agency

The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development has announced the call for applications for the 2016 Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s & PhD available in South Africa, which commence in January 2016.

The Master’s Degree awards, which are up to two years in duration, are open to citizens of any Commonwealth country, other than South Africa, and the awards are tenable at any Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) member university, in South Africa.
Applicants for the PhD awards, which was put in place with the support of the David & Elaine Potter Foundation, must be citizens of an African Commonwealth country, other than South Africa.
The award is for a total of three years.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is a unique programme. Since its establishment in 1959, it has provided opportunities for over 30,000 citizens of all Commonwealth countries to study in other member countries. Following the establishment of the CSFP endowment fund in 2009, a new strand of Commonwealth Scholarships located in low and middle income countries is available.

As part of the CSFP programme, New Zealand offers New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships to candidates from developing Commonwealth countries for postgraduate study (Master’s and PhD) in New Zealand universities on a contestable basis. New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are highly competitive and for top level graduates.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries.

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are funded the by the New Zealand Aid Programme and managed by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The selection process in New Zealand is managed by Universities New Zealand.

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholars can only study at these New Zealand universities:

Eligible Africa Countries

Students of participating developing Commonwealth country can apply for this scholarship:

Africa: Botswana, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Eligibility:

To be eligible to be considered for a Commonwealth Scholarship an applicant must:

Have citizenship of a participating developing Commonwealth country; permanent residents of a participating country are not eligible to apply;
Be residing in their country of citizenship, preferably for at least two years prior to application;
Not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand or Australia, or another developed country, except where their country does not issue passports and they hold a New Zealand passport (i.e. the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau);
Not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds, or who is eligible to hold, citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country, except where their country does not issue passports and they hold a New Zealand passport (i.e. the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau);
Be applying to commence a new qualification and not be seeking funding for one already commenced at PhD or Masters level;
Satisfy the admission requirements of the New Zealand university at which the qualification is to be undertaken, including English language criteria;
Have been working in their country of citizenship, preferably for at least two years prior to application;
Hold a first degree of upper second class Honours (or above); or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification, which will normally be a Master’s degree;
Be available to commence their academic studies in New Zealand at the start of the New Zealand academic year in February 2016;
Have already secured admission to their preferred New Zealand university; evidence of admission (eg. a letter of offer) is required with the application form; a conditional letter of offer from a New Zealand university is sufficient to allow an application to be accepted;

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships scheme funds tuition and enrolment fees, an establishment allowance, a basic stipend, approved scholarship-related travel, some course-related costs, and medical and travel insurance. Each Scholarship provides:

Travel: International, and New Zealand domestic, air travel at the start and end of the scholarship for awardee, and reimbursement of awardee’s visa costs. In addition, a reunion travel entitlement may be available to awardees who have left dependants in their home country.
Tuition Fees and other compulsory institutional course costs.
Postgraduate research and thesis allowance: An allowance of NZ$1,500, and a return economy airfare to awardee’s home country for overseas fieldwork, if research component is 50% or greater.
Medical and Travel Insurancee. Establishment allowance: NZ$3,000 paid on arrival in New Zealand to meet text book costs and to assist with other set up costs in New Zealand. At the beginning of each additional study year NZ$1,000 will be paid to cover the full year.
Living Allowance: The annual rate of NZ$21,580 (NZ$415 per week) is paid fortnightly and is a contribution to living costs for day-to-day expenses, including accommodation (rent or board), food costs, utility expenses (telephone, electricity etc.), transport, personal items, and course-related costs (stationery, field trips, workshops etc.).
