Muhammad Sanusi II Sustainable Development Goals (MSII SDG) Initiative is calling on every teacher across sub-Saharan Africa with innovative educational projects to apply for this year’s MSII SDG Challenge.

Application for Cohort 3 of the MSII SDG Challenge is now open to teachers  who believe that education is the key to innovation and are passionate enough to develop solutions that improve the African education system for the better. This programme is aimed at enabling teachers to develop scalable education projects. Our aim is to catalyze and assist teachers in developing innovative community projects focusing on SDG 4 – Quality Education, and SDG 5 – Gender Equality. The Challenge is open to practicing teachers based anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa providing a platform for exclusive access to mentoring, training, and relevant networking opportunities to make a
lasting impact.

His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II, 14th Emir of Kano & UN Advocate of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in partnership with 1 Million Teachers launched the annual MSII SDG Challenge in 2021. The aim of this challenge is to catalyze and empower teachers in developing innovative community projects focusing on SDG 4 – Quality Education, and SDG 5 – Gender Equality.

The HH MSII SDG Challenge aims for the provision of high-quality, gender-responsive education to students – particularly girls – in the most deprived regions of the world. We do this by empowering teacher-changemakers with the skills, networks and resources they need to lead innovative and impactful community-based projects. The HH MSII SDG Challenge will unleash the vast untapped potential of Africa’s teachers, by combining their on-the-ground expertise with a dynamic, entrepreneurial support system. The Challenge is more than an incubator or an accelerator – it is an ecosystem catalyst. By providing expertise, resources and support for teachers at various stages of their leadership journey, the Challenge will nurture a grassroots movement of teacher-changemakers. 

Benefits

  • Teachers selected to participate in the MSII SDG Challenge will receive an initial grant of $2,000 for
    their projects, go through a comprehensive incubation programme and will be further considered for a
    follow-up grant of up to $10,000 and accelerator opportunity.
  • In addition, all accepted teachers will
    acquire access to the 1 million teachers platform,  a unique platform with access to high-quality
    teaching resources to boost their project and teaching outcomes.

MSII Incubator Program

In the Incubator, you will be provided with in-depth and hands-on skill-building opportunities that will equip you with the foundation to lead your own social venture. You will be exposed to concepts related to leadership and personal mastery, sustainable business model design, and the management of projects, organisations and movements. If selected for Incubation, you will be awarded up to $2,000 USD to support the development of your own lean pilot program.

The Africa Institute Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2024 for scholars ($5,000 grant)

As part of its African Languages and Translation Program, The Africa Institute invites applications to the fourth cohort of the Global Africa Translation Fellowship for the year 2024.

The fellowship welcomes applications from across the Global South for a grant of up to $5,000 to complete translations of works from the African continent and its diaspora, into English or Arabic. This is a non-residential fellowship that allows the recipient scholar to complete the work outside of The Africa Institute (Sharjah, UAE). The aim of the fellowship is to make important texts in African and African Diaspora studies accessible to a wider readership across the world.

The fellowship provides funding in the range of $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the quality and breadth of the project. Selected projects may be retranslations of old, classic texts, previously untranslated works, poetry, prose, or critical theory collections. The project may be a work-in-progress, or a new project feasible for completion within the timeframe of the grant.

Application Requirements

Applications must include:

  •  A two-page CV/résumé including institutional affiliation, educational qualifications, including highest degree received, and key publications/works produced
  •  A two-page narrative explaining the translation to be undertaken during the fellowship period, an explanation of the importance of the work, a justification for a re-translation, if applicable, and proposed dates of completion. The project may be a work-in-progress or a new project that fits within the timeframe of the grant.
  •  A 4–5-page (double-spaced) sample of the original text(s) and translation.
  •  An explanation of the work’s copyright status: If the work is not in the public domain, please include a copy of the copyright notice from the original text, and a letter from the copyright holder stating that English language rights to the work are available.

Submitted applications must include a statement, sample, copyright status (if applicable), and CV, in that order into a single PDF file.

Name the file with the applicant’s name in this format: LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME.pdf. Use the same name in the email subject heading LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME application and send PDF as an email attachment to [email protected].

International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) Kim Wall Memorial Fund 2022 for Journalists ($USD 5,000 Grant)

The IWMF’s Kim Wall Memorial Fund will provide two $5,000 grants to journalists whose work embodies the spirit of Kim’s reporting. The grant will fund women or non-binary reporters covering subculture, broadly defined, and what Kim liked to call “the undercurrents of rebellion.” Kim wanted more women to be out in the world, brushing up against life, and the Kim Wall Memorial Fund honors this legacy.

Eligibility

All applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Affiliated or freelance women or non-binary journalists with three (3) or more years of professional experience working in news media from anywhere in the world. Internships do not count toward professional experience.
  • Applicants must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program. However, reporting may be published in any language.
  • Applicants must be able to show proof of interest from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.
  • Grants will be awarded to cover reporting-related costs including travel, logistics, insurance, visa fees, professional stipends and payments for producers, translators, etc. The IWMF does not cover the cost of equipment purchase or rental and cannot support academic research or research for academic publication.

Application Period

The IWMF is accepting applications from November 9 to December, 16 2021 at 11:59 PM EST via Submittable.

The IWMF cannot consider time-sensitive proposals. 

Applications will be reviewed in January 2022, and applicants will receive a response no later than February 2022. Grantees will be publicly announced on Kim’s birthday, March 23.

Africa No Filter, in partnership with Electric South, Imisi 3D and Meta, invites Extended Reality Creators to apply for grants of up to $30,000 to support the production and development of new content. In a bid to support a thriving XR Ecosystem, Africa No Filter will be commissioning work which uses immersive technology to tell exciting stories about Africa. Grantees will be supported with on-going mentorship and production support by Electric South and will also have the opportunity to showcase their projects in a virtual or in-person showcase.


The programme will provide grants, mentorship, and support VR storytellers to develop new and compelling content about Africa. Future Africa: Telling Stories, Building Worlds is part of Meta’s focus on immersive technologies and ANF’s investment in innovative storytelling that shifts negative stereotypes about Africa.

Requirements:

• Applicant must be at least 18 years old

• Must be living on the continent and be of African descent

• Must have previous experience with  XR content creation and at least 1 completed XR project

• Must have a portfolio of work accessible online

• Proposed project must be completed within 6 months

The 2021 edition of the Global Development Awards Competition will feature two categories:

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (2021)

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) is a competitive research grant program that identifies and funds outstanding research proposals that have a high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for addressing development issues in low and middle-income countries (World Bank definition).

The Global Development Network (GDN) invites researchers from low-income or middle-income countries to submit research proposals within the theme, ‘International trade and the promotion of biodiversity.’

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (2021)

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (MIDP) is a competitive grant program that supports non-profit Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in low or lower-middle-income countries (World Bank definition) to recognize the innovative approach of their projects. The first prize winner is also eligible to compete under the Japan Social Development Fund for an additional grant of up to US$ 200,000 to pilot their innovative work at a larger scale. 

The Global Development Network (GDN) invites non-profit NGOs and CSOs from low and lower-middle-income countries to submit project applications within the following three themes: ‘Universal health coverage and COVID,’ ‘Community-driven, climate-related, disaster risk reduction in rural areas’ and ‘Quality urban infrastructure and community driven governance.’

2021 Nature Research Awards for Driving Global Impact (USD 30,000 grant)

Science is critical in solving global challenges.  In 2021 we invite applications from early career researchers (please see criteria below) working in these areas:

  • Food security, water security and/or energy security – ensuring a long term, sustainable supply of either food, water or energy.
  • Healthcare interventions – the assessment, improvement or promotion of human health.
  • Environmental protection – protection of the natural environment on land and water including the repair of damage.
  • Climate change – slowing climate change and adapting to what’s unavoidable.
  • Sustainable cities – building green, liveable cities that last.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be employed by a university, research institute or any other not-for-profit organisation.
  • Hold a PhD or clinical doctorate, one of which awarded not earlier than 1st January 2006.
  • Lead an independent research group established within the past 5 years as of 1st January 2021.
  • Demonstrate the application, or potential application, of their research to make a positive impact on one of the global challenges above.
  • Dates may be adjusted in the case of maternity leave(s) or other formal leave(s) of absence taken before the application deadline to adjust for the duration of the leave taken.
  • The reference date for calculation of the eligibility period should be the date of commencement of the first independent research project led by the team leader named in the application. In practice everyone who commenced such a position after 31st December 2015 is eligible. This period will be extended in the case of maternity leave(s) or other formal leave(s) of absences taken after the 1st January 2006 and before the application deadline with the duration of the leave taken.

Evaluation criteria

Applications will be assessed by our expert judging panel consisting of staff from Nature Research and independent experts. Panel members will review applications to create a shortlist. The full panel will then meet to discuss the merits of shortlisted applicants and select the winner and two runners up.

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Scientific achievements.
  • Research programme and its potential for scientific impact.
  • Research programme and its potential for impact on the global challenges.

Applications from developing and emerging STEM nations are highly encouraged, so location will be taken into account during the evaluation process.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded to one winner and two runners up.

  • The winner will receive a grant of USD 30,000, coverage on nature.com and on the Award’s website.
  • The two runners up will each receive a grant of USD 10,000 and coverage on nature.com and on the Award’s website.

Shortlisted applicants will also be announced and profiled on the Award’s website.

TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences for individual Scientists (USD 15,000 grant)

Under this scheme, grants are awarded to promising high-level research projects in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics carried out by individual scientists in one of the S&T-lagging countries identified by TWAS.

The TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences was established in response to the needs of researchers in developing countries, particularly those attached to institutions that lack appropriate research facilities. Under this scheme, grants can be awarded for research projects in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics either to individual young researchers, or to research units in the science-and-technology-lagging countries (S&TLC) identified by TWAS, to enable them to purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity.

Programme Details

  • TWAS Research Grants are awarded to high-level promising research projects in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics carried out by individual scientists in the S&T-lagging countries  (S&TLC) identified by TWAS.
  • Research Grants to individual scientists amount to a maximum of USD 15,000.
  • The grants, which are normally provided for a period of 24 months, may be used to purchase scientific equipment, consumables and specialized literature (textbooks and proceedings only). They do not cover salaries of researchers and/or students, field expenses, or travel expenses. In addition, the purchase of laptops, tablets, drones and laboratory animals is not supported.

Eligibility

  • Individual applicants must be nationals of developing countries. They must hold a PhD, be at the beginning of their careers, but already have some research experience. They must hold a position at a university or research institution in one of the S&TLCs and be under 45 years of age.
  • Applicant must at the time of application NOT have an active research grant with TWAS or OWSD Early Career Women Scientists (ECWS) Fellowship.
  • Applications from women scientists and those working in Least Developed Countries are especially encouraged.
  • You must submit a strong Research Proposal, you may find further information on how to wrtire a strong proposal by visiting AuthorAID.
  • Individual scientists who submit a satisfactory final report on a previous grant may apply for a renewal.
  • Please be advised that applicants may apply for only one programme per calendar year in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio. Applicants will not be eligible to visit another institution in that year under the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes. One exception: The head of an institution who invites an external scholar to share his/her expertise under the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes may still apply for another programme.

Agreement

  • If selected, a trilateral written agreement is drawn up between TWAS, the individual grantee and the home institution. The institution undertakes to administer the grant according to the agreement and to provide laboratory space, salaries and other facilities necessary for the project. Equipment, consumables and literature provided for the project through the TWAS Research Grants Programme remain the property of the home institution after the project is completed.
  • In general, the grant funds are kept at TWAS for the purchase of items requested by the grant holder. TWAS places the orders with the supplier(s) upon receipt of proforma invoices submitted by the grant holder in accordance with the approved itemized budget.
  • The agreement will also provide details on how to activate other benefits of the grant such as support for travel for young scientists to attend international scientific meetings, and support for publishing in Open Access journals.
  • Grant holders must submit a final report within one year of receipt of the last purchase.

  • Please note that a researcher may only submit one application at a time and for only one kind of grant (either as an individual applicant, as a research unit, IsDB or the OWSD Early Career Women Scientists (ECWS) Fellowship). Applicants cannot apply for other TWAS programmes i.e. Postdoctoral, Visiting Scholar and Visiting Researcher programme within the same year in order to be present in their home country throughout the duration of the grant.

NGO CSW65 Forum Young Feminist Awards! 2021 for youth-led organizations ($5,000 Grant)

In collaboration with Women Have Wings, the NGO CSW Youth Leaders & Young Professionals is delighted to make available five $5,000 grant awards to youth leaders and young professionals who have a project or an idea to advance gender equality in their region. Top projects will be displayed on the NGO CSW65 Virtual Platform. Winners will be announced on 26 March 2021 during the NGO CSW65 Virtual Forum at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. 

Award:
Five $5,000 grants to youth-led organizations or organizations with projects to advance young feminists’ work. Individual youth leaders (between ages 18 to 40 years old at the time of submission) can be highlighted, but the grants must go to organizations.

Application Criteria:
Organizations must be registered in their country or have a fiscal sponsor who is registered. Priority will be given to young people in the Global South. No US based organizations are eligible. Your application must address one of the following themes.

Project Themes:

  • Advocacy – What is the future of advocacy for gender equality?
    This theme can include projects on gender equality, women in politics and decision making, leadership, governance, development and other advocacy campaigns, planning and implementation of advocacy training sessions as well as creation and distribution of advocacy materials.
  • Grassroots Projects – Projects that advance gender equality at the grassroots that need seed money.
    Any project that is designed to advance gender equality in society, in the workforce, politics, business, human rights, art, sports etc. Proposals for both new and existing projects are accepted if the submission clearly indicates how the grant will be used to implement an idea or increase the impact of the existing project.
  • Technology and Arts – Building platforms on gender issues that amplify youth voices in national and international spaces.
    This could include online platform development and launch projects, such as websites, blogs, apps and other forms of online advocacy or artistic expression that amplifies youth voices and perspectives on gender issues.

Global Network Initiative (GNI) Emerging Voices Fellowship Program 2021 (USD 10,000 grant)

GNI warmly welcomes applications for the next one-year GNI Emerging Voices Fellowship Program. The fellowship program seeks to further online freedom of expression and privacy around the world by facilitating collaboration and conversation among diverse stakeholders. 

Three one-year fellowship grants of $10,000 USD each will be awarded to organizations based in Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa. Fellowships include funding to participate in four GNI Board meetings and networking events and engage in GNI activities, including but not limited to: policy and learning calls on digital rights issues, development of policy analysis papers, and attendance at regional multistakeholder meetings.

Fellows will work with GNI’s diverse membership, including information and communications technology (ICT) companies and human rights and press freedom non-governmental organizations to foster shared learning, advocacy, and contribute their own experience to GNI’s unique multistakeholder platform.

Required Qualifications

GNI welcomes applications from established organizations as well as newcomers to the digital rights space. To be considered, applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Be based in Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, or sub-Saharan Africa. 
  • Demonstrated experience or interest and aptitude for working on freedom of expression and privacy issues in the ICT sector.
  • Ability to attend three in-person meetings (health and travel restrictions permitting) and one remote (call-in) event, as well as preparation calls.
  • Willingness to designate one member of the applying organization to be the main point of contact for this fellowship. 

Recommended Qualifications

In addition to the aforementioned required qualifications, applicants with experience in one or more of GNI’s four policy priorities, should strongly consider applying, these are:

How can technology shield and restore terrestrial ecosystems and freshwater supplies?

SDG 15 aims to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems to benefit, now and in future, from this natural ecosystem-service. This Lead2030 Challenge is specifically focussed on SDG 15 targets:

  • 15.1: By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world.
  • 15.2: Promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation.
  • 15.3: By 2030, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements

Novartis looks forward to supporting SDG 15 by funding a project, which utilises data/digital/novel technologies in order to generate positive action, protect, restore and sustainably use the services provided by natural land ecosystem. The project should address at least one of the following:

  • Freshwater recycling capacity
  • Restoring biodiversity of the ecosystem
  • Deforestation
  • Desertification

The project should deliver quantifiable results and be a long-term sustainable solution. Ideas with an assessable proof of concept would be preferred.

Challenge crtieria

Aligned: Evidently aligned with the SDG 15 challenge. See ‘About’.

Youth-led: Founded by a person aged 18 – 30.

Focused: Well-structured time horizon, identified key stakeholders and beneficiaries, and proposed outcomes that are reasonable and well thought out.

Proven: Readily available, in or past implementation phase.

Impactful: Solutions must have a positive social impact, for example generating employment, or developing skills.

Measurable: Impacts of solutions must have been adequately measured and/or be measurable.

Financially viable: Must be able to achieve efficiency and to survive independently through the resources they generate and/or the investments and donations they attract.

Scalable: Potential to perform as well or better after expanding in scope or size and/or being transported to other regions.

Benefits

The winning solution will receive:

  • A US$50,000 grant from Novartis
  • 12 months of mentorship from a team of Novartis professionals. The mentorship team will work to accelerate your solution based on the needs of your initiative or organisation, such as:
    • Business strategy
    • Best practices for data collection
    • Monitoring and evaluation
    • Product design

The British Council Climate change and COP26 – Open call for creative commissions (£50,000 grant)

The British Council is inviting applications for creative commissions that bring together art, science and digital technology and offer innovative responses to climate change. The commissions will be part of the cultural programme in the build up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), which the UK is hosting in Glasgow in November 2021. 

We are inviting collaborative applications from individuals and organisations in the UK with partners from eligible countries and states overseas. 

You can apply for up to £50,000 to realise your creative idea and we are looking to support up to 20 projects. We want these commissions to stimulate truly global conversations, bringing people from different countries, cultures and communities together to understand each other’s perspectives and to work together on creative responses and solutions to climate change. 

Eligibility Requirements

British Council want to see interdisciplinary and collaborative ways of working through these commissions, for example from individuals or organisations involved in arts, creativity and culture, community and civil society, science and research, education, English language teaching, youth work and more.

Applications must include at least one partner in the UK and one overseas partner from the eligible countries and states listed below:

African Union Youth Envoy Youth Silencing the Gun Award 2020 for young peacebuilders in Africa ( up to $5,000 grant)

Recognizing that over 70% of the African population is below the age of 35, the AUC prioritizes mainstreaming of youth in all thematic areas of Agenda 2063 through their participation and creating opportunities for their development. Key decisions on Youth, Peace and Security are derived from Article 17 of the Africa Youth Charter, adopted by the Assembly in 2006; the dedication of the AU 2017 theme of the year as “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in Youth”; the Continental Framework on Youth, Peace and Security, adopted by the AU-PSC at its 933rd Meeting held on June 23, 2020, as well as the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 (2015) with focus on five pillars of participation, prevention, protection, partnership, disengagement and reintegration and resolution 2419 (2018). These normative frameworks acknowledge the important roles of youth and call for their meaningful participation in all spectrums of peace and security.

The Youth Silencing the Guns Award was created by the AU Office of the Youth Envoy to celebrate, recognise and support young Africans behind impactful peacebuilding initiatives that are building a culture of peace. A total of Six Awards will be issued six categories  

The award seeks to:

  • Identify six young peacebuilders at the forefront of impactful Silencing the Guns initiatives.
  • Raise awareness of and celebrate their initiatives
  • Directly support their initiatives with grants of $2000 up to $5,000

 Award Winners will receive: 

  • Recognition for their work 
  • $2000 up to $5,000 grant funding to support their existing peacebuilding projects
  • Featured at the African Union and partners platforms

CATEGORIES 

  • Building Conflict- Free Africa

The award will go to any young man or woman who has contributed immensely to conflict prevention or resolution in their community/ country/ continent through mediation, negotiation, peacebuilding efforts, education and promoting peace, reconciliation and unity amongst others

  • Silencing Poverty & Hunger

The award will go to any young man or woman who has contributed immensely to reducing poverty and hunger within their community/ country/ continent

  • Silencing Gender-Based Violence

The award will go to any young man or woman whose work helps to reduce the incidence of Gender-Based Violence in their community/ country/ continent, or who work to support victims of GBV

  • Silencing Youth Unemployment

The award will go to any young man or woman, leading advocacy around unemployment in their community/ country/ continent; or contributing to solving the unemployment challenges in their country and creating jobs

  • Silencing Corruption

The award will go to any young man or woman who has campaigned to end corruption in their community/ country/ continent

  • Silencing Climate Crisis

The award will go to any young man or woman who has done tremendous work in calling attention to the climate crisis in their country/continent or doing extensive work to mitigate the impact of climate change in their community/ country/ continent

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Nominee must be aged 15 – 35 by 30th November 2020 (as per African Youth Charter definition of youth)
  • Nominee must be national and living in one of the African Union member states   
  • Nominee must fit in one of the 6 award categories and directly address one of the thematic areas 
  • Nominee’s project must have demonstrated impact in peacebuilding and directly impact to at least 300 people
  • Nominee’s complete contact information provided 
  • Nominee must be committed to report on Monitoring and Evaluation of how the grant/Award supported the work of their projects
  • Nominee’s project must beapolitical in nature and must not be operated for profit

General Requirements

Nominees must have an existing initiative/project. Impact must be demonstrated with quantitative and qualitative forms. 

The project must be able to receive grant funds if Awarded. The projects led by the Nominee must not necessarily be registered as a nonprofit, NGO, or charity organization. Non registered projects will be considered for in kind support.

The Nominee must be the founder, co-founder, or visionary leader responsible for the project success and growth. Volunteers and paid staff who have not played a role in the project founding or vision are not qualified for an Award.

The Nominee’s project team must be youth-led and focused on peacebuilding. Projects led by a substantial number of adults above 35, while wonderful in their own right, do not align with this mission and may be disqualified.

Individuals nominated must have been doing this work with their organization for a minimum of 6 months (at least since the outbreak of the pandemic). Nominees with over six months of work showing innovation adopted to COVID-19 outbreak will be qualified. 

The Nominee must have full knowledge that they are being nominated. We strongly recommend that the person you are nominating and the related project assist you in completing the nomination form.

The Nominee must be available to participate in the Virtual Youth STG Awards Ceremony, if he or she is selected as an Honoree.  

Only one individual from a project can be nominated. If multiple individuals are nominated from the same project, we retain the right to select which Nomination Form/application to review, solely at the Selection Committee discretion.

If the Nominee is selected as a finalist, they must be willing to submit to a full investigation. The Selection Committee will screen and vet all finalists and their projects in a formal review process which substantiates their work. 

Projects will be funded directly through partners in the form of either direct grant distribution or in the form of in kind support with the same value of the grant.

StepUp! AstraZeneca’s Young Health global grants Programme 2020 for youth-focused non-profits (US$10,000 grant)

AstraZeneca’s Young Health global grants programme funds youth-focused non-profits to help them develop and deliver effective health promotion programmes – especially in under-resourced and marginalised communities in low- and middle-income countries.

StepUp!, part of AstraZeneca’s Young Health global grants programme, aims to extend the reach and impact of AstraZeneca’s investment in young people’s health.

It builds on the success of the Young Health Programme and helps NGOs and charitable non-profits engaged in youth-centred health promotion to innovate and scale up their impact, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (health and wellbeing).

Innovation and fresh thinking are required more than ever at this time of COVID-19 pandemic to meet health and wellbeing challenges for young people.

Objectives

  • Have a positive impact on the young people involved in the programmes that we support and the communities that they serve
  • Learn about what really works in youth health promotion
  • Increase wider understanding of health and wellbeing initiatives for young people

And to generate:

  • Case studies and other evidence of promising approaches
  • Opportunities for future collaboration and investment

Grants available

  • StepUp! provides grants of up to US$10,000 to help small, innovative, youth-focused and youth-led non-profits to deliver health promotion messages effectively in under-resourced and marginalised communities worldwide, taking account of the COVID-19 pandemic. 
  • NCD risk behaviours, such as tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, insufficient physical inactivity, and exposure to air pollution, often start in adolescence and go on throughout adult life. Reducing these NCD risk behaviours in youth can improve the lives of young people today, in their future adult lives and those of their children.

Requirements

The fund is open to registered NGOs and non-profit charitable organisations managing youth-focused projects for health promotion or NCD prevention. Organisations must be ‘funding-ready’ and able to provide appropriate documentation to verify their charitable status and financial situation. 

Organisations which have been funded previously by AstraZeneca are welcome to apply, but not for the same project that was previously supported.

What can be funded?

We are seeking grant applications for projects which:

  • Take place in under-resourced and marginalised communities
  • Address the health needs of young people aged 10-30, and/or be youth-led
  • Are focused on health promotion
  • Show innovation in approach, settings or implementation 
  • Can provide evidence at the conclusion of the project of what has been delivered, as well as outcomes and what has been learned
  • Can be completed within 12 months of grant payment (ideally by March 2022).

Priority will be given to projects that:

  • Demonstrate a response to the ‘new normal’ of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Operate in low- or mid- income countries, as defined by the World Bank
  • Are run by non-profits with an annual income of less than US$1 million
  • Utilise technology and digital health solutions
  • Address health disparities
  • Are inclusive, addressing the needs of vulnerable young people and especially those with limited access to education
  • Focus on NCD risk behaviours such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, the harmful use of alcohol, and exposure to air pollution
  • Aim to engage other stakeholders to make a wider difference in the world

The AKU GSMC Media Innovation Centre Innovators-in-Residence Program 2020 for East African Media Startups ($20,000 Grant)

The AKU GSMC Media Innovation Centre, together with its partners DW Akademie, Media Challenge Initiative and Tanzania’s Media Foundation are looking for the brightest media minds from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to join the 2020 Innovators-in-Residence, a 12-month incubation and accelerator program that provides mentorship, training and coaching to selected media innovators in East Africa.

The three winning teams, one from each of the participating countries, will join us for a period of 12 months and receive the following benefits to turn their ideas into successful products.

  • Grant Funding of up to $20,000 .
  • Monthly stipend of $1,000 per team.
  • A physical space in your home country to work and connect with a regional network of game-changers in the media space.
  • Access to relevant technology, including audio and video production equipment.     
  • Expert coaching and mentorship based on the innovator’s needs as well as high-quality training by experienced professionals drawn from journalism and business. 
  • Become a lifetime member of our young and growing community of journalism and media innovators.

Requirements:

  • The AKU GSMC Media Innovation Centre are interested in supporting pre-formed teams of journalists, storytellers, visual artists, data analytics specialists, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, cartoonists, illustrators, coders, programmers and/or animators who will work as a team to create viable solutions to the pressing challenges of the East African media landscape.

The projects can range within the following media challenges, but we are open to any other exciting ideas. Feel free to surprise us!  

  • Community-based or community targeted journalism: Community-based media (radio organizations and news sites) that cover critical societal issues at a grassroots level. Journalists working in rural areas in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are highly encouraged to apply. We want to support ideas that help us answer the following question: How can tailor our community journalism to be more relevant to our local audiences?
  • Youth-targeted journalism: Innovations and start-ups that are producing or intend to produce journalistic content that targets young people. Innovations that address the issues of East African youth and package the content in digital formats that resonate with the youth. We want to answer this question: How can we engage young audiences and local communities?
  • Fact-checking: Innovations that will assist journalists and storytellers to address misinformation and disinformation in East Africa. We are open to projects that answer the following question: How can we address misinformation and disinformation? 
  • Digital journalism: Innovations that focus on delivering high-quality journalism told and packaged in exciting digital-based storytelling formats such as graphics, podcasts, video and other visual forms of storytelling. We are looking for innovative projects that would answer the following question: How can we create meaningful storytelling using new digital tools and methods? 
  • Documentaries or ‘alternative media’: Innovations that focus on retelling journalism in unconventional ways such as documentaries, docu​-series and limited series. We would like to know: How can information be transferred in an engaging and thought-provoking manner?

Eligibility Requirements

  • Media innovators from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Journalists and innovators based in either urban or rural areas are eligible to apply.
  • Innovators working in pre-formed teams. Innovators can only apply in teams of 2-5 members. 
  • Projects in any East African language are welcome to apply.
  • Projects that address journalism and media challenges other than storytelling are welcome. Apps and projects that support journalists in their work are also invited to apply.  
  • Participants must be above the age of 18 years.

The African Leadership University’s Beyond Tourism in Africa Innovation Challenge 2020 (US$10,000 grant)

The Luc Hoffmann Institute, the African Leadership University’s School of Wildlife Conservation and the WWF Regional Office for Africa are launching a global innovation challenge. We aim to discover and incubate new revenue models that do not depend on tourism, but still enable local communities within African countries to derive income from wildlife, manage their natural resources sustainably, and improve their collective wellbeing. Participants have the chance to win a place in the African Leadership University’s incubation programme and access to seed money. 

Objectives of the innovation challenge

  • To discover and incubate new revenue models that do not depend on tourism, but still enable local communities in Africa to derive income from wildlife, manage their natural resources sustainably and improve their collective wellbeing.

Ideas must meet the following criteria for consideration:

  1. Generates value (economic, social and cultural) for local community(ies) in Africa from wildlife or natural resources
  2. Does not rely on tourism to generate revenue
  3. Empowers communities with decision-making power and ensures their rights, dignity and livelihoods are a priority
  4. Demonstrates to be feasible, financially sustainable and potentially scalable
  5. Aims to improve the conditions for wildlife and natural resources.

Requirements

Innovators from around the world are welcome to apply, especially people from non-traditional backgrounds and those with strong ties to rural communities in Africa.

Who: Any individual or team with bold ideas from around the world may apply, but we are especially seeking solutions from within Africa itself, and we will look favourably at applications from within the continent. On the application form, applicants must demonstrate their strong links to the geographic context of their idea.

Age: There is no age limit for applicants. However, to be considered for the ALU incubation programme, the team lead must be at least 18 years old and teams may have a maximum of 3 members.

Language: Submissions must be in English, but we strongly encourage both native and non-native English speakers to apply. No judgements will be made on language proficiency. Please note: the ALU incubation programme offered to selectees is conducted in English. 

Sector: We strongly encourage teams composed of people from different sectors, and particularly from outside the conservation sector. Applicants do not need a history of working on conservation-related projects or ideas.

Benefits:

A place in the ALU’s incubation programme and access to seed money.

  • Up to 15 ideas will be selected. Successful applicants will win a place in the African Leadership University’s 8-month incubation programme, culminating in a public pitch to top investors. The programme commences in February 2021 and will run over eight months. It is a part-time, virtual programme. 
  • The African Leadership University Incubator Programme supports high-potential entrepreneurs with a drive to transform Africa through impactful and ethical ventures. The programme provides access to life-long learning and a community of peers, mentors and potential investors. At the end of the programme, all participants would be expected to successfully launch a venture with the opportunity for potential investment. For this particular cohort, the programme is focused on impactful ideas in the wildlife conservation sector, with entrepreneurs going through an 8-month experience that uses a unique model that can transform their ideas into a viable business. If you apply as a team and your team is successful, a maximum of three team members will be admitted to the programme. 
  • During the incubation programme, participants may receive a grant of up to US$10,000 from the organisers as early seed money.  
  • The programme is set to start in February 2021 and will run over eight months. It is a part-time, virtual programme.

Commonwealth Foundation COVID-19 Special Grants (up to £30,000 grant)

The Foundation’s Grants Programme supports innovative project ideas and approaches that seek to strengthen the ability of civic voices to engage with governments to improve governance and development outcomes through their active participation. In lieu of our annual grants call, we are launching a special grants call in response to the COVID–19 pandemic.  

The purpose of the special grants call is to enable the Foundation to deliver support to Commonwealth civil society organisations in response to COVID-19 quickly, efficiently and in a way that both reflects and advances our broader mission. To that end, the focus will be on supporting national initiatives that aim to engage constructively with government in strengthening relevant institutions, policies and practices as communities and countries seek to recover and rebuild. The Foundation is also aware that the pandemic has created novel and urgent priorities for civil society action and engagement: from the emergence of acute vulnerability among certain groups to the need for insight into how new laws and policies are impacting on different groups of people. Proposals should address such priorities through the lens of participatory governance.  

The call is open to eligible civil society organisations from all Commonwealth Member States. Grants of £10,000 – £30,000 will be awarded for a maximum 12-month duration.

FOCUS AREAS

Applications should relate to one or more aspects of the COVID-19 situation and response. Possible focus areas might include:

  1. Research into, and monitoring of, government and civil society responses to the pandemic that aim to identify gaps, weaknesses and good practices that could be used to inform current practice and future policy: including the impact of laws and policies in general, or in relation to specific groups such as women; workers in the informal economy; migrants and refugees or specific issues such as, for example, gender-based violence and access to treatment
  2. Support to civil society organisations, networks and coalitions to enable more effective engagement with government on development and implementation of policies and plans to address the pandemic in the longer term, or respond to new health emergencies
  3. Promotion of civil society engagement with national government, private sector, and academic institutions to innovate and develop quality products for vulnerable groups that reduce risks associated with pandemics

ACU Gender Grants are awarded annually to member universities to support initiatives that will boost gender equity and equality on campus. The grants can be used for a diverse range of projects, workshops, and events in areas such as:

  • Supporting women in leadership
  • Raising awareness of sexual harassment and developing anti-sexual harassment initiatives
  • Supporting women in science and research
  • Creating effective institutional policies
  • Mainstreaming gender equity into the curriculum

The Grant

  • Grants of up to GBP 1000 are available for staff at ACU member universities to help meet the costs of organising projects that promote gender equity and equality.
  • Grantees are required to submit a short interim report halfway through their project and a comprehensive final report within one month after completing their project.

How to apply

You will need to supply an outline of the project and an action plan, including details of what it involves and how it will address gender equity and equality at your university. The project action plan is requested for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months.

Applications open on 20 August 2020 and close at 11.59 pm BST on 20 September 2020.

Nigeria Impact Startup Relief Facility (NISRF) is an emergency facility designed by a consortium of funding partners to disburse grants to a significant number of existing post-MVP stage high-growth startups who create impact so they remain viable during the COVID-19 crisis. NISRF is designed to support grant applicants for a period of 6 months whose businesses/activities are either being adversely affected or modified in response to COVID-19.

Grant

  • You can access between $5,000 to $20,000.
  • Yes, funding received from the NISRF is 100% equity-free.

Selection Criteria

In order to qualify for this funding, the following criteria have to be met:

1 Be a company operating in Nigeria

2 The company is tackling an urgent social problem

3 The company is post-MVP, revenue-generating, registered with CAC

4 Can demonstrate solid financial health prior to the onset of COVID-19 (USD $60K ARR – 12 months period minimum)

5 The company has already received seed capital

6 Can demonstrate the scale of impact, or potential for future scale

7 Fall in any of these sectors: Agriculture, Critical Infrastructure, Financial Services, Health Care, Education, and with initiatives that target the informal sector.

Impact Amplifier Africa Online Safety Fund 2020 ($10,000 grant)

Over 500 million people have access to the internet in Africa; and although this reflects just under 40% of the population, this level of penetration is 110 times what it was just 20 years ago.  Not only has internet access increased dramatically, but so has smartphone usage, with ownership now at 250 million people.  

  • Identify theft
  • Bullying and harassment
  • Sex trafficking
  • Hate crimes
  • Terrorist recruitment and promotion
  • Mis or disinformation
  • Financial scams

To address these issues, the Africa Online Safety Fund, with support from Google.org, has been established to support innovative existing and new solutions to these challenges.  While not exclusively focused, the Fund will be favouring solutions, which address women and children’s online safety specifically, as they are the most targeted communities in this regard. 

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants can be public benefit organisations, private or from the public sector.  No individual applicants will be considered. 
  • The Fund is open to organisations throughout Africa, but is prioritising Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Senegal, Ethiopia and the Ivory Coast. 
  • Only completed applications will be considered.

FUND MANAGEMENT

Impact Amplifier, a South African based social impact advisory firm will be managing the Fund.  It will be critically supported by ISD, a UK based think and do tank, dedicated to understanding and innovating responses to polarisation, hate and extremism of all forms. 

FUND STRUCTURE

The Africa Online Safety Fund will be awarding grants to organisations that address one or more of the safety issues the internet facilitates. 

There are two categories of funding: Transformative and Catalytic. The Transformative projects are intended to be larger in scale, reach multiple geographies and or potentially large numbers of beneficiaries, and be scalable as a solution. The Catalytic projects are intended to be smaller, targeted, and potentially only locally or culturally specific. The Transformative grants will be a maximum of $100,000 and the Catalytic Grants will be a maximum of $10,000.

A $1,000,000 commitment has been made to address online safety issues in Africa.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application process will be in two stages.  Stage one is a short application form to be completed by all interested organisations.  Click here to apply.

All applicants that are shortlisted will be eligible to complete the second stage of the application process.  The details and requirements of this stage will be provided directly to all shortlisted applicants.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The primary criteria that will be used to select successful applicants, includes:

  • INNOVATION AND REPLICATION – what is the level of novelty in the intervention/service? Can it function as a model for other interventions? Does it replicate other successful online safety interventions from different geographies?
  • SOCIAL IMPACT – what is the scale of the online safety problem being addressed? What is the potential social impact of the intervention?  What is the potential impact if the intervention is scaled beyond the current plan? Can it in fact be ramped up? (Is it cost effective, sustainable, and replicable?)
  • POTENTIAL FOR SUCCESS – how likely is the intervention to achieve its stated goals?
  • MANAGEMENT TEAM – what is the strength and experience of the management team and the precedent set by the team in terms of cooperation, achieving goals, and beneficiaries served? 
  • FINANCIAL EFFICIENCY – is the funding requested an efficient use of resources? How does the amount requested, scope of the problem to be addressed, and beneficiaries to be reached compare to other applicants?
  • SUSTAINABILITY – can the intervention planned become financially sustainable beyond this grant?  If so, how and to what scale?

TIMING

The first phase of the application process is open from 17 July to 21 August.  The shortlisted applicants will be announced by 7 September.   The finalists will be selected by 8 October, 2020.

African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) World AIDS Day Grants 2020 (US$2,000 grant)

AWDF invite applications for the award of grants to African women’s rights organisations and groups to support activities that promote the wellbeing of women. Every year, AWDF supports innovative women’s rights groups and organisations under the small grants initiative, to coordinate activities around World AIDS Day and 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based violence.

This year, under this initiative, AWDF will focus on education and awareness on preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG) as well as promoting women’s access to comprehensive mental health and wellness services.

For World AIDS Day 2020, AWDF is awarding grants to African women’s rights organisations and groups to support activities that support mental health and emotional wellbeing for women living with HIV and AIDS. AWDF encourage innovative projects that will involve women living with HIV and AIDS in their leadership, design and implementation, and work. AWDF also prioritise activities that focus on women living in hard to reach areas and difficult circumstances.

AWDF particularly welcome applications from organisations of women living with HIV and AIDS, women’s organisations working on improving the mental health of women, and from young women’s groups. AWDF encourages innovation- so do send in your creative ideas! Projects may include activities that;

  • Use technology, arts, culture and sports to create awareness and elevate voices of African women around HIV and AIDS and women’s mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Create collective spaces for care that affirm and build the confidence of women living with HIV and AIDS to speak out about their mental and emotional health
  • Increase the knowledge of women and young women living with HIV and AIDS to take positive measures to support emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • Set the agenda for addressing the drivers causing mental health illnesses in women living with HIV and AIDS
  • Educate key stakeholders and the community on the challenges faced by women living with HIV and AIDS in relation to their mental and emotional health
  • Hold duty bearers accountable for addressing HIV and AIDS and mental health and emotional wellbeing issues
  • Raise awareness of programme implementers and policymakers about the barriers in accessing mental health services by women and young women living with HIV and AIDS and other women managing mental health conditions

Eligibility Criteria
Applicant Organisation:
• Must have been in existence for at least 3 years
• Must be duly registered, at least with its local government structure
• Must be led by a woman and have a focus on Women’s Rights
• Must have the needed organizational structures for effective implementation of the project
• Must have an appreciable financial management system to properly account for funds received
• Must be capable of reporting back on the outcomes of the project
• Must be highly recommended by a donor agency, a grantee or partner of AWDF, a well-known women’s rights organisation or the local government office
• Must complete the necessary application forms
• Must have an annual budget of not more than $100,000

Grant Size & Period

– The grant size is a US$2,000. Therefore, eligible projects should have a budget of not more than US$2,000 to be supported by AWDF funds. The grant period will be for 4 months from the date of award.

MIT Solve’s Health Security & Pandemics Challenge 2020 ($10,000 grant)

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the latest in a series of infectious disease emergencies, including cholera, Ebola, SARS, Chikungunya, HIV/AIDS, and influenza. While scientists and drug developers, with support from governments and multilateral organizations, have been rushing to produce, test, and deliver vaccines and treatments, tech innovators also have a crucial role to play, both in the near term and to prevent and mitigate future disease outbreaks.

In the near term, we need improved solutions for prevention, accurate detection, and rapid response. MIT Solve is seeking tech innovations that can slow and track the spread of an emerging outbreak, for example by improving individual hygiene, developing low-cost rapid diagnostics, analyzing data that informs decision making, and providing tools that support and protect health workers.

Prizes – Solver Funding
