USADF Accelerate Africa Entrepreneurship Challenge 2022 for youth & Women-Led Enterprises (US$250,000 in grant)

USADF’s Accelerate Africa Entrepreneurship Challenge is an initiative of USADF’s Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Portfolio designed to address Africa’s youth bulge, economically empower youth and women, and impact job creation across Africa.

The Accelerate Africa Entrepreneurship Challenge is intended to invest in Micro, Small, and Mid-Size enterprises (MSMEs) that:
• Address Africa’s youth bulge by prioritizing job creation to enhance youth productivity and livelihoods
• Economically empower youth and women to apply business solutions to social problems and create sustainable employment across Africa
• Addresses unmet needs of underserved and at-risk communities and/or market demand
• Formalize market opportunities and supply chain linkages for youth and women-owned MSMEs

USADF is excited to request proposals for the USADF Accelerate Africa Entrepreneurship Challenge. Proposals are invited from eligible African youth and women-led enterprises. Selected enterprises will receive funding in the form of grant capital of up to $250,000. To be considered for the Challenge, applicants must be 100% African-owned and -managed private companies registered and operating in Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

Applicants must submit the completed application template, as well as all required attachments, on or before September 30, 2022. Please note that applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis, so it is advised that applicants submit their proposals as soon as possible.

Requirements

USADF is excited to request proposals for the USADF Accelerate Africa Entrepreneurship Challenge. Proposals of up to US$250,000 in grant capital per award will be considered.

  • To be considered for the Challenge, applicants must be 100% African-owned and -managed MSMEs or ventures registered and operating in Africa.
  • Projects must be innovative scalable enterprises that address local needs through the creation of jobs and wealth. These projects should clearly outline the expected impact on communities and livelihoods, an increase in job creation, improvement of women’s access to funding, reduction of poverty, and enhancement of youth productivity.

    Winning applicants will receive:
    • Grant capital of US$50,000 to US$250,000 from USADF
    • Access to intensive local technical assistance and governance support

Membership in News Fund for Newsrooms Worldwide ($400,000 in grant)

Membership Puzzle Project and Media Development Investment Fund are excited to announce the reopening of the Membership in News Fund, a global fund to catalyze membership design in newsrooms around the world.

The Membership in News Fund provides financial and venture support to help news organizations build strong and flexible relationships with their audience members that can drive greater sustainability and impact – and help expand the journalism field’s understanding of what works. 

Membership Puzzle Project first launched the Membership in News Fund in 2018. The $700,000 fund supported 23 membership experiments in 13 countries with grants between $10,000 and $60,000 each. Grant recipients received funding, targeted coaching, and an opportunity to join a global community of practice built around membership

The 2020 fund totals $400,000, and we will give a maximum award of $40,000 per proposal. Applicants will be asked to propose a grant amount that is commensurate with the cost of implementing their proposal. Based on the size of our fund and the level of venture support that MPP and MDIF intend to provide to selected proposals, we anticipate selecting no more than 15 proposals.

Criteria

  • Applications from sites that publish coverage that is local/place-based; national (and with further reach); and subject matter/topical.
  • We’ll consider relevant projects from non-profit, for-profit, and cooperatively owned news organizations.
  • There is a strong preference for proposals from the following countries where Luminate already supports independent media: Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, India, and Myanmar. However, strong applications from other countries where MDIF works in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe are also eligible.
  • Eligibility is determined based on what you cover, where your primary audiences live, and/or where the majority of your staff is based, rather than the country your entity is officially registered in. (This is because MPP and MDIF understand that it can be challenging for news organizations to register in the countries they cover.)

To be eligible for consideration for the Membership in News Fund, a media organization must also meet these Media Development Investment Fund criteria: 

  • have a reputation for providing unique, credible, independent news, information or debate in the public interest; 
  • produce a significant amount of content that (a) is news and information and/or (b) provides a range of political opinions and promotes informed societal debate. The applicant must be independent from the government or of any other interest group;
  • have a record consistent with fostering democratic practices and institutions, political pluralism, transparency, human rights, and dignity and equal rights for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion and other subjects of discrimination; 
  • be legally registered according to all applicable laws;
  • have no part owned by a government or state agency, a foreign legal entity or any political or economic interest. This restriction may be waived where the applicant’s editorial independence is not in question.

Your proposal could be a good fit for the Membership in News Fund if:

  • Membership is part of your organization’s sustainability and engagement strategy. You may ask community members for money, but you also encourage supporters to participate meaningfully in making the site work and making its journalism better. In other words, even if revenue generation is a key component of your proposal, applications that are a pure fundraising play are not a good fit.
  • Your organization is operationally ready to pursue a membership strategy. If your proposal is selected, you should be prepared to begin work in early 2021. MPP sunsets in August 2021, and we are looking to support projects that can make meaningful progress in a six-month time window. In other words, you should be able to say “yes” – or see a pathway to being able to say “yes” – to MPP’s nine questions to ask yourself before pursuing a membership strategy. 
  • Your organization has experience working alongside community members –
    or you are enthusiastic about bringing this way of working to your organization. 
  • You are excited about the prospect of joining a global community of practice and research effort. You should understand that doing so requires a high level of transparency about what’s working and what isn’t, plus a willingness to share that with the journalism industry. Call for proposals: IDRC Strengthening engineering research and training in Africa (CA $900,000 in grant)

IDRC seeks to bridge the gap between the supply of, and demand for, research and training in applied science fields to support direct applications to socioeconomic development at the regional and national scales.

This call for proposals challenges universities as well as public and private stakeholders to develop and implement novel ways of delivering quality and relevant training and research  in engineering and applied science fields.

In particular, this call for expressions of interest targets applicants along two distinct streams:

1. Industrial research hubs: partnerships for a new applied research agenda

Value: up to CA $600,000 over four years

This stream targets research-intensive universities in West and Central Africa who seek to strengthen linkages with public or private firms (or associations, intermediaries, etc.) to develop mutually beneficial research and training activities.

Matching funds (cash or in-kind) are required, either from the collaborating firms, the university itself or from other national, regional or international funding organizations. There is an option for supplementary funding to support collaboration with a Canadian university.

Eligibility criteria:

The lead university must:

  • be based in West or Central Africa;
  • designate principal investigators with sufficient experience, expertise and access to sufficient infrastructure to perform research in a the selected field;
  • have recognized advanced training programs in the selected fields of applied science or engineering, ideally at the Masters’ or PhD level, and ideally involving some existing relationship with public or private firms in this field.

The collaborating companies, associations, or technology intermediaries must have:

  • existing links to the lead university (e.g., through internships, faculty exchange, research collaborations, service contracts, etc.);
  • a strong presence in West or Central Africa, preferably in proximity to the lead university.

2. Rethinking the engineering ‘ecosystem’: new pilots for building capacity in research and advanced training in engineering

Value: up to CA $300,000 over three years

This stream targets research or implementing organizations (or consortia) who aim to inform how national or regional engineering systems operate in sub-Saharan Africa, by piloting new research or training modules, building new knowledge of the ‘ecosystem’ based on these pilots, and developing networks and partnerships that have the potential for scaling-up activities at a regional and a national level.

This call challenges these organizations to find new ways of addressing ‘systemic’ challenges to engineering research and education in Africa. This includes, but is not limited to: inadequate access to small and medium enterprises to relevant research; a lack of exchange opportunities (for students and faculty) with firms; a lack of uptake of research into public and private sectors; and inadequate engineering and licensure processes, among others.

Eligibility criteria:

  • a strong presence, well-developed networks, and experience working in sub-Saharan Africa, preferably in more than one country;
  • experience and expertise in fields such as engineering education, research policy, or higher education policy;
  • experience working with national or regional policymakers, as well as key engineering organizations; and
  • experience in administering funds, preferably on a competitive basis, for research and education.

Application process:

This is a call for expressions of interest in the form of a letter of no more than 1000 words (an additional supporting letter is required from the collaborating institution in the case of Stream 1), in English or in French.

Letters must demonstrate that the applicant meets the eligibility criteria listed in the call document. Applications will be assessed on their clarity and completeness, as well as on the relevance and the soundness of the project they describe.

Selected candidates will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Deadlines and Timelines

  • September 24, 2017: Expressions of interest due
  • October 5, 2017: Results of letters of interest communicated; successful applicants invited to submit full proposals.
  • December 10, 2017: Full proposals due
  • January 12, 2018: Successful candidates notified
