Applications are now open for the 2024/2025 Chatham House Richard and Susan Hayden Academy Fellowship 2024/2025.

This fellowship is a joint initiative with Richard and Susan Hayden. It offers candidates at the early-to-mid-stage of their career the opportunity to spend ten months at Chatham House working on an individual research project of their choosing.

Academy Fellows are professionals from a wide range of backgrounds including government, research, academia, civil society, journalism, for example, who are at the early to mid-point of their career and who are passionate about identifying evidence-based solutions to some of the world’s most pressing international challenges. They are often experts in their individual fields who show exceptional promise as emerging leaders in their home countries, regions or even internationally.

Selection criteria

The successful applicant will:

  • Have the relevant background experience, including experience in the field of the proposed research, as demonstrated through a CV
  • Have experience conducting independent research and hold an undergraduate/postgraduate level qualification (or have equivalent professional training or experience in a relevant area)
  • Have proven leadership experience or potential
  • Show commitment to the Chatham House mission, goals and values and to identifying evidence-based solutions to some of the world’s most pressing international challenges
  • Be able to communicate how the fellowship will enable them to create positive impact, in line with the Chatham House mission and overarching purpose of Academy Fellowships (outlined above)
  • Show motivation to undertake the fellowship, meet all fellowship deliverables, and take full advantage of the networks, events and opportunities offered at Chatham House
  • Demonstrate proficiency in speaking English

Benefits

Academy Fellows receive a monthly stipend of £2,365 for London living costs, including accommodation, utilities, food, transport, and other basic expenses.

In addition, the Academy will cover reasonable costs related to:

  • Relocation (Flights, train, etc. to/from the UK, three nights of accommodation, visas, extra cases/boxes, etc.)
  • Payment of the UK’s Immigration Healthcare Surcharge which allows access to the UK National Health Service (Note: you may be required to pay for dental and optical treatments and medicines prescribed by a doctor)
  • Research, outreach, and dissemination costs (fieldwork, travel, conferences, publication, roundtables, events, etc.)

Additionally, Fellows attend the Academy Leadership Programme through which they access:

  • Workshops, seminars, and events
  • Media training
  • Career coaching
  • Writing support
  • Networking opportunities, including with Chatham House staff, the Academy’s faculty and alumni
  • Chatham House membership upon completion of the fellowship

This fellowship is a joint initiative with Richard and Susan Hayden. It offers candidates at the early-to-mid-stage of their career the opportunity to spend ten months at Chatham House working on an individual research project of their choosing.

Contract type: Engagement in fellowship activities is a full-time time commitment throughout the 10 month duration (between October 2023 and July 2024).

A fellow’s time will be split between three key areas:

  • Completing a personal research project: the fellow will choose and design an individual project to undertake with the guidance of a Chatham House expert (approximately 60%).
  • Contributing to the ongoing research activities: working with their host research team and other Chatham House teams as appropriate (approximately 20%).
  • Leadership Programme: A core part of Academy Fellowships, the Leadership Programme aims to develop the knowledge, network and self-awareness of fellows, and to equip them with important skills on which they can draw in their future careers as leaders in their field (approximately 20%).

Requirements

The fellowship is open to all nationalities.

This role is based in London, where we practice hybrid working, with employees expected to work from the office at least 2-3 days per week.

Benefits

  • The fellow will receive a monthly stipend to cover the costs of accommodation and subsistence. The Richard and Susan Hayden Academy Fellowship is open to individuals who are dynamic, creative, driven and excited to contribute to Chatham House’s research teams. As a fellow, you will have the opportunity to analyse key global and national challenges and develop policy solutions.

Academy fellowships provide emerging leaders at the early to mid-point of their career with the opportunity to develop their leadership, research, networking, and communication skills, deepen their knowledge and understanding of critical issues in international affairs, publish written work and speak at key events, as well as expand their personal networks and reach – all of which will enable them to contribute to positive change. Fellows join a diverse cohort of professionals from a variety of sectors including academia, NGOs, business, government, or the media who are looking for the next step or transition in their career.

The fellowship is open to all nationalities.

All applicants should possess knowledge of, and an interest in, international affairs, their chosen area of research, and Chatham House’s mission and research.

This fellowship is a joint initiative with Richard and Susan Hayden. It offers candidates at the mid-stage of their career the opportunity to spend ten months at Chatham House working on a personal project of their choosing.

Fellows take part in the core work of the Institute, developing their skills through the leadership programme, and furthering their professional network in the field of international affairs.

Citizenship

The fellowship is open to all nationalities.

Education

It is required that the applicant holds a completed BA degree or equivalent. Master’s degree with an international focus is preferred.

Career

The fellowship is aimed at candidates at the mid-stage of their career and who come from academia, NGOs, business, government departments, civil society or the media. They should possess knowledge of, and an interest in, the policy challenges related to global governance.

Age restrictions

We do not impose age restrictions for applicants. However, Academy fellowships are aimed at individuals at the mid-stage of their career.

Can I undertake other work or study at the same time as my fellowship?

Fellows are expected to work full-time towards their fellowship and therefore it is not possible to undertake a fellowship at the same time as pursuing work or studies (such as for a PhD).

Duration

The fellowship lasts ten months between October 2021 and July 2022.

Location

The fellow will be based full-time at Chatham House in London. However, working patterns will be flexible and some aspects of the programme may be held online, in line with safe Covid-19 working practices.

Benefits

A fellow’s time will be split between three key areas:

Leadership Programme

All fellows participate in and contribute to the Leadership Programme which encompasses the following components:

  • Intensive induction week
    Academy fellowships begin with an intensive five-day induction week to become familiarized with the elements of the fellowships, meet their host research programme and have their first personal development coaching session.
  • Weekly discussion seminars
    These sessions highlight the principal substantive and skills-based areas vital for informed and effective international leadership. Fellows are expected to contribute to and learn from one another’s experience.
  • Global Introductions off-site visits (subject to latest Covid-19 regulations)
    These half-day visits take place approximately every two months and allow fellows to meet with leaders and senior decision-makers from a variety of sectors. Previous visits have included the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Department for International Development, Standard Chartered, and Thomson Reuters.
  • Leadership workshops
    Fellows participate in half-day workshops focusing on specific aspects of leadership such as ‘Leadership in a new role’ and ‘Fostering innovation and entrepreneurship’.
  • Project presentations
    Fellows present updates on their research projects to help develop presentation skills, provide a forum for peer-review and to analyse issues outside their own area of expertise.
  • Personal development coaching
    Fellows have access to one-on-one sessions with a dedicated coach as a way to grow their self-awareness. Fellows work with the coach to set personal development objectives which they work to meet during their fellowship and beyond.
  • Media training
    Fellows learn effective interview skills needed for television and radio culminating in a mock interview from which they receive feedback on style and any areas of improvement
  • ‘Leadership in the 21st Century’ Breakfast Briefings
    All fellows benefit from priority access to the ‘Leadership in the 21st Century’ Breakfast Briefings series. There, they have the opportunity to discuss leadership experiences and learn in an informal setting with leaders from government, business, media and the non-profit sectors.
Remuneration and benefits

The fellow will receive a monthly stipend of £2,365. Modest provision is made for the costs of relocation, fieldwork and possible publication costs.

The stipend will cover London living costs, including accommodation, utilities, food, transport and other basic expenses. The following is intended to provide a rough guide on the cost of living essentials in London.

  • Accommodation: £125-150 per week for a shared house or room in halls of residence.
  • Bills (e.g. water, electricity, gas, internet): £70-100 per month.
  • Food: £40-60 per week.
  • Transport: £25-40 per week. Buying a monthly or annual Oyster travelcard will provide the best value.

Selection process:
  • Stage one: complete the application below. Once the submission period ends, all applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by our selection committee.
  • Stage two: shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview by Zoom. The interviews are carried out by a member of senior management at Chatham House and may include a senior representative of the organization sponsoring the fellowship. After this round, fellows will be selected and notified via email.
