Canon Collins Scholarships 2019/2020 for Postgraduate Study in South Africa (Funded)

Canon Collins Trust seeks to support exceptional individuals who are committed to social justice in Southern Africa and for whom a postgraduate qualification is an essential tool in working to create an open and just society.

In 2015 the Trust revised its South African scholarship awards policy. We now offer scholarships only to those studying in three areas:

  1. Justice, which includes Law, Economics, Politics and the Environment
  2. Education: policy and practice
  3. Humanities, which includes Literature, History, Anthropology and the Arts

Applications for courses that are not within these areas (for example MBAs, medical sciences, sports sciences, applied sciences) will be rejected.

Requirements:

In addition, to be considered for a scholarship under this programme you  must:

  • be a national of, or have refugee status in, one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe
  • be normally resident in one of the above countries
  • be in possession of a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • be studying or applying to study at a South African university

In 2020, the value of the scholarship package will range from R20,000 to R100,000 depending on student circumstances. We support both full and part-time study and will consider applications from those who wish to study by distance learning.

We also organise an annual conference for current scholars, and hold several smaller events throughout the year. Scholarship holders are expected to participate in these activities and to become part of and contribute to our network.

Canon Collins Trust Scholarships 2019/2020 for Postgraduate Study in the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)

Canon Collins Trust offers scholarships to support taught masters degree programmes at certain UK universities.

School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

Canon Collins Trust partner with SOAS to co-fund one scholarship annually. Applicants must:

  • Be a national of, and normally resident in one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application.
  • Be applying for a full-time one-year taught masters course in any subject.
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field.

University of Sussex

Canon Collins Trust partner with the Mandela Scholarship Fund at the University of Sussex to co-fund two awards annually. Applicants must:

  • Be a national of, and normally resident in one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application.
  • Be applying for a full-time one-year taught masters course in any subject.
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field.

Benefits:

All these scholarships cover full tuition fees, a monthly stipend, a return economy flight, a settling-in allowance and other support whilst in the UK.

Application Process

The online application form is of primary importance as it serves as the basis for assessment. The online application form can be found on the Canon Collins Trust website, when the call for applications is open.

You will find full instructions online when you start a new form. It is your responsibility to ensure that your application is complete and accurate before submitting your application online. All sections of the form need to be complete before the system will allow the application form to be submitted.

Information can be saved and the application form edited until the applicant chooses to submit. All applicants are required to submit the following supporting documentation:

Certified copy of undergraduate degree certificate, if available
Certified academic transcripts
Reference letters from two referees
ID document (The following are acceptable: Passport, Birth Certificate, Driver’s License)
Proof of refugee status, if applicable.Ideally, you should submit an academic reference (preferably from your current supervisor) and a reference from an employer.
You should ask your referees to write a reference that relates to your application for this scholarship. It should outline your strengths as an applicant, demonstrate your capacity to study at the level required, explain how you would benefit from further study and identify your potential impact in the future.
