CDT-Africa Clinical Trials fellowship 2018 – Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Funded)

The Centre for Innovative Drug Development and Therapeutic Trials for Africa (CDT-Africa) is a World Bank supported centre of excellence for education and research at the College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The main aim of CDT-Africa is to
serve as a platform for equitable access to interventions (medications, vaccines, diagnostics and complex interventions) and bring about sustainable development in Africa through high-
quality capacity development for innovative therapeutic discovery.
As part of its commitment to support regional capacity for therapeutic development, the Center has developed a Master’s program in Clinical Trials. This MSc program was developed after a needs assessment, which combines extensive need for the program, and following standard procedures. The Center’s MSc in Clinical Trials curriculum, the first of its kind in Ethiopia and the Region, is designed for the training of experts who are actively contributing to the clinical trials process in Africa.
The program’s overall aim is to prepare competent individuals who would work in pharmaceutical industries, regulatory agencies, contract research organizations, academia and other research centres, with the primary objective of assisting with the designing, execution and reporting of clinical trials pertaining to drugs, diagnostics, behavioural interventions and medical devices commensurate with Good Clinical Practice, legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements.
Eligibility
• A candidate must have a Bachelor Degree in healthcare or life sciences, such as pharmacy,
public health, nursing, biology, doctorate degree in medicine or equivalent, doctor of dental
medicine, and doctor of veterinary medicine. Those with Bachelor of Statistics are also eligible.
• Others with additional qualifications with or without Bachelor Degree in the life sciences
may be eligible if relevant further qualifications are obtained. Examples of such qualifications are public health, MSc in pharmacy, MSc in pharmacology, MSc in statistics, and doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).
• As this is a needs based program, it is desirable for applicants to have one or two years of service after last graduation with relevant program to have the exposure to real-life challenges prior to joining the program.
• A candidate who satisfies the above admission requirements will be required to take and
pass oral examination.
  • Applicants from government institutions may need to submit a sponsorship letter from their employing institution once they are shortlisted and succeeded the oral examination
• Applicants need to meet also the general requirements laid down by the School of Graduate
Studies, Addis Ababa University.
Fellowship
• The Center will pay for any required registration fee and tuition fee
• The Center will have a modest funding to support research projects of all students.
  • Any student coming from countries outside Ethiopia will have a dormitory within Addis Ababa University and a net stipend of 10, 000 Ethiopian birr.
  • Other national students are required to have sponsorship from their institutions

• The motivation letter should describe how the applicant meets the requirements for the
MSc study and why he/she wants to engage in the program.
• The deadline for applications is 22nd June 2018.
• Shortlisted national applicants will be interviewed at the CDT- Africa office in Addis Ababa,
while shortlisted international applicants will be interviewed remotely through Skype or other means.
• Female applicants are highly encouraged to apply.

Tana Forum Universities’ Essay Competition 2017 “Natural Resource Governance in Africa” (Fully Funded to Bahir Dar, Ethiopia)

Then, you should participate in the second edition of the ‘Tana Forum University Essay Competition’, organised by the Tana Forum Secretariat based at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

The Tana Forum 2017 theme, “Natural Resource Governance in Africa” is intended to stimulate a debate on the reasons why Africa’s security challenges are attracting substantial global attention whereas the continent’s own experience and articulation of its issues has yet to obtain commensurate global recognition, acceptance and significance. It is evident today – more than any time in the past – that Africa needs to rally a unified and amplified voice and agency if it is to assert its own interests in international security debates and agendas.  The 2017 Tana Forum Essay Competition forms part of this consultative debate that is envisioned to contribute to policy building and development.

Participating Universities

  • All African Universities.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants must be an African residing in an African country;
  2. Applicants must be Master’s or PhD students from the Social Science/Humanities/Political Science/ International Relations field in one of the under-listed universities.

Guidelines

  1. Entries must be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or an equivalent font with a one-inch margin on all sides of the page;
  2. Essays must be between 5-10 pages in length;
  3. Submissions must be the original work of applicants with a comprehensive list of sources consulted. Essays on other topics will not be accepted. Please use the topic as the title of your essay;
  4. Submissions should be either in English or French;
  5. A bibliography must be included. AT LEAST three of the sources you cite must be primary sources, i.e. books, periodicals or newspapers that you have researched. (A primary source is a document, speech, or other sort of evidence written, created or otherwise produced during the time under study. Primary sources offer an inside view of a particular event. They may be accessed online.) Other sources may be online, provided they are cited correctly as such. Any submissions lacking three primary sources will be disqualified.
  6.  Any essay using crowd-sourced and publicly editable sources such as Wikipedia will be disqualified! Please make sure to also separate your primary source list from your Internet source list.
  7. Essays MUST be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format and any essay. submitted in any other format will not be considered.
  8. Your essay will be disqualified if it does not meet the requirements or is submitted after the submission date of 11:59 pm EST on Tuesday 31 January, 2017.
  9. Applicants must be willing and fit to travel.

Benefits:

2014/2015 EASST Visiting Scholar Fellowship for East Africans.

The EASST Visiting Scholar Fellowship seeks to equip East African social scientists with the skills needed to carry out rigorous evaluations of economic development programs. During a four-month fellowship, researchers will be based at the University of California Berkeley. Fellows may visit either during the Fall semester (from August 20-December 20, 2014) or the Spring semester (from January 20-May 20, 2015).

The East Africa Social Science Translation (EASST) Collaborative invites African researchers to apply
for a 4- month fellowship (sabbatical) at the University of California Berkeley, to be completed during
the 2014-15 academic year.
Each Visiting Scholar will be paired with a faculty mentor affiliated with the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA), a research network based in the United States
 EASST is a university-based partnership led by researchers at Makerere University, Addis Ababa University, the Ethiopian Economics Association, the African Population and Health Research Center, the University of Dar es Salaam, and the National University of Rwanda. The network is administered by the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) at the University of California Berkeley. –
A list of CEGA faculty affiliates is available online at http://cega.berkeley.edu/faculty/. Additionally, CEGA staff and PhD students will provide support during the semester and once the scholar returns home.
Fellowship Worth:
The fellowship program will pay for:
  • Room and board in Berkeley,
  • Health insurance,
  • Monthly stipend,
  • Visa fees, and
  • Roundtrip air travel.
  • Small grants of up to $8,000 will be provided to scholars who return to their home institution, to hold trainings in impact evaluation, build institutional capacity, or to forge new linkages with government policymakers.
CEGA staff will provide mentorship not only throughout the semester, but also once the scholar returns home.
Upon completing the fellowship, scholars are expected to return to a university or research institute in East Africa and assume a leading role in the global effort to use rigorous evaluation and evidence for economic development.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates for all EASST programs must:

  • Be a resident of an East African country participating in EASST (i.e. Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda);
  • Have participated in field-based data collection and rigorous empirical techniques/analysis;
  • Have participated in or have familiarity with impact evaluation research (either randomized or quasi-experimental studies);
  • Hold a staff position at a research institution, university or other organization in East Africa, preferably one that supports policy-relevant, quantitative social science research;
  • Be computer literate, fluent in English, and a strong public speaker;
  • Have a PhD or Master’s degree (completed within the last 8 years) or be enrolled in a graduate program in economics, statistics, epidemiology/public health, or another social science discipline;
  • Plan to return to a research institute in East Africa for at least 1 year after the fellowship; and
  • Demonstrate a commitment to building the capacity of African research institutions/universities.
