Pulitzer Center 2021 Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant for photojournalists ($2,500 grant)

Diversify Photo and the Pulitzer Center are pleased to open applications for the second year of the Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant, which is aimed at telling visual stories about and by photojournalists from historically underrepresented communities.

Pulitzer Center invite photojournalists to submit proposals for stories that focus on and explore the systemic and underreported issues in our communities, including but not limited to racial justice, climate change, environmental justice, gender equality, and human rights. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 applicants were limited to reporting within their local communities in the United States. This year, the Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant is extended to photojournalists around the world, with preference for journalists working within their own local communities. Grants of $2,500 will be awarded to three applicants to support their visual reporting projects. 

  • Applicants must be freelance photojournalists from anywhere in the world, and applicants are strongly encouraged to apply with a letter of commitment from a news outlet with significant reach.
  • Applications must be received in English. There is no application fee.
  • In addition to DPxPC funding, we expect news outlets to contribute to the cost of reporting these stories.

The Association for Research On Civil Society In Africa (AROCSA) PhD Fellowship 2020 (US$3,500 Grant)

As part of the program, selected PhD scholars who have successfully defended their research proposals will be provided research grants to cover the cost of their research i.e. fieldwork, data collection, data processing, and the printing of their final dissertations.

The research grant is targeted at encouraging the production and dissemination of knowledge by African scholars in the fields of nonprofit management, philanthropy, civil society, social entrepreneurship, and voluntary action studies in line with AROCSA’s mission to promote and advance a community of excellence in research and practice on civil society in the service of African development.

Successful applicants will be expected to present papers on their research at AROCSA’s next annual conference scheduled to hold in August 2021 where they will formally be inducted as AROCSA fellows. Their completed theses will also be hosted on the AROCSA website as an open source document to benefit other researchers and the general public.
Successful applicants will be awarded a grant of up to US$3,500.

Eligibility

AROCSA is accepting proposals from African scholars currently registered as full time PhD students with a university in Africa. Applicants’ theses should focus on nonprofit management, philanthropy, civil society, social entrepreneurship and voluntary action studies. Applicants should have already defended their research proposals at the time of application to be considered eligible.

Requirements

Applicants are required to apply for the PhD Workshop through the electronic application on the AROCSA website. Applications must include the following:

  1. Proof of registration with a university in Africa
  2. Copy of Approved Research proposal: Applicants MUST provide a copies of their defended research proposals and the focus of study MUST fall within any of nonprofit management, philanthropy, civil society, social entrepreneurship, and voluntary action studies.
  3. Letter of motivation from the applicant
  4. Letter of support from supervisor: Using the institution’s letterhead, the letter should contain the supervisor’s approval, confirm that the student has indeed successfully defended their research proposal, and include an assurance of continuous support for the duration of the research. The letter should also include the supervisor’s contact details.
  5. Budget: Applicants should present a detailed breakdown of finances required for the completion of their research, explaining how funds will be allocated and utilised from the collection of data to the completion of the thesis, clearly outlining the link between expenses and the phases of their research.
  6. Please compile all items listed above into a single PDF document before submission. All original documents created for submission should be presented as double spaced, 12pt font with one inch margins.

Please note that all items listed above are compulsory and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection Criteria

Grants are awarded based on merit. Applicants will be selected based on the following criteria:

  1. Potential quality and impact of proposed research.
  2. Alignment with the thematic research areas of nonprofit management, philanthropy, civil society, social entrepreneurship, and voluntary action studies

2020 ICFJ/FJP COVID-19 Reporting Grants for MENA Journalists ($2,500 grant)

This grant program is designed to provide financial support to individual journalists and freelancers in Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, and Yemen to assist them in their COVID-19 reporting. 

Selected journalists will receive a $2,500 grant to produce stories related to COVID-19 and its effects. Selected journalists will also receive a mentor to help them develop their stories for a period of two months. All grantees must participate in a kick-off call with mentors and ICFJ staff.

Requirements


In order to apply for this grant, you must fit the following criteria: 

  • Reporter working for an independent nonprofit or for-profit local news organizations, both located in the Middle East or North Africa region;
  • Have been a reporter for two years or more;
  • The publisher’s Facebook pages and Instagram accounts are in compliance with Facebook community standards and partner monetization policies.
  • Must accept to participate in a mentorship program for the grant period.

Grant preference will be given to journalists who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Serve underserved and economically disadvantaged communities;
  • Represent areas where COVID-19 impact is particularly acute;
  • Actively covering COVID-19 and producing original news content related to COVID-19;
  • Clearly and candidly explain the grant’s contribution to their reporting proposal;
  • Have a letter of support from publisher.

The Royal Africa Society/British Council Film Africa Travel Grants 2019/2020 (£2,500 grant)

Since its inception in 2011, Film Africa has gone from strength to strength bringing the best African cinema from across the continent and its diaspora to diverse UK audiences. Following a successful run of eight consecutive years, Film Africa will now be held biennially and the next festival edition will take place in November 2020.

In this fallow year, we will continue with our mission of celebrating and promoting contemporary African cinema in the UK through the Film Africa Travel Grants 2019-2020, a pilot scheme developed and delivered in partnership with the British Council.

The Film Africa Travel Grants will offer African filmmakers the opportunity to travel to the UK to attend one of eight key international film festivals where their work has been invited to screen.

Successful applicants may be awarded up to £2,500 to cover international travel (including visas), accommodation and subsistence costs for their visit to the UK. If you are an emerging African filmmaker with an invitation to screen your film at one of the eight festivals on our key festivals list and fulfil the eligibility criteria, we would love you to apply!

The main benefits of this exciting pilot scheme include:

  • Travel grants to support international travel to attend one of eight key festivals in the UK.
  • Promotion of work to our exclusive programming contacts in these key festivals.
  • A bespoke programme of networking opportunities, developed in partnership with the festivals and the British Council’s UK-based Film team.

If your film has already been accepted into a festival on our key festivals list, please fill in the online application form.

If you have not been selected, then we would strongly encourage you to submit your films to those festivals whose submissions are currently open. Please note that all participating festivals have kindly agreed to waive their submission fees to encourage as many African filmmakers as possible to submit their work.

British Council Sub-Saharan Africa Research Grants 2019 for young creative professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa (£2,500 grant)

The British Council is aiming to increase connections between the UK creative sectors and young creative professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa. As well as building connections, we aim to expand knowledge of contemporary African art in the UK.

With this in mind, we are seeking expressions of interest from UK based arts organisations, curators or programmers working in any of the following art forms – Visual Arts, Literature, Music, Theatre, Dance, Architecture, Design, Fashion and Film – to travel to Sub-Saharan Africa to connect with the local contemporary art sectors, and undertake their own professional research to be shared with a wider UK sector in their chosen field. The trips should take place between April 2019 and March 2020.

Research may take the form of meeting with potential artists and partners; finding out more about your chosen art form’s ecosystem in a country or countries; gaining an understanding of art trends in Sub-Saharan Africa; meeting arts organisations and/or attending events and festivals with a view to programming or curating work in the UK.

Aims of the programme
This opportunity aims to:

  • facilitate the UK creative sector’s ambitions to connect with young, African creatives and art professionals who are 18 to 35-year-olds;
  • increase opportunities for UK arts organisations and individuals to visit African cities and gain further insight into the chosen local art sector;
  • encourage and support the development of networks that connect the UK and Sub-Saharan African arts sectors for the long term;
  • widen the opportunities for art professionals in Sub-Saharan Africa to connect with UK arts organisations and arts professionals.

Countries covered

The countries covered under the programme (in which the British Council operates) are: Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The grants

The British Council will award up to nine grants of £2,500 (each) to proposals to undertake research of your chosen artistic sector & travel in the Sub-Saharan Region between April 2019 and March 2020. We will be considering a geographical spread across the continent when assessing applications.

Previous research trips

Andrew Kelly, Director of the Bristol Cultural Development Partnership, received a research grant to travel to the Ake Festival in Nigeria in October 2018. You can read a blog about his experience here.
