ChangemakerXchange Climate Action Summit 2022 for MENA changemakers

To address the triple planetary crisis (climate change, biodiversity loss, and air pollution) — likely the biggest existential threat humanity has ever encountered — we need intersectional and coordinated collaboration on a massive scale.

ChangemakerXchange is excited to launch a global intersectional climate action programme that supports the world’s leading climate action changemakers and activists from different regions. The ultimate goal is to help the youth climate movement become even more connected, collaborative, and impactful.

The Summit

There will be three in-person summits and a follow-up community and capacity-building programme in Europe, MENA, and North America in 2022.

The Climate Action Summit in MENA in 2022 is supported by SAP.
Participants will also get the chance to be part of a unique online capacity-building programme and be connected with pro-bono support from SAP employees.

Selection Criteria

Each summit has its own detailed selection criteria, but the following is the general rule for all of them:

Country: You must come from or be currently living in one of the eligible countries.
Age: You must be aged 18–35.
Role: You are the founder/co-founder, leader/co-leader, manager/co-manager (or hold an influential position with decision-making power, e.g. intrapreneur) of a social/environmental venture/organisation/community which is up and running and addresses the climate, biodiversity, and air pollution crises.
Language: You must have a command of English which is strong enough to participate in small group conversations and collaborate with international changemakers.

Cost:

Participants are asked to cover their own transportation costs to Egypt.
ChangemakerXchange will cover all other costs associated with the summit, such as: accommodation, catering, local transportation, room hire, equipment & material, COVID-19 rapid tests, FFP2 masks, facilitation & hosting compensation, programme manager compensation, carbon emissions offsetting derived from the local hosting, post-summit capacity-building programme, post-summit community engagement activities, etc.

Programme Details:

The programme starts with regional summits (cohorts), each convening 15–25 young changemakers in intensive 5-day gatherings. These gatherings take place in beautiful locations deep in nature and are designed to forge deep connections between participants, foster wellbeing, enable peer learning and set the ground for meaningful collaborations to emerge.
After the summit, the young changemakers are invited to join a tailored online global capacity-building programme, that brings together members from each region. This multi-module and interactive programme will include practical sessions for young changemakers such as preventing burnout, fundraising & finances and system change.
Finally, the young changemakers become lifelong members of the thriving global ChangemakerXchange community, which currently counts close to 1,000 social innovators from 120+ countries. As part of the community, members get access to a regular and dynamic portfolio of opportunities to connect, learn and co-create.

MINDS North and West Africa Regional Civic Education Workshop 2016 in Elections and Governance – Dakar, Senegal (Fully Funded)

Applications for the Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) North and West Africa Regional Civic Education Workshop 2016 in Elections and Governance are now open.

The Mandela Institute for Development Studies hosts regional training workshops in Civic Education on Elections and Governance across the continent. The aim of the workshops is to create awareness, enhance knowledge and develop relevant skills in electoral and governance processes and leadership among participants, in order for them to effectively communicate and apply them in influencing and mobilizing other youth to actively participate in the processes and other community and national development activities.

Eligibility Requirements:

The North and West Africa Civic Education workshop will take place in April 2016.
The workshop is open to individuals between the ages of 18 and 45 who are from ‎Algeria‬, Benin‬, ‪‎Burkina Faso‬, ‪‎Cameroon‬, ‪Cape Verde‬, ‪‎Chad‬, ‪Cote‬ d’Ivoire, ‪Egypt‬, ‪Equatorial‬ ‪Guinea‬, ‪Gabon‬, ‪Gambia‬, ‪Ghana‬, Guinea ‪Bissau‬, GuineaConakry, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal, SierraLeone, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia or Western Sahara.
The workshop is fully funded.

Successful applicants will receive further correspondence from MINDS by Friday the 11th of March 2016.

Cultures of Resistance Scholarships 2016 for Study in SOAS, University of London (£25,500 Worth)

Thanks to a collaboration between the Cultures of Resistance Network, the SOAS Students’ Union, International Students’ House and the American Friends of SOAS (AFSOAS), two postgraduate scholarships are available in 2016-17 at SOAS, University of London.

Worth

Each scholarship is valued at £25,500 in total, funded by Cultures of Resistance and the SOAS Students’ Union. Fees will be deducted from this amount and the remainder will be used toward maintenance.
In addition, each scholar will benefit from free accommodation at International Student House (ISH) and some food vouchers to be spent in the ISH restaurant.

Candidates must hold (or be expected to obtain) a good honours degree, preferably first class, from a UK institution or overseas equivalent.
Candidates should describe in their personal statement of their admission application:

how the political situation in your home country, especially violent conflict, war, poverty, and/or military occupation, has shaped your experiences and ambitions in life.
how these experiences have affected your interest in human rights, social justice, and grassroots democracy.
what academic and social issues you plan to explore during your studies at SOAS.
what you hope to do upon completion of your program at SOAS.
what the most pressing problems are in your home country and how the pursuit of education at SOAS in your chosen field would promote human rights, social justice, equality, and the enrichment of civil society in your home country.

Candidates must have an offer of admission to pursue a full time eligible programme by the scholarship closing date.
Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2016. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.

The scholarships will benefit people from countries that have been affected by wars and extreme poverty. This scholarship embodies the values of the Cultures of Resistance Network, which seeks to empower and enrich communities – especially those that have been affected by armed conflict – through the promotion of human rights, justice for victims of war crimes and the enrichment of civil society and robust grassroots democracy.

2016 OWSD Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa & Least Developed Countries .

The OWSD Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South. The Fellowship is offered to women scientists to pursue postgraduate research in a field of the natural sciences.

This fellowship programme is for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa or Least Developed Countries (LDCs) who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a doctorate degree at a centre of excellence in the South outside their own country.

With funds generously provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), OWSD has instituted a fellowship programme for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a PhD, at centres of excellence in the South (developing countries), outside their own country.

Eligibility Requirements:

Open to qualified women science graduates from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (see list below).
If applicants are over 40 years of age, they should include a brief explanation of why their research career has been delayed.
The minimum qualification is an MSc degree (or equivalent), or an outstanding BSc honours degree in the natural sciences, engineering or information technology disciplines (see list below).
Host institutions must be located in a developing country. This must be a different country from the applicant’s home country.
Applicants must provide a preliminary acceptance letter from at least one host institute. The letter must be prepared based on the sample on page 10 and be signed by the head of department, potential host supervisor or postgraduate studies coordinator.
The application will be evaluated more favourably if the preliminary acceptance letter is supported by a letter of commitment from the prospective host supervisor, describing why the host institute is appropriate for the subject of study and confirming the supervisor’s interest in working with the student.
Students from eligible countries already enrolled on a PhD programme in their home country can apply for the sandwich option. This gives them access to expertise and resources that might not be available at the home institute.
Applicants already on site in the host country will not be considered eligible since this implies that they have already secured sufficient funding for their studies.
The applicant must be willing to return to her own country after completion of the fellowship.
Accompanying persons are not eligible for support.

Eligible Scientific Fields:

Agricultural Sciences; Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology; Biological Systems and Organisms; Medical and Health Sciences; Neurosciences; Chemical Sciences; Engineering Sciences; Information Technology; Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences; Mathematical Sciences; Physics

Fellowship Worth:

The fellowship is offered to carry out postgraduate research in the natural, engineering and information technology sciences. Each fellowship will be offered for up to three years and will cover the following:

Travel to and from the host institute;
A monthly allowance to cover accommodation and meals while in the host country;
Study fees (including tuition and registration fees);
Visa expenses;
A yearly medical insurance contribution;
A lump sum allowance to attend international conferences during the period of the fellowship;
On a competitive basis, attending of scientific communication and proposal writing workshop; and
On a competitive basis, attending the Fifth OWSD General Assembly and International Conference scheduled for 2016.
