Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship Programme 2024 for young South Africans

Applications are now open for the Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship Programme. The Fellowship Programme looks for young achievers transitioning into university – people who want to make a big impact not just in their lives, but also in their community, city and country. The Fellowship recipients receive needs-based funding for university and access to support and development aimed at cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset.

Aim of the Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship

  • Choosing Entrepreneurship As A Viable Career Path

The Fellowship Programme focuses on cultivating entrepreneurship in Candidate Fellows by ensuring that by the end of the Fellowship Programme, they desire to create value through responsible entrepreneurship, see entrepreneurship as a viable career path, are able to take an idea and develop it into a viable opportunity, understand the value proposition of the Foundation and E2, and value the culture of community and collaboration. Furthermore, their entrepreneurial mindset development curriculum is disseminated via the AGOF Online Campus.

  • Deepening The Understanding Of Entrepreneurship

In addition to financial and academic support, each candidate is allocated a Personal Development Officer to help them get to grips with the transition into a new environment; an Entrepreneurial Leadership Officer, who probes them to flex their entrepreneurial muscles; as well as an industry mentor, who deepens their understanding of entrepreneurial traits and concepts in the working world.

Fellowship Application For Gr.12 Learners Requirements And Process

Requirements

  • A Minimum of 60% in Pure Mathematics OR a minimum of 80% in Mathematical Literacy for final grade 11 results
  • A Minimum average of 70% for final Grade 11 results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • The Applicant must be under the age of 21 in the year of their application
  • The Applicant must be a South African citizen
  • An Intention to study towards a Commerce, Science, Engineering, Law, Humanities, Arts & Health Science (Excluding Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry) degree at WITS, UJ, UCT, NMU, RU, UWC, SU, UP, UFS, UKZN or TSiBA

Process

  • Submit your application form and supporting documentation online or via post before or on 30 April 2024, 17:00 SAST
  • Successful applicant candidates will be invited for an interview in July 2024
  • Successful interview candidates will be invited to a selection camp in September 2024
  • To ensure that we offer you the best possible support and customer service, please ensure that you give yourself enough time to complete the application form before the closing date. We recommend dedicating at least 2 days to it

First-Year University Campaign

The 2024 first-year university campaign is closed for public applications. Each university will have the opportunity to nominate entrepreneurially minded first-year students who meet the Foundation’s first requirements listed below to apply.

  • Must currently be in their 1st year of study (expanded degree programmes welcome)
  • Must have an academic average of 65% after the first semester of 2023
  • Turning no older than 22 years in 2024

Currently Studying Toward A Degree In The Following Faculties:

  • Arts
  • Humanities
  • Law
  • Science
  • Commerce
  • Engineering
  • Health Science(excl. Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Sciences)

Benefits

  • Applicants with a combined annual household income of R1 million (R1 000 000.00) and below will receive full funding
  • Applicants with a combined annual household income of above R1 million (R1 000 000.00) will receive needs-based funding

Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship Programme 2020 for young South Africans (Grade 6 Students)

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation offers quality education from one of South Africa’s top achieving partner high schools to students who are in financial need, have a curious entrepreneurial mindset, and have the potential to excel academically.

Scholarship Application Requirements & Process

Applicant must be a current grade 6 learner in year of application
Applicant must be a South African citizen
Candidates must not be older than 12 years of age and not younger than 11 years of age in grade 6
Applicant must demonstrate financial need
Applicant must obtain a minimum of 70 % for English and Mathematics
Applicant must obtain a minimum of 70% average for remaining subjects
Submit hard copy of your application form and supporting documentation or apply online
Successful applicant will be required to write the Foundation exam in Mathematics and English for Grade 6
After the Foundation exam, successful candidates will be invited for interviews
Recommended candidates will be invited to the placement schools for interviews.
Candidates whose recommendations are approved by the placement schools will be awarded the Scholarship
Once the Scholarship is awarded, the Foundation, placement school and the Scholar’s custodian sign a Memorandum of Agreement

Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship Programme 2020 for young South Africans (Grade 12 Students)

The aim of the Fellowship Programme is to develop Southern Africa’s future, high-impact responsible entrepreneurs.

This programme is intended to help university students prepare for life as a high-impact, responsible entrepreneur. Applicants must be in Grade 12 or 1st year university and have a 70% overall academic average. Once applicants are successful, they are onboarded as a Candidate Allan Gray Fellow.

University Fellowships to develop Southern Africa’s future responsible entrepreneurs

The Foundation offers the exceptional Allan Gray Fellowship to Southern Africa’s pioneering bright young students. This initiative aims to develop students, known as Allan Gray Candidate Fellows, into Southern Africa’s future high impact responsible entrepreneurs.

Every year, the Foundation selects the best and most ambitious Grade 12 and first year university students from Southern Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland to join its vibrant community of Allan Gray Candidate Fellows. The Fellowship includes comprehensive tertiary education financial support alongside exposure to thought leaders, mentorship and entrepreneurial mindset development. Access to postgraduate funding is available to those who have excelled in their tertiary studies and the Fellowship Programme.

South Africa Grade 12

  • Citizens of South Africa
  • Belief in the future of your country
  • An ambassador of the Foundation’s intended profile (refer to General Selection Criteria above)

General Selection Criteria

Fellowship Applicants need to be able to show a track record of leadership or being entrepreneurially minded. The Foundation’s framework to measure this as follows:

  • Intellectual Imagination: Demonstrated by an established record of intellectual achievement; an ability to see the unseen, challenge the status quo and suggest that things could be done differently.
  • Courageous Commitment: The courage and dedication to continue, realising that applying consistent commitment has a way of overcoming.
  • Spirit of Significance: A weight of personality that comes from living a life personified by passion and integrity.
  • Personal Initiative: A person who makes things happen and celebrates the satisfaction of bringing new things into being. Independent, proactive and self-starting

How to Apply:

  • Interested applicants can apply for the Fellowship opportunity during their Grade 12 school year or during their first year of university.
  • The Fellowship application is open to learners and students from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.
  • The Fellowship selection team aims to correctly select talented individuals from the Southern African region so that the Fellowship is awarded to individuals that are most able to leverage this opportunity.
  • The Fellowship selection team specifically focuses on attracting eligible applicants using effective assessment tools and rigorous and reliable processes to make sure that eligible candidates are fairly assessed and that the correct decisions are made.
