Entrepreneurs identify needs in the world around them and take action to alleviate those needs. They start businesses, health clinics, youth organizations, and social movements. They bring new products and ideas to the world. Their efforts create value and improve lives. We encourage you to celebrate your entrepreneurial spirit and share your entrepreneurial ideas with us.

Passion for Africa

Do you have an African dream? Are you excited by the idea of spending two years in a community of individuals from a wide range of cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds from across the continent?

Academic Achievement

To succeed in the rigorous and challenging ALA curriculum, students must have demonstrated mastery of the subject matter taught at the school they attended before entering the Academy. Fees & Financial Assistance

ALA is one of the most prestigious education institutions in the world, with a unique financial model designed to enable us to identify, develop and connect Africa’s future leaders. Everyone who applies and is then admitted to ALA, regardless of financial background or nationality, is eligible to receive significant financial assistance* in the form of scholarships and loans towards studying at ALA and accessing membership to our lifelong network. The cost of tuition at ALA is USD $30,900 per year.

Since inception, ALA and ALU donors have contributed nearly $50 Million.

The all-inclusive cost of $30,900 per annum to attend ALA includes:

  • All-inclusive for fees for a full year covering tuition, accommodation, sports, activities, meals and uniforms.
  • Full access to ALA’s campus facilities including entertainment areas, sports fields, high-speed fibre internet, biometric security control.
  • There is proactive health and wellness care, including private medical insurance for every student.
  • The Explore Johannesburg program, which gets students out and about in our world-class African city, attending cultural and entertainment events.
  • Access to our exclusive and globally renowned University Guidance and “next steps” team, who will advise ALA families on tertiary study, gap year and other options.
  • Exclusive access to the Africa Careers Network, a team at ALA dedicated to finding and securing employment for ALA graduates across the continent with top employers.

All financial assistance awards are determined after an in-depth financial needs assessment, and require the commitment to the Social Contract. If a student breaks their commitment to the social contract, their scholarship will convert into an interest bearing loan, such that they create an ALA experience for another future African leader.

Selection Process

First Round

ALA’s selection process is extremely competitive. The Academy receives several thousand applications from a diverse array of African countries each year. These applicants come from a wide range of social, economic, cultural & educational backgrounds. The application includes short questions and essays and must be submitted with academic transcripts. Please check the admissions timeline below to confirm the appropriate application deadline for you.

Finalist Interviews

At this stage approximately 400 finalists are selected to attend finalist events held across the continent. At these events, finalists write entrance exams, participate in group activities & are interviewed one-on-one by the ALA Admissions team. Finalists are also required to submit teacher recommendations.

Selection

The hardest part of the selection process: the Academy is only able to select 120 students from the pool of extraordinary finalists to attend the Academy. All finalists will be notified of their admissions status by mid- April.

Timeline:

June 1st 2020 : Applications open!
August 31st 2020 : First application deadline (Early Decision 1)
October 31st 2020: Second application deadline (Early Decision 2)
September – October 2020: Rolling reviews and Early Decision 1 finalist interviews. Applicants will receive final decisions by October 31st, 2020
November 1st, 2020 – December 18th, 2020: Regular Decision Applications
November 2020 – December 2020 Rolling reviews and Early Decision 2 finalist interviews. Applicants will receive final decisions latest January 15th, 2021

African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks to transform Africa by developing a powerful network of over 6,000 leaderswho will work together to address Africa’s greatest challenges, achieve extraordinary social impact, and accelerate the continent’s growth trajectory.

The academic program at ALA combines an international faculty and unique instructional methods to create a strong student-centered learning experience. Our core courses of Entrepreneurial Leadership, African Studies and Writing and Rhetoric empower young leaders with the knowledge and skills required for complex problem-solving; in addition, students may select from a set of externally and internally designed courses in the Humanities,Sciences, Languages and Creative Arts. Externally designed programs include a variety of Cambridge Advanced International Examination (CAIE) AS and A-Level courses.

SAT Tutoring:

Students at the Academy have access to a tutoring program at the Academy in preparation for the SAT exams, which are also written at ALA three times each year.

University Guidance:

The ALA campus located on the outskirts of Johannesburg provides a tranquil environment ideal for learning and discovery. The campus is designed around a quad, with dormitories, classrooms, dining hall, auditorium and our science laboratories radiating from that center.

African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks to transform Africa by developing a powerful network of over 6,000 leaders who will work together to address Africa’s greatest challenges, achieve extraordinary social impact and accelerate the continent’s growth. ALA identifies young leaders between the ages of 16-19 from across the continent with demonstrated leadership potential, a passion for Africa, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a track record of community service.
These young leaders are then brought together for a two-year pre-university program at our
world-class boarding institution in Johannesburg, South Africa. ALA continues to cultivate these leaders throughout their lives, in university and beyond, by providing on-going leadership training, supporting their growth through access to internships and careers, and connecting them to high-impact networks of people and capital that will empower them to create transformative change.
The Academy admits 125 young leaders from across Africa each year for the two-year pre-university program, anchored on Entrepreneurial Leadership, African Studies, and Writing & Rhetoric. Students also take Cambridge A’level subjects as electives, alongside specialized research classes in the Sciences, Humanities and Creative Arts.
The Academy is a boarding school; all students are accommodated and catered for at the Academy’s campus in Honeydew, Johannesburg, South Africa for the duration of their studies.
REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
  • ALA searches for young leaders across the continent between the ages of 16 and 19. Please note that ALA’s admissions team does not expect an applicant to be extraordinary in all five criteria; ALA seek students with a variety of interests, strengths, and backgrounds.

African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks to transform Africa by identifying, developing, and connecting thousands of leaders for the continent over the next few decades. The Academy is founded on the philosophy that a new generation of ethical, committed leaders is the key to Africa’s development. ALA seeks to become training ground for these future leaders.

Each year, ALA draws the most outstanding students from across Africa to its campus in South Africa. Here, they build a powerful intellectual foundation and develop their leadership capacity through ALA’s unique curriculum in Entrepreneurial Leadership. ALA then works with these young leaders throughout their lives as they enable lasting positive change on the African continent.

ALA Fellowships Role

  • ALA Fellowships are two-year posts for young professionals who have completed their undergraduate studies within the past five years.
  • ALA Fellows work closely with talented and passionate students from across the African continent through teaching and/or professional staff supporting roles.
  • Teaching Fellows collaborate with exceptional educators and mentors, teaching courses in areas of expertise and gaining broad practical experience in  teaching and learning.
  • Staff Fellows assist in areas such as strategic relations or admissions, developing skills in project management.
  • All Fellows participate actively in student life as resident advisors and coaches overseeing extracurricular activities, bringing energy and cultivating a vibrant culture of leadership, innovation, and international cooperation on campus.

Expected Responsibilities

  • Teach courses and/or lead projects directly serving the mission of ALA.
  • Actively contribute to holistic student life at ALA by leading extracurricular student groups such as sports teams, clubs, or other activities.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of 6-8 students and tutor on duty in the dormitory one evening per week.
  • Participate in diverse professional development programs to support the overall mission of the Academy

  • Experience working with young people in a mentoring, teaching, or coaching capacity.
  • Experience developing strong relationships with people from a variety of different ages, cultures, religions, and socioeconomic groups.
  • Experience in a boarding school or as a university Residential Advisor is a plus.
  • Fluent in English. Fluency or proficiency in other languages spoken broadly on the continent (French, Portuguese, Arabic, Swahili, Yoruba, etc.) is a plus.

Benefits:

  • Fellows receive housing, a stipend to cover living expenses, and are eligible for a grant to enable one professionally relevant travel excursion during the course of the Fellowship.
  • Fellows are also eligible for a modest Summer Exploration grant to enable one professionally relevant travel excursion during the course of Fellowship tenure.

Start Date

  • Fellowships will begin in August 2017 and last for two years. Fellows will receive housing on campus and a stipend payment to cover living expenses.

African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks to transform Africa by developing a powerful network of over 6,000 leaders who will work together to address Africa’s greatest challenges, achieve extraordinary social impact and accelerate the continent’s growth. ALA identifies young leaders between the ages of 16-19 from across the continent with demonstrated leadership potential, a passion for Africa, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a track record of community service.

These young leaders are then brought together for a two-year pre-university program at our world-class boarding institution in Johannesburg, South Africa. Program Overview

  • The Academy admits between 100 and 125 young leaders from across Africa each year for the two-year pre-university program, anchored on Entrepreneurial Leadership, African Studies, and Writing & Rhetoric.
  • Students also take Cambridge A’level subjects as electives, alongside specialized research classes in the Sciences, Humanities and Creative Arts.
  • The Academy is a boarding school; all students are accommodated and catered for at the Academy’s campus in Honeydew, Johannesburg, South Africa for the duration of their studies.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND TIMELINE

  • Applications to the Academy typically open in August and close in December each year. The admissions process starts with the completion of an application either online or by emailing the completed form to [email protected] along with the submission of school reports.
  • The ALA admissions team then reviews the applications received and shortlists selected applicants for finalist activities or phone interviews (we are unable to travel to every country).
  • Phone interviews in no way disadvantage an applicant’s chances for entrance into ALA. At the finalist activities, prospective students will participate in group exercises, write an entrance examination, and submit recommendation letters from their former teachers. After the finalist activities, a final evaluation is done by our admissions team and then a final selection is made.

The admission cycle for the Class of 2017 will be as follows:

  • August 16, 2016 : Applications open
  • October 31, 2016 : Early decision applications close
  • December 2016 : Early decision finalist activities
  • January 6, 2017 : Regular decision applications close
  • January 8, 2017 : Notification of final early decision selections

2015 African Leadership Academy Model African Union (ALAMAU), Johannesburg South Africa

Whom: Participation at ALAMAU 2015 is open to high school students aged 15-19 from all regions of Africa and around the world.

African Leadership Academy Model African Union (ALAMAU) is a simulation of the African Union (AU), providing a platform for young leaders from around Africa and across the world to explore the inner workings of the AU, and to practice international diplomacy by assuming the roles of African leaders.
This conference affords delegates the opportunity to study complex African issues, understand the political, economic and social interests of African countries, engage in public speaking and learn to successfully negotiate without compromising national interests. ALAMAU aims to empower young leaders to model international cooperation while celebrating diversity and promoting pan-African unity.
ALAMAU 2015 will be held from March 18-22, 2015 as young leaders attempt to resolve, in five days of intense brainstorming and negotiations, some of the longest-running and most complicated issues on the continent.

ACTIVITIES AT ALAMAU 2015
Committee Sessions
At ALAMAU 2015, seven organs and subsidiary bodies of the African Union will be simulated. Each
committee session will last for three hours and will mainly include speeches and caucus negotiations, ultimately culminating in a resolution drafted to solve the issue for which the committee was convened
Diplomatic Reception & Roundtable
Delegates to ALAMAU 2015 will be drawn from several countries within and outside Africa; therefore as part of their diplomatic experience at ALAMAU, they will be afforded the opportunity to interact with and
learn from several African ambassadors in a cocktail reception.
Faculty Advisor Speaker Series
Each delegation to ALAMAU 2015 will be accompanied by a faculty member, who might be a teacher in the humanities or one who maintains significant interest in international affairs
Educational Tours
South Africa is home to several historic and educational sites including the Apartheid Museum and Cradle of Humankind.
Cultural Night
Considering the diversity of nationalities and cultures that will be represented at ALAMAU, delegated will be engaged in a celebration of all represented cultures at the Africa-themed Cultural Night. Participants will witness a fusion of music, food, fashion, dance, drama and poetry that highlight the uniqueness of different cultures from all regions of Africa
HOW TO PARTICIPATE AT ALAMAU 2015
  • Participation at ALAMAU 2015 is open to high school students aged 15-19 from all regions of Africa and around the world.
  • Schools can register single delegations of five students and one teacher, or double delegations of ten students and two teachers. Recent high school graduates between the ages of 15-19 (who are not currently in university) can also register as independent delegates.
  • All intending applicants should register online at http://www.alamau.org/apply-now/.
  • Received applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and accepted delegates will receive confirmation emails.
  • Confirmed participants will be given country and committee assignments in due course
