Australia Awards are prestigious international scholarships offering the next generation of global leaders an opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Australia Awards Scholarships, funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, address the development needs of Australia’s partner countries, as well as strengthening links between people and organisations.

Master’s level scholarships are offered to eligible outstanding professionals from civil society, private and public sectors, who on completion of their studies are expected to return to their home country to drive change and contribute to development.

The postgraduate study opportunity provided by Australia Awards Scholarships, undertaken in Australia, provides high-quality education and training to talented Africans in specified sectors, in which Australia is recognised as having world-class expertise and experience.Priority sectors include:

• agricultural productivity
• extractives
• public policy

Eligibility criteria

For eligible mid-career professionals, who receive an Australia Awards Scholarship, the following benefits will generally apply:

• Your minimum academic qualification is at least a four year bachelor’s degree or equivalent (as indicated in the relevant country’s requirements)
• You are a mid-career professional, currently employed in a relevant field and sector Visit https://www.australiaawardsafrica.org/awards/apply/ to review country-specific sectors
• You meet relevant postgraduate work experience requirements (as indicated in the relevant country’s eligibility criteria)
• You can demonstrate a clear vision of how the knowledge and skills that you will gain will be used to drive policy reform and improve practice in your home country
• Your English proficiency is sufficient to enable full participation in a training course delivered in English. (Applicants from Madagascar and Mozambique may be supported to reach a satisfactory English proficiency level)
• You meet all the requirements of the Australian Government for the appropriate student visa (subclass 500)

2015/2016 Australia Awards Masters Scholarships for Africans to study in Australia.

In Africa, the Australian Government offers scholarships and fellowships under the Australia Awards for African nationals to undertake long term studies leading to a postgraduate degree and short term training leading to the acquisition of new skills. Long term awards include Australia Award Scholarships to undertake Masters-level studies in Australian universities.

Scholarships for Masters studies in Australia are being offered to eligible African candidates for postgraduate studies commencing in 2015. Applications for study commencing in 2016 will open on 1 September 2014.

Focus sectors for Masters Awards reflect areas which have been identified as priorities by partner governments and in which Australia is recognised as having world-leading expertise and experience.

Current priority sectors include:

Agriculture and Food Security;
Health;
Natural Resource Management including Mining and Mining Governance;
Public Policy; and
Water and Sanitation.

Scholarship Worth:

Australia Awards Scholarships generally cover the following fees and entitlements:

Full tuition fees
Return air travel
Establishment allowance
Contribution to living expenses
An Introductory Academic Program
Overseas Student Health Cover
Visa expenses.

Subject to requirements and eligibility, Australia Awards Scholarships may also cover:

Pre-course English language training fees
Supplementary academic support
Fieldwork (for research purposes only)
Reunion airfare (for unaccompanied awardees

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to receive an Australia Awards Scholarship, applicants must:

Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing the scholarship
Be a citizen of a participating country (as listed on the Australia Awards website) and be residing in and applying for the scholarship from their country of citizenship
not be married, engaged to, or a de facto of a person who holds, or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency, at any time during the application, s election or mobilisation phases.
not be current serving military personnel
not be a citizen of Australia,hold permanent residency in Australia or be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently
not be applying for another long- term Australia Award unless they have resided outside of Australia for twice the length of the total time that they were in Australia (for example, a previous awardee who has been on an Australia Awards Scholarship in Australia for four years will not be eligible to apply for another Australia Awards Scholarship until they have been home for eight years)
have satisfied any specific criteria established by the Program Area or the government of the applicant’s country of citizenship
be able to satisfy the admission requirements of the institution at which the award is to be undertaken

Australia Awards in Africa (AAA), an initiative of the Australian Government, is a pan-African program of development scholarships and fellowships that offers 1,000 postgraduate scholarships each year to eligible African professionals.

Australia is committed to developing the capacity and leadership skills of Africans to enable them to contribute effectively to development in their home countries. Over the past three years, the number of scholarships available for African professionals has increased ten-fold to a total of 1,000 development awards annually. One-quarter of all Australia’s development scholarships are now directed to Africa.

Australia Awards, a cornerstone of the Australian Government’s development assistance program for Africa, provide access to postgraduate education, training and professional development opportunities for suitably qualified Africans from eligible countries. On their return to the workplace, Australia Awards Alumni are expected to contribute actively to development in their home countries.

Short course training under the Africa Fellowships enables scholars to participate in short courses of up to three months. Training is available for experienced employees from African public, private and non-government organisations (civil society) in the following fields: Agriculture; Health; Mining; Public Policy, including Diplomacy, Organisational and Employee Development, Trade and Public-Private Partnerships.

Award types include:

Short Course Awards are available for studies in a range of priority sectors including Agriculture, Maternal and Child Health, Mining Governance and Public Policy. Studies are conducted at locations in Africa and in Australia for periods up to 3 months. Short course awards are available to eligible applicants from 51 African countries.

Long-Term Awards are postgraduate scholarships that lead to an academic qualification from an Australian university. For studies commencing in 2014, Long-Term Awards are available to eligible applicants from 28 African countries.

Australian Awards Scholarships, to undertake higher degree studies in Australia at Masters level.
Australia Awards – Africa Fellowships, to undertake short-term, targeted professional training courses, in Australia and/or in Africa, in a range of development-focused sectors.

Australia Awards (Fellowships)

Priority areas are:

Agriculture/Food Security (Soil and Water Conservation Agriculture, Livestock and Post-harvest Management)
Mining (Geospatial Information Systems, Managing the Social and Environmental Impacts of Mining and Mining Resources: Regulation and Revenue Management)
Public Policy (including Diplomacy, Public-Private Partnerships and Trade)

Eligibility Criteria

You must not be more than 50 years of age at the date of your application.
You must have at least three (3) years’ relevant post graduate work experience. This work experience must be in a role relevant to your proposed field of study and to your employment organisation type (e.g. public sector applicants should demonstrate public sector work experience, and so on). Preference will be given to candidates with greater periods of experience.
You possess, as a minimum, a Bachelors degree (or the equivalent) from a recognised Institution of at least 4 years in length with at least a 3rd Class Pass.
Public sector candidates must comply with Government of your country regulations for government employees wishing to apply for scholarships
Public sector, private sector and civil society candidates must provide evidence of completion of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) (for Nigerian candidates- visit adsafrica.com.au for country specific requirements) when they apply.
You must not already hold, or be studying for, a Masters degree
You must be willing to make a formal commitment to return to your current employment following completion of the award
