The AWARD Leadership Program 2023 for Emerging African Women in Science

African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) is announcing the Call for The AWARD Leadership Program for Emerging African Women in Science. This Call targets young women in science under 35 years of age and is open to all countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

The inaugural Cohort of the AWARD Leadership Program for Emerging African Women in Science, piloted in 2021, comprised 24 women from 10 African countries. The AWARD Leadership Program is excited to invite applications for a second Cohort of young women in science who will participate in an enhanced customised leadership program.

Participants will get a deeper understanding of:
•Effective leadership styles and developing their leadership potential
•How to define their career path and leverage networks to advance their careers
•How to develop personal brands to build confidence in pitching their research ideas to potential funding agencies and collaborators
•The necessary tools and skills to successfully manage teams, navigate organizational dynamics, build alliances, and take risks
•How to navigate around gender dynamics and apply proven strategies to be effective negotiators and problem solvers

Benefits

  • The six-month virtual collaborative leadership program is uniquely designed to equip participants with the skills and confidence to lead and innovate. Participants will attend immersive training sessions on various topics, including leadership and management, communication and gender-responsive research. The program is further designed to foster peer learning through group coaching, enabling participants to leverage peers’ wisdom and experience to respond to leadership challenges better.
  • The Leadership Program will also expose participants to innovative tools for developing career roadmaps and navigating complex environments, expanding their networks while prioritizing their participation in various learning forums offered by AWARD and its partners.
  • Participants will receive a certificate of completion upon successfully attending and completing all training sessions

Eligibility Requirements

•The program is available to high-potential female applicants below the age of 35 years working in science, and with at least five years full-time sector experience
•Education qualification: Applicants must have a minimum of a B.Sc. degree from a recognized university
•Applicants must demonstrate their commitment to growth, clearly articulate their career goals and demonstrate their ability to take on leadership responsibility
•Only applicants from sub-Saharan African countries are eligible to apply
•Language: The language of instruction and delivery is English, and participants must have a working knowledge of the English language. Language support is not available for this program
•Applicants must submit their application not later than June 16, 2023 23 59hrs EAT
•Applications must be submitted only through the online link provided on our website
•Successful participants will be notified by July 2023

AWARD Fellowship 2017 for women scientists from Francophone Africa

African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) is working toward inclusive, agriculture-driven prosperity for the African continent by strengthening the production and dissemination of more gender-responsive agricultural research and innovation. We invest in African scientists, research institutions, and agribusinesses so that they can deliver agricultural innovations that better respond to the needs and priorities of a diversity of women and men across Africa’s agricultural value chains.

The AWARD Fellowship is a career-development program that since 2008 has, through tailored fellowships, equipped top women agricultural scientists across sub-Saharan Africa to accelerate agricultural gains by strengthening their science and leadership skills. The fellowship is a catalyst for innovations with high potential to contribute to the prosperity and wellbeing of African smallholder farmers

AWARD Fellows benefit from a two-year fellowship focused on fostering mentoring partnerships, building science skills, and developing leadership capacity. Following a highly competitive process, the fellowships are awarded on the basis of intellectual merit and leadership capacity.

Eligibility

  • Women agricultural scientists who are citizens of the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, and Togo.
  • Education: Completed bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.
  • Discipline: All domains in agriculture and food are eligible.

Priority will be given to scientists working on research to benefit the sorghum and millet value chains, seed systems, and agroecological transitions.

During the two-year fellowship, AWARD Fellows remain in their institutions, continue their research, and travel to attend AWARD training courses held in various locations across Africa. The AWARD Fellowship package includes:

Fostering Mentoring Partnerships

  • One-to-one monthly mentoring by a senior scientist or professional for each AWARD Fellow

Developing Leadership Capacity

  • Participation in the internationally recognized AWARD Women’s Leadership and Management Course or the AWARD Leadership Skills Course
  • Support to host a community role-modeling event

Building Science Skills

  • Participation in AWARD Science Skills Courses, with an option of science or proposal writing
  • Opportunities to compete for advanced science training at leading international universities and institutions

2017 AWARD AgTech Innovation Challenge for Southern and Central Africa.

The efficiency of African agriculture is hampered by a persistent gender gap. Gender in Agribusiness Investments for Africa (GAIA) ensures visibility, commercialization, and scaling up of agricultural research innovations (AgTech) with the potential to bridge the gender gap in African agriculture by focusing on agribusinesses that demonstrate clear benefits to groups that are often marginalized in agriculture including women smallholder farmers and other women value chain actors.

We are pleased to announce that GAIA is now accepting applications from institutions and enterprises for the 2017 AWARD AgTech Innovation Challenge for Southern and Central Africa. GAIA has been launched by African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) to increase agribusiness investments in technological and business model innovations that help bridge the gender gap in African agriculture and particularly those that enhance the positive participation of African women in agricultural value chains across the continent.

Central Africa: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Madagascar
Southern Africa: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Sao Tome & Principe, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Eligibility

AWARD GAIA is looking for enterprises that:

  • Serve the agriculture or allied sectors;
  • Demonstrate clear benefits to groups that are often marginalized in agriculture including women smallholder farmers and other women value chain actors;
  • Have an innovative technology or business model;
  • Have a clear for-profit business model with high potential for scale;
  • Have some proof of concept on the ground, conducted pilots and are preferably generating revenues;
  • Are seeking funding to commercialize or scale.
The top 25 companies will participate in an in-depth boot camp, and then be showcased to investors, incubators, and other support organizations in Lusaka, Zambia from April 10-12, 2017. The goal of this challenge is to increase agribusiness investments in technological and business model innovations that have the potential to help close the gender gap in African agriculture.
