2016 Hult Prize Challenge: Crowded Urban Spaces

Building sustainable, scalable and fast-growing social enterprises that double the income of $10 million people residing in crowded urban spaces, by better connecting people, goods, services and capital.

The Hult Prize Foundation is a start-up accelerator for budding young social entrepreneurs emerging from the world’s universities. Named as one of the top five ideas changing the world by President Bill Clinton and TIME Magazine, the annual competition for the Hult Prize aims to create and launch the most compelling social business ideas—start-up enterprises that tackle grave issues faced by billions of people. Winners receive USD1 Million in seed capital, as well as mentorship and advice from the international business community.

The Hult Prize is offered in partnership with Former US President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative. It is hosted and supported by Hult International Business School. And it is generously funded by Swedish entrepreneur Bertil Hult and his family. It has been called the “Nobel Prize for Students” by media outlets world-wide.

Participating annually are thousands of students from 130 countries, representing over 600 institutions of higher education

Eligibility:

  • Open to universities, colleges and students on every continent.

The Challenge:

  • Each year, a critical social problem is selected by President Bill Clinton and a challenge issued.
  • Teams of 3-4 students are challenged to develop a custom tailored innovative start-up enterprise to eradicate the problem.
  • Access to Education. Clean water. Affordable housing. Clean energy. Solar Power.  Food insecurity. Healthcare. These are a few of the issues competitors have tackled since the competition’s inception.

2016

  • The 2016 Hult Prize Challenge as selected by President Bill Clinton is Crowded Urban Spaces. Participants will look for ways to leverage connectivity to make life for the dwellers of these spaces better.  Focus will be placed on doubling income through specifically better connecting the residents of these spaces to products, people, services and capital.

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world.

Each year,  the Clinton Global Initiative University hosts a meeting where students, university representatives, topic experts, and celebrities come together to discuss and develop innovative solutions to pressing global challenges.

President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will host the ninth annual CGI U meeting from April 1-3, 2016 at the University of California, Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay Area. More than $750,000 in funding will be available to select CGI U 2016 students through the University Network and other opportunities to help them turn their ideas into action.

Requirements:

  • Students must be 18 years of age or older and enrolled in an institution of higher education at the time of the CGI U meeting in order to apply.
  • To be considered for admission, all applicants are required to design a Commitment to Action in one of CGI U’s five focus areas: Education, Environment and Climate Change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health. All invited attendees will be notified by late December 2015.

Application

Students interested in attending CGI U can apply as either an individual or a group.

Individual: A student may apply to attend CGI U as an individual. This student makes a Commitment to Action that he or she will carry out individually, or applies to attend CGI U as the sole representative of a larger organization.

Group: Up to three students may apply to attend CGI U as a group. These students collaborate on a Commitment to Action and apply to attend the meeting together to represent their project or initiative.

The group must appoint a group leader to fill out the first part of the CGI U application (which includes the Commitment to Action), and the additional group members will receive emails from CGI U with instructions on how to complete their portions of the application. It is the responsibility of the group leader to ensure that all group members complete their portions of the application

Regional Rounds of competition will be held in Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai on March 13-14, 2015. How will you change the world with US$1,000,000 in seed capital to scale your start-up?

Moving forward with the sixth annual Hult Prize, thousands of university students worldwide will team up to create start-ups aimed at solving an issue faced by billions in need. More than 10,000 applicants will begin the journey, and only 300 start-ups from around the world will move on to pitch their start-up ideas at one of five global locations, including: Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai.

A sixth regional final will be held on-line following the completion of the five in-person regional final events. Up for grabs is the coveted Hult Prize which comes with US$1,000,000 in start-up funding.  While there is only one winner, each regional champion will get to spend the summer inside of the Hult Prize Accelerator —an innovative incubator for social enterprise and will receive a one year membership into the CGI.

Theme: Solving Early Childhood Education in the Urban Slum

The challenge specifically asks teams to build sustainable and scalable social enterprises to address the early childhood education gap in kids 0-6 years old.

How to Apply:

Form a team of 3-5 students from your university and submit an application to participate at any of the five regional finals locations held in: Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai

Selection Criteria:

  • Regional Finals will be held on March 13-14, 2015.
  • Approximately 50-60 teams per region, will move on to present their innovative start-up ideas to an executive jury made up of regional CEOs, Non-Profit leaders and Social Entrepreneurs.
  • A regional champion will be selected live at the conclusion of the event and will receive a one year membership into the Clinton Global Initiative and an opportunity to spend the summer at the Hult Prize Accelerator – an innovative incubator for social enterprise

The Hult Prize:

  • Following the conclusion of your time working in the Hult Prize Accelerator, you will attend CGI’s annual meeting in September, 2015.
  • Within the meeting agenda, President Bill Clinton will host the Hult Prize Global Finals where regional champions will pitch their start-ups in-front of a world-class audience, including Mohammad Yunus, who along with other notable global leaders will select and award the winning team the Hult Prize, along with USD1 million in start-up capital.

Application Process:

  • Throughout the year, and as a prerequisite of attending the CGI U meeting, students develop their own Commitments to Action: new, specific, and measurable initiatives that address pressing challenges on campus, in local communities, or around the world.
  • Commitments range from manufacturing wheelchairs for developing countries to establishing campus bike share programs, from creating free vision clinics to developing e-learning applications for mobile phones.
  • Throughout the year, students are also invited to apply to become CGI U Campus Representatives.
  • Colleges and universities can engage with CGI U by joining the CGI University Network to support and mentor innovative student commitment-makers from their respective campuses by providing seed funding for new projects and initiatives.

Application:

  • Funding will be available to select CGI U 2015 students to help them turn their ideas into action.
  • 60 colleges and universities have already joined the CGI University Network, pledging to provide over $750,000 total to student attendees from member universities.

What is 100 Bar None?

100 Bar None is an initiative to enable young people from 100 less represented countries to attend the One Young World Summit 2013. The scheme will allocate full Summit sponsorship to 100 candidates from countries often less visible on the world stage.

At the One Young Summit 2012 in Pittsburgh, USA we were joined by some of the brightest minds and active change-makers from 183 countries. Among non-governmental events, only the Olympic Games gathers together more countries.

Whilst we are extremely proud of this, our aim is to have all 196 countries represented at the One Young World Summit 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

100 Bar None is an essential part of our strategy to achieve this goal.

What does the sponsorship cover?

100 Bar None sponsorship covers the full delegate fee of £2,750 + 14% South African VAT. This fee includes the cost of:

  • Delegate access to the One Young World Summit 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Hotel accommodation on a shared basis on the nights of 2, 3 and 4 October
  • Catering which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner on 2, 3 and 4 October and breakfast only on 5 October
  • Transport to and from OR Tambo International Airport, transport between the Summit accommodation and the Summit venue
  • Summit hand-outs and support materials

Flights to and from Johannesburg are also covered by 100 Bar None sponsorship.

The Hult Prize is a start-up accelerator for social good. Dedicated to launching the next wave of social entrepreneurs through identifying, funding, mentoring, advising and launching new social businesses.

College and university students from around the world are being called to action to compete in one of five regional rounds of competition held in: Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai.  Teams of 4-5 students will be charged with developing ideas for social enterprises that can conquer one of modern day’s most solvable global challenges – the food crisis. The global winner will receive US$1,000,000 in start-up capital to launch their new social enterprise!

In partnership with President Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative, the Hult Prize has created the world’s largest student movement for social impact and the world’s largest crowdsourcing platform, dedicated to solving the most pressing social challenges on the planet.

HOW TO APPLY:
Student teams interested in participating in the event should visit the website to fill out the application here. Applying is easy and consists of four easy steps:

Teams selected to compete in the Regional Finals will be responsible for securing their own travel arrangement to and from the event. Training, pre-event mixer, food and drink throughout the day and post-event reception will all be covered.

Important Dates
•    March 3- Video submissions open and voting begins.
•    April 19- Video submission period closes, voting continues until May 12.
•    May 12- Voting period closes.
•    May 13- Top 10 vote getters move into final round and submit supporting
documents.
•    May 20- Global Online Champion announced.
•    All times based on PST and deadlines are 11:59pm PST

Team members
•    A team is a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 5 members.
•    All teams members must be current students at the time of the
video submission.
•    A maximum of one alumnus who cannot also be a faculty member of the
school may 
participate on a team.
•    All participants must have a connection with the same school or university.

Selection Process
There will be two rounds:

A public voting round
A final selection round for the top 10 vote getters.
