The Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC) is a part of the DAAD’s scholarship program for “Development-Related Postgraduate Courses.” If you would like to apply for the scholarship offered in this context, please note that several special conditions apply.

Eligibility Criteria

Please also refer to the brochure for “Development-Related Postgraduate Courses” for more information. Where MIPLC and DAAD have differing requirements, assume that the stricter requirement will be applied.

You are eligible for the DAAD scholarship for “Development-Related Postgraduate Courses” if you fulfill the following formal requirements:

You hold at least a four-year Bachelor’s degree (or a three-year Bachelor’s degree plus a further degree), completed with above-average results.
You received your latest degree no more than six years ago.
You have at least two years of full-time professional experience gained in a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country (university staff and academics are generally not taken into account). To meet this requirement, it is sufficient if you have completed the two years by the time the program starts in October. In any case, the experience must have been gained after the completion of your first university degree.
Your English test scores meet the MIPLC requirements.

Due to the high volume of applications, we have to apply these criteria very strictly. If you do not fulfill them, you will not be considered for the DAAD scholarship. However, you are still welcome to apply for admission to the MIPLC, provided you fulfill the MIPLC admission criteria

Scholarship Worth:

The scholarship recipient(s) will get a full tuition waiver from the MIPLC.
The DAAD will pay the scholarship recipient(s) a monthly stipend of EUR 750.00. As a rule, the scholarship additionally includes certain payments towards health, accident and liability insurance coverage in Germany.
In addition, the DAAD will generally pay an appropriate travel allowance, unless these costs are covered by the home country or by another funding source.
Furthermore, the DAAD will also pay a study and research allowance. Last but not least, the scholarship covers a mandatory two-month German course before the start of the MIPLC LL.M. program.
The scholarship does not cover additional costs, e.g. your enrollment fees or the fees for a semester ticket for public transport in Munich.

Application Procedure

To apply for this scholarship, please proceed as follows:

Please refer to the DAAD program brochure 2017/18 and read the information carefully.
Determine whether you are eligible to apply by DAAD and MIPLC standards, keeping in mind that where MIPLC and DAAD have differing requirements, the stricter requirements prevail.
Apply for admission to the MIPLC (please refer to the How to Apply page).
When you come to the end of the online application form, check “I would like to apply for the DAAD scholarship” and complete the MIPLC Financial Assistance Application Form that opens automatically (please refer to the Financial Assistance Application Instructions).
Print the forms and add all required documentation, as per the instructions provided.
Download and complete the DAAD Scholarship Application Form and add the other documents required by the DAAD (please refer to the DAAD brochure; NB: the MIPLC does not require a research proposal). You only have to submit one copy of each document, even if a document, e.g. your CV, is required by both MIPLC and DAAD.
Make sure that your file is complete, including all three application forms
(the MIPLC application form for admission; the MIPLC application form for financial assistance, and the DAAD application form for the scholarship)
and all the required documents. Otherwise, your application cannot be processed. Please note that we only need the original application package, no additional copies.
Make copies of all application documents. If your are awarded the scholarship, you will have to upload electronic copies of these documents to the DAAD’s system.
Send your application: Please submit your application directly to the MIPLC, unless you are from Cameroon, in which case you must submit your application through the German Embassy in your country. Your complete file must reach the MIPLC by October 15 of the year preceding the program start (or July 31, if you are from Cameroon and therefore have to submit your application to the German Embassy).

Special Application Deadlines

You have to apply more than a year in advance.

For the 2017/18 intake, the deadline for applications is October 15, 2016. Your complete file with all required documents (this includes your English test scores) has to reach the MIPLC by this date. Late or incomplete applications cannot be considered for the scholarship.

Applicants from Cameroon have to submit their application file to the German Embassy in their home country. The deadline for applications is July 31 of the previous year, e.g. July 31, 2016, for the 2017/18 intake.

The DAAD scholarship aims to fund and support foreign students, graduates, doctoral students, and young and early-stage researchers from developing countries who wish to study selected courses in a German university. The Scholarship Covers any of the following:

Postgraduate courses for professionals from developing countries at German institutions of Higher education
Duration: 12-24 months, depending on the particular institution
Internationally recognised Master’s degree
Includes German Universities and “Fachhochschulen” (Universities of Applied Science)
Support of selected programmes with a variety of full or partial scholarships
Funded by the BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development) but admission is also open to self-financed participants or students financed through government or other sources

Prerequisites and Requirements

1. Prerequisites and Requirements Selection criteria and procedures for DAAD scholarship recipients ensure that

priority target candidates have proven, development-related motivation and can be expected to make full use of their scholarship and education by taking on social responsibility later in their careers, acting as agents of change who stimulate and support development in their personal and professional surroundings (motivation, commitment to development),
the candidates have the professional and academic qualifications necessary to ensure successful completion of the degree programme in Germany (final scores on previous academic examinations, language skills),
women and candidates from disadvantaged groups who meet the required academic and professional standards and show proven commitment to development-related issues are especially targeted for programme admission.

a) The typical scholarship holder:

works either for a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country (according to the DAC list of the OECD) and, as such, is engaged in the planning and execution of directives and projects with emphasis on development policies having a bearing on technological, economic or social areas.
holds a Bachelor’s degree (4 years) in a related subject.
has completed an academic degree with far above average results and at least two years of related professional experience.
is no older than 36 (for some courses the age limit is 32), respectively his/her academic degrees should normally not be more than 6 years old. Concerning a possible age limit, please refer to the course details on the following pages.

b) Language skills:

For courses in German: DSH 2 or TestDaF 4; at time of application German skills at completed level A2 are required. In addition, German language courses at level A2 or B1 are highly recommended.
Exception: Candidates for some German-speaking or bilingual courses need a very good command of German at time of application. For detailed information see the relevant course introduction on the following pages.
Note: It is not possible to pass the required German language courses (DSH or TestDaF) without any previous basic knowledge in the German language (at least A.2.1 Level), even with the preceding six-month, intensive course in Germany. Passing the language test is a formal prerequisite for graduating from the German university
For courses in English: IELTS (Band 6) certificate or TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 internet based)

c) Proof of current work situation: All applicants should state their current work situation at the time of application and submit the following proof: Certificate(s) of employment that include the exact position and period of employment; a letter of reference from the employer(s), ideally guaranteeing re-employment after completion of the postgraduate course in Germany. d) Statement of motivation: Applicants must submit a statement of motivation explaining why they are interested in attending a particular postgraduate course with reference to their current employment. e) Application formalities: If you have no private financial resources or cannot obtain a scholarship from your government, company or an international organisation, you may apply for a DAAD scholarship – either full or partial. DAAD application forms are available from the German Embassies, the DAAD offices abroad, directly from the University or on the DAAD website. Applications from Cameroon, Myanmar and Nigeria must be submitted via the German Embassy. Applicants from the People’s Republic of China are asked to submit an APS Certificate, as well as 2 address labels written in Chinese characters with their application documents. Please be sure to address applications sent to the DAAD directly to DAAD Section 431! Required documents (in the following order):

confirmation of employment from the employer in your home country and if possible, a guarantee of re-employment upon your return home
Proof of language abilities:

– English – IELTS or TOEFL (Note: Institutional TOEFL will not be accepted) – German – necessary for the courses taught in German; for the courses taught in English, if available

certified copies of awarded academic degrees
certified copies of academic transcripts
certified copy of School Leaving Certificate

Note: Some courses may require additional documents. For detailed information, please see the relevant course description on the following pages. All documents must be submitted as identical duplicates. Applications that do not clearly state the desired degree course or are not completed in full, cannot be processed and will not be considered. If applying to more than one course, please list courses in order of priority. You must send one full set of application documents for each course applied to. All submitted applications forms, including all required documents, copies, etc. become property of the DAAD. The applicant has no right to payment or reimbursement. No documents will be returned. For economic and environmental reasons, please avoid using sheet holders and plastic folders in your application.

Dates and Deadlines

Scholarship applicants from developing countries (on the DAC List of the OECD) can apply at the German embassy or DAAD regional office, directly at the DAAD in Bonn or directly to the university. The general closing dates for applications are as follows:

University: 30th September or 15th October

Applicants should be sure to check information regarding application closing dates directly with the individual universities because they may vary from the general deadlines listed above. The selection process generally takes place at the universities in the period from November to February. Scholarships are usually awarded for the following winter semester.
