Acumen East Africa Fellows Program 2024 for emerging Leaders in East Africa (Fully Funded)

Applications are now open for the 2024 Acumen East Africa Fellows Program. The East Africa Acumen Fellowship is a rigorous leadership program that brings together a cohort of extraordinary individuals working on problems of poverty and equips them with the knowledge, skills, and community to strengthen their leadership and scale their impact to create meaningful change in East Africa. 

After Fellow Candidates complete the program they join The Foundry, a community of like-minded peers who are working across sectors and geographies to build a world based on dignity. As part of this diverse community committed to sharing ideas and experiences, they gain access to capital, coaching, and continuous learning as part of lifelong accompaniment on their journey to creating social change. 

Eligibility Requirements

  • The Fellowship looks for “builders” who are working to solve problems of poverty.  Builders* include founders, CEOs, and senior leaders (COO, MD, etc.) at for-profit, nonprofit, or hybrid social enterprises as well as corporate or government sector intrapreneurs. While these titles offer a glimpse of the types of roles Fellows play, what matters most is what you’re building and the track record of your impact.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience and should be able to demonstrate their commitment to solving issues of poverty.
  • Applicants should demonstrate their ability and willingness to give (contributing their knowledge, experiences, networks, and/or ideas) and receive support from the Foundry.
  • Applicants must have a reliable internet connection, be fully available to participate throughout the entirety of the program, and be able to participate in English.  

*Women and builders serving Forcibly Displaced Persons (FDPs) and Crisis Affected Communities (CACs) are encouraged to apply.

Benefits

While the Fellowship is fully-funded for Fellow Candidates, Acument doesn’t provide any funding or additional benefits as part of the program.

Curriculum

Fellow Candidates remain in their jobs and participate in a 6-month program comprising 5 seminars.  The seminars are paired with online group and individual assignments designed to inspire an engaged community. The following provides a high-level overview:

  • One 3-day virtual immersive.
  • Two 5-day full-time in-person immersive (8 hours of pre-work for each immersive consisting of self-paced learning and group calls).
  • Two 4-week virtual workshops (3 hours a week of pre-work including group and individual calls as well as self-paced learning).

Application Process

  1. Submit the Online Application: February 4, 2024
  2. Participate in the Selection Conference: March 2024
  3. Start your Fellowship Journey: May, 2024

Each year, the Acumen East Africa Fellows Programme brings together 20 extraordinary individuals tackling poverty and injustice in their communities and equips them with the knowledge, skills, and community to strengthen their leadership, as well as the capacity of their ventures to scale and create meaningful change in East Africa.

The Fellowship begins with an intensive leadership programme. Fellows remain in their jobs while taking part in a series of multi-day virtual seminars, paired with online group and individual assignments between seminars, all connected by group practice. This is where practical skills meet moral imagination. The programme is designed to increase a Fellow’s capacity to lead social change and tackle problems of poverty and injustice.

After the first year, Fellows become part of Acumen’s global community of social innovators, who are committed to life-long learning, collaboration, and accompaniment as they drive change.

The next East Africa Fellowship runs from May 2023 to December 2023.

Fellows

  • Entrepreneurs: Leaders of both for-profit and nonprofit organizations providing critical goods or services to the underserved.
  • Intrapreneurs: Leaders who are bringing to life new initiatives or approaches within the organization. The focus is on designing, testing, incubating, and implementing ideas that enable the organization to pursue its purpose.
  • Organizational Builders: Leaders who play an integral role in building the organization. The focus is on building the internal blocks, systems, and processes that enable the organization to pursue its purpose.

Year 1

  • Join a diverse cohort of 20 leaders from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and Ethiopia
  • Acumen Fellows are drawn from diverse sectors, disciplines, organisations and social change journeys 
  • All programme costs covered by Acumen Academy East Africa 
  • Multiple virtual multi-day seminars and workshops, paired with individual and group online assignments between seminars 
  • Learning that is immediately applied to your life and work 
  • Peer coaching that challenges and accompanies you in your social change work 
  • Cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself and your work in a broader context 
  • Navigate uncertainty and embrace the meaningful process of creating change

Beyond Year 1

  • Join Acumen’s growing community of social innovators and builders accompanying each other from across the globe committed to a world beyond poverty and injustice
  • Opportunities to network, collaborate, as well as learn from and share experiences with other Acumen social innovators both locally and globally
  • After the first year of the Acumen Fellowship, fellows take part in a range of opportunities that are designed to both further their impact and build their communities

In the Fellowship Program You Will:

  • Learn to catalyse and embrace the gradual and meaningful process of creating change at the personal, organisational, and societal levels
  • Cultivate the ability to lead effectively when opposing but interdependent values are in tension
  • Understand how to lead diverse stakeholders through recurring and complex challenges
  • Develop the capacity to tell meaningful stories that speak across lines of difference and move others to action
  • Examine your identities, values, and choices that have shaped your journey till now and cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself and your work in a broader context
  • Explore the meaning of a just society and the moral and historical foundation of social change through text-based dialogue
  • Navigate systemic problems and design more effective interventions using moral imagination
  • Question your assumptions and beliefs about leading effective change
  • Be supported and accompanied by a cohort of like-minded peers persevering in the process of driving social change

Our curriculum draws on powerful leadership frameworks, tools, and approaches, including Adaptive Leadership, Authentic Voice, Good Society Readings, Immunity to Change, and Polarities Management.

How to Apply

Our application process consists of these five stages.

  1. Stage 1: An online application form designed to understand why this is the right time for you to become an Acumen Fellow.
  2. Stage 2: An opportunity to dig deeper into the work you do through an application form & short essay questions.
  3. Stage 3: Final selection for the finalists. The Selection Conference day includes elevator pitches, group activities, and a panel interview.
  4. Stage 4: The 2022 cohort will be selected in November and 2022 Fellows announced in December 2021.

The Fellowship begins with an intensive leadership programme, where Fellows remain in their jobs while taking part in a series of multi-day virtual seminars, paired with online group and individual assignments between seminars, all connected by group practice. The Fellows are individuals who dare to do what’s right, not what’s easy, to create positive change in their region. Fellows can come from diverse cultural, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds and work in any sector, and they must be committed to ending poverty and injustice in their community through their work. They are individuals who are making a long-term play at system-level impact and are seeking the leadership skills and moral imagination to make it happen.

Year 1

The Fellows we seek are:

  • Typically in one of the following trajectories: entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and organizational builders whether for-profit, nonprofit, or in government. We define that as…
    • entrepreneurs: founding or leading a for-profit or nonprofit organization that provides critical goods or services to the underserved
    • organizational builders: supporting the growth of an organization, institution, or company focused on alleviating poverty or injustice but not as the founder of CEO
    • intrapreneurs: creating innovative solutions to tackle poverty or injustice from within an existing institution by shifting its culture and building new collaborations
  • Individuals who have a demonstrated history of impact, commitment and concrete connection to the region.
  • Leaders with strong personal integrity, unrelenting perseverance and moral imagination.
  • Committed individuals ready to undergo an intensive year-long personal transformation and leadership journey followed by an induction into the larger Fellows Community.

The Fellowship curriculum is centered around the principles of moral leadership:

  • Adaptive Leadership: Based on Ron Heifetz’s work, Adaptive Leadership is a practical leadership framework that supports Fellows’ ability to catalyse and embrace the gradual and meaningful process of creating change.
  • Authentic Voice: Grounded in Marshall Ganz’s life’s work, the Authentic Voice curriculum allows the Fellows to develop the capacity to articulate a hopeful vision, speak across lines of difference, and move others into action.
  • Good Society Readings: Modeled off The Aspen Institute, the Good Society Readings explore the meaning of a just society, and the moral and historical foundation of social change through text based dialogue
  • Managing Polarities: Based on Barry Johnson’s work, Polarities aims to cultivate an individual’s ability to lead effectively when opposing but interdependent and equally important values are in tension.
  • Systems Thinking: Fellows explore the concept of Systems Thinking by working collaboratively on live challenges—enabling them to better understand larger, systemic problems and design more effective interventions.

How to Apply

Our application process consists of these five steps.

  1. 1Step 1: Apply online —applications open on November 4th 2020 with two closing dates:
    1. 1Early Action close date of December 1st 2020. All applications completed by this date will be reviewed first.
    2. 2Regular Decision close date of January 4th 2021. All applications completed between December 2nd 2020 and January 4th 2021 will be reviewed after the Early Action applications have been reviewed.
  2. 2Step 2: Move to the second step of the application as follows:
    1. 1Shortlisted Early Action applicants move to step 2 of the process in January 2021
    2. 2Shortlisted Regular Decision applicants move to step 2 of the process in February 2021
  3. 3Step 3: Both shortlisted Early Action and Regular Decision applicants from step 2 take place in final selection in end March 2021
  4. 4Step 4: The 2021 Cohort will be selected in April 2021
  5. 5Step 5: Fellows are announced in end-April/early May 2021
