Applications are now open for the 2024/2025 Bank of Tanzania Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere Memorial Scholarship Fund announces ten (10) fully funded scholarships opportunities for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The Fund was established by the Bank of Tanzania on 12th October 2009 in commemorating the great achievements of the Father of our Nation Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere. It is primarily dedicated for sponsoring undergraduate female students with outstanding academic achievement to pursue Science and Mathematics studies in Tanzanian accredited universities with the aim of promoting academic excellence of the students in respective fields. The Fund also sponsors male and female Tanzanians to pursue undergraduate studies in the fields of Science, Mathematics, Economics, Information Technology, Accounting and Finance.

In addition, the Fund sponsors both male and female best Tanzanians undergraduate students to undertake master’s degree Programmes in the afore-mentioned fields of study.

The scholarships are awarded as follows:

1. Seven (7) Scholarships Undergraduate (Bachelor’s Degree Programmes) The Undergraduate Scholarships are granted to top performers in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (ACSEE) to pursue Undergraduate degree programmes in two categories as follows:

Category A: Science and Mathematics Studies (Female Students only); and
Category B: Science, Mathematics, Information Technology, Economics, Accounting and Finance Studies (Male and Female Students)

Category A: Science and Mathematics Studies (Female Students only) Applications for Scholarships under this category are for female candidates only and shall be required to meet the following criteria:

a) Applicant must be a female Tanzanian citizen who has completed Advanced Level Secondary School Education (ACSEE) in 2024.
b) c) Applicant must be a female student with outstanding academic achievement (Division One) at ACSEE in Science or Mathematics subjects in the 2024 Advanced Level Secondary School Education Examinations; and Applicant must have applied/be admitted to a full time Bachelor’s degree programme in an accredited university within the United Republic of Tanzania.

The programme should commence in 2024/2025 academic year in the field of Science or Mathematics. Category B: Science, Mathematics, Information Technology, Accounting and Finance Studies (Male and Female Students) Economics, Applications for Scholarships under this category are open to both male and female students and shall be required to meet the following criteria:

a) b) Applicant must be a male or female Tanzanian citizen who has completed Advanced Level Secondary School Education in 2024. Applicant must be a student with outstanding academic achievement (Division One) at 2024 ACSEE in Science, Mathematics, Economics, Commerce and Accounting subjects in the Advanced Level Secondary School Examinations.
c) Applicant must have applied/be admitted to a full-time bachelor’s degree programme in an accredited university within the United Republic of Tanzania. The programme should commence in 2024/2025 academic year in any of the following fields: Science, Mathematics, Economics, Information Technology, Accounting or Finance.

Master’s Degree Programmes (Three Scholarships) The master’s degree Scholarships are open to both female and male best students who are to enroll in Master’s degree programmes in the fields of Science, Mathematics, Economics, Information Technology, Accounting and Finance.

Requirements:

a) Applicant must be a Tanzanian citizen and must not be more than thirty-five years. (35) of age and.
b) Applicant must have obtained First Class or Upper Second Class (honours) in the Bachelor’s degree with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) score of 4.0 from an accredited university within the United Republic of Tanzania.
c) Applicant should have completed Bachelor’s degree in studies related to Science, Mathematics, Economics, Information Technology, Accounting or Finance.
d) Applicant must have applied/be admitted to a full time Master’s degree programme in an accredited university within the United Republic of Tanzania.

The programme should commence in 2024/2025 academic year in any of the following fields: Science, Mathematics, Economics, Information Technology, Accounting or Finance.

Benefits

  • Successful applicants are granted full scholarship which covers all university direct cost (tuition fees etc.) and student direct costs (meal, accommodation, book and stationery allowance, field practical training, special faculty requirements etc.) as specified in the respective institutions’ cost structure including a brand-new laptop computer.

Applicants are required to complete Scholarship Application Forms which can be accessed on the BOT website: www.bot.go.tz. Printed forms can be obtained from the Fund Administrator, Bank of Tanzania Sub Head Office, 2 Mirambo Street, 11884, DAR ES SALAAM.

The forms can also be obtained at the Bank of Tanzania Head Office, Dodoma, and Branch Offices (Arusha, Zanzibar, Mwanza, Mbeya and Mtwara).

Applications are now open for the 2024 Women in Conservation Technology Programme. Are you an emerging conservationist looking to leverage new technologies in your conservation practice and to become part of an empowering network of female conservation leaders? Apply now for our Women in Conservation Technology Programme! We’re seeking ten early-career Tanzanian women to participate in a six-month programme that includes two in-person workshops and virtual training courses. These sessions will equip you with foundational skills in technological solutions to overcome pressing wildlife conservation challenges.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applications are now open for ‘Women in Conservation Technology’, a six-month training programme for early career Tanzanian women.
  • Selected participants will explore technological solutions to regional conservation challenges.

This year, the Women in Conservation Technology programme is run in partnership by the Grumeti Fund’s Research and Innovation for the Serengeti Ecosystem (RISE), the WILDLABS Conservation Technology Community, and the international wildlife NGO, Fauna & Flora. 

Eligibility requirements

This programme is designed for early-career women in the conservation field. Applicants must:

  1. Be a Tanzanian national and identify as a woman.
  2. Be at least 18 years old and have completed a Diploma or B.Sc. in Wildlife Conservation, Forestry, Environmental Science, Zoology or a related area.
  3. Have less than three years of professional experience in the conservation field (not including time spent on education).
  4. Be passionate about conservation and curious about technology. Individuals with a demonstrated interest in securing a position as a research assistant, field programme staff, or pursuing an advanced degree related to conservation science are strongly encouraged to apply. 
  5. Individuals already employed with a conservation organization are encouraged to apply, with the support of their supervisor.
  6. Be able to commit to both in-person workshops and participate in virtual programming.
Programme details

Participants will attend two in-person workshops at the RISE field institute in the Serengeti. During the five-month interim between workshops, we will facilitate virtual skills building and professional development training. After completing the programme, participants will have ongoing opportunities to engage with their cohort, the Women in Conservation Technology alumni community, and broader networks of women and conservational professionals across East Africa.

The first workshop, scheduled for June 3-7 2024 (arrive June 2 and depart June 8), will offer a hands-on introduction to hardware and software tools currently used for wildlife monitoring, wildlife protection, and human-wildlife mitigation. Led by field experts, this workshop will also include leadership training and networking sessions where participants can connect with established female leaders in the East African conservation technology sector.

Benefits

  • Up to ten participants will be funded for in-country travel and on-site accommodation during the two in-person workshops. Contributions to childcare costs during these sessions are possible. 
  • Participants are required to attend the complete range of programme dates (workshop 1: June 2-8; workshop 2: December 3-7) and must submit a letter of support from their current supervisor acknowledging that the applicant has secured permission to attend both in-person and virtual trainings.
  • A certificate will be issued upon completion.

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) is inviting applications from civil society organizations (CSOs) from across Africa with a special emphasis on Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia to join the Health Security Budget Advocacy Academy for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to strengthen civil society capacity for budget advocacy in the Africa region.

GHAI in partnership with Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) have been collaborating on the Prevent Epidemics program to raise public demand and political will for increased and sustained domestic resource mobilization for epidemic preparedness. GHAI’s country-led advocacy approach brought together policy leaders, civil society organizations and media in support of epidemic preparedness as a national priority in need of adequate and reliable funding.

Drawing from the lessons learned since 2018, GHAI developed the Budget Advocacy Toolkit for Epidemic Preparedness: Facilitator’s Guide a step-by-step course for facilitators to teach epidemic preparedness advocacy techniques to officials in government and civil society organization advocates. The Facilitator’s Guide was developed based on GHAI’s Budget Advocacy Toolkit for Epidemic Preparedness to illustrate the program’s advocacy approach and provide learning tools to bring Prevent Epidemics budget advocacy to scale in multiple countries through workshops and potentially online learning platforms.

Requirements

  • GHAI is seeking civil society organizations in Africa with a special emphasis on Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia who have a well-developed understanding of their country’s government and advocacy landscape.
  • Interested CSOs will have some experience in budget and national level advocacy, especially as it relates to mobilizing domestic resources for health-related issues.
  • Organizations with strong interest/experience in epidemic preparedness are strongly encouraged to apply.

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarships 2024 for young Africans (Funded Study and Research in Germany)

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung awards scholarships to international students from Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia to study at one of the over 400 universities in Germany. The Scholarship program is aimed at international students and graduates who have acquired a university degree and who intend to complete postgraduate or master studies, doctoral studies or a research fellowship of at least three semesters at a university in Germany.

Requirements

 Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung are looking for students, who
  • have a university degree,
  • prove above average academic performance,
  • are no older than 35 when applying,
  • have good knowledge of the German language (B1* or B2 level),
  • are actively engaged in voluntary work,
  • plan to study a minimum of 4 semesters at a university in Germany,
  • possess a broad general education and distinct interest in political issues,
  • have a positive attitude towards democracy and human rights,
  • are open to develop their personal points of view and practice tolerance, and
  • are highly motivated and able to convince us of their goals in life.
  • Sufficient knowledge in German (level B2) is obligatory for all scholars before the beginning of their university studies in Germany. In exceptional cases, we financially support German language courses in Germany to achieve B2 level as preparation for your studies in Germany.

The standard funding periods are two years (Master) respectively three years (PhD). Apart from the monthly scholarship, the scholars obtain access to a worldwide network of over 14,000 alumni, a broad seminar program and personal mentoring.

Master students

Please download and fill out the application form and attach the following documents:

  • A meaningful CV including details about your previous voluntary work or social commitment.
  • Motivation letter.
  • Copies of your examination certificates in German translation if the originals are not in English.
  • Copies of your studies performance records if you have been studying at a University in Germany.
  • Proof of German language skills (B 2).
  • An academic letter of recommendation: This letter should provide information about your academic qualifications and potential; it should not be older than two months. The author has to be a university professor or teacher holding a doctoral degree.
  • A letter of recommendation concerning the applicant’s personality: This letter should focus on your personality and interests as well as your values and social commitment. The author cannot be the same as the one providing the academic letter of recommendation.
  • A proof of your voluntary work, if available.
  • A certificate of admission or matriculation from your university in Germany, if available.
PhD students

If you are applying for a PhD-Scholarship, please include additionally the following documents:

  • A detailed description of your doctoral thesis: This exposé, written in German or English (4-5 pages), should outline the central research question of your proposed project, its scientific relevance, your theoretical approach and the motives behind your choice of the research subject. It should also contain a work and time schedule and a bibliography.
  • A second academic letter of recommendation: This second letter should be written by the supervisor of your doctoral thesis, providing you already have one. It replaces the letter of recommendation concerning the applicant’s personality.
  • A written confirmation from the intended faculty or department stating that the admission to the doctoral program is unconditional, if already available.

The Goethe-Institut Tanzania is thrilled to announce an open call for project proposals that push the boundaries of immersive art. We are seeking innovative and imaginative ideas that create transformative and multisensory experiences, blurring the lines between art, audience, and environment.

Immersive art has the power to transport viewers into captivating and interactive realms, engaging them on a deeply personal and emotional level. Through this open call, we aim to support projects that utilize technology, space design, performance, and other artistic elements to create immersive experiences that challenge perceptions, evoke emotions, and foster connections.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Open to contemporary cultural practitioners based in Tanzania. All disciplines are welcome.
  • Participation is open to regional or international participants as long as at least one project partner is based in Tanzania.
  • Production funds can be supplemented by sponsors, which should be shared with the Goethe-Institut Tanzania’s programs team.

ASSESSMENT & CRITERIA

Each proposal will be assessed based on the applicants’ proposal and the quality of the application. Relevant areas of consideration include:

  • artistic innovation
  • quality and cohesiveness of the proposal
  • relevance to contemporary discourses
  • feasibility of the proposal

HOW TO APPLY

UNESCO Kulturweit Tandem Exchange Program 2024 for young Africans (Fully Funded)

kulturweit is the international voluntary service for german cultural and educational foreign policy.

With kulturweit-Incoming, the German Commission for UNESCO invites young people from Cameroon, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania and Togo to spend three months from the end of February to the end of May 2024for culture and nature, education and sport in Germany. The places where the participants sit in for three months include UNESCO project schools, biosphere reserves and world heritage sites, theatres, museums and foundations, sports and cultural clubs, universities and Goethe Institutes. The project is carried out subject to the allocation of funds by the donor. During their internship, the participants support their assignment locations, for example in event organization, in public relations or implement projects with children and young people.

Eligibility Requirements

  • People can participate who – are of legal age in their home country at the time of the internship (18 years or older), – have their center of life in one of these countries: Cameroon, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania and Togo,
  • Proven good knowledge of German (min . Language level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference),
  • Are in good health for the stay abroad,
  • Have a valid passport to apply for a Schengen visa, – and want to volunteer in the areas of culture, nature, education or sport

The kulturweit team of the German UNESCO Commission carries out a pre-selection within four to six weeks. After this first stage of selection, all candidates receive an email concerning the progress of their application. At this time, refusals or positive intermediate decisions are sent to the candidates who will be taken into account in the second phase of the selection process.

The  DECONFINING Project Open Call For Artistic Residencies In Poland And Tanzania

Requirements

  • Artists working with moving images and with documented artistic experience (works, exhibitions, projects, etc.).
  • coming from or based in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Kenya, Poland, Rwanda, Slovakia, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia,
  • with a working knowledge of English.
  • Availability to travel on research residencies (artists from Europe to Tanzania in January 2024; artists from Africa to Poland in June 2024);
  • ability to create moving images according to an agreed timeframe;
  • proven experience;
  • the working language of the project is English, so communicative knowledge of this language is required. (Moving image works can be created in the languages of the participants).

In honor and inspiration of leadership ideas of the Late Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, the Founding Father of The United Republic of Tanzania, who was one of the notable sons of Africa, The Mwalimu Nyerere Pan-African Young Leaders Fellowship program envisions at nurturing, mentoring, training, challenging, engaging, defining, and transforming the young generation of African leaders into responsible and dedicated true Pan-African leaders of the continent who will propagate Unity, Peace and People-Centered Development. This fellowship offers a unique opportunity for 60 young leaders from different countries of Africa to learn, grow, and collaborate with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds in addressing challenges of Africa.

This program is convened in Tanzania every November, in line with the African Youth Month. The 2nd cohort of the program is slated on November 2023 and young people are invited to show their interest to the program by making this first application. The program is organized by The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation – MNF, in partnership with the United Nations Institute of Training and Research – UNITAR and in collaborations with Tanzania Government through Prime Minister’s Office, Labour, Youth, Employment and Person’s with Disabilities; The Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports – Zanzibar; and Africa-Asia Youth Foundation.

The Empowering women and boosting livelihoods through agricultural trade (EWAT): Leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a project co-implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Trade Centre (ITC). It aims to support formal and informal women producers, processors, traders, women’s cooperatives, and associations to take advantage of the opportunities created by the AfCFTA in agriculture and agro-processing value chains.

The EWAT programme is delighted to announce a call for applications for a three-day in-person trade facilitation training that is set to take place in Dar es Salaam from 21 – 23 August 2023.

Selection Criteria

  • The applicant is either a woman producer, processor, businessowner, or trader in the agrifood sector;
  • The representative commits to attend all three days of the workshop;
  • The representative attending the workshop has good proficiency of English.

FAO and ITC will:

  • Facilitate the trade facilitation workshop;
  • Provide two coffee breaks and lunches over all three days;
    *If the selected candidate lives outside Dar es Salaam, the project will provide transportation and/or accommodation (more information will be shared after successful candidates have been notified)

General responsibilities of participant:

  • The selected candidate must complete all evaluation forms issued by FAO and ITC. These forms are provided after the event and are critical to the project’s reporting purposes.
  • The selected candidate grants permission to FAO and ITC to use photos taken during the workshop in its communications material;
  • The selected candidate agrees to complete additional evaluation forms that may be issued before the end of the project in December 2023.

Boost Up is a three-part startup support programme organised by the Southern Africa Innovation Collective (SAIC) in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. The programme targets startups that use technology and innovation to solve a societal challenge and are looking for skills that could help them to pitch their business and become more investment-ready. 

The Boost Up series comprises Set Up training events, Stand Up pitch competitions, and the Scale Up incubation programme. 

Requirements

  • Your startup is a registered business located in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, or Zambia.
  • Technology and innovation play a key role in your business model to address a societal challenge in Southern Africa.
  • You have a scalable business model.

Stand Up pitch competitions  

At Boost Up Stand Up, committed startups who are eager to make an impact, have a scalable business model, and want to become more investable will compete in national pitching competitions in their countries. Connected Hubs representatives will select about 10 startups per country from the Set Up participantZAs that completed the training and invite them to pitch at Stand Up. At the pitching competitions, panels of expert judges will select the top startups to advance to interviews. After the interviews, one to two promising startups per country will be selected to take part in the Boost Up Scale Up incubator. 

Scale Up incubation programme  

Boost Up Scale Up is an incubation programme for impact-driven startups eager to become more investable. Scale Up includes an online incubation programme (September – November) and an on-site Bootcamp in Nairobi in Kenya.

Every January, the German Bundestag invites politically and socially committed university graduates from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to a scholarship program in Berlin.

In cooperation with the Freie Universität, the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and the Technische Universität Berlin, the German Bundestag awards up to 120 scholarships for young university graduates from 50 nations every year.

The idea

  • Since 2020, the German Bundestag has been offering a scholarship program for talented and politically interested young university graduates from South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Starting in the 2024 program year, committed young people from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda who are interested in the German parliamentary system and who are actively committed to democratic values ​​in their home countries will also be able to take part.
  • In a four-week compact program, up to 16 scholarship holders can get to know the German parliamentary system and political decision-making processes in the German Bundestag up close.

Experience parliamentary democracy in Germany!

Every January, the German Bundestag invites politically and socially committed university graduates from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to a scholarship program in Berlin.

The program

  • The program takes place annually from January 1st to 31st.
  • The core of the program is a one-week internship in the office of a member of the German Bundestag.
  • For this purpose, knowledge of parliamentary democracy and the workings and function of parliament is imparted in a compact preparation. In addition, the issues of a pluralistic society, the protection of minorities and a culture of remembrance are addressed as a political mandate. A workshop on project management is intended to help people develop their own project ideas with the aim of promoting democracy and civil society in the respective countries of origin.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizenship of a participating country
  • younger than 30 years at the beginning of the scholarship on January 1st
  • completed university studies
  • Good knowledge of the German language (at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
  • Pronounced interest in political contexts and social/political commitment

Benefits

  • The scholarship includes a monthly payment of 700 euros, free accommodation, and health, accident and liability insurance. It also covers the cost of travel to and from Berlin. The International Parliamentary Scholarship programme is funded by the German Bundestag.

The scholarship programme “Leadership for Africa” (LfA) aims to support the academic qualification and advancement of young refugees and national scholars from  Ethiopia, Uganda, Somalia, South-Sudan or Tanzania at higher education institutions in Germany.

Objective

The scholarship programme “Leadership for Africa” (LfA) aims to support the academic qualification and advancement of young refugees and national scholars from Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda at higher education institutions in Germany. In times of conflicts and displacement in various African countries, this programme intends to contribute to the education of future leaders, who will be essential for the further development of their home countries. “Leadership for Africa” offers scholarships for Master studies in Germany to qualified applicants in all fields of study except for medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, the arts and architecture. All “Leadership for Africa” scholarship holders benefit from a complementary training programme in good governance, civil society, and career development. The mandatory programme must be completed in addition to the regular studies.

Requirements

The programme targets two groups:
1) Highly qualified refugees who hold refugee status and fulfil the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany.
Applicants must fulfil the following conditions:

  • Holding refugee status in their host countries, being granted before 3rd of April, 2022
  • Country of asylum must be either Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda
  • Completed Bachelor’s degree at the time of application

2) Highly qualified graduates from Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda who fulfil the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany.

Duration of the funding

  • German language course (up to 6 months) in Germany before the start of the study programme, including the coverage of the test fees for a German language certificate (TestDaF or DSH test), pocket money and accommodation (only during the language course). The DAAD decides whether to fund participation and for how long depending on German language skills and study requirements. Participation in a language course is compulsory.
  • Monthly scholarship rate payments of 934 EURO

International Journalists‘ Programmes (IJP) Southern African Journalists’ Bursary Programme 2023 in Germany (3.000 Euro Stipend)

International Journalists’ Programmes (IJP) offer a bursary to up to six young Southern African (SADC-Member States: Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe + Kenia) and up to five young German journalists. For two months the Southern African delegates will have the chance to work in Germany. They will be integrated into the day-to-day journalism of their host newsroom while also researching stories for their home media.

It is assumed that all candidates have a strong command of the English language. German language abilities are an advantage but are not mandatory.

The Southern African-German Journalists’ Programme is a multiyear effort to shape an integrated understanding of the other country and region and to foster relations between Africa and Germany. It has been offered as a response to concerns about an increasing political and cultural detachment between Africa and Europe. The bursary is intended to enable young journalists to gain valuable insights into the political, economical, cultural as well as the social fabric of the host country.

The bursary is named in honour of the former Federal President Horst Köhler and his exemplary dedication to the intensification of German-African relations.

Requirements

  • For all selected IJP fellows the programme starts with an introductory conference. This will allow the participants from Southern Africa to familiarise themselves with the host country. After that they will work for several weeks with media houses before going out to undertake individual research within Germany.
  • Applicants are asked to submit their preferences for the newspaper, radio or TV station or news agency they would like to work with. The possible location will be chosen by the IJP organisers in dialogue with each delegate. It is expected that former and new participants assist one another with regard to accommodation and contacts.

Benefits

  • The Southern African delegates receive a fixed payment of 3,000 Euro. This is expected to cover most of their travel, accommodation and living expenses. No further payments will be made: delegates are expected to use their own funds for any further costs. Payment for their work with the host media is not envisaged.
  • To receive the full grant participants are obliged to write a report of at least three pages and provide copies of their published journalistic work after returning home.

Application Procedure

All journalists from Southern Africa (SADC Member States and Kenia) between the age of 25 and 40 who regularly work for a media organisation can apply.

1. Enclose a CV with a passport photograph.

2. Write a 800 word essay addressing the following topics:

  • Why you would like to work in Germany
  • What you expect from IJP and what you think you can contribute to it?
  • What are the 3 research topics you want to pursue during the fellowship?
  • What role you expect to play at your home media in the future?
  • How you will spend the bursary?

3. Include a one-page resume detailing your education and work experience, your standard of German and English (copies of certificates/ e.g. Goethe Institut/Toefel), plus 2 copies of articles written by you (TV and radio journalists must type up their reports since no audio or video tapes can be considered)

4. A journalistic reference from your editor or head of department is required (freelancers should submit a reference from a senior journalist). It should also guarantee your leave of absence for the duration of the program.

The develoPPP Ventures Ideas Competition 2023 for African Entrepreneurs

DEG Impulse gGmbH and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with funds from the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), support young companies to scale innovative business models in Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania that create positive impact and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Suitable start-ups to be funded through develoPPP Ventures are selected during an open ideas competition. This takes place twice a year and is open to all start-ups that meet the conditions for participation. Depending on the target country, the funding contract is concluded with one of the two implementing partners, DEG Impulse gGmbH or Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

The develoPPP Ventures ideas competition takes place twice a year for six weeks at the end of each quarter (June and December). 

Requirements

• The company is registered in Ghana, Kenya or Tanzania OR plans to register there prior to the investment
• The company is privately owned and profit-oriented
• At least one annual financial statement is provided
• A viable business plan and a financial plan
• The company is operative and has generated first revenues from operating activities (Proof of Concept)
• The company should not have acquired more than a maximum of €2 million in funding to date

Funding Conditions

• DEG Impulse and GIZ provide grant co-financing of up to EUR 100,000 (and a top-up of EUR 100,000 for successful Ventures in a potential second phase)
• Matching funds equaling the amount of the grant financing must be provided by the company in the form of cash injection (from sponsors, investors); At least half of these required matching funds need to be injected as fresh equity
• The use of funds takes place in the country where the company is registered, Ghana, Kenya or Tanzania (conclusion of contract will only be possible with a locally registered entity)
• The investment proposal is financially sound, and the purpose of funding is clearly defined
• Entirely commercial financing of the investment project is not possible at this point (subsidiarity)

Selection Process:

  • The initial selection is made based on the application forms that can be handed in during regular ideas competitions (May 15 to
    June 30 and November 15 to December 31).
    • Women-led start-ups and start-ups promoting gender equality are especially encouraged to apply (refer to the criteria of the
    2X Challenge)
    • Companies passing this first stage will be invited to pitch in front of the DEG Impulse/GIZ selection committee

Program Details

In the kulturweit tandem, two participants from an African country and two from Germany deal with the history of colonialism and its effects on the present. Together you will develop projects against racism that you can implement in theatres, museums and schools, in clubs, initiatives or in companies in Germany.

Requirements

  • If the center of your life is in Germany, Kenya, Madagascar or Tanzania and if you are of legal age. 
  • Basic language skills in German, French or English are required. 
  • In addition, very good knowledge of one of these three languages.

  • You are of legal age and live in Germany or one of the participating African countries.
  • You must have basic knowledge of German, French or English. You should have very good knowledge of one of the three languages.

Electric South, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) invite you to apply and participate in the new World Heritage Futures Lab: Southern and Eastern Africa Edition.

The “World Heritage Futures Lab: Southern and Eastern Africa Edition” has been conceived as part of “The Next 50”, a year-long interdisciplinary reflection on the future of World Heritage organized in the context of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. The aim of the project is to ensure an increased appreciation and understanding of the rich World Heritage in Southern and Eastern Africa. It will harness XR technology to develop and disseminate new narratives, and engage digital content and products on World Heritage sites in the two regions.

The lab will enhance participants’ capacities in immersive digital technologies, key principles of UNESCO World Heritage Convention and interpretation of World Heritage values in Southern and Eastern Africa.

The project will continue in 2023 to provide production funding and exhibition opportunities for innovative immersive media content around Southern and Eastern African World Heritage, subject to further funding.

Requirements

  • World Heritage Futures Lab is looking for creative technologists from each of the eligible countries: Botswana, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe to participate in a 3-day ideas development lab in Cape Town, South Africa, in December 2022.
  • The creative technologists will work with community representatives living in and around World Heritage sites selected by Electric South and UNESCO.

The “Women Innovators in WASH” is an incubation program aiming to support women entrepreneurs in Africa and Latin America with an innovative business project in the water, sanitation and hygiene sectors.

The Women Innovators in WASH Incubation Program’s overall goal is to sustainably improve access to safe and affordable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) products and services for communities living in Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Tanzania, South Africa as well as Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia.

The program will support 50 women-led startups in the target countries with high-growth potential businesses in any of the WASH sectors and position them to scale their impact and reach more underserved communities by the end of the program. 

WASH is an acronym that stands for “water, sanitation, and hygiene”. Together, we want to support you to develop and scale your innovative solutions to any of the following WASH challenges:

It provides education and economic opportunity to young women between 18 and 24 years from underserved communities who have completed high school education but are unable to further their education due to financial constraints.

codeHive is looking to recruit 100 highly motivated young women from Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and the refugee communities in Kenya, to join the codeHive class of 2023.

Students in the codeHive program receive on demand technology and non-cognitive skills. Students get the opportunity to attend and network at technology conferences and workshops.

All students are required to develop market-ready prototypes, pitch to prospective employers, and secure a three-month paid internship.

The Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH) and the Institut Français de Recherche en Afrique (IFRA) of Nairobi offer a short-term fellowship of three month in France for postdoc researchers from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Eastern Congo (Kivu) who have presented their thesis from 2017.

This research stay is designed to enable researchers to conduct research studies in France: field enquiries, library and archives work. 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Nationality: This program is open to researchers originating from Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda Eastern Congo (Kivu) (nationality is a requirement) and affiliated with an institution of higher education and research or a public or private research institute based in one of these countries. 
  • Educational Degree: Applicants must have obtained their PhD doctorate and presented their thesis from 2017.
  • Theme: Applicants must be involved in research in social and human sciences.
  • French host institution: Before submitting their application, applicants will have to find a French research institution to host them for the time of their stay. Applicants will have to provide a letter from the hosting institution addressed to the FMSH and the IFRA expressing the institution’s willingness to host the applicant during the time of fellowship and explaining the work conditions offered.

Benefits

  • Laureates will receive a monthly stipend of 1 600€ (paid at the beginning of each month of stay). This financial contribution is intended to cover expenditure such as transport and accommodation costs.
  • Besides, the FMSH and the IFRA provide support for visa and logistical support to organise the stay (possibility to have a workspace, letter for the libraries…).

The East Africa Emerging Public Interest Advocates Programme 2023 for young legal professionals (Fully Funded)

The East Africa Emerging Public Interest Advocates Programme for young legal professionals is a flagship fellowship programme by the Center for Strategic Litigation that empowers young advocates through rigorous skills-based training and practical experience in public interest litigation.

The goal of the programme is to build the next generation of public interest advocates in East Africa who share a commitment to and passion for promoting democratic values.

This comes from the realization that there is a limited number of active public interest litigants as most lawyers prefer careers in private and other fields of law.

Requirements:

  • The fellowship provides up to 30 outstanding young advocates from Kenya, Tanzania (mainland), Tanzania (Zanzibar), Uganda, South Sudan, Burundi and Rwanda with an opportunity to learn from public interest litigation and advocacy gurus, academics, and practitioners, both in class and in court for six (6) months under the following carefully designed curriculum.
  • Be a citizen of the East African Community Member states and expected to reside in the region during the term of the fellowship.
  • Be able to start the programme by 13 February, 2023 and commit throughout all phases of the programme.
  • By February 2023, be a graduate lawyer admitted to the bar with between one and five years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrate passion for human rights, rule of law and a commitment to social justice.
  • Be passionate about working with the community in pursuit of justice.
  • Be well versed with the human rights and constitutional context in respective countries and the region as a whole.
  • Be prepared to work and pursue a PIL casework during the programme.
  • Be prepared to work with teams and under a mentor to guide your professional growth.
  • Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format.

Benefits

Residential Training

The training programme is inaugurated by a one (1) month intensive skill-based training programme that combines presentations, mock trials, public lectures, court visits, and legal aid service.

Practicum​

After completion of the residential programme, the fellows spend 4.5 months in the field where they are closely guided by experienced mentors to put in practice what they learnt in the residential programme to build and implement a project case.​

Closing Seminars

The last one to two weeks of the programme are spent with the fellows engaging in a series of seminars, presenting their cases, their progress, the lessons learnt and the way forward.​

The fellowship programme for Cohort 4 is expected to start on 13 February, 2023 and continue through and conclude on 28 January, 2024.

The DW Akademie Film Development Fund offers a one-year fellowship program for filmmakers working on the development of their feature-length documentary, fiction or hybrid films.   

The DW Akademie Film Development Fund is searching for filmmakers in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda for a one-year fellowship program. Potential applicants who have made at least one film and have a concept or script for a feature-length documentary, fiction or hybrid film qualify. The program is designed to take proposed films through the development stage and make them ready for production. 

Eligibility Requirements

To be able to apply, you must fulfill two main eligibility requirements:

  • Be a citizen and a permanent resident of the country for which the call for application is open. If you are from the country but live in the diaspora, you are unfortunately not eligible.
  • Have a track record as a filmmaker. This means that we require that you have released at least one production either internationally or locally (e.g., theatrical release, screening in a national or international festival, TV broadcast, digital third-party broadcast, streaming/VOD).  This can also be a short film.

Eligible formats are narrative, documentary or hybrid feature-length films (at least 60 minutes) currently in development.  

The fund focuses on the development stage of a film’s overall production. This is the phase for creating ideas, writing screenplays, acquiring financing, contracting rights, etc.  

Development activities eligible for funding include, but are not limited to: work on a screenplay; research (travel); production of a mood reel; participation in labs (lab and travel fees); acquiring financing for production (work on further funding applications, travel to festivals, etc.); location and/or character/protagonist scouting, etc.  

Your project is eligible to receive support if:

  • It is a narrative, documentary or hybrid feature film (more than 60 minutes).
  • It is currently in development

The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with Science Africa, is hosting a three-day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, from 24th-26th October 2022. The goal is to equip journalists to report on key road safety issues and to prepare them to train others on this crucial topic. 

Applications from journalists and media trainers from Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Ethiopia and Tanzania will be prioritised. After the training, participants may apply for grants to support either reporting or training on road safety.

The WHO Road Safety Reporting Initiative aims to help journalists tell more and better stories that help reduce deaths from crashes on the roads. In partnership with leading journalists’ networks and partners in the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety, the initiative offers training and mentoring for journalists, as well as resources, data, contacts and links to key resources.
