IWMF May 2018 Reporting Fellowships to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Fully Funded)

The IWMF is pleased to announce reporting trips to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in May 2018. The IWMF will select two groups of women journalists to travel to Kigali and Kinshasa and will focus on Agriculture and Climate Change and Civic Engagement, respectively. This opportunity is part of the African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative. Work from previous IWMF Great Lakes Fellows has been published and aired by leading media outlets around the world. The IWMF will continue to lead reporting trips to the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda through 2018.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Affiliated or freelance women journalists with three (3) or more years of professional experience working in news media. Internships do not count toward professional experience.
  • Non-native English speakers must have professional written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
  • Applicants must be able to show proof of interest from an editor or have a proven track record of publications in prominent media outlets

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS AND EXPENSES:

  • The IWMF arranges travel and in-country logistics for all Fellows within the scope of the Fellowship base location and trip dates.
  • The IWMF also covers Fellowship-related costs within the framework of the reporting trip including travel, lodging, meals, and fixers/interpreters, unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.
  • Visa costs will also be covered.
  • Fellows living outside the U.S. are responsible for procuring all necessary visas, for which they will be reimbursed at the conclusion of the Fellowship.

THE REPORTING TRIPS:

  • The trip will take place from May 2nd until May 18th, which includes travel dates. All fellows will begin their trip in Nairobi, Kenya, where they will complete a comprehensive security training and an orientation about the Great Lakes Region and the reporting trip locations from May 3 to 6.
  • Fellows will depart for 10 days of in-country reporting on May 7, and begin reporting from May 8 to May 17, and will have the opportunity to network with in-country journalists, collaborate with international peers, and access a wide range of sources and sites relevant to their reporting.
  • The IWMF reserves the right to change reporting locations based on the real-time security situations in both locations.
  • The feasibility of day trips outside the base locations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and determined by IWMF security protocols.

IWMF’s March 2018 South Sudan and Uganda Reporting Fellowship for women Journalist (Fully Funded)

REPORTING TRIP DATES: March 14 – March 31, 2018

The IWMF is pleased to announce a cross-border team reporting trip to South Sudan and Uganda in March 2018. The IWMF will select teams of women journalists to travel to Juba and Gulu for a cross-border reporting trip focused on regional migration.

This opportunity is part of the African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative. The work of the previous IWMF Great Lakes Fellows has been published and aired by leading media outlets around the world. The IWMF will continue to lead reporting trips to the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda through 2018.

The trip will take place March 14 – March 31, 2018, which includes travel dates. All Fellows will begin their trip in Nairobi, where they will complete a comprehensive security training and an orientation about the Great Lakes Region and the reporting trip locations from March 15 to 18, 2018. Fellows will depart for ten days of in country reporting that will be split between Uganda and South Sudan. The group will have access to five days of in-country reporting (March 19 to 24) from the first country, followed by five days of in-country reporting in the second location (March 25 to 30). The IWMF will determine the order of the South Sudan and Uganda trips based on story plans of fellows selected. Fellows will have the opportunity to network with in-country journalists, collaborate with international peers, and access a wide range of sources and sites relevant to their reporting.

The IWMF reserves the right to change reporting locations based on the real-time security situation in both locations. The feasibility of day trips outside the base locations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and determined by IWMF security protocols.

TEAM APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

The IWMF’s March 2018 South Sudan and Uganda Reporting Fellowship is open to teams of two (2) women journalists. Both applicants must meet the eligibility criteria and submit a joint application. If selected, teams will be offered group interviews. Individuals cannot apply for this reporting fellowship. The IWMF encourages team applications that include journalists from Africa.

International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) 2017 Reporting Fellowship to Zanzibar, Tanzania (Funded)

The IWMF is now accepting applications for a Reporting Fellowship to Tanzania, to take place in August 2017. As part of the African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, a group of six journalists will report from Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous island off the east coast of mainland Tanzania, covering stories related to the trip theme of civic engagement.

Applicants are asked to pitch stories relevant to the trip location and theme; stories must focus on in-depth and new narratives and be notably different from those reported on previous Fellowships. We will prioritize applications with creative, thoughtful, and original pitches.

FELLOWSHIP DATES:

August 6-19, 2017

ABOUT THE REPORTING TRIP TO TANZANIA:

Fellows will begin their trip in Nairobi, Kenya, where they will complete an orientation and Hostile Environments and First Aid Training (HEFAT) August 6-9. They then depart for eight days of in-country work August 10-19 in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Fellows will have the opportunity to network with other journalists, report independently and collaboratively with their peers, and gain access to a variety of sources and sites related to their reporting.

  • Women journalists of all nationalities are welcome to apply.
  • Non-native English speakers must be proficient in English in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
  • Applicants must be able to show proof of interest from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets (a letter from an editor is strongly preferred).

IWMF African Great Lakes (Tanzania and Rwanda) Reporting Fellowships 2017 for Journalists

The IWMF is now accepting applications for two Reporting Fellowships, set to take place in February 2017. As part of the African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, one group of six journalists will report on rural and economic development from Mwanza, northern Tanzania. Concurrently, a second group of six journalists will cover civic engagement in Kigali, Rwanda.

The coverage of new and under-reported narratives is a cornerstone of the Great Lakes program. To date, 75 journalists from 16 countries have pursued a wide range of stories that go beyond the well-established beats of political instability, armed conflicts, and humanitarian crisis in the region. Their work has been aired and published by leading media outlets around the world.

Between 2015-2018, the IWMF will continue to lead groups of women journalists to the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. By 2019, more than 250 reporters will have together reshaped traditional media narratives about the region.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Affiliated or freelance women journalists with three (3) or more years of professional experience working in news media. Internships do not count toward professional experience.
  • Women journalists of all nationalities are welcome to apply.

The International Women’s Media Foundation is pleased to announce its first ever cross-border reporting trip to Rwanda/DRC and second reporting trip to Uganda.

Ten women journalists will report on conservation and sustainable agriculture in Rwanda/DRC from January 26 – February 12, 2016.

Concurrently, a group of six journalists will cover themes of democracy and governance in Uganda from January 26 – February 8, 2016.

These opportunities are part of the African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, created in 2014 and designed to support women journalists interested in pursuing stories that go beyond the well-established narratives of political instability, armed conflicts, and humanitarian crisis in the region.

Over the next four years, the IWMF will continue to lead groups of women journalists to the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. By 2019, more than 250 reporters will have together reshaped traditional media narratives about this complicated region full of promise.

All Fellows will begin their trip in Nairobi, Kenya, where they will complete comprehensive security training and an orientation about the African Great Lakes region and focus countries. Fellows then depart for about one week of in-country independent reporting from Rwanda/DRC or Uganda, where they will have the opportunity to network with local journalists, collaborate with international peers, and meet with sources and discover sites relevant to their reporting.

  • Applicant must be a woman journalist.
  • Applicant must have at least 3 years professional experience in journalism. Journalists working in print, broadcast, or digital media, including freelancers, are eligible.
  • Non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
  • Applicant must be able to demonstrate support from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.

  • Applicant may not submit one application for multiple countries or trips. She must submit a complete application and story plan for each country for which she wants to apply.
  • Applications include basic details, a statement of interest including a researched story pitch, CV, work samples, and either a letter of support from an editor or a proven track record of publication.
  • All applications materials must be submitted in English.

International Women’s Media Foundation International Reporting Fellowships for Women Journalists (Fully Funded)

Worth: The IWMF pays for fellowship-related expenses including travel, lodging, meals and fixers/interpreters unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.

The International Women’s Media Foundation is now accepting applications from women journalists to participate in one of two international reporting fellowships, both tentatively scheduled to take place February 13-23, 2015.

As part of its African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, the IWMF will lead delegations of six journalists each to Rwanda and Uganda to cover underreported economic and rural development issues.

The first three days of the fellowship will consist of comprehensive security training and briefings by regional experts. Participating journalists will participate in one week of in-country independent reporting as well as group activities, and will have the opportunity to interact with key multi-sector stakeholders as well as local journalists.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

– Applicant must be a women journalist

– Must have at least 3 years professional experience in journalism. Journalists working in print, broadcast, or digital media, including freelancers, are eligible.

– Non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
