Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project 2022 for non-profit NGOs and CSOs ( US$ 120,000 in grants)

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project is a competitive grant program under the umbrella of the Global Development Awards Competition (GDAC), administered by GDN, funded under the Policy and Human Resources Development Fund (PHRD) trust fund managed by the World Bank, and generously supported by the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan. The award program invites non-profit NGOs and CSOs to submit project proposals supporting (in particular) improved service delivery, and innovative approaches that may be scaled-up through a grant. The Award targets projects currently at the stage of implementation, and which have a high potential for impact targeting exceptionally marginalized and disadvantaged groups located in developing countries – per the World Bank’s recognition as low and middle income countries.

Prize:

The winning projects will receive grants worth US$ 120,000. The awards will be given to organizations whose projects embody an innovative approach to an important development need and hold the greatest promise for:

  1. responding directly to the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable, underserved groups to improve their lives aiming at rapid results for improved livelihood;
  2. supporting initiatives that lead to developing sustainable outcomes through the scaling-up of the project.

The two first prize winners will receive a grant of US$ 50,000 each. The second prize will receive a grant of US$ 20,000. Additionally, awardees will be paired with a Technical Advisor throughout the entire implementation of the grant. 

Finalists will be invited to join a communications training in preparation of a pitch of their project in front of a high-level Jury, which will decide which research proposal to award, at a physical event in March/April 2023 (details to be defined) and projects are expected to start in May 2023. 

Timeline:

  • Announcement of Eligibility screening results: 21 November 2022
  • Announcement of Desk review results (1st shortlisted applications): 15 December 2022
  • Announcement of Business review results (2nd shortlisted applications): 30 December 2022
  • Site visits to 2nd shortlisted applications: 2 January until 27 January 2023
  • Announcement of finalists: 17 February 2023
  • Announcement of winners: March/April 2023

Finalists are expected to be available for the Communications Training and the physical event for the presentation of their projects to the jury in March/April. The date will be announced in late 2022

The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund 2020 for sub-Saharan African Researchers ( £20,000 in grants)

The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund was established in 2012, with generous support from The ALBORADA Trust. The Fund supports pairs of researchers (post-doctoral level and above) from theUniversity of Cambridge (or an affiliated institution such as the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, NIAB and British Antarctic Survey) and sub-Saharan African institutions, across all disciplines, to initiate and/or strengthen research collaborations. To date, more than 200 awards have been made, to enable Cambridge researchers to engage with African colleagues from 28 African countries.

Some awardees have been able to use the preliminary results from their seed fund / research collaboration to apply for and win significant funding (e.g. Royal Society/Leverhulme Awards, Global Challenges Research Fund, etc.).

Funding

The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund competitively awards grants of between £1,000 and £20,000, for:

  • research costs (such as reagents, fieldwork and equipment)
  • research-related travel between Cambridge and Africa
  • conducting research training activities in Africa (e.g. setting up courses/workshops).

How to apply

The online application form has been designed to allow both applicants (Cambridge- and Africa-based) to log in, update, save and eventually submit electronically.

To access the form, the Cambridge based applicant must Register Here. Only applicants with @cam.ac.uk, @sanger.ac.uk, @babraham.ac.uk, @bas.ac.uk and @niab.ac.uk email addresses can register.

The Cambridge-based applicant must then log in to the Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund application form, where they will see the words “Invite a 2nd applicant to view/edit this submission”. Click on this link in order to invite the Africa-based applicant to register and edit the forms.

If you have a social enterprise idea, we want to help you make it happen! Participants will learn from leading social entrepreneurs, business professionals and other youth who are keen on social innovation, while expanding their networks for potential collaborations for good.

Admitted participants will attend a 4-day YSE Workshop held in March 2020 in Singapore, and pitch for a chance to be shortlisted into the YSE Programme, which includes a mentorship scheme; overseas study visit and an opportunity to pitch for funding.

  • Are a committed individual or have a team (up to 3 members can join)

Sage, the market and technology leader for cloud accounting, people & payroll, and payment systems, has today launched the second round of funding from Sage Foundation’s Enterprise Fund. The fund supports the creation of either new or piloted entrepreneurial programmes to help improve the lives of military veterans, young people or women and girls in Africa and Sage’s local communities around the world.

Sage Foundation’s Enterprise Fund has been designed to support small non-profits with exceptional, original ideas on the brink of delivering real change, take a bold step forward when they are unable to make their idea a reality due to lack of funds.

Requirements:

  • Enterprising and entrepreneurial ideas to help improve the lives of either: military veterans, young people or women and girls in 21 countries where we operate around the world.

Funding:

Enterprise Fund Criteria Checklist

  • You must be a recognized/registered charity or non-profit organisation in accordance with local country governance and laws
  • Your organisation must have an income that is less than $2M
  • Your organization’s work must focus on either supporting Military Veterans, Young People (up to 25 years) and/or Women and Girls
  • Your funding request is to support projects or initiatives that have been operational for two years or less
  • Your funding request must be for work that is delivered and benefits communities within a 50km radius of a qualifying Sage office. Please note: Locations will be detailed in the application form.
  • Your organisation must be able to provide volunteer opportunities for Sage colleagues to support you and / or your work

Ellen MacArthur Foundation New Plastic Economy Innovation Prize 2017 ($2,000,000 in grants)

The New Plastics Economy Innovation Prize is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and was launched in collaboration with HRH The Prince of Wales’s International Sustainability Unit. The Prize is funded by Wendy Schmidt, Lead Philanthropic Partner of the New Plastics Economy Initiative.

The demand for plastics products is expected to double in the next 20 years – but the plastics system is broken. Only 14% of plastic packaging is recycled, with the remainder, worth $80-120 billion, lost as waste. Most plastic packaging items are used only once before being discarded, often ending up polluting the environment. If nothing changes, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. This new prize aims to keep plastics as valuable materials in the economy, and out of the ocean.

To achieve the goal of eliminating plastic packaging waste, the Prize is composed of two parallel challenges:

  1. The $1 million Circular Design Challenge which invites applicants to rethink how we can get products to people without generating plastic waste. The Challenge will focus on small-format packaging items (10% of all packaging) such as shampoo sachets, wrappers, straws and coffee cup lids, which are currently almost never recycled and often end up in the environment. Anyone with a good idea for how to get products to people without using disposable packaging can enter this Challenge partnered by OpenIDEO.
  2. The $1 million Circular Materials Challenge seeks ways to make all plastic packaging recyclable. About 13% of today’s packaging, such as crisp packets and food wrappers, is made of layers of different materials fused together. This multi-layer construction provides important functions like keeping food fresh, but also makes the packaging hard to recycle. The Challenge therefore invites innovators to find alternative materials that could be recycled or composted. The Challenge partner is NineSigma.

Benefits:

  • Innovators who apply to the Prize are competing for up to $2,000,000 in grants and visibility of their solutions to major businesses, the innovator community and the public.
  • Winners will enter a 12-month accelerator programme offering exclusive access to industry experts, commercial guidance, feedback on user and scalability requirements, advice on performance expectations, and access to innovation labs for testing and development. The first winners will be announced later this year.

Eligibility
To be eligible for a grant, the following criteria must be met:
  • The applicant is a registered national or regional civil society organisation (CSO).
  • The applicant is seeking £30,000 per year or less.
  • The applicant is applying for funding for one to three years
  • The average of the applicant’s total income over the last two years is less than £3m
  • The project must address one of the five focus areas
  • The project will take place in an eligible Commonwealth Foundation member country
  • The project has not yet started
  • The application includes counterpart resourcing of a minimum of 10% of the total project budget. Applicants will be required to provide a detailed budget at full application stage where counterpart resourcing must be clearly reflected.
  • The applicant does not have an existing grant from the Commonwealth Foundation at the time the application window is opened. Please note that in order for a recent grantee
    to be eligible they must have submitted all reports on existing grants and received notification that the existing grant is closed.

Documentation:

  • The applicant will provide the following documents as part of the application:
    1. a completed logic model using the Commonwealth Foundation template
    2. a copy of the organisation’s registration certificate (the official registration document provided by the relevant authorities in the country concerned)
    3. a copy of the organisation’s most recent audited accounts (it must include both the accounts and the opinion of the external auditor who has certified them)
    4. a copy of the registration certificate for all partner organisations

Timeline:

  • The call for applications opens at 12.00 GMT on 1 December 2015
  • The deadline for submission of the preliminary application form is 17.00 GMT on 5 January 2016
  • Preliminary applications will be assessed in January and February 2016
  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full application in March 2015
  • The deadline for submission of full applications is 29 March 2016
  • All applicants will receive a formal notification on the outcome of their application by the end of July 2016 at the latest
For this grant cycle, projects should start between and October and December 2016.

2015 Getty Images Instagram Grant for Photographers ($USD 30,000 in Grants)

Getty Images believes that images have the power to move the world, and that photography is a compelling tool for telling social, political and cultural stories. That is why we are proud to announce, in collaboration with Instagram, the inaugural Getty Images Instagram Grant.

What

The purpose of this grant is to support photographers using Instagram to document stories from underrepresented communities around the world. Getty Images recognize that Instagram has introduced new opportunities for emerging voices, outside the mainstream media, to create and share projects of social importance. This grant provides financial support and mentorship to amplify their impact.

Format:
  • Only digital submissions through our online entry system will be accepted. Prints, books, slides or transparencies or other such materials will not be reviewed by judges nor returned to applicant.
Eligibility:
  • Applicants must be photographers using Instagram to document and share stories of social impact in areas of the world which are traditionally uncovered by mainstream media.
  • Images submitted for consideration by the judges must adhere to Instagram’s community guidelines.
  • Contributors to Getty Images who are not employees are eligible

Application Process:

Before you begin to register and apply please prepare the following:
  • Personal background information, maximum 500 words.
  • Details on your approach to using Instagram and how you intend to use the funds to support new or ongoing projects of social impact on Instagram.
  • 10-20 images from your Instagram account, including links, sized at a minimum of 1000×1000 pixels at 72dpi.
  • Please use the following file naming convention:

Benefit:

  • A total of three grants of $10,000 each will be awarded.
