Each year, the Academy of Research and Higher Education (ARES) grants an average of 150 fellowships in the framework of the Masters and 70 fellowships in the framework of the internships to the nationals of the countries of the South.

Are you a national of an ARES partner country, holder of a bachelor’s or master’s degree, you have professional experience and you wish to specialize by pursuing studies in Belgium?

Within the framework of the Belgian policy for development cooperation, the Minister for Development Cooperation and the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation entrust the Belgian Higher Education Institutions with the preparation of Postgraduate Programmes (Advanced Masters) and Training Programmes that are specifically oriented towards young professionals from developing countries.

International Courses and Training Programmes are part of the global study programmes of the Higher Education Institutions. They are open to all students who satisfy the conditions of qualification but aim at proposing training units that distinguish themselves by their openness towards specific development issues.

Eligibility Requirements

The following will apply for the selection of holders of scholarships:

Originally from a developing country. To be eligible, applicants must reside and work in their own country at the time of filing;
Only nationals of the following countries are eligible to apply for scholarships ARES: Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia ( only for courses in English ), Haiti, Madagascar, Morocco, Niger, Peru, Philippines, DR Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Vietnam ;
Either under the age of 40 for courses and under 45 for training periods at the start of training;
Either holds a diploma comparable to a diploma of the second cycle of Belgian university education. However, for certain types of training, different requirements may be set out, which will be specified below;
Demonstrates a professional occupation in a developing country of at least two years after completing his / her second cycle or three years after the end of his / her studies when the candidate holds a post-graduate diploma from a university in an industrialized country;
Good knowledge of written and spoken French. For courses organized in another language, it is necessary to have a good knowledge of the language of the course, written and spoken. The candidate will also be asked to commit to learning French to participate in everyday life in Belgium;

The academic curriculum
For courses, priority will be given to candidates who are already holders of a diploma third cycle, save in exceptional circumstances duly justified in the application.
Priority will be given to candidates who have not already received a grant in Belgium.

The ARES scholarships offer you the opportunity to follow a one-year advanced bachelor’s or master’s degree program or a 2-to-6-month continuing education program within a higher education institution of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in Belgium.

Do you come from an ARES partner country, hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree, have professional experience and would like to specialize by pursuing studies in Belgium? Student of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation? How can ARES help you in your development cooperation projects?

Are you a national of an ARES partner country? Do you have a higher education degree? Do you have professional experience and would you like to deepen your skills in a development-related topic?

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible, the applicant must:

Be national, reside and work in one of the following countries: Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Peru, Philippines, Republic of Guinea (Conakry), Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
Hold a diploma comparable to a graduate level degree (300 credits ECTS) from Belgian university studies for advanced masters and countinuing education courses (equivalent to Bac+5); Hold a diploma comparable to a undergraduate level degree (180 credits ECTS) for advanced bachelors (equivalent to Bac+3). The candidate must have held the relevant academic degree for a maximum of 20 years at the time of the start of the course. This maximum period is increased by one year by childbirth and/or adoption.
Possess relevant professional experience in a ARES partner country of at least two years after graduate studies for advanced bachelors, after postgraduate studies for advanced masters and countinuing education courses.
Complete the application in the language in which the training is given and can attest a good written and spoken knowledge of it. Moreover, knowing a minimum of French allows for a good integration into daily life in Belgium.
Apply for only one training course.

Please note that compliance with the admissibility criteria does not guarantee selection and eligibility for the course (see Selection Criteria).

Applicants should not obtain prior admission to one of the French-speaking institution in Belgium in order to be considered for ARES scholarship.

Application files will not be considered if they:

are not completed in their entirety and are not accompanied by the required documents (certified copy of the diploma, etc.). A certified copy is a copy of the document on which it is stated that it is “a true copy of the original” with the stamp and signature of the competent authority (notary, town hall, municipal administration, etc.) ;
do not clearly mention compliance with the admissibility criteria specified above (certified copy of diploma, age, professional experience, etc.).

Applying for an ARES scholarship is completely free. ARES does not charge fees at any stage of the application nor selection process. You may inform us via e-mail at [email protected] of any problems with individuals or companies claiming to represent ARES and request any payment.

Which training courses are available?

Within the framework of the ARES 2022-2027 cooperation program, three types of training are offered through the international training scholarships:

Advanced bachelor’s and master’s degrees are inter-institutional training programmes organised in one academic year and at the end of which an academic degree is awarded.
Continuing education programs are more practical and of shorter duration (2 to 6 months). They deliver a certificate.

Indirect mission costs	Lump sum	This amount is given once per stay, upon arrival of the scholar.
Insurance costs		Directly paid by ARES.

How to Apply:

Applications for scholarships must be submitted in accordance with the application procedure and meet the eligibility criteria described below. The selection of scholarship holders is made by a selection panel for each training course after analysis of their administrative admissibility by ARES.

All applications received between the first and last day of the call will be treated equally. ARES encourages applications from women. For equal quality, women will be given preference.

Are you a national of a developing country? Do you already hold a master’s degree?

Do you have professional experience and are you looking to further develop your skills in a development-related topic?

Scholarships for masters and training courses offer you the chance to pursue a one-year specialised master’s degree programme or a 4-to-6-month advanced training course within a higher education institution of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Belgium.

For a request to be valid, the applicant must:

Be a citizen of a developing country. To be eligible, applicants must be residing and working in their country of origin when they apply;
Only nationals of the following countries may apply for grants from ARES: Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia (only for training courses in English), Haiti, Madagascar, Morocco, Niger, Peru, the Philippines, the DR Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, and Vietnam;
Be under the age of 40 for degree programs, and under 45 for training courses, at the time the training is scheduled to begin;
Have earned a diploma comparable to a graduate-level diploma from Belgian university studies. Nevertheless, for certain training courses, different requirements may be requested, which will be specified below;
Possess relevant professional experience in a developing country of at least two years after graduate studies, or of three years after their studies if the applicant has earned a post-grad degree from a university in an industrialized country;
Have good mastery of written and spoken French. For training courses held in another language, it is essential to have a proper level in the course’s language, both written and spoken. We shall insist that the applicant commit to learning French in order to take part in daily life in Belgium;
Apply for only one training course.

Scholarship Worth

Each year, ARES grants an average of 150 scholarships as part of the master’s program, and 70 grants for training courses, to citizens from countries in the global South.

International travel costs	Receipts must be provided	Economy-class travel on an IATA-approved airline, with a maximum of one round-trip ticket per academic year.
Living allowance	Flat rate	1150 €/month for a duration of 12 months.
Indirect mission fees	Flat rate	150 €. This amount is given once per stay, upon arrival of the grantee.
Arrival allowance, tuition and return fees	Flat rate	700 €. This amount is given once per stay, upon arrival of the grantee.
Registration fees		At the current rate for DGD grantees.
Insurance fees		Directly paid by ARES.
Travel costs that are part of inter-university training	Receipts must be provided	Reimbursed based on real costs incurred, with receipts provided.

Amounts for a training course grant

AMOUNTS APPLICABLE TO GRANT CONTRACTS CONCLUDED AFTER 1 SEPTEMBER 2018:

International travel costs	Receipts must be provided	Economy-class travel on an IATA-approved airline, one round-trip ticket.
Living allowance	Flat rate	83 €/day for stays lasting 8 to 17 days 1400 €/month for stays lasting 18 days to 1 month (set amount) 1400 €/month for stays lasting 1 to 6 months, prorated to the number of days
Indirect mission fees	Flat rate	150 €. This amount is given once per stay, upon arrival of the grantee.
Insurance fees		Directly paid by ARES.
Travel expenses in the framework of inter university trainings	Receipts must be provided	Reimbursed based on the real incurred, with receipts provided.

Application Procedure

Applying for an ARES grant is totally free. ARES does not charge fees at any stage of the application or selection process. You may inform us via e-mail at [email protected] of any problems with individuals or companies who claim to represent ARES and request any payment.

How do I submit a grant application?

Please note that the application procedure is now online via the GIRAF platform.

First, you need to create a GIRAF account by clicking here. Your account will be validated (within a few hours to a few days) and you will receive a confirmation mail.
Once your account has been validated, you can access the application form via the Competitive calls tab of your GIRAF profile. Please note that you only have to click once on the “Start an application for masters and training programmes” button in GIRAF. You will then find your application form in the My tasks table of the Competitive calls
You can complete your form in several times, as long as you use the “Save and edit later” option. You will find your form each time in the My Tasks table of the Competitive calls tab in GIRAF.
As soon as you click on “Submit my application”, your file is transmitted to ARES and you can no longer modify it. You can still consult it in the My Submitted Files

Application Deadline

Applications must be submitted via GIRAF by 5 February 2021 at the latest.
Please note that applications for the following internships must be submitted via GIRAF by 15 January 2021 at the latest:
- Stage en système d’information géographie
- Stage en contrôle et assurance qualité des médicaments et produits de santé
- Stage en initiation à la recherche pour le renforcement des systèmes de santé

Application files will not be considered if they (are):

incomplete;
sent in by post, e-mail or fax. The procedure now takes place entirely online via GIRAF;
submitted via GIRAF outside of the application period;
are not completed in the language in which the training course is given;
do not follow one of the admissibility criteria that are clearly stated on the form (certified copy of diploma, age, professional experience, etc.).
