The Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Memorial Scholarship Fund announces Scholarships for the 2018/19 academic year. The Fund grants Scholarships to best female Tanzanian students to pursue Undergraduate studies in Mathematics and Science in Tanzania’s accredited universities.
It is also partly used to sponsor both male and female Tanzanians top students to pursue undergraduate studies in Economics, Information Technology, Accounting and Finance as well as best students intending to pursue Master’s programmes in those fields.
The primary objective of the Fund is to promote interest and excellence in Mathematics and Science courses among female students in the United Republic of Tanzania.
The Scholarships are granted on academic merit and based on a rigorous selection process.
Successful applicants are granted full scholarship which covers all university direct cost (tuition fees etc.) and student direct costs (meal, accommodation, book and stationery allowance, field practical training, special faculty requirement etc.) as specified in the respective institutions ‘costs structure including a lap top computer.
1. Undergraduate Degree Programmes (4 Scholarships)
The Undergraduate Scholarships are granted to top performers at the level of the
Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (ACSEE) to pursue Undergraduate degree programmes in two categories:
Category A: Science and Mathematics Studies (Female Students only)
Category B: Information Technology, Economics, Accounting and Finance Studies (Male and Female Students)
The Fund will obtain the list of the 2018 ACSEE top ten (10) students from the National
Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) and the said Scholarship will be granted to qualified candidates
Master’s Degree Programmes ( 2 Scholarships)
  • The Scholarships are open to both female and male best students who are to enrol in Master’s degree programmes in the fields of Mathematics, Science, Economics, Information Technology, Accounting and Finance.
Requirements:
a) Applicant must be a Tanzanian citizen.
b) Applicant must have obtained First Class or an Upper Second Class (honours) in the Bachelor
degree with a minimum GPA of 4.0 from an accredited university within the United Republic of Tanzania.
c) Applicant must not be more than thirty-five years of age and should have completed Bachelor’s degree in studies related to Mathematics, Science, Economics, Information Technology, Accounting or Finance.
d) Applicant must have applied/be admitted to a full time Master’s degree programme in an
accredited university within the United Republic of Tanzania. The programme should commence
in 2018/2019 academic year in any of the following fields: Mathematics, Science, Economics, Information Technology, Accounting or Finance.

  • Applicants are required to complete Scholarship Application Forms which can be accessed on the BOT website: www.bot.go.tz.
  • Printed forms can be obtained from the

DAAD/African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Tanzania Postdoc Fellowship 2018

Applications are now open for a postdoctoral fellowship at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Tanzania. The DAAD funds this fellowship and welcomes applications from applicants who have recently obtained a PhD in Mathematics.

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), as a publicly funded, self-governing organisation of the institutions of higher education in Germany, promotes international academic exchange as well as educational co-operation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programmes.

The purpose of the programme is to provide opportunities to post-doctoral mathematicians under the guidance of AIMS, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences. As a self-governing non-profit trust, which is supported by several universities, AIMS offers postgraduate Programmes to talented students from the African continent. In a similar way, AIMS is extending its offer to Masters and Doctoral Degree Programme in mathematical sciences meeting the need for highly qualified scientists in Africa.

Requirements:

Applicants have to

  • have completed their PhD degree not more than six years ago.
  • be current or prospective teaching or research staff at a university or research institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • be invited by AIMS.
  • preferably be nationals of an African country.

What can be funded?

  • The scholarship at AIMS Tanzania is available in the following field:
    Mathematics.
  • The fellowship is tenable at AIMS Tanzania.

Duration of the funding

The awards are tenable for a period of up to two years.

Value

The fellowship covers:

  • A flat-rate travel allowance: The flat rate travel allowance will be specified in the letter of award
  • A monthly research allowance of 100 EUR
  • A monthly instalment of 1000 EUR
  • If a health insurance is compulsory for work and/or visa regulations DAAD will accept the costs for a standard tariff upon submission of receipt of paid invoice.

The scholarship is designed as a subsidy to the scholar’s current salary / study leave income.

NRGInstitute Tanzania Resource Governance Reporting Fellowship 2018 for mid-career journalists (Funded)

The Tanzania program of the Natural Resource Governance Institute in partnership with Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) is accepting applications for its 2018 Resource Governance Reporting Fellowship.

The NRGI fellowship is uniquely designed to support up to three senior or mid-career journalists to deepen their mastery of oil, gas and mining reporting through a tailored professional capacity development program over a nine-month period. Fellows will have the opportunity to engage in a range of flexible formal and informal learning opportunities including exclusive short seminars by leaders in the oil, gas and mining fields, financial and technical support for three extractives stories, attendance at global media events, and participation in a regional resource governance training event. A project advisor, along with Media Council of Tanzania and NRGI staff, will support fellows throughout the duration of the fellowship, and NRGI will provide fellows’ access to sector experts.

At the end of the term, fellows will be better equipped to analyze information about the oil, gas and mining sectors and transform that analysis into impactful stories. The fellowship will support reporters as they enhance their ability to spotlight different voices and perspectives; use multiple sources; report ethically and accountably on complex issues such as state-owned enterprise governance; reference and analyze primary oil, gas and mining documents; access and evaluate industry-related data; and reflect international best practices.

Fellows will be selected based on their interest in deepening their capacity and developing stories around four core topics:

  1. The opportunities and challenges for utilizing Tanzania’s offshore gas;
  2. Ensuring a fair share from the mining sector while continuing to attract investment
  3. Balanced and accurate descriptions of the major governance problems facing the industry
  4. Governance of state-owned oil and mining companies

Eligibility criteria

Overall, the fundamental attributes of a fellow will be self-driven, pro-active engagement and the ability to follow through on commitments and to complete the program with minimal supervision.  Others are:

  • At least five years of continuous journalism experience
  • Proven record of reporting on oil, gas and mining topics (in English or Swahili)
  • Advanced journalism skills including the ability to apply more sophisticated journalism techniques (e.g., data analysis, document analysis, multimedia journalism and podcast production)
  • Newsroom leadership potential
  • Previous participation in an NRGI training is an added advantage
  • Willingness and ability to commit to the demands of the fellowship
  • The explicit support of their media organization to pursue all aspects of this fellowship
  • Women are particularly encouraged to apply

Fellowship requirements

  • Fellows will produce three stories—spending 2 to 3 months on each—over the course of the nine-month fellowship.
  • Fellows will attend the fellowship orientation, trainings and events as planned.
  • Fellows will contribute to industry-related online forums and be prepared to present their fellowship experience to NRGI.
  • Fellows are expected to comply with highest journalism ethics internationally, as well as those outlined in Tanzanian law and regulations, such as the Media Services Act (2016), the Cybercrime Act (2015) and Online Publishing Regulations (2018).
  • Fellows will commit to regular, defined communication with the project editor.
  • Fellows are required to comply with monitoring and evaluation processes, such as the logging of stories written.
  • Fellows will communicate with project editor and NRGI staff online or in person at mutually agreed times.
  • NRGI does not exert editorial control over the content published by the fellows.

Fellowship benefits*

  • NRGI will provide full sponsorship to fellows to participate in The African Investigative Journalism Conference at Wits University, Johannesburg, South Africa (October 29-31, 2018) or a similar conference.
  • NRGI will provide full sponsorship to fellows to participate in one NRGI regional course, such as the Anglophone Africa Regional Extractive Industries Knowledge Hub Course.
  • Fellows will engage in a range of flexible formal and informal learning opportunities including exclusive short seminars by leaders in the oil, gas and mining fields.
  • Fellows will have access to a project editor, an NRGI staff, and access to sector experts throughout the duration of the fellowship.
  • Fellows will have the opportunity to apply for funding for different information resources related to the resource sector (e.g., journals, databases, libraries, publications, forums).
  • Fellows have the opportunity to apply for up to $750 per story to cover reporting costs with an itemized budget attributed to each story in advance of payment for fellows to complete their projects over the course of the fellowship.
  • Fellows will return to their media organizations better equipped to report the oil, gas and mining sectors at a more technical and informed level and to share new knowledge with their colleagues.

  • Links to two previously published stories, in any format, that address the oil, gas and mining sectors in Tanzania (in English or Swahili)
  • Three story proposals for analysis and investigation of issues outlined in the proposal throughout the fellowship period
  • A statement of purpose, no longer than 500 words, which explains why you are applying for the fellowship and your interest in the priority reform topics or issues chosen
  • A signed consent form from an editor/supervisor and/or employer that confirms you will be given support and time to fulfill the requirements of the fellowship (unless operating as a freelancer)
  • A one-paged CV or resume.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit a plan for three major reporting projects under the three focus areas and to further discuss their application with NRGI staff and an external advisor.

British Council new Art new Audiences (nAnA) 2018 for artists & arts organisations from East Africa ( £30,000 Grant)

new Art new Audiences (nAnA) is an annual open call for 18 to 35-year-old artists, arts organisations, and art collectives from cities within England; Ethiopia; Kenya; Northern Ireland; Rwanda; Scotland; South Sudan; Sudan; Tanzania; Uganda; and Wales. nAnA gives an opportunity for artists from these cities to create new art together, and to showcase this art to audiences across these countries.

nAnA2018 Key Information:

  • nAnA will fund 5 new projects in 2018;

World Bank ACE II Masters Scholarship Program 2018 for young African Female students (Fully Funded)

The World Bank is partnering with eight Governments in Eastern and Southern Africa in an innovative project with the aim of improving the quality of training and research in higher education, and reducing the skill gaps in key development priority areas. The Eastern and Southern Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence (ACE II) Project supports the governments of Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia in strengthening selected African Centers of Excellence (ACEs) to deliver quality post-graduate education and build collaborative research capacity in the following priority areas: (i) Industry, (ii) Agriculture, (iii) Health, (iv) Education, and (v) Applied Statistics.

The ACE II Project implements three components, namely (i) strengthening the 24 higher
education institutions into regional ACEs in Eastern and Southern Africa in a set of defined regional priority areas (US$ 140 million); (ii) providing capacity building support to these ACEs through regional activities (US$3 million); and (iii) supporting coordination and management of the implementation of components (i) and (ii) (US$5 million).

To encourage the participation of young African female students at postgraduate level, IUCEA wishes to implement a Fellowships Program aimed at providing competitive Masters Scholarships to academically deserving future talents to promote regional female student mobility. Eligible female applicants who can demonstrate interest and ability in the priority areas are encouraged to apply for the 30 Fellowships available for the 2018/2019 academic year.
Eligibility Requirements:
In order to be eligible for this Fellowship, the applicant must:
i) be a female national of one of ACE II participating countries ( Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi,
Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia) or Burundi
ii) be under the age of thirty five (35) years
iii) be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree from a reputable university in the relevant field, at the level of Upper Second Class Honours
iv) have been admitted in any of the 24 ACEs to study full-time in any of the priority disciplines
of the ACE II Project:
(i) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) or Industry,
(ii) Agriculture,
(iii) Health,
(iv) Education, and (v) Applied Statistics;
v) have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement as evidenced by academic transcripts, and academic awards,if any.
The Fellowship Award
The provided financial support for each Fellowship Program will cover:
i) University tuition fees: Approximately USD 3,000 per year (payable directly to the Host University according to an official invoice)
ii) Stipend: USD 800 per month to support living expenses such as housing, food, utilities, local
transportation, medication and settlement expenses
iii) Research: USD 4,800 to support student research, payable upon approval of research proposal
iv) Allowance: USD 2,000 one-off allowance to cover visa, laptop andbooks
v) Air ticket: A round-trip economy fare for the most direct route between the beneficiary’s home country and the study destination of Host University
Note: Candidates must complete all academic work within the specified period of the programme as the scholarship cannot be extended beyond a maximum of 24 months

Commonwealth Medical Fellowships 2018 for Mid-Career Medical Professionals to Study in the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)

Commonwealth Medical Fellowships are for mid-career medical staff from low and middle income countries, to enhance their clinical skills.

Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Medical Fellowships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development. These fellowships are offered under the second of the CSC’s six themes:

Fellowship Worth

Each fellowship provides:
  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed)
  • Research support grant, payable to your host university hospital
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,627 per month, or £2,019 per month for those at university hospitals in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2017-2018 levels)
  • Reimbursement of the fee for a single English language test and the fee for General Medical Council (GMC) registration
  • Warm clothing allowance
  • Study travel grant towards the costs of approved travel within the UK
  • If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £457 per month for the first child, and £112 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK

School of Data’s 2018 Fellowship Programme for data-literacy practitioners/enthusiasts ($1000 USD per month stipend)

School of Data is inviting journalists, data scientists, civil society advocates and anyone interested in advancing data literacy to apply for its 2018 Fellowship Programme, which will run from May 2018 to January 2019. 8 positions are open, 1 in each of the following countries: Bolivia, Guatemala, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, The Philippines. The Fellowship

Fellowships are nine-month placements with School of Data for data-literacy practitioners or enthusiasts. During this time, Fellows work alongside School of Data to build an individual programme that will make use of both the collective experience of School of Data’s network to help Fellows gain new skills, and the knowledge that Fellows bring along with them, be it about a topic, a community or specific data literacy challenges.

Similarly to previous years, our aim with the Fellowship programme is to increase awareness of data literacy and build communities who together, can use data literacy skills to make the change they want to see in the world.

The 2018 Fellowship will continue the work in the thematic approach pioneered by the 2016 class. As a result, we will be prioritising candidates who:

  • possess experience in, and enthusiasm for, a specific area of data literacy training
  • can demonstrate links with an organisation practising in this defined area and/or links with an established network operating in the field

The School of Data is looking for engaged individuals who already have in-depth knowledge of a given sector or specific skillsets that can be applied to this year’s focus topics.. This will help Fellows get off to a running start and achieve the most during their time with School of Data: nine months fly by!

The areas of focus in 2018

The School of Data have partnered with Hivos and NRGI to work on the following themes: Procurement and data in the extractives industry (oil, mining, gas). These amazing partner organisations will provide Fellows with guidance, mentorship and expertise in their respective domains.

Ghana

The Fellowship in Ghana with be focused on extractives Data through the Media Development Programme at NRGI. For this position, School of Data is looking for someone with: an interest in supporting or working within the civil society sector, experience working with financial (or related) data for analysis experience as a trainer and/or community builder, interest and/or experience in the extractives sector, demonstrated skills as a data storyteller or journalist

Malawi

The Fellowship in Malawi will be focused on public procurement data through the Open Contracting Programme. For this position, School of Data is looking for someone with: experience with delivering technical and data-driven projects, experience with facilitating training activities, experience with data collection projects, basic understanding of the public procurement process

Kenya

The Fellowship in Kenya will be focused on public procurement data through the Open Contracting Programme. For this position, School of Data is looking for someone with: experience with delivering data-driven projects, experience with user research and data storytelling, experience with explaining complex topics to varied audiences. Candidates with the following optional interests and experience will be appreciated: interest in or experience with supporting civic projects and civil society organisations, experience with facilitating training activities.

Tanzania

The Fellowship in Tanzania will be focused on public procurement data through the Open Contracting Programme. Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme 2018/2019 for study in Poland (Fully Funded)

The Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme, implemented as part of the “Polish Aid” programme, is addressed to the nationals of the following developing countries: Angola, Chile, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria, Palestine, Peru, The Republic of South Africa, The Philippines, Senegal, Tanzania, and Vietnam. The aim of the Programme is to support the socio-economic development of the above-mentioned countries.

The Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme enables free education as part of a second cycle programme of studies at a higher education institution supervised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (Polish: Ministerstwo Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego – MNiSW) in the following areas of study: sciences, natural sciences, technical sciences, agricultural, forestry and veterinary sciences.

Students from 17 developing countries (Angola, Chile, Ethiopia, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Colombia, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria, Palestine, Peru, South Africa, Senegal, Tanzania, and Vietnam) can now apply to the Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eligible to apply are citizens of the countries listed above who:

  • are graduates of first-cycle programmes (completed not earlier than in 2014) or last-year students of first-cycle programmes in the 2017/2018 academic year in such fields as exact sciences, natural sciences, technology, agriculture, forestry and veterinary medicine;
  • do not have a Master’s or engineer’s degree;
  • have at least a B2-level certificate in English;
  • are not graduates of Polish universities.

Candidates choose the university and academic programme they want to enrol on from among those offered by Polish higher education institutions. The studies are preceded by a one-year course that will prepare students for their stay in Poland (also subject to scholarship conditions).

Benefits:

The Programme offers tuition-free education at second-cycle programmes in Poland, and a monthly bursary of PLN 1,500 to cover living expenses to be disbursed by the Polish National Agency for Student Exchange.

Application Procedure:

Candidates are selected on the basis of a competitive procedure, based on the quality assessment of applications carried out by reviewers of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange who are academics working in higher education institutions.

Candidates independently choose a higher education institution and degree programme from among the educational offers of Polish public higher education institutions. Achieving Sustainable Urban Water and Sanitation services for everyone is one of the global Sustainable Development Goals to be reached by 2030. To meet this target we need to be creative, think and act out of the box, and use a much greater range of practical solutions. And above all it will require commitment and hard work by change agents, professional organisations and communities at the local level. This programme will contribute knowledge and skills that will make a difference in the local context at city-level, and in the long run also for the World.

Sida has commissioned NIRAS and WaterAid to jointly implement an advanced international training programme on Sustainable Urban Water and Sanitation – Integrated Processes. We are seeking collaborative organisations active in urban water and sanitation, ready to engage in processes for change and to invest in capable and engaged employees as potential change agents. We trust that you will find the programme interesting and hereby invite you to nominate candidates.

Objectives

This International Training Programme’s overarching objective is to contribute to planning and implementation for more sustainable urban water and sanitation services, where the rights, needs and demands of  all citizens, including those of marginalised groups, are taken into account.

The term sustainability addresses environmental, social and economic long-term factors. Sustainability can be achieved only through an increased awareness of  the need for integrated approaches and for long-term systems and by supporting key organisations in their processes for such a change.

Target Group

Candidates may be nominated by authorities, institutions, universities, NGOs, water utilities or other private companies active in the water and sanitation sector.

The programme is primarily targeting organisations, not individuals, and efforts will be made to establish long-term relationships with key organisations. Such collaborative organisations should be willing to commit themselves to participation over several years and to cooperate with other organisations in the programme. Capacity and interest to drive change processes to achieve their long-term goals, and a certain level of  influence on the water and sanitation sector, is a prerequisite to become a collaborative organisation. Candidates from collaborative organisations may be prioritised.

Applicants to the programme should:

  • hold a key position in their organisation, with influence on a strategic level
  • have the engagement and power to initiate and drive change processes;
  • hold a relevant academic degree; and
  • be available and motivated for active participation through the whole training programme.

Contents

The programme will address the following four priority themes:

Systems that Deliver – How to develop and transform systems to realize the human right to water and sanitation, and what it takes in terms of addressing governance, standards, decision-making processes, finance, and inclusion of marginalised groups.

Sustainable Solutions – How to find approaches, practices and technology that is contributing to more sustainable service provision, as use and reuse of water, innovative sanitation solutions and new methods of improving hygiene practices.

Integrated Approaches – How to work holistically with urban development, manage conflicting goals, increase synergies across sectors and spur collaboration between organisations and institutions at city-level and beyond.

Organisational Change – How to work as a change agent and manage change processes that will strengthen the organization’s ability to support and deliver imporved water, sanitation and hygiene activities and services.

Invited countries and areas:

Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

To promote actual collaboration and integration between participants in their national working context, the programme aims to gather organisations operating in the same geographical area. The programme is therefore focusing on the following areas:

Kenya – Nakuru

Rwanda – Eastern Province

Tanzania – Temke, Dar es Salaam

Uganda – Kampala

Zambia – Ndola

Organisations working in other areas than the above, are also welcome to nominate candidates, but should be aware of  the priority given to the selected areas.

Pollicy 2018 DATAStrong program for civil society in East Africa (Fully Funded to Kampala, Uganda)

Together with Innovation for Change, a demand-driven technical resource lab for six, networked, regional Innovation Hubs, Pollicy are launching the DATAStrong program for East Africa.

Requirements:

  • DATAStrong is a comprehensive data skills program targeted at civil society in East Africa (Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania).
  • The program includes a 5-day interactive and participatory workshop in Kampala, Uganda on 7–11th May, 2018. The workshop is a step towards building a resilient community that is able to use data-driven visualizations and storytelling to bolster advocacy and rapidly respond to challenges posed by shrinking civic spaces in the region.

DATAStrong is unique in that the program offers a tailored curriculum, site visits and virtual mentoring in addition to bringing together organizations from throughout the region to better assess the current challenges and co-creatively develop a community that can support one another. We tailor the training programme to suit all participants and make sure everyone will leave feeling inspired and armed with brand new skills to help them do effective data driven advocacy.

DATAStrong will select 10 organisations from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to participate in the skills building workshop. The program will focus on organisations from 3 thematic areas:

– LGBTQ Community
– Minority Groups
– Aging Populations

British Council 2018 Creative Enterprise Programme for young Entrepreneurs from East Africa

Join other creative entrepreneurs for an interactive workshop session in Kampala, Uganda.

In May 2018, the British Council in partnership with Nesta (the UK’s innovation foundation) will deliver the Creative Enterprise Programme again to East Africa.

British Council is looking for creative entrepreneurs from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda to attend this four-day training in Kampala, Uganda.

The Creative Enterprise Programme is designed to support entrepreneurs who are already in the process of setting up their own creative enterprise. The workshop content and activities are relevant to people whose businesses are up-and-running and those who are in the very early stages.

It’s suitable for people just starting out and for people who have been running a business for a long time, to take a fresh look at their business using new methods.

Requirements:

All participants of the CEP must:

  • be a creative business, working in the relevant creative industry (fashion and literature)
  • have an already established enterprise, or be in the later stages of developing an idea. This is typically a business no more than two years old, but can be a more established business wishing to pause and consider their model through the CEP lens
  • be willing to share their knowledge and experience with the group in an open, supportive peer lead learning environment
  • come prepared to work on their business/idea, to progress through the programme, considering peer feedback, to strengthen their proposition
  • be open to supporting your fellow participants in developing their idea through providing constructive feedback when appropriate
  • be available for the full duration of the programme.

The CEP is a four-day practical workshop that equips creative entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed. Expert facilitators, as well as local market specialists, will provide face-to-face support to help entrepreneurs explore business ideas, develop their business proposition, and create a business model that suits their hopes and motivations.

This interactive programme brings Nesta’s Creative Enterprise Toolkit to life, and uses a mixture of practical exercises and activities that have been designed specifically for the programme.

Through the four days, participants explore key ways to:

  • understand the building blocks that describe and will shape their business opportunity
  • identify and better understand customers, and explore how the business will function and grow
  • visualise the main components of the business and bring together the key elements of a business plan.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The CEP builds on the Creative Enterprise Toolkit in a supportive peer-to-peer learning context. A Nesta workshop facilitator and creative business expert, who brings a wealth of experience, presents the content and offers participants advice and guidance for getting their products and services to market. Through interactive exercises and activities, participants will gain a better understanding of how to develop their business.

Facilitators

The programme is led by creative business experts and skilled facilitators who specialise in design thinking, business and innovation. Alongside this expert, each workshop features live case studies from the region, where local entrepreneurs discuss their experience of running a creative enterprise in the local region, and guest experts who can highlight specific local issues – for example around tax or legal matters.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are for candidates from least developed and lower middle income Commonwealth countries, for full-time Master’s study on selected courses, jointly supported by UK universities.

Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Shared Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. These scholarships are offered under six themes:

  1. Science and technology for development
  2. Strengthening health systems and capacity
  3. Promoting global prosperity
  4. Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

  • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2018

  • Approved tuition and examination fees– funded by the CSC
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,065 per month, or £1,306 per month for those studying at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2017-2018 levels) – paid and funded by the university
  • Warm clothing allowance, where applicable – paid and funded by the university
  • Study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas– claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC

The SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development is an annual awards scheme designed to find the most promising, innovative and locally led start-up eco-inclusive enterprises in countries with developing and emerging economies. The independent SEED International Jury of experts selects enterprises which have the potential to make real improvements in poverty eradication and environmental sustainability while contributing to a greener economy.

EADB Math, Science, Technology and Engineering University Scholarship Program 2018/2019 (Fully Funded Study in the USA)

The East African Development Bank and the Africa-America Institute are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2018-2019 EADB Math, Science, Technology and Engineering University Scholarship Program.

In partnership with the Africa-America Institute (AAI), the East African Development Bank (EADB) launched the EADB Math, Science, Technology and Engineering University Scholarship Program in 2015 to support the capacity of regional faculty teaching in fields (science, technology, engineering and math) which are critical to local employment and the growth of national economies. The fast-track, 12 month scholarships provide experienced teachers and lecturers from EADB member countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda) to earn a Masters’ degree in science, technology, engineering and Math (STEM) at Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA.

Since 2015, eight students have received this full scholarship to pursue a graduate degree at Rutgers University. As alumni, they have returned to their respective countries and are contributing towards building a skilled workforce in STEM fields in East Africa.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for this prestigious scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a citizen of one of the following countries: Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda
  • A university graduate with a bachelor’s degree with first class/upper second honors in mathematics, sciences or engineering
  • Have at least three (3) years of teaching experience in a STEM related field at a public institution in East Africa;
  • Currently working full-time in public, government-owned educational institutions
  • Committed to returning to their home country, to teach in a public government owned institution which is a mandatory requirement.
  • Diligent in successfully completing the application process by the allotted deadlines at Rutgers University

The Julius Nyerere Scholarship was set up in 2009 in memory of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961 and became the first prime minister and later president of Tanzania. Nyerere received a scholarship in 1949 to attend the University of Edinburgh where he obtained a Masters of Arts degree that saw him study courses in English, Political Economy, Social Anthropology, British History, Economic History, Constitutional Law, and Moral Philosophy.

Award

  • The Julius Nyerere Masters Scholarship will cover tuition fees, living costs of £10,000, and a return flight from Tanzania to the UK.
  • The scholarship is tenable for one academic year. In addition to their studies, the successful applicant will be expected to participate in Swahili language conversation tutorials. This will amount to no more than 20 hours for each scholar per semester.

Eligibility

  • The scholarship will be awarded to a Tanzanian citizen who is normally resident in Tanzania, and who is accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate one year Masters programme of study at the University of Edinburgh. Applicants who already hold a degree from outside Tanzania will not be considered.
  • Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.

Criteria

The scholarship is awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit, with candidates requiring a Bachelors degree equivalent to a UK First Class Honours (‘First’) or Upper Division/Upper Second Class Honours (‘2:1’) degree.

The Julius Nyerere Masters Scholarship is highly competitive and only the best candidates are considered. Prospective applicants should note that, to date, in almost all cases successful candidates for the Scholarships have held a First Class Honours degree. Applicants with a 2:1 Honours degree will be considered if they can show a very strong track record of work experience relevant to their prospective degree.

The East Africa Social Science Translation (EASST) Collaborative invites African researchers to apply for a 4-month fellowship (sabbatical) at the University of California, Berkeley, to be completed during Fall 2018 (September–December), or Spring 2019 (January-May).

Launched in 2009, The East Africa Social Science Translation (EASST) Collaborative is a multi-institution research network with a mission to promote rigorous evaluation of social and economic development programs in East Africa. EASST builds regional leadership in evaluation research by offering competitive fellowships and grants to junior social scientists at East African research institutions. EASST also facilitates collaboration between U.S. and East African researchers. Through these and other activities, EASST seeks to empower the “next generation” of social scientists to measure the impacts of development interventions, and then translate research findings into better public policies.

FELLOWSHIP ACTIVITIES

During the fellowship period, visiting researchers will:

  • Participate in seminars and conferences on research in social and economic development;
  • Present their own work during seminars and workshops;
  • Audit courses, including rigorous doctoral-level seminars in impact evaluation;
  • Carry out an independent research project under the mentorship of CEGA faculty (projects can use existing data for retrospective analysis or set-up a study design for future data collection);
  • Meet and collaborate with faculty and students in multiple academic departments;
  • Visit and present CEGA campuses, including UC San Diego, Stanford University, and/or UC Santa Cruz;
  • Design impact evaluation curricula that will be taught at an East African institution;
  • Participate in policy dissemination by contributing to policy briefs, attending meetings with policymakers and stakeholders, and presenting at events; and
  • Work with the World Bank and other partners to identify opportunities for future research.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates for EASST must:

  • Be a resident of an East African country (i.e. Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, or Uganda);
  • Have a PhD (completed within the last 8 years) or be enrolled in a graduate program in economics, statistics, epidemiology/public health, or another social science discipline;
  • Hold a staff position at a research institution, university or other organization in East Africa, preferably one that supports policy-relevant, quantitative social science research;
  • Have participated in or have familiarity with impact evaluation research (either randomized or quasi-experimental studies);
  • Have participated in field-based data collection and rigorous empirical research/analysis;
  • Be computer literate, fluent in English, and a strong public speaker;
  • Plan to return to a research institute in East Africa for at least 1 year after the fellowship; and
  • Demonstrate a commitment to building the capacity of African research institutions/universities.

Selection Criteria

Successful candidates must:

  • Demonstrate strong analytic skills, with past coursework in economics or statistics.
  • Demonstrate an interest in rigorous program evaluation, policy analysis, and micro-level field data collection.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and experience with engaging policy-makers and implementing bodies and disseminating research findings.
  • Submit a clear and innovative research proposal to evaluate a specific public policy or program, using randomized controlled trial or quasi-experimental methodologies.

*We will give preference to fellows interested in infectious diseases, agriculture, and digital financial inclusion.

Interested in becoming an influencer and leader for children’s development in your country? If producing high quality reporting and solutions-oriented stories about nutrition and early childhood development issues is one of your passions, then apply to this year-long fellowship, which will include two international reporting trips as well as continual mentoring and several virtual webinars.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), in partnership with the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and Fundação Maria Cecilia Souto Vidigal, is recruiting for 10 Early Childhood Development Reporting Fellows. The goal of the fellowships is to improve news coverage of child health and form a global network of reporters covering this critically-important issue.

Requirements:

  • The Fellowship is open to journalists covering issues of child health and development for news outlets based in Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania.
  • Journalists from all mediums are encouraged to apply: radio, broadcast, print, and online.
  • An ideal candidate will have previous experience covering early childhood development issues, but journalists who currently cover health or nutrition-related topics and are interested in increasing their coverage of children’s issues are welcome to apply.
  • Successful applicants must be employed by a news outlet or have a commitment to publish/broadcast from a news outlet to participate.
  • Applicants must be proficient in English.
  • Stories submitted may be written in your native language; however, reporting project proposals must be submitted in English.

The Fellowship

  • This is the third of three groups of fellows that will participate in the program between 2017 and 2019. The fellowship term for this second cohort will run from March 2018 – March 2019.
  • During the year-long program, the fellows will receive virtual training, mentoring and financial support to produce regular stories on nutrition and early-childhood development, relevant to their home countries.
  • The program will begin with a virtual orientation (webinar) after which each fellow will be assigned a mentor who will work with them as they produce stories on early childhood development issues. ICFJ will conduct regular webinars during the year of the fellowship.
  • The program also includes two reporting trips. ICFJ will send all fellows to a country that is implementing a successful and innovative approach to supporting childhood development. The fellows will meet with early childhood development experts in the field and will produce stories with the help of their mentors.
  • ICFJ and its partners are currently working on selecting the dates and destinations for both trips. ICFJ will cover all of the fellowship expenses.

To become an ECD Reporting Fellow, candidates must complete a Fellowship application. Applicants should include:

Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety Grant Programme 2018 : Call for Proposals

The Road Safety Grants Programme has supported organisations advocating for the adoption and implementation of evidence-based policies to protect road users since 2012. The grants programme is supported by the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety.

Organizations seeking funding to promote policy change and implementation to promote safer road users will be required to submit a short concept note for consideration. Please carefully read the call for proposals to determine if you are eligible before you apply. Note that applications will not be accepted from all BIGRS priority cities in Round 13.

The Road Safety Grants Programme is managed by the Global Road Safety Partnership, one of the eight implementing partners of the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety, and supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact, evidence-based road safety
interventions designed to strengthen road safety policies and their implementation.
Eligibility:
The Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety focuses on improving road safety policies (including laws, regulations, and standards) in 5 countries, and on improving (where possible)
and implementing evidence-based road safety policiesin 10 cities.
There are a number of evidence-based interventions aimed at reducing road traffic deaths and injuries. The Road Safety Grants Programme focuses exclusively on the passage and implementation of evidence-based policies which address key behavioural risk factors (speeding, drink driving, lack of seatbelt use, lack of child restraint use, or lack of helmet use).
Which countries are eligible to apply?
  • Applications addressing national level road safety policy reform and/or its implementation with comprehensive provisions on behavioural risk factors will be accepted from China, India, Philippines, Tanzania and Thailand.
Who can apply for a grant?
Governmental and non-governmental organizations based in eligible countries and cities can apply for grants within the following parameters:
• Governmental organizations with relevant authority over road safety policy and/ or its
implementation. Road police and military agencies are not eligible to apply.
• Non-governmental organizations (including but not limited to civil society organizations and
educational institutions) with relevant advocacy experience on policy reform/and or its
implementation.
Additionally,
• Applicants must be registered legal entities in the country of project delivery,
capable of entering into contractual arrangements, receiving foreign funds, and assuming legal and financial obligations.
• Applicants cannot be recipients of financial support from alcohol, firearms, pornography,
or tobacco industries.
• The Road Safety Grants Programme does not fund individuals.
• If you are a current grantee organization, please discuss development of Concept Note with your technical advisor.
How much funding can a project receive?
  • Proposals can be submitted for grants up to a maximum amount of 120,000 Swiss francs (CHF) for a short-term, one-year or two-year project. Funding requests should be consistent with the scope and capacity of your organization.
  • Cost reasonableness is a factor in the consideration of proposals.

Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme 2018/2019 for Postgraduate Studies

The Aga Khan Foundation 2018-2019 International Scholarship Programme application cycle opens from January 1, 2018. Application forms can be obtained from the Aga Khan Foundation or Aga Khan Education Board/Service office in the applicant’s country of current residence.

NOTE: For the 2018-19 application cycle, the Foundation will not accept applications from students planning to attend universities in UK, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, Norway and Ireland.

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from select developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies, in order to develop effective scholars and leaders and to prepare them for employment, primarily within the AKDN. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July.

The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses but is willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, only in the case of outstanding students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professors and who need a PhD for the fulfilment of their career objectives (academic or research oriented).

Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.

ELIGIBILITY

Geographic Scope

The Foundation accepts applications from nationals of the following countries:

Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. In France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, applications are accepted from those who are originally from one of the above developing countries, are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education.

Residency Requirement

The Foundation only accepts applications of eligible nationals listed above who are residing in one of the countries where there are local Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), or Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) offices which process applications and interview candidates.

Age Limit

Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) consistently excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a highly reputable university or programme of study and 4) relevance of the field of study to AKDN’s focus areas. Candidates are also evaluated on demonstrating thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans, their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest.

Financial Assistance

The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Funding for PhD programmes is only provided for the first two years of study, after which the students are expected to find alternative sources of assistance. Financial assistance is provided according to the needs of students, but the ISP must be considered a lender of last resort. Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.

Loan Conditions

Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. A guarantor is required to co-sign the loan agreement. The payback period is five years, starting six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.

Application Procedures

The application procedures of AKF’s International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Students may obtain application forms as of January 1st each year from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of current residence. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained. They should not be sent to Geneva.

  • The deadline for submission of entire completed applications is March 31, although in certain countries internal deadlines may be earlier in order to process and review applications.
  • Applicants are advised to contact the local offices for internal deadline dates and requirements as these may vary from country to country.

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships are for PhD candidates from low and middle income Commonwealth countries, to spend up to 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country.

Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. These scholarships are offered under six themes:

  1. Science and technology for development
  2. Strengthening health systems and capacity
  3. Promoting global prosperity
  4. Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

  • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Be registered for a PhD at a university in your home country by the time your scholarship is confirmed. Your final qualification will be awarded by your home country university (not your proposed UK university). This scholarship will not support your period of study at your home country university.
  • Ensure that an institutional or departmental link exists between your home university and your proposed UK university. This link must be greater than simply a collaboration between individuals.
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2018
  • By October 2018, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
  • Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

Scholarship Worth:

Each scholarship provides:
  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed)
  • Approved tuition fees
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,065 per month, or £1,306 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2017-2018 levels)
  • Warm clothing allowance, where applicable
  • Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
  • If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £458 per month for the first child, and £112 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK
  • The CSC’s family allowances are intended to be only a contribution towards the cost of maintaining your family in the UK. The true costs are likely to be considerably higher, and you must be able to supplement these allowances in order to support any family members who come to the UK with you.
HOW TO APPLY
  • You should apply to study at a UK university which has a part funding agreement with the CSC. Part funding agreements are at the discretion of individual universities. The World Bank wants to hear your ideas on how the private sector can help the public sector initiate better public infrastructure, and other public services in Tanzania. Enter the Private Public Partnership (PPP) Essay Competition, and you could win an attachment to the World Bank in Tanzania!

Tanzania’s energy sector is going through a rapid transition. There are promising developments in energy financing, policy, and entrepreneurship. But as we often see, change can be slow and fragmented. Why is this so? What can Tanzanian entrepreneurs and citizens do to accelerate change? How can we strengthen an ecosystem of innovation in Tanzania’s energy sector?

Young people, when working together in multidisciplinary teams, have the potential to come up with innovative solutions, and the unique drive to make this happen.

Therefore, the Energy Change Lab (a programme of Hivos and IIED) is inviting a mixed group of young students from varied backgrounds, entrepreneurs, artists and engineers (age 18-35) for an Energy Safari in Arusha and surrounding rural areas. An Energy Safari is an intense 5-day learning experience to explore and experience the main challenges around energy issues and rural productivity, and to work together on new potential solutions.

Requirements:

In Swahili, ‘safari’ means ‘journey’. Five days is not exactly a long journey, but it might feel like that when you see where you will start and where you end up at the end of the week. The Safari will take place from 29th January to 2nd February 2018.

  • Participants from a range of backgrounds, age 18-35
  • The program will bring together software developers with engineers, entrepreneurs, political scientists, social scientists, activists and more.

Objectives

  • Greater awareness and knowledge of complex energy problems coupled with issues of rural development;
  • Potential solutions or steps towards solutions;
  • Increased problem-solving capabilities and skills;
  • Understanding how to apply methods and solutions to your own work or study context;
  • A growing community of social innovators; build new connections and relationships.

Benefits:

  • Participation in the Safari is free of charge: food, drinks, accommodation and local transport are covered. This means however that the organizers expect full participation and full presence.

SIDA International Training Programme 2018 on Sustainable Urban Water and Sanitation – Integrated Processes

The SIDA International Training Programme’s overarching objective is to contribute to improved planning and implementation of  better sustainable urban water and sanitation services, where the rights, needs and demands of  all citizens, including those of marginalised groups, are taken into account.

The term sustainability addresses environmental, social and economic long-term factors. Sustainability can be achieved only through an increased awareness of  the need for integrated approaches and for long-term systems and by supporting key organisations in their processes for such a change.

Target Group

Candidates may be nominated by authorities, institutions, universities, NGOs, water utilities or other private companies active in the water and sanitation sector.

The programme is primarily targeting organisations, not individuals, and efforts will be made to establish long-term relationships with key organisations. Such collaborative organisations should be willing to commit themselves to participation over several years and to cooperate with other organisations in the programme. Capacity and interest to drive change processes to achieve their long-term goals, and a certain level of  influence on the water and sanitation sector, is a prerequisite to become a collaborative organisation. Candidates from collaborative organisations may be prioritised.

Applicants to the programme should:

  • hold a key position in their organisation, with influence on a strategic level
  • have the engagement and power to initiate and drive change processes;
  • hold a relevant academic degree; and
  • be available and motivated for active participation through the whole training programme.

Invited countries and areas:

Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

To promote actual collaboration and integration between participants in their national working context, the programme aims to gather organisations operating in the same geographical area. The programme is therefore focusing on the following areas:

Kenya – Narok

Rwanda – Kigali

Tanzania – Babati

Uganda – Amuria and similar smaller towns

Zambia – Lusaka

Organisations working in other areas than the above, are also welcome to nominate candidates, but should be aware of  the priority given to the selected areas.

Contents

The programme will address the following four priority themes:

Systems that Deliver – How to develop and transform systems to realize the human right to water and sanitation, and what it takes in terms of addressing governance, standards, decision-making processes, finance, and inclusion of marginalised groups.

Integrated Approaches – How to work holistically with urban development, manage conflicting goals, increase synergies across sectors and spur collaboration between organisations and institutions at city-level and beyond.

Sustainable Solutions – How to find approaches, practices and technology that is contributing to more sustainable service provision, as use and reuse of water, innovative sanitation solutions and new methods of improving hygiene practices.

Organisational Change – How to work as a change agent and manage change processes that will strengthen the organization’s ability to support and deliver improved water, sanitation and hygiene activities and services.

Applications for the TGCL (LLM) Scholarships 2018/2019 program are now being accepted

Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies (TGCL) invites applications from candidates from the East African Community Partner States (i.e. Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) for LLM studies starting 1st October 2018.

Requirements:

  • The minimum requirement for admission to the LLM program is a Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent from a recognised higher learning institution.
  • The language of instruction in the School of Law is English. Those who are not conversant with it should not apply.
  • Candidates who have graduated (their bachelor degree or equivalent) longer than six years before the application deadline are not encouraged to apply.

The Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies (TGCL) Call for Applications 2018/2019

The Contents of the Programme

The candidates will pursue a coursework and a dissertation programme on Regional Integration and East African Community Law. The programme takes one year of full-time attendance.

On successful completion of the programme, the students will obtain a Master of Laws degree from the University of Dar es Salaam and an additional TGCL Certificate.

Scholarships

The TGCL will award scholarships only to applicants from EAC partner states and will cover:

  • the university fees for the LLM programme
  • a reasonable health insurance
  • an annual stipend of 2,400 EUR for Tanzanians and of 3,000 EUR for non-Tanzanians
  • a housing allowance of 30 EUR per month
  • a once-off research grant of 460 EUR

Mode of Application

The applicant must register online through the TGCL website and submit the following documents electronically:

  • a signed curriculum vitae with clear evidence of periods of legal and other relevant education, training and practical experience. It is compulsory to use the Europass CV template (http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu).
  • a one-page letter of motivation
  • certified photocopies of all relevant certificates (birth certificate, school leaving certificates, academic transcripts, certificates of legal or other professional education, including provisional results for applicants who are in the final year of their LLB studies); in the case of documents not written in English, an official translation should be attached
  • a recent passport picture
  • a release letter from your employer (if you are employed)
  • a proposal of the intended research (1,500 words) – see annexed guidelines

Hivos collaboration grants 2018 for coworking and creative hubs in Africa

Last month Hivos organized the third edition of its Coworking Summit, an annual gathering for founders and managers of creative hubs, coworking, hacker, maker, and art spaces. This year marked a special edition, as Hivos decided to join forces with Afrilabs, bringing together more than 40 hubs from all over Africa.

The event provided a platform for participants to network, share stories and experiences, learn from their peers, get inspired and boost new collaborations. In order to facilitate these processes further, Hivos invite coworking and creative hubs to apply for the Hivos’ collaboration grants.

Grants

Hivos will provide the following two type of grants:

  1. Knowledge exchange grants

This type of grant will be awarded to candidates who want to benefit from each other’s expertise and/or experience.

Examples:

  • A maker space in country A visits a creative hub in country B to help them with 3D technology.
  • A creative hub in country A visits an ICT space in country B to learn about their financial sustainability model.
  • Space A sends a staff member to space B to learn about community outreach and space B sends a staff member to space A in return to learn about marketing or monetization of creative content.

Grants within this category have a value of 1.000 – 5.000 EUR.

  1. Collaborative projects grants

This type of grant will be awarded to candidates who want to undertake a joint project.

Examples:

  • Art spaces from countries A, B, and C organize a joint art exhibition or music festival.
  • Tech hubs A and B create an innovative product together.
  • Coworking spaces from countries A, B, C and D work together to come up with an innovative collaboration between coworking communities throughout Africa.

Grants within this category have a value of 10.000 – 20.000 EUR.

The total amount of grants awarded for the knowledge exchange and the collaborative projects is 60.000 euros.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applying spaces should be based in one or more of the following countries*: Algeria, Egypt, Kenya,  Libya, Malawi, Morocco, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Uganda.
  • Knowledge exchange grants. Spaces applying for this type of grant can either submit a single application (space A visits space B) or a group application (space A visits space B and space B visits space A). In the case of a single application, a letter of agreement of the host space is required. Spaces should also include a fee in their budget proposal for the services/time expected from the host organization.
  • Collaborative project grants. Spaces applying for this type of grant are expected to initiate collaboration and form a partnership prior to applying for the grant. Spaces should jointly prepare a proposal and budget, which must be agreed upon and signed by all spaces involved. Spaces then appoint one lead space that will submit the grant application on behalf of the group to Hivos. The lead member will receive the grant amount and is responsible for its distribution to other consortium members according to the agreed budget that is submitted.
  • A space can send a maximum of 3 representatives to the other space. Representatives should fall into one of the following categories:
  • Space founder
  • Space manager
  • Space staff member

Process

Step 1: Submission of grant proposals by 10 December 2017

Step 2: Selection by 24 December 2017 (grant recipients will be notified shortly after)

Step 3: Contracting by the end of January

Step 4: Activity period February – May

Format

Applications are accepted in Arabic, French, and English. The grant proposals must be no longer than 3 pages with the following sections:

  1. Collaboration details:
    • Number of member spaces
    • Names and countries of spaces and legal entity of each space
    • Short description of the work and the mission of all spaces
    • Names, positions and contact details (phone number & e-mail address) of each representative nominated to travel
  2. State for which type of grant you are applying (knowledge exchange grant or collaborative project grant) and provide a brief outline of what you would like to do with the grant. Try to be as concrete as possible.
  3. Brief outline of proposed activities, including a simple schedule, time frame or step-by-step list.
  4. Budget proposal, including the requested amount (In EUR).
  5. Signatures of the founders of all consortium member spaces in case of a collaborative project grant

Selection criteria

Applications are assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of the project to the local context;
  • Interdisciplinary of the collaboration (e.g. an unusual alliance between an art space and ICT hub etc.);
  • Preference is given to those who seek collaboration between Northern African countries and Sub-Saharan African countries;
  • Preference is given to applicants from spaces outside capital cities;
  • Preference is given to female applicants and those belonging to minority groups;
  • Preference is given to candidates who have not received a Hivos’ collaboration grant before.

Requirements and reporting

Successful applicants are required to submit a final narrative and financial report after the completion of their visit, which is used to measure the outcomes of the visit and the overall benefit/added value of the mobility grant. The report, which will be flexible in format (a formal report, a series of articles or blog posts, a video), should at least include the following information:

  • Details of the spaces involved
  • Objectives set out at the beginning
  • Details about the activities undertaken with the grant
  • Outcomes at the end of exchange/collaboration
  • Plans for continuation of collaboration with other spaces
  • Financial report in line with Hivos requirements (to be shared after grant approval)

The Advancing Young Women Professional Fellows Program 2018 for young Women Agribusiness Entrepreneurs & Innovators (Fully Funded to USA)

United States Department of State Professional Fellows Program—Advancing Young Women Agribusiness Entrepreneurs and Innovators: A Tanzania-Kenya-Uganda-U.S. Partnership.

The goal of the Fellows Program is to build fellows’ capacity and skills in agro-entrepreneurship and agri-food system innovation and for them to learn about issues of women’s economic empowerment. Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan fellows will develop their leadership capacity and professional skills through a fully funded four-week fellowship program in the United States.

The four-week U.S. program will include a professional internship with Michigan organizations focused on agriculture, innovation, agro-entrepreneurship, and women’s empowerment and additional seminars and trainings with professionals from Michigan State University and throughout the state of Michigan.

The Advancing Young Women Professional Fellows Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Professional Fellows Division and administered by Michigan State University (U.S.), Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania), University of Nairobi (Kenya), and Kyambogo University (Uganda).

The Advancing Young Women Professional Fellows Program are recruiting young Tanzanian, Kenyan, and Ugandan professionals from diverse backgrounds in private, public, non-governmental, and education sectors who are either women agribusiness entrepreneurs or individuals working to increase women’s economic engagement in the agricultural sector.

Who Should Apply

  • Women entrepreneurs, social innovators, or small and medium business owners or managers and other leaders working in the agriculture and food sectors
  • Individuals (of any gender) in civil society and NGOs working on programs that support women in the agriculture and food sectors in their respective countries
  • Policymakers, ministry employees, and others in the public sector (of any gender) focused on supporting and improving opportunities for women in the agriculture or food sector
  • Academic staff (of any gender) who are implementing programs to impact advancing women in the agriculture and food sectors

Eligibility Requirements

  • 25-40 years old
  • A citizen, national, or permanent resident of Tanzania, Kenya, or Uganda
  • Is living and working in Tanzania, Kenya, or Uganda at the time of the application
  • Speaks fluent English
  • Has at least 2 years of professional/working experience in their field
  • Has demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills and a commitment to community
  • Has employer’s support for participating in the program (for those not self-employed). For those self-employed, has recommendation from local authorities at the district, county, and/or community levels
  • Is interested in participating in a reciprocal program for American participants coming to your country
  • Preference will be given to those who are in an earlier state of their careers
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously had the opportunity to travel to the US

Program Dates

Spring program: April 27, 2018 – June 1, 2018
Fall program: October 12, 2018 – November 17, 2018

The first four-week program in the U.S. is scheduled for April 27-June 1, 2018 and the second for October 12-November 17, 2018. Both programs will include:

Part 1: Pre-Departure Orientation prior to travel to the U.S.

Program partners and the U.S. Embassies in the two countries will conduct a pre-departure orientation.

Part 2: Post-Arrival Orientation in East Lansing, Michigan

The orientation will familiarize the program participants with each other as well as the program and topics to be covered and the U.S.

Part 3: Three-Week Program in Michigan Communities

Participants will take part in internships with Michigan institutions and dialogue in seminars and meetings with U.S. leaders in economic development in the food and agriculture sector. Fellows will also select, design, and complete a special project in an area of their own interest. Seminars will combine presentations and discussions to provide an opportunity for Fellows to share experiences from their home countries and organizations and observations from their internship placements. Fellows will also have the opportunity of a one-week homestay with an American family.

Part 4: Three-Day Participation in the Professional Fellows Congress in Washington D.C.

The Congress will allow participants the opportunity to meet and share their experience with Fellows from around the world and participate in dialogue to examine the roles of individual and institutional leadership in economic development and women’s economic empowerment.

LéO Africa Institute Young and Emerging Leaders Project (YELP) 2018 for young east Africans.

The fellowship represents LéO Africa Institute signature leadership development project which espouses the dignity, self-worth, and identity of the African as the cornerstone of leadership values.

LéO Africa Institute are looking for young and emerging leaders from diverse cultural and entrepreneurial backgrounds, already engaged either as social entrepreneurs, innovators, media and journalism practitioners, artists, or activists. Potential fellows should be conscious of their duty in transforming society and are dedicated to promoting Africa’s interests and image in the world. We anticipate in time to build a critical mass of individuals committed to personal development, advancement of career, and shaping a progressive future for East Africa and Africa at large.

Selection Criteria

The selection of candidates for the Young and Emerging Leaders project will be highly competitive, and for the 2018 class limited to participants from within East Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania).

The nominees should:

  1. Be involved in an initiative that directly impacts the lives of many people in their community
  2. Commit to travel to and make time for all the three seminars in the Fellowship
  3. Be between the ages of 18 and 30 as of January 1st 2018 (subject to review on case by case basis)

The selected candidates will graduate as fellows after undertaking three seminars on various aspects of leadership. Fellows will then pledge to take on an extra commitment in implementing a project or champion a cause with demonstrated capacity to have positive impact on society.

Candidates who graduate will join the LéO Africa Institute’s Leadership Network of outstanding individuals in East Africa. The network that is formed through the different cohorts of classes will continue to be brought together through our various platforms, collaborative engagements, and at the annual leaders gathering (ALG), the Institute’s flagship thought leadership event.

British Council Creative Enterprise training Programme for Fashion Entrepreneurs from east Africa – Kampala, Uganda.

From 30 January – 01 February 2018, the British Council in partnership with Nesta (the UK’s innovation foundation) will deliver the Creative Enterprise Programme to East Africa.

British Council are looking for fashion entrepreneurs from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda to attend this 3-day training in Kampala, Uganda.

This training will be focusing on fashion entrepreneurs – Fashion Designers, Tailors, Fashion Illustrators, Textile designers, Fashion journalists and Personal Stylists.

The Creative Enterprise Programme is designed to support entrepreneurs who are already in the process of setting up their own creative enterprise. The workshop content and activities are relevant to people whose businesses are up-and-running and those who are in the very early stages.

It’s suitable for people just starting out and for people who have been running a business for a long time, to take a fresh look at their business using new methods.

Requirements:

All participants of the CEP must:

  • Be a creative business, working in the fashion industry
  • Have an already established enterprise, or be in the later stages of developing an idea. This is typically a business no more than two years old, but can be a more established business wishing to pause and consider their model through the CEP lens
  • Be willing to share their knowledge and experience with the group in an open, supportive peer lead learning environment
  • Come prepared to work on their business/idea, to progress through the programme, considering peer feedback, to strengthen their proposition
  • Be open to supporting your fellow participants in developing their idea through providing constructive feedback when appropriate
  • Be available for the full duration of the programme

The Creative Enterprise Programme is a three-day practical workshop that equips creative entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed. Expert facilitators, as well as local market specialists, will provide face-to-face support to help entrepreneurs explore business ideas, develop their business proposition, and create a business model that suits their hopes and motivations.

This interactive programme brings Nesta’s Creative Enterprise Toolkit to life, and uses a mixture of practical exercises and activities that have been designed specifically for the programme.

Through the three days, participants explore key ways to:

  • understand the building blocks that describe and will shape their business opportunity
  • identify and better understand customers, and explore how the business will function and grow
  • visualise the main components of the business and bring together the key elements of a business plan

Programme objectives

The Creative Enterprise Programme builds on the Creative Enterprise Toolkit in a supportive peer-to-peer learning context. A Nesta workshop facilitator and creative business expert, who brings a wealth of experience, presents the content and offers participants advice and guidance for getting their products and services to market. Through interactive exercises and activities, participants will gain a better understanding of how to develop their business.

Programme outline

Day 1 You and Your Idea

Focuses on helping participants understand the building blocks that describe and shape their business opportunity:

  • Explores Values, Vision and Mission
  • Uses modelling to demonstrate what impact the business could have

Day 2 Your Customers

Encourages participants to identify and better understand customers and users. It focuses on exploring how the business will function and grow by:
Learning from other local creative entrepreneurs
Describing customer profiles and needs
Defining the business processes and the relationships needed to help them realise their business opportunity

Day 3

Visualise the main components of the business and to bring together the key elements of participants’ business plans through a first draft of the Business Model Canvas (BMC). It provides supports participants to:

  • Understand the legal and financial considerations for running a business
  • Evaluate the business and plan for the future
  • Prototype a first draft of a business plan using the BMC

About the facilitators

The programme is led by creative business experts and skilled facilitators who specialise in design thinking, business and innovation. Alongside this expert, each workshop features live case studies from the region, where local entrepreneurs discuss their experience of running a creative enterprise in the local region, and guest experts who can highlight specific local issues – for example around tax or legal matters.

International Journalists‘ Programmes (IJP) Southern African Journalists’ Bursary Programme 2018 (Funded to Germany/3.000 Euros Stipend)

International Journalists’ Programmes (IJP) offer a bursary to up to six young Southern African (SADC-Member States: Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe + Kenia) and up to five young German journalists. For two months the Southern African delegates will have the chance to work in Germany. They will be integrated into the day-to-day journalism of their host newsroom while also researching stories for their home media.

It is assumed that all candidates have a strong command of the English language. German language abilities are an advantage but are not mandatory.

The Southern African-German Journalists’ Programme is a multiyear effort to shape an integrated understanding of the other country and region and to foster relations between Africa and Germany. It has been offered as a response to concerns about an increasing political and cultural detachment between Africa and Europe. The bursary is intended to enable young journalists to gain valuable insights into the political, economical, cultural as well as the social fabric of the host country.

The bursary is named in honour of the former Federal President Horst Köhler and his exemplary dedication to the intensification of German-African relations.

Benefits:

  • The Southern African delegates receive a fixed payment of 3,000 Euro. This is expected to cover most of their travel, accommodation and living expenses. No further payments will be made: delegates are expected to use their own funds for any further costs.
  • Payment for their work with the host media is not envisaged. To receive the full grant participants are obliged to write a report of at least three pages and provide copies of their published journalistic work after returning home.

Application Procedure:

All journalists from Southern Africa (SADC Member States and Kenia) between the age of 25 and 40 who regularly work for a media organisation can apply.

1. Enclose a CV with a passport photograph.

2. Write a 800 word essay addressing the following topics:

  • Why you would like to work in Germany
  • What you expect from IJP and what you think you can contribute to it?
  • What are the 3 research topics you want to pursue during the fellowship?
  • What role you expect to play at your home media in the future?
  • How you will spend the bursary?

3. Include a one-page resume detailing your education and work experience, your standard of German and English (copies of certificates/ e.g. Goethe Institut/Toefel), plus 2 copies of articles written by you (TV and radio journalists must type up their reports since no audio or video tapes can be considered)

4. A journalistic reference from your editor or head of department is required (freelancers should submit a reference from a senior journalist). It should also guarantee your leave of absence for the duration of the program.

2018 International Professional Fellows Program on Inclusive Disability Employment for east Africans (Fully Funded to USA)

The International Professional Fellows Program on Inclusive Disability Employment will enable 20 Professional Fellows from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to participate in a five-week Fellowship program at a university-based research and education center or community-based organization for disabilities in the United States. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) in partnership with Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston and Handicap International (HI).

Fellows in this program will learn approaches that can inform their efforts to strengthen employment access for people with disabilities in their home countries. Inclusive employment means that people with disabilities are not excluded from the competitive labor market on the basis of disability. Fellows will also form connections with mentors at the university centers or community-based organizations that serve as their host sites, and will plan an inclusive employment project that they will implement in their home countries with support from their host mentors. This is called the follow-on project.

Two cohorts of Fellows will participate in the program. The first cohort will be in the U.S. from April 26 to June 3, 2018, and the second cohort will be in the U.S. from October 11 to November 18, 2018.

Eligibility Requirements:

The International Professional Fellows Program on Inclusive Disability Employment is a merit based competition that is open to candidates in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. All eligible
applications will be reviewed by a selection panel. Semi-finalists will be interviewed and must
pass English language proficiency tests. Applicants will be considered based on the following
criteria:
• Professional interest and/or experience in inclusive employment and disabilities.
• Two or more years of relevant work experience with or for non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government offices, universities, schools or community-based organizations.
• Demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills.
• Professional and program goals aligned with the AUCD mission of disability empowerment.
• Idea for an individualized inclusive employment project to implement in the Fellow’s home country.
• English language oral and written proficiency.
In order to meet Fellowship requirements, an applicant must be:
• 25–40 years old
• A citizen and resident of Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda
• Eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa
• Not currently participating in an academic, training, or research program in the
U.S.
• Available to travel during end of April through end of May 2018 or mid-October
through mid-November 2018
• Committed to returning to his or her home country for a minimum of two years
after completing the program

Key Program Activities:
Fellows will engage in:
1. An orientation to the program and life in the U.S. Fellows will learn about the U.S.
disability movement and disability rights, with a focus on inclusive employment.

2. A Professional Fellows Congress which will provide an opportunity to meet with hundreds
of other Professional Fellows from many countries who are participating in other exchange
programs. During the Congress, Fellows will engage in discussions and professional trainings to
support the development of projects at home.

3. A homestay with an American family at least one week (or four weekends) in duration.

4. A Fellowship at a host site in the U.S., likely a university-based research and education
center or community-based organization at which Fellows will work alongside experts, and
study policies and practices in inclusive employment. Fellows will be placed with a host whose
expertise matches their individual professional goals.

5. Weekly group seminars in which Fellows will discuss their host site placements, share
experiences, and learn about leadership and inclusive employment with mentors and peers.

6. An individualized inclusive employment project that is developed with support from host
mentors and implemented upon the Fellow’s return home. Project implementation may include a technical assistance trip by a host site mentor to the Fellow’s home country.

7. Ongoing access to alumni from other programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of
State, which will provide opportunities to share information and experiences, and to seek peer
support and mentoring.

Hivos is seeking concept notes from artistic collectives, creative hubs and groups of content creators working on creative and cultural content production in East Africa. The funding support is geared towards supporting independent content production as a way of contributing to more independent, self-sufficient initiatives that reach larger audiences.

This open call is directed at initiatives currently based in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Besides artistic imagination, the production of audio-visual, independent and conscious work that challenges or questions norms in society will be an important factor in the awarding of grants.

Entities that are or are representing communities of creative and cultural producers  engaged in audio-visual content creation such as: creative spaces, groups of artists, music studios, hubs, cafés, art spaces, art galleries, independent production houses, networks of artists and producers, online platforms, collectives, co-working spaces focusing on the creative industry.

Entities producing content/work that aims to show alternative viewpoints on big issues affecting society that challenges or question certain norms in society. This content/work should enhance public debate through enabling alternative viewpoints to mainstream societal narratives. This type of work is often called socially engaged work or conscious work.

Eligible countries: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The requested amount should not exceed 25.000EUR over a three (3) to 12 months period.

Review and selection process

The following are the steps that will be undertaken by Hivos to review the concept notes and determine the awarding of grants:

  • Step 1: Submission of concept notes; Deadline Wednesday 15th November 2017;
  • Step 2: Review and selection of received concept notes by a Hivos grants selection committee: Monday 20th November 2017. (Successful applications will be invited for pitching interview);
  • Step 3: Proposal pitching interview with grants selection committee (Grant recipients will be notified shortly after) 23rd to 27th November 2017;
  • Step 4: Capacity assessments of selected applicants on organizational and financial eligibility;
  • Step 4: Co-creation process with Hivos team of the final proposal/ activities;
  • Step 5: Contracting: December 2017.

Format of concepts

The Proposals must be no more than 4 pages with the following sections:

  • Name of the entity, focus country/countries and representative that will sign the agreement if the grant is awarded.
  • Start and estimated end date of the project.
  • The requested amount (In EUR).
  • Short description of your work/ practice and the mission of your organization.
  • One (1) example of a previous creative work that was produced by you or one of the members of your organization that provides alternative points of view on big issues affecting society and that challenges or questions a certain norm in society.
  • Briefly describe the activities that will be undertaken using this grant. Try to be as concrete as possible and describe how the project is challenging norms in society.
  • Brief outline of proposed activities, including a simple schedule, time frame or step to step list.

The Regional Training of Trainers (ToT) programme is held on an annual basis for a maximum of 36 participants (two from 18 countries in Southern and East Africa: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe) with a view to developing a pool of human rights advocates with expertise on HIV, TB, SRHR and human rights in the region. This in turn contributes to increased advocacy on HIV, TB, SRHR and human rights in these countries and at the regional level. The programme comprises of the following modules:
  • A five-day trainers workshop on human rights, HIV, TB and SRHR: 19-23 February 2018;
  • A five-day workshop on project management: 21-25 May 2018;
  • A five-day workshop on HIV and TB prevention an
  • d treatment literacy: 20-24 August 2018; and
  • A five-day advanced training of trainers workshop: 5-9 November 2018.

The training of trainers programme will equip participants with:

  1. A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between health and human rights and the importance of a rights-based response to HIV, TB and SRHR;
  2. A better understanding of the international and regional treaties, declarations and guidelines that can be utilised to shape national responses to HIV, TB and SRHR;
  3. Guidance on how to use law and policy to promote human rights based response to HIV, TB and SRHR;
  4. Examples of good practice in advocacy for a rights-based response to HIV, TB and SRHR in Southern and East Africa;
  5. Latest science and advancement in HIV and TB prevention and treatment; and
  6. Project planning and management skills.

People living with HIV, women, key populations (such as sex workers, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI) people or people who use drugs) and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

The Disability Rights Scholarship Program provides yearlong awards for master’s degree study to disability rights advocates, lawyers, and educators to develop new legislation, jurisprudence, policy, research, and scholarship to harness the innovations and opportunities offered by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Eligibility Criteria

The program does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.  Candidates with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply. The competition is merit-based and open to those meeting the following criteria:

  • be a citizen and legal resident of China,  Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Mexico, or Peru at the time of application
  • have work experience in the legal profession or advocacy focusing on human/disability rights
  • have an excellent academic record with a bachelor of laws (LLB; in exceptional circumstances, those without a LLB but with substantial relevant experience may be considered)—a degree must be awarded by the application deadline
  • have demonstrated leadership in the field of disability rights
  • be proficient in spoken and written English or French and able to meet university-designated minimum scores on standardized language tests
  • be able to participate in an intensive academic writing program in summer 2018
  • be able to begin the graduate program in August or September 2018
  • be able to receive and maintain visa or study permit required by host country
  • demonstate a clear commitment to return to home country to contribute to advancing the inclusion and full participation of persons with disabilities in their communities

Fellows will be clustered if possible at select institutions that demonstrate cutting-edge capacity for legal education in international disability rights, and that are interested in forming a consortium of schools dedicated to developing this field and deepening their own capacity with an international perspective.  In nurturing such a network, the Program strives to encourage faculties to incorporate disability rights into existing human rights curricula and participate in collaboratively-designed workshops and research efforts in the field.   Participating schools include:

Young Leaders Forum (YLF) is an annual program for learning and networking, dialogue and capacity building sessions for youth between the age of 18-35 years, from social enterprises, business start-ups, civil society, international organizations and public institutions. Convened for the first time in 2016 by the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA), The 2017 Young Leaders Forum will be held from November 15-17, 2017 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, inviting young leaders from across Africa.

OSIEA is a part of the global Open Society Foundations network. Founded in 2005, OSIEA plays an active role in encouraging open, informed dialogue about issues of public importance. We support individuals and groups to participate in matters that affect them in order to demand fair treatment, delivery of services and accountability from their leaders and institutions.
Requirements:
  • There are no fees to attend the forum.
  • Organizers will also provide limited support for meals and accommodation for participants from outside Dar es Salaam.

Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme 2018/2019 for study in Ireland (Fully Funded)

The Fellowship Training Programme was Irish Aid’s first scholarship programme, begun in 1974. Since that time, it has brought suitably qualified candidates from developing countries to undertake Masters degrees at universities and colleges in Ireland, with further students supported for similar courses in their own region.

Awards are made in fields such as development studies, rural development, health care, education and law with the aim of supporting and enhancing the contribution recipients can make to Irish Aid’s partner organisations. Fellowship eligibility requirements aim to ensure close alignment with Irish Aid’s programmatic approach.

Eligible Courses:

Relevant Masters programmes in Ireland and regionally.  A directory listing suitable courses for study in Ireland is available to applicants, covering programmes in up to 12 subject areas.

Before finalising your course choices and submitting your application, please confirm with the relevant Irish Embassy that they remain fully satisfied that the courses you have chosen from the Irish Aid Directory of Eligible Postgraduate Courses accord with the Embassy’s country priorities. Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must

  • be a citizen of one of Irish Aid’s partner countries (i.e. Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia), or of Cambodia, Kenya, Liberia, Palestine, Myanmar, Rwanda or Zimbabwe.
  • be resident in that country.
  • have achieved the necessary academic standard to be accepted onto a Master’s degree course in a higher education institution in Ireland or within their own region.
  • be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the development of their home country.
  • have identified relevant college courses in a higher education institution in Ireland or within their own region. For study in Ireland, you must select courses from the Irish Aid Directory of Eligible Postgraduate Courses
  • be applying to commence a new qualification and not be seeking funding for a course they have already commenced or which will begin before fellowship awards have been notified.
  • be able to take up the fellowship in the academic year 2018/2019.
  • provide a letter of reference from their employer and a completed Employer Endorsement Form.

For study in Ireland, applicants must also

  • be able to demonstrate skills in academic English by achieving an appropriate score on a recognised test (IELTS 6.5)
  • contact the Irish Embassy to confirm that the courses they have chosen from the Directory of Postgraduate Courses accord with the Embassy’s priorities in their country (see contact information below).

Benefits:

  • The scholarship award covers course fees, required flights, accommodation (for out of country study), monthly allowances, insurance and other incidental expenses.

Mo Dewji Foundation Scholarships 2017 for high performing Tanzanian Students.

The Mo Dewji Foundation provides scholarships to outstanding high school students planning to pursue higher education, which cover four years of undergraduate college. The scholarship program is intended to create a community of passionate students and provide them with the capacity to achieve their greatest potential. Eligible students must be admitted to the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) or Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). 

Requirements:

High Academic Achievement: Recipient must have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.8 on their A-Levels. This will be judged based on their academic transcript, and by testimony to your scholarly excellence that is provided by a letter of recommendation by a teacher.

Financial Need: Recipient must demonstrate financial need and submit documentation in the form of a written statement explaining need plus any available reinforcing narrative in the form of references that will be vetted by the committee.

Leadership Potential: Recipient must demonstrate leadership potential as demonstrated in extra-curricular activities, projects, and/or duties upheld prior to commencing their undergraduate studies. Applicants are required to provide evidence of this in the form of a written recommendation letter, awards received etc. as and where applicable.

Other eligibility requirements include:

  • Recipient must be a citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania (at the time they apply for the scholarship).
  • Recipient must have attended a secondary school in Tanzania to be eligible for this scholarship. Home-schooled students are not eligible.
  • Recipient must be fluent in both English and Kiswahili at the time of their application.
  • Recipient must be entering their first year of undergraduate education.
  • Recipient must declare their intent with a major / degree program of his/her choice.
  • Recipient should not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution within Tanzania or outside the country.

Benefits:

 

  • Scholarship will be applied to the following expenses only:
    • Tuition Fees = TZS 1,000,000 – TZS 1,500,000 depending on the academic program of the scholarship recipient.
    • Direct University Fees = ID fees, registration fee, examination fees, medical capitation fees, student union fees, books and stationary allowance. A maximum amount of TZS 80,000 per scholarship recipient.
    • Housing and meals allowance = TZS 1,500,000 per annum per scholarship recipient.
  • Scholarship award is a non-cash award to recipient’s UDSM / SUA account as outlined on the scholarship application. No check or other cash monies will be disbursed at any time. No exceptions.
Additional Program Components

Extracurricular Participation

Recipients are encouraged to join and actively participate in extra-curricular activities, including but not limited to those organized by the UDSM / SUA Students’ Union. UDSM / SUA will provide recipients with a list of available activities for them through the campus during the orientation week.

Practical Summer Training Internship

Upon successful completion of the academic year, recipients are eligible to apply for an un-paid practical training summer-internships (“internship”) at MeTL Group subsidiaries, affiliates or MDF.

  • The internship will be open solely to recipients of the MoScholars Program.
  • MDF will publish a list of available internships at least three (3) months prior to the summer vacation as a call-for-applications. Recipients are strongly encouraged to apply and participate in the internship to complement their existing academic program at UDSM / SUA.
  • Recipients are eligible for reference letters upon successful completion of their internships at the sole discretion of the host company.
  • As an intern, the recipient will not be a company employee. Therefore, they will not receive a salary, wages, or other compensation. In addition, they will not be eligible for any benefits that the Company offers its employees, including, but not limited to, health benefits, holiday pay, vacation pay, sick leave, transport allowance, communication allowance, housing or retirement benefits.
  • Upon conclusion of the internship, the recipient must return all company-owned property, equipment, and documents, including electronic mail or other information. By accepting this internship offer, you acknowledge that you must adhere to our confidentially policy.
  • By accepting the internship offer, the recipient acknowledges that all costs associated with the internship will not be compensated by the MDF and/or the receiving company.

African Students For Liberty (ASFL) is thrilled to announce its 2017 Regional
Conferences between October and November 2017 with the theme “Creating Wealth through Free Markets” in Kenya, Nigeria, and Tanzania.

African Students For Liberty is a continent-wide organization that promotes the ideas of
individual and economic freedom to students across Africa, with a membership base of over
6,000 students and over 200 trained leaders who commit to a year-long engagement.
ASFL has its presence in 22 African countries, thus making it the largest libertarian
organization in Africa. Its mission is to identify, develop and support the next generation of
African advocates for individual and economic freedom.

The ASFL Regional Conference experience is one of its kind that cannot be matched by any
other student organization in the world. They present a weekend long of learning about the
classical liberal ideas from the best pro-liberty advocates in Africa, debates by participants,
presentations on our achievement in advocating for free markets and liberty this far,
networking between participants and socials where you get to make new friends!
