Rest of World Labor x Tech Fellowship 2024 for Journalists worldwide (Fully Funded)

by OFA

Application Deadline: October 4, 2024.

Rest of World is excited to announce a new opportunity for reporters native to regions outside the West who want to produce deeply reported work on how tech impacts labor and workers around the world. With underwriting from the Ford Foundation, Rest of World is launching the second iteration of its Labor x Tech reporting initiative to deepen our understanding of how new technologies and tech companies are redefining the meaning of labor.

Requirements

  • Rest of World is looking for 12 reporters from around the world to produce a series of stories at the intersection of tech and labor over the course of 12 months.
  • The reporters will become part of Rest of World’s Labor x Tech Contributor Network, which is designed to engage international journalists who have a basic understanding of their local tech and business landscape.
  • The contributors will work directly with the Labor x Tech editor to produce regular reporting as well as participate in larger cross-regional projects, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Rest of World is looking for journalists from around the world but are particularly interested in contributors from Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Colombia, and Brazil.

Benefits

  • Contributors will be expected to publish four stories over the course of the year, running from November 1, 2024, to October 31, 2025, and will be paid a total of $5,000 for the four stories.
  • Rest of World will cover all costs related to the reporting of the stories, including travel costs.

Application Requirements

If you’re interested in joining the Rest of World Labor x Tech Reporting Network, please send us an email at [email protected] with “Labor x Tech Reporting Network” in the subject line.

Please attach your resume and in your email body, provide the following:

  • Tell us in 300-350 words what’s the most compelling issue around tech workers in your community, and why you think it is worth pursuing for a story. The more specific you can be the better. We’re looking for ideas you are eager to jump into reporting on Day 1.
  • Share two relevant stories you’ve published recently that you’re particularly proud of. Tell us what role you played in shaping the story, what obstacles you might have overcome, and how you addressed them.
