ASC Leiden Visiting Fellowship Programme 2025 for African Researchers (Fully Funded to the Netherlands)

Applications are now open for the 2025 African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) Visiting Fellowship Programme. The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands devoted entirely to the study of Africa. It is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University.

The ASCL has an open call for fellowships for 2025. A fellowship is for a period of 90 days:

  • January-February-March; or
  • April-May-June; or
  • September-October-November.

Requirements
In order to be eligible for a Visiting Research Fellowship, the applicant has to meet all of the following criteria.
He or she must:

  • Hold a PhD degree, by the time of applying;
  • Have conducted research, as part of the PhD and/or in later projects; with a focus on Africa;
  • Be actively pursuing an academic/research career;
  • Have published books, book chapters and/or journal articles in recent years that meet international standards;
  • In accordance with visa regulations, be ready to return to the country of which he/she is a citizen and/or a current resident upon completion of the fellowship.

Benefits

A research fellowship includes:

  • A return ticket (economy class).
  • Coverage of living costs (fixed amount).
  • Accommodation in Leiden: a fellow is provided with his/her own single bed/sitting room. Kitchen and bathroom are to be shared with a maximum of two other fellows (male/female). The rooms are on the first floor, with the landlord and landlady living on the ground floor. If the offered accommodation is unacceptable for the fellow (for instance fellow who wish to travel with a partner, or child) he/she is expected to look for alternative accommodation him/herself in Leiden or its vicinity. Alternative accommodation will not be paid for by the fellowship/institute. The institute cannot assist the fellow in their search for alternative accommodation.
  • A medical/liability insurance (please note that this insurance does not cover the cost of treatment of a pre-existing medical condition).
  • The use of (shared) office facilities and of library facilities.

When selected

  • The selected fellows will be planned (as much as possible) according to their preferred fellowship period as indicated on the application form.
  • They will receive the papers required for a Schengen visa application. Responsibility for the visa application lies with the fellows.
  • Fellows are expected to be physically present at the Centre in Leiden as much as possible, and least for 20 hours per week. Travel abroad for a seminar or work visit is permitted in prior consultation with the Institute. Travel costs abroad during the fellowship are at the expensive of the fellow.
  • Fellows are expected to give at least one seminar during their stay, to be planned and organised by the CRG with which they are linked.

Visiting research fellows use their time in Leiden for data analysis and/or writing, often on a joint project with one or more ASCL staff members. A visiting research fellowship is for a maximum of 90 days.

On occasion, the ASCL also hosts self financed visitors (PhD students or visiting academics).

Requirements
In order to be eligible for a Visiting Research Fellowship, the applicant has to meet all of the following criteria.
He or she must:

  • Hold a PhD degree, by the time of applying;
  • Have conducted research, as part of the PhD and/or in later projects; with a focus on Africa;
  • Be actively pursuing an academic/research career;
  • Have published books, book chapters and/or journal articles in recent years that meet international standards;
  • In accordance with visa regulations, be ready to return to the country of which he/she is a citizen and/or a current resident upon completion of the fellowship.

In the assessment of applications that meet these requirements,

  1. Preference will be given to applicants based in Africa. ‘Africa’ here refers to the member states of the African Union. ‘Based in’ Africa is understood to mean having lived in Africa during at least two of the last four years; and
  2. Emphasis will be placed on the quality, intended outputs and feasibility of the research project proposed for the fellowship.

How to apply
There is an open call for three 90-day fellowships to be scheduled in the first six months of 2022 (either January-February-March or April-May-June). Scholars who wish to apply, and who meet all of the criteria as mentioned above are requested to complete and send this online form (English/français). In addition, applicants have to send all of the following documents by email to [email protected]:

– an updated list of your publications
– a digital copy of two international publications, preferably journal articles
– a recent letter of recommendation

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. The deadline for applications is 20 June 2021. The final decision will be made and announced by mid-September 2021 at the latest.

Reviewing procedure
Each applicant has to indicate the CRG (Collaborative Research Group) they want to be linked with. Each CRG makes a shortlist of preferred candidates. The visiting fellowship committee makes the final decision on the basis of the CRG shortlists.

  • A daily stipend to cover living expenses.
  • Accommodation in Leiden: a fellow is provided with his/her own single bed/sitting room. Kitchen and bathroom are to be shared with a maximum of two other fellows (male/female). In order to be eligible for a LeidenASA 90-day Visiting Research Fellowship, the applicant has to fulfil all of the following criteria.
He or she must:

  • Hold a PhD degree, by the time of applying;
  • Have conducted research, as part of the PhD and/or in later projects; with a focus on Africa;
  • Be actively pursuing an academic/research career;
  • Have published books, book chapters and/or journal articles in recent years that meet international standards;
  • In accordance with visa regulations, be ready to return to the country of which he/she is a citizen and/or a current resident upon completion of the fellowship.

ASC Leiden University Visiting Research Fellowships 2018 for Africanists (Fully Funded to the Netherlands)

The ASC Leiden hosts visiting research fellows in the framework of the Leiden African Studies Assembly (Leiden ASA), a network for cooperation between Leiden based Africanists. Visiting research fellows use their time in Leiden for data analysis and/or writing, often on a joint project with one or more ASCL staff members and with Africanists at other institutes or faculties of Leiden University. A visiting research fellowship is for a maximum of 90 days.

Requirements for a 90-day visiting research fellowship

  • At the time of applying, the applicant must hold a PhD with a focus on Africa.
  • The applicant has to be fluent in English and/or French.
  • The applicant must have an active academic career.
  • The applicant must have recently published books and/or articles that meet international standards (at least three published articles in the past five years).
  • The research fellowship must contribute to interfaculty collaboration at Leiden University.
  • Preference is given to candidates employed by an African research institute with which Leiden University already has an MoU or aspires to have an MoU in the framework of the Leiden African Studies Assembly.
  • In accordance with visa regulations, applicants must be able to return to their country of origin after their fellowship.
