The African Development Bank’s Fashionomics Africa Call for Applications is seeking for African Fashion, Textile, Apparel and Accessories entrepreneurs and businesses to apply and benefit from the Fashionomics Africa Online Incubator and Accelerator programs.

The programs’ duration will be 8-weeks each and the content will be available in English, French, Arabic and Portuguese.

Through a competitive process, the most promising fashion entrepreneurs will be invited to pitch their business ideas at the online Fashionomics Africa Pitching Days Competitions, resulting in 12 finalists each from the incubator and accelerator programs, who will vie/compete for the top 2 prizes of 20,000 USD each to scale up their operations.

Beginning Investigator Grant for Catalytic Research (BIG Cat) 2022 for Cancer Research in Africa ($55,000 USD grant)

The research proposed for funding may be in any area of cancer research, including basic research, clinical research, population-based research and translational research across the cancer care continuum (prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment , supportive and palliative care, and survivorship). These grants are intended to catalyze subsequent application for funding from other funding sources, not to support longer term research.

Each grant will provide US$55,000 over two years for expenses related to the research project, which may include salary and benefits of the grant recipient and any collaborator, postdoctoral or clinical research fellows, graduate students (including tuition costs), and/or research assistants, research/laboratory supplies, equipment, publication charges for manuscripts that pertain directly to the funded project, and other research expenses. Indirect costs is limited to no more than 10% of the total grant amount. Up to US$10,000 may be allocated from the grant to support travel applicable to the research project and relevant scientific meetings, including mandatory attendance at the 2023 AACR Annual Meeting and biennial AORTIC conference. The grants are not intended for principal investigators outside of Africa, although collaborative research projects are encouraged. All funds provided must be spent in Africa with the exception of limited support for travel to international scientific meetings and conferences.

Eligibility

At the start of the grant term on July 1, 2022, the Principal investigator (PI) must:

  • Be a beginning investigator, defined as a clinician or scientist who received his or her highest degree of study within the past ten years. An earned academic (or research) doctorate [such as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)], or medical degree [such as a Doctor of Medicine (MD),Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) or Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB, MB BS, BM MCh, etc.)] which is considered the highest degree of study in most African countries. When an investigator has received multiple terminal degrees, the calculation will be based on the date of award of the most recent degree.
  • Be a current member with AORTIC. Note: AORTIC membership is also mandatory at LOI stage.
  • Reside in and be conducting research in Africa with particular relevance to the African cancer burden on the continent. Proof of residency is required.
  • Have legal residency status in Africa.
  • Not have received a BIG CAT award in prior years.

Citizenship Requirements

Applicants must have legal residency status in Africa. A list of eligible countries can be found in the Competitive Letter of Intent Program Guidelines and Application Instructions. Proof of residency is required.

Reuters announced the third edition of the Reuters Photojournalism Grants program, renamed the Yannis Behrakis Photojournalism Grants, at the Visa pour l’Image international festival of photojournalism, taking place in Perpignan, France.

The Reuters photography grant program, launched in 2017, has been expanded and renamed here for long-time Reuters photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Yannis Behrakis, who died earlier this year.

Aspiring photojournalists attending Visa pour l’Image international festival of photojournalism will be able to learn more about Reuters photojournalism and further details on the grant program by visiting the Reuters stand, located on the second floor of the Palais des Congrès.

Application requirements:

– Applicants must be between the ages of 18-35

– They must submit a 30-40 picture portfolio, a detailed story proposal and a CV.

– The project can be a work-in-progress or a new idea.

– A project focused on a subject in a community or location within close proximity, that can be completed in a few weeks or months, is advisable

Google News Initiative (GNI) YouTube Innovation Funding Program ($250,000 USD grant)

In July, Google announced the steps we’re taking as part of the Google News Initiative to support the future of news in online video and our efforts to improve the news experience on YouTube. This included a $25M investment across the following three areas:

  • News working group to collaborate with partners to help us develop new product features and improve the news experience on YouTube
  • Innovation funding to provide capacity-building grants to news publishers
  • Expanded support team for news partners around the world

Through this program, we will provide selected news organizations around the world with grants to support building stronger video capabilities and innovating with video formats.

Best practices gained from this program will be shared publicly, providing all newsrooms the opportunity to learn and apply insights as we work together to support the development of long-term, sustainable video businesses.

Application eligibility

  • Eligible projects must come from publishers, broadcasters, agencies, video creators and production companies that aim to produce news content that is factual, informative, and trustworthy. Collaborations amongst applicants are welcome.
  • Eligible projects must demonstrate a scrupulous approach to journalistic practices including but not limited to news-gathering, fact checking, objectivity, balance and ethics.
  • Eligible projects must focus on building capabilities to create video programming focused on topical news, current affairs and politics in formats that follow YouTube best practices and/or demonstrate a strategy to develop new formats to grow an engaged audience.
  • Eligible applicants must demonstrate at least a basic level of video production and operations expertise and manage at least one YouTube channel with a minimum of 50,000 subscribers.

Google will accept applications from organizations headquartered in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greater China, Finland, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Philippines, Poland, United Kingdom, United States, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Vietnam

Funding model:

Grant size will vary based on the application details and may be valued up to approximately $250,000 USD. As the application process moves forward, we will work with you to determine the appropriate grant size based on the proposal.

Grants may be valued up to approximately $300K but your application is not required to meet that amount. Google will retain the right to reduce the grant size based on scrutiny of the application.

Selection Criteria: Eligible projects will be evaluated primarily against the following criteria:

  • Innovation: Preferred projects will demonstrate an innovative component and involve or promote the production of original journalism.
  • Sustainability: Preferred projects will demonstrate a plan for long term sustainability.

IMU–Simons African Fellowship Program 2018 for mathematicians from African developing countries ( 5,000 USD grant)

The IMU–Simons African Fellowship Program is funded by the Simons Foundation, NY, USA and supports research sabbaticals for mathematicians from African developing countries employed in Africa to travel to an internationally known mathematical center of excellence (worldwide) for collaborative research. All travel and living expenses of the grantees will be covered by the fellowship up to 5,000 USD.

The Simons Foundation is a private foundation based in New York City, incorporated in 1994 by Jim and Marilyn Simons. The Simons Foundation’s mission is to advance the frontiers of research in mathematics and the basic sciences. They sponsor a range of programs in the sciences, including grants programs in mathematics and the physical sciences. The primary focus of the foundation’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences division is the theoretical sciences radiating from mathematics: in particular, the fields of mathematics, theoretical computer science and theoretical physics.

The “IMU – Simons African Fellowship Program” will run for 5 years until September 2021.

  • The program supports research sabbaticals for mathematicians from AFRICAN developing countries employed in AFRICA to travel to an Internationally known mathematical centre of excellence/ university (WORLDWIDE) for collaborative research.
  • The program is not for any post graduate courses or post doctoral training but for a LIMITED RESEARCH PERIOD.
  • The grant covers TRAVEL and BASIC LIVING COSTS of African mathematicians working in Africa (Specifically coming from a developing country, the definition of which is determined by the IMU for all its schemes) during the sabbatical.

Grant Details

The grant under this scheme will cover up to 5,000 USD:

  1. Travel costs
    1. from the place of work of the applicant to that of the host to the extent of economy class airfare.  The flight will be booked and directly paid by the IMU Secretariat.
    2. (Public) transport (surface transport by rail or bus between the nearest city where the airport is located and the headquarters of the candidate or the city/town where the host institution is located, if necessary). Maximum four (4) Taxi fares (on submission of receipts) may be allowed to travel between the home and the airport/railway station (upon arrival and departure).
    3. In case the applicant has to stay in a hotel before departure or upon arrival, this needs to be mentioned in the budget details. Maximum one (1) night (both arrival and departure) can be paid from the grant.
  2. Visa fees
  3. Travel insurance charges
  4. Basic living cost  (daily allowance based on living cost of the visiting country/city, This amount includes the cost for public transport and all other living costs). For a list please go here.
  5. Accommodation cost in the host country (Only guest house of the institution or a rented flat. Hotels are allowed if the hosts provides a statement that no guesthouse or rented flat is available).

Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Young African Scholars Program 2017/2018 ( $2,000 USD grant)

Every two years the foundation hosts the Young African Scholars program. Ten scholars whose proposed projects are judged to be of high quality and closely relevant to the foundation’s interest in violence and aggression are selected to take part.

The program includes a methods workshop, fieldwork research grants of $2,000 USD each, editorial and publication assistance, and sponsorship at an international conference to present research findings.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be aged 35 or younger and must have been educated on the African continent and currently residing there.

Application Procedure:

Applications are due by December 15th.  All application materials must be submitted by the end of that day (midnight, EST) in order to be considered.

Applications should be no more than six pages and include the following:

  • Research question
  • Short literature review
  • Description of research methods to be used
  • Two-page C.V.

Call for Proposals: Community Media Fund 2017 for Civil Society Organizations across Africa ( $10,000 USD Grant)

The Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA) and the Ford Foundation have partnered to establish a Community Media Fund (CMF) to enhance citizens’ access to relevant information that enables the public to support policies and practices that drive inclusive economic and human development locally, regionally and nationally.  The CMF’s will make disbursements to grantees in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

The CMF seeks to award grants to key civil society organizations, community media and non-governmental organisations in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa to strengthen citizen journalism, enhance the financial literacy of citizens, improve their access to relevant data and build the capacity of community media to improve governance and accountability through analysis and reporting.

Concept notes from eligible organizations who are implementing interventions in the following thematic areas are currently being accepted:

  • Producing and disseminating media content on their host communities; and or
  • Focusing on transparency and accountability, financial Journalism, financial literacy, greater access to data, social justice, or investigative reporting.

Eligible Requirements

Eligible grant applicants must:

  1. Be an Africa-focused and headquartered:
    • Civil society organisation (CSO)/non-governmental organisation (NGO) supporting community media; or
    • Media training institution; or
    • Community media outlet, including an outlet affiliated with educational institutions; or
    • Network of community media; or
    • CSO/NGO supporting initiatives that increase the visibility of emerging non-traditional reporters; or a
    • CSO/NGO focusing on transparency, accountability and financial literacy at the community level.
  2. Be registered in good standing in accordance with the relevant laws of Kenya or Nigeria or South Africa.
  3. Be directly responsible for the preparation, implementation and management of the proposed project.
  4. Have prior experience carrying out activities in priority areas of this RFP, specifically:
    • producing and disseminating media content on their host communities; and/or
    • focusing on transparency and accountability, financial Journalism, financial literacy, greater access to data, social justice, or investigative reporting.
  5. Must have a bank account and be willing to open a separate account for the grant. and
  6. Must have certified financial audit reports.

Benefits:

  • The CMF will have two rounds of a call for proposals.  This is the first round.  The second round will be in 2018.
  • The minimum grant amount is $10,000 USD. The CMF will award grants for a minimum duration of six months and a maximum of 12 months.

AESA Grand Challenges Africa Innovation Seed Grants 2017 for African Innovators ( $100,000 USD Grant)

Grand Challenges Africa (GC Africa) is a scheme of the Africa Academy of Sciences’ Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA) initiated to support innovations that address Africa’s health and developmental challenges. The scheme seeks to promote Africa-led scientific innovations to help countries better achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by awarding seed and full grants to the continent’s most impressive solutions.

AESA implements GC Africa in partnership with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development Agency (NEPAD) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Round 1 is a joint initiative of GC Africa partners and the Paris-based, Institut Pasteur

The overall objective will be to focus African scientists to work in local and global partnerships to accelerate the development and deployment of interventions and innovations targeting communicable and non-communicable diseases that affect mothers, new-born babies and children.

Eligibility Criteria
The call will be open to African investigators working in African based, domestic organizations, including non-profit organizations, international organizations, government agencies, research and academic institutions.

The call is also open to non-African investigators with an appointment/affiliation with any of the nine Institute Pasteur institutes in Africa, who are resident in Africa, with at least 18 months left on their tenure of service/affiliation by the time of receiving the award.

Funding levels

  • Phase I Funding: Funded up to $100,000 USD per two-year project. These awards are meant to provide an opportunity to test particularly bold, proof of concept ideas, including applying approaches from outside the fields indicated for this call. New approaches could be piloted as additions to ongoing projects.
  • Phase II funding: Winners of Phase I grants will have an opportunity to apply for follow-on, phase II funding in future but please note that support for phase II funding is NOT part of this call. We expect that successful projects funded at Phase I by GC Africa, and by our partners BMGF and Grand Challenges Canada (GCC), and which demonstrate promising results, will have the opportunity to apply for Phase II funding either to GC Africa or directly to the other partners.

2016 Congo Basin Grant Program for African Graduate Students & Early Career Professionals ($5,000 USD Grant)

The Congo Basin Grant Program (CBGP) has been established to provide competitive research grants of up to $5,000 USD for African graduate students and early career professionals working in the areas of biodiversity, conservation and environmental sustainability in the Congo Basin region.

The Congo Basin rainforests comprise one of the most important centers of biodiversity in the world and harbor an estimated 20% of all known species of plants and animals.

CARN established the Congo Basin Grant Program in 2014 to support and encourage young African scientists to conduct novel conservation research and management activities that address the critical challenges facing wildlife, biodiversity and ecosystem health in the Congo Basin. Critically, these small grants can build the foundation for young African researchers to become independent, providing “bridge funding” that allows them to compete in larger international arenas.

Most importantly, small research grants will encourage and provide a means for young Africans to remain engaged in their research and stay in their native countries to practice their trades.

Eligibility

  • Resident of one of the following countries: Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and Uganda.
  • 35 years of age or younger
  • Enrolled in a graduate program or hold a professional position

2015 Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation Call for Documentary Photography Entries ($5,000 USD Grant)

Documentary photographers from around the world are invited to submit documentary photography projects along with an 15-image supporting portfolio on topics of human suffering and unrest, forgotten communities, exploited lands and people, on communities ravaged by war, poverty, famine, disease, and the exploitation of global resources.

 Grant

  • The Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation for Documentary Photography & Film will award one $5,000 USD grant to one documentary photography project based on the quality of the submitted 15-image portfolio, the strength of the submitted proposal, as well as any supporting materials including an updated CV.
  • The “Top 12″ shortlisted portfolios will be featured and displayed during Les Rencontres d’Arles (Arles, France) at its new 18th century facility and foundation home located on 19/21 Rue de la Liberté/14 Rue Barrême.
  • The selected project must be completed the calendar year following receipt of the grant. Grants are open to professional and emerging photographers in all countries.
  • Photographers are expected to be committed to the field of reportage and documentary photography.

Eligible Work

  • All proposed projects and submitted portfolios must be works of non-fiction and must be based on such pressing social issues as health, poverty, oppression, war, famine, religious/political persecution and similar topics.
  • Proposals must be for new or continuing projects. Portfolios should be a representative sampling of your documentary work.
