2016 City of Johannesburg Educating Digital Internship Programme, South Africa

The City of Joburg Educating Digital Intern Programme coined C.O.J.E.D.I, is a programme initiated by the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in January 2015 as part of the foundation phase of developing a smart city.

The COJEDI programme focuses on driving innovation & entrepreneurship through critical thinking, preparing students for employment and empowering them to significantly participate in the mainstream of the ICT sector and the burgeoning economy.

The strategy is to recruit and train 1000 of the City’s brightest young information technology (IT) minds to be part of the digital internship programme. The project supports the Gauteng infrastructure investment programme launched by the Premier focusing in the area of ICT and broadband.

Eligbility Requirements

The participants of the COJEDI programme will be equipped to technically service the needs of the Municipality’s smart city objectives. 

Targeted Beneficiaries:

  • Youth between the ages of 18 and 35 – linked to Youth Employment Accord
  • The majority of the participants should be black females from previously disadvantaged areas, mainly from the townships and other informal settlements in the City
  • Unemployed graduates
  • Persons with disabilities who have not been given opportunities of participating in the mainstream economy.
  • NEET – (youth not in employment, education or training)

Requirements:

  • Maths and Science
  • Higher Education With A 1 Or 2 Year Diploma
  • Location : You Must Reside In Johannesburg

To be able to generate, facilitate and accelerate skills development processes for the program participants at all levels, the COJEDI programme has linked itself to innovation and future technology trends with new skills development programmes. The participants of the programme will be undergoing training in four technical skills programmes:

  • Microsoft Systems Engineering
  • Cisco Network Associates
  • Fibre Optics
  • Web Development

What: A 3 month technical bootcamp, 1 month of soft-skill training followed by 6 months of integrated learning in the workspace

The City of Joburg is sponsoring 1000 of our cities most ambitious youths to upskill their IT knowledge.

The City of Johannesburg is looking for 1 000 of its brightest young information technology (IT) minds to be part of a new digital intern programme.

The City of Joburg Educating Digital Interns (C.O.J.E.D.I) programme is set to award three successful applicants 10-month IT courses. They will be able to choose between courses on industry leading Network Engineering solutions, Website Design and Development, as well as Fibre Optic Development.

The internship is open to matriculants with mathematics and science. The programme is also for applicants with one or two-year diplomas and a serious digital aptitude, who reside in Johannesburg.
Come digitise your mind with what promises to be 10 months of exciting, highly intensive, next generation digital programs with 3 great courses across the digital spectrum as well as a leadership, innovation and life skills course. A 3 month technical bootcamp, 1 month of soft-skill training followed by 6 months of integrated learning in the workspace of some of South Africa’s leading digital enterprises.
Requirements:
  • The Challenge is open to the public and any person, between the ages including the age of 18 and 35.
  • All applicants need to be resident of Johannesburg, Gauteng South Africa, but need not necessarily be South African.
  • All applicants must be in possession of a valid matric certificate with maths and science as subjects OR a 1 or 2 year diploma in Information technology or a related field.
  • All applicants must choose one of three courses. Each course intake is subject to availability, upon one or more course being filled, applicants may have the opportunity to fall into one of the other course, availability permitting and at the discretion of the City of Johannesburg and or its appointed agents.
  • Applicants may be eligible for a stipend, however this will be at the discretion of the City of Johannesburg and or its appointed agents.

  •  They can also use Facebook to motivate why they should be the beneficiaries of the 10-month courses.

Selection:

The internship programme’s competitive edge is to establish why each of the applicants is the best candidate to turn Joburg into a smart city of the future in the current digital space. It is a platform for the applicants to demonstrate their ambition, motivation, innovation and self-belief.
