2016 National Geographic Society /Buffett Award for Leadership in African Conservation.

The National Geographic Society is currently soliciting nominations for the 2016 Buffett Award for Leadership in African Conservation.

Since 2002, the award has honored the unsung heroes of conservation, celebrating the recipient’s achievements and supporting ongoing work in conserving nature or culture in Africa. The award includes a $25,000 grant.

Past recipients of the National Geographic Society/Buffett Award have conducted

conservation research on elephants and the bush-meat trade in Tanzania,
worked to ensure that local communities in Uganda benefit from conservation initiatives,
developed sustainable agricultural practices for small farmers in Cameroon, and more.

Nomination Process:

Award recipients are chosen from nominations submitted to National Geographic.
After nominations are screened by advisors and other conservation experts, a selection of names is forwarded to the Howard G. Buffett Foundation for review.
Final selection is made by the National Geographic Society.

The award was established through a generous gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Mr. Buffett is a farmer, businessman, conservationist, and photographer. He serves on the NGS Council of Advisors and in 2007 was named Ambassador Against Hunger by the UN World Food Program.

How to Submit Nominations

To submit a nomination, please complete the online nomination form below, including a description of achievements that merit the award.
Be sure to include details about the nominee’s major conservation successes in the face of unique challenges. Nominations must be received no later than January 22, 2016.

The award will be presented at National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2016.

2015 African Economic Research Consortium PhD Thesis Research Awards (US$USD 6,000)

Each year African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) offers a limited number of awards with a maximum value of US$6,000 towards PhD thesis research.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for consideration,

The request must come from an African national enrolled in a doctoral degree programme in Economics at a recognized university.
He/she must be in the research and/or writing phase of the dissertation.

Requests should be supported by the following documentation:

Evidence of an attachment to, or sponsorship by, an institution in sub-Saharan Africa engaged in economic management, research and/or training in the public sector.
Evidence of registration in a recognized PhD programme in Economics.
An approved research proposal, complete with clearly defined objectives, substantial literature review and a well-outlined analytical framework, as well as pertinent research methodology.
A statement of limitations and policy relevance of the study.
A letter of reference from the thesis supervisor.
A detailed budget including evidence of any additional financial support that may be necessary to complete the programme.
Curriculum vitae.

Application Processing:

Upon the receipt of the proposal and the supporting documentation, the proposal is sent to two external reviewers, who comment on the adequacy of the proposal.
In the event that the reviewers suggest corrections to be made and give positive feedback, the comments from the reviewers are sent to the students to incorporate the suggested corrections and then resubmit the proposal for a final review.
Once the proposal is cleared by at least two reviewers, the reviewed proposals and the comments of the external reviewers are presented to the Training Sub-Committee of AERC during the Biannual Research Workshops (held in June and December), who go through the recommendations of the reviewers and make recommendation to the Programme Committee to approve for funding.
It is after this that research grants can be awarded.

Youth are invited to pitch their idea/initiative which engages youth in agriculture and food systems in a 3 minute video outlining how their initiative will help end hunger and malnutrition. All videos will be featured on the Youth Idea Incubator page of the CFS website.

Ten youth will be selected to deliver their pitch in person to a panel comprised of inspiring individuals working on youth engagement and food security and nutrition, including entrepreneurs, social leaders, academics, and others.
Youth will receive feedback on their ideas and establish contacts with a network of actors engaged in food security and nutrition.
They will also be invited to participate in the full CFS plenary week.

The objective of the event is to facilitate capacity development of youth through feedback from inspiring individuals on their proposals to address food security and nutrition and networking opportunities with key stakeholders.

CFS is looking for youth who are tackling food insecurity and malnutrition. Are you:

How to Participate:

Benefits:

Following the festival, all Points North Fellows will receive a ticket to the Cinema Eye Honors (held in mid-January), an invitation to CIFF’s annual Cinema Eye Nominees Party and two nights of accommodations in New York.

The Alliance for Science at Cornell University is now accepting applications for its inaugural round of agricultural science journalism fellowships. The fellowship seeks to promote in-depth, contextualized reporting on topics/issues related to food security, crop production, biotechnology, and sustainable agricultural practices.

The Alliance for Science is a communications initiative with the mission to promote access to scientific innovation as a means of enhancing food security, improving environmental sustainability and raising the quality of life globally.

There are two fellowship tracks:

Individual Track: One to three award (s) of $5,000 – $15,000 to individual journalists

Collaborative Track: Award of $25,000 to a collaborative team of two individuals, one from a developing country and one from a developed country.

• Indication of Fellowship Track (Individual or Collaborative)

Miss.Africa Initiative led by DCA Academy, is announcing a Seed Fund in Africa that will a small grants to support women and girls in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields to launch or expand their own initiatives that will increase their digital opportunities in IT related training, jobs and leadership roles.

The program is interested in learning about successful activities that are currently supporting women and girls in STEM, and through this effort, Miss Africa identify how we might support scalability and their impacts.

The 2015 Seed Grant for the amount Five Thousand US dollars ($5,000) will assist the winning initiative to start or expand their capacity.

ELIGIBILITY

To apply for a Miss.Africa Seed Fund grant applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

– Current resident of an African country (including North and Sub-Saharan Africa).
– Application must be submitted in English.
– Applying as an individual (at least 18 years of age), or a representative of a non-governmental organization (NGO) or social enterprise based in Africa.
– Ability to demonstrate previous experience conducting activities supporting women and girls in computer science or STEM fields.
– Commitment to developing and contributing to a virtual community for supporting women and girls initiatives.
– Demonstrated leadership potential (references will be required for those applying for leadership funds).
– Proposed projects MUST have a tangible impact for women and girls in computer science and/or STEM- related fields.

PROJECTS
Preference will be given to projects that target under-served populations and locations, take a collaborative approach, have a high potential for growth and present an innovative use of technology.

Projects eligible for grant funding include, but are not limited to:

– Computer science workshops and trainings for women and girls

The Rhodes Scholarships are postgraduate awards supporting outstanding all-round students at the University of Oxford, and providing transformative opportunities for exceptional individuals. The Rhodes Trust provides the Rhodes Scholarships in partnership with Second Century Founder, John McCall MacBain and other generous benefactors.

Established in 1903 under the will of Cecil Rhodes, the Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international graduate scholarship program in the world. Eligibility criteria for the Rhodes Scholarship

The following eligibility criteria apply to all applicants for the Rhodes Scholarships:

Citizenship & residency: Each applicant must fulfil the citizenship and residency requirements of the Rhodes constituency for which they are applying. Please check the detailed information carefully via the country links.
Africa: Kenya,Southern Africa (including South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and Swaziland), Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Age: Age limits vary between constituencies and range from a minimum age limit of 18 to a maximum of 28 by 1 October of the year following selection. In most constituencies, the age limit is 24 or 25.
Education: All applicants must have achieved academic standing sufficiently advanced to assure completion of a bachelor’s degree by the October following election. 2015 Ian Perry Scholarship Prize for Young Photo Journalists ( £4,000 Prize)

Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years of age. Aidan Sullivan, then picture editor, and Ian’s friends and family created the Ian Parry Scholarship in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.

Each year, there is an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24.

Requirements

Entrants must submit a portfolio and a brief synopsis of a project they would undertake if they won the scholarship.
The prize consists of £3,500 towards their chosen assignment £500 to those awarded Highly Commended and Commended.
There is no fee for entry.

This will be the maiden boot camp of thec, a $100m Pan-African entrepreneurship initiative. The event will take place from July 10 -12, 2015 in Ota, Nigeria.

In what is billed to be the largest ever gathering of emerging entrepreneurs on the continent, the boot camp – which is a major milestone of the flagship programme of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) – will see an interaction between established entrepreneurs from different sectors of industry, and the 1000 selectees of TEEP.

Mr. Elumelu who has been vocal about entrepreneurship-led development and the push for a private sector-driven turnaround of Africa says,

“In empowering these emerging entrepreneurs, we are providing the capital, the networks, the training and support for them to drive economic and social transformation throughout Africa, providing solutions to its problems as well as securing their future and that of generations to come.”

In the build-up to the boot camp, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has engaged the emerging entrepreneurs in a 12-week online training programme that culminates in this thrilling two-day session. The boot camp format will be predominately plenary style sessions from speakers with proven track record in business and leadership. The entrepreneurs will participate in sessions including an open mic with Founder Tony O. Elumelu CON and other captains of industry.

Speaking on the ideals of the programme and the need for the training, Parminder Vir, CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation says,

“We are excited to be pushing the envelope and providing a springboard for this set of emerging African entrepreneurs to take over the world with their innovative ideas, beginning from their local communities. At the end of this boot camp, we want them to have come, seen and be transformed into full-fledged entrepreneurs and ambassadors for Africapitalism.”

The winners represent 51 African countries and territories, as well as a multitude of value adding sectors ranging from agriculture to education to fashion and ICT.

All five African regions – North, East, Southern, Central and West Africa are represented, as well as every state in Nigeria. Additionally, all major language blocs – Anglophone, Francophone, Lusophone, and Arabic Africa. More than anything else, they epitomise the opportunity and promise of Africa.

The Governments of Kenya and the United States are pleased to announce the availability of media accreditation applications for the 2015 GES to be held July 24-26, 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Launched by President Obama in 2009, GES brings together entrepreneurs and investors from across Africa and around the world annually to showcase innovative projects, exchange new ideas, and help spur economic opportunity.

The 2015 GES agenda will focus on generating new investments for entrepreneurs, with a particular focus on women and youth.

The selection of Nairobi as host city for the 2015 GES underscores how Africa — notably Kenya — has become a center for innovation and entrepreneurship. Kenya is a world leader in mobile money systems, like m-pesa, and a driver of innovation through technology research and incubation labs like “iHub.”

The Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival will be held Nov. 26 to 29, 2015 in Doha, Qatar.

Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival was established in 2005, and it is an international event by all standards. Since its first edition, it has become a meeting point for filmmakers and innovators worldwide.

The festival showcases a wide range of documentary films that discuss humanitarian, social, economic, and political issues. This is on top of the support it dedicates to young talents that work hard to have a space for expression and production.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to all TV channels (Arab and non-Arab), production companies, independent filmmakers and cultural, social and media organizations.

Three Competitions

The festival holds three competitions: a major one dedicated for TV channels; production firms; cultural, social, and media institutions; and independent producers.
It comprises three categories: short films, medium films, and long films.
This is in addition to the New Horizon competition that is dedicated to amateur and beginner directors and school pupils.
Awards are given to each category, and directors and winners are awarded too. The first edition included participants from Arab countries only.

• Productions taking part in the Festival competitions are limited to documentary films.
• Films produced only within two years prior to the current festival will be accepted.

• Participating films should either be in Arabic or English. If in Arabic, the films should be subtitled into English. Yet, if in another language, they should be translated, dubbed, or subtitled into English. Also, it is preferable to send the film script if available.

• Participants should send 2 DVD (PAL) copies of the documentary operating on a DVD player.

Aljazeera Awards:

It is offered to each winning film from each of the three categories: Long, Medium, and Short. Each winning film will be granted a cash prize, to be equally shared by the film’s director and producer, as follows:

• The Jury Award

It is offered to each winning film from each of the three categories: Long, Medium and short.

Whether your country has an existing Youth Delegate Programme or you will have to convince your government on the importance of having a youth representative in its delegation to the UN General Assembly, advocate and apply to participate in decision-making of the United Nations.

Participation in decision-making is one of the key priority areas of the United Nations agenda on youth. One form of youth participation at the United Nations is through the inclusion of youth delegates in a country’s official delegation to the United Nations General Assembly and various functional Commissions of the Economic and Social Council.

The youth delegate programme is coordinated by the Focal Point on Youth at the global level, but it is the responsibility of the Member States to establish a youth delegate programme at the national level, and to decide who will represent the young people of their country.

The roles of a youth representative varies from country to country, but normally includes providing input to their delegation on issues related to youth and participate in their delegation’s general work through attending meetings and informal negotiations.

Programme aims to:

• Enhance awareness of the global situation of youth and to increase recognition of their rights and aspirations;

• Promote national youth policies, programmes and coordinating mechanisms as integral parts of social

The International Reporting Project (IRP) is pleased to announce a group reporting trip focusing on health and development issues in Ecuador on October 18-29, 2015.

Ecuador, a country of nearly 16 million, has made major strides in healthcare and development, including dramatic improvements in healthcare efficiency.

Yet many challenges remain. There are discrepancies between the quality of care and resources available at public and private facilities. Residents of rural areas may not receive the resources available in urban centers, and neglected tropical diseases persist.

Fellows on the twelve-day reporting trip will examine a range of issues related to health and development in Ecuador.

Eligibility:

The Ecuador trip is open to innovative journalists, bloggers, influential social media practitioners, and other media professionals. Unfortunately, this trip is not open to students.
Priority will be given to applications from citizens or residents of Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States

Benefits:

The IRP will purchase the fellows’ roundtrip air tickets to Ecuador and will pay for visas, hotel costs, local transportation and several meals.
Fellows who wish to extend their stay after the fellowship will have the option to arrange that at their own expense.
All fellows on the Ecuador trip are required to participate in the sessions arranged for the group program.
Much of the value of a group reporting trip comes from both meetings that IRP arranges and the interactions the fellows have with each other. Some independent reporting time will be included in the schedule.

The Bloomberg Initiative (BI) Grants Program was started in 2006 to support projects that develop and deliver high-impact, evidence-based tobacco control interventions.

The BI Grants Program provides funding to government ministries and agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations, and universities in more than 60 countries.

The Bloomberg Initiative Global Initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries was launched in 2006 with funds from Michael R. Bloomberg. A competitively awarded grants program is an important part of the Initiative. The grants program supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact evidence-based tobacco control interventions.

The grants program is managed by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Tobacco kills more than 14,000 people every day. Unless urgent action is taken, tobacco will kill 8 million people a year by 2030, 80 percent of them in developing countries.

To address this global public health crisis, Michael R. Bloomberg, philanthropist and mayor of New York City, launched a global initiative to fight tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries, where more than two-thirds of the world’s smokers live.

Requirements:

While applications are welcome from all low- and middle-income countries (as categorized by the World Bank), the Initiative places a priority on countries with the greatest number of tobacco users.
Approximately two-thirds of the world’s tobacco users live in fourteen countries: China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Ukraine, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Who can apply for a grant?

Governmental and non-governmental organizations based in eligible countries can apply for grants.

Governmental organizations include, but are not limited to, national Ministries, state/provincial authorities and affiliate offices.
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with relevant advocacy experience aimed at changing or implementing policies including but not limited to civil society organizations and educational institutions.
Applicants must be recognized legal entities capable of entering into contractual arrangements, receiving foreign funds and assuming legal and financial obligations.
NGO applicants cannot be the recipients of financial support from any tobacco product manufacturer or the parent, subsidiary or affiliate of a tobacco product manufacturer.

Funded Projects:

Proposals must focus on achieving policy change that will lead to substantial reductions in tobacco use.
The grants program gives priority to projects that lead to sustainable improvements in tobacco control laws, regulations, policies and programs at the national or sub-national level

Funding:

Proposals can be submitted for grants from US$50,000 up to a maximum amount of US$500,000. Short-term, one-year or two-year project proposals will be considered.

The Queen’s Young Leader Award recognises and celebrates exceptional people aged 18-29 from across the Commonwealth, who are taking the lead in their communities and using their skills to transform lives.

Each year from 2014 to 2018, 60 inspirational young people will be selected to receive an Award and become ‘Queen’s Young Leaders’ – one for every year that The Queen had served as Head of the Commonwealth at the time of her Diamond Jubilee. 2015 is an important year for the global community. This grant provides support for ecologists in Africa to carry out innovative ecological research. The BES recognises that ecologists in Africa face unique challenges in carrying out ecological research and this grant is designed to provide them with support to develop their skills, experience and knowledge base as well as making connections with ecologists in the developed world.

Eligibility and Conditions

Applicants must:

be a scientist and a citizen of a country in Africa or its associated islands,
that is a ‘low-income economy’ or ‘lower-middle-income economy’ according to the

World Bank categorization
have at least an MSc or equivalent degree
be working for a university or research institution in Africa (including field centres, NGOs, museums etc.) that provides basic research facilities
carry out the research in a country in Africa or its associated islands

The proposed work must be completed within 18 months

Benefits:

The maximum value of a grant is £8,000 for research. An additional sum up to £2,000 may be requested to fund travel to help grantees develop connections with other ecologists outside their usual peer group.
Travel funds are available for the applicant to spend time working with ecologists in developed countries where facilities and experience will help the grantee on return to their own institution.

How to Apply:

Applications will only be assessed once the online referee statement of support has been received from the applicant’s institution, and if applying for travel funds, from the overseas host institution.
This referee statement should include why the project is important, what support will be given to the applicant and a statement that any equipment bought for the project will be made available for anyone in the host institution to conduct ecological research.

Applications for this grant must be made using the BES online application form.

When : 16 November – 4 December 2015.

From 16th November to 4th December 2015 the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri in Pemba (Zanzibar, Tanzania) will host the training course in “Tropical Medicine and Global Health”, organized by Ivo de Carneri Foundation in partnership with University of Florence, University Hospital Meyer and Carlo Urbani Association.

The event is also part of the tutorship of the Italian Master in Tropical Medicine and Global health The course is addressed to health professionals (10 from Sub-Saharan Africa and 10 from Italy and other European countries). Scholarships are available for African students and for selected

The course venue is the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri (PHL-IdC) in Pemba Island (Zanzibar,Tanzania), an advanced Scientific Institution equipped with modern equipment and training facilities.

This training stage is unique in the panorama of tropical diseases and international public health tra

ining. It is designed as a practical tool to provide health staff scientific knowledge and skills to tackle the great challenges which are affecting billion of people, e specially in developing countries.

Course goal

The overall goal is to have an overlook of public health challenges, to understand the role of Public

Health Laboratory, and to have a first hand experience in health care in a low-resource country from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Participants

Twenty (20) participants are allowed to participate in the training. Ten (10) applications are reserved for participants from Italy and industrialised countries and other 10 posts are reserved for African applicants.
For the 10 participants from industrialised countries, priority is given to trainees of the Italian Master in Tropical Medicine and Global Health.

Qualifications

required for admission Degree in Medicine, Biology, Pharmacy, Nursing, Diploma/Certificate in health-related subjects.

Good knowledge of written and spoken English, with excellent level of listening and comprehension

Cost: Euro 1.500

Cost of course includes: Tuition Fee, Full Board Accommodation, Transfer by charter flight from Zanzibar to Pemba, one day trip to Vumawimbi Beach through Ngezi Forest.

Cost of course not includes: international flight from the participant’s country of origin, Visa, airport taxes, insurance, personal expenses. A caution deposit of Euro 250 must be anticipated by the selected participants beneficiaries of full scholarship within 30th September 2015.

Full payment by the other participants is due before 30th September 2015

Scholarships:

The trainees of the Master of Tropical Medicine and Global Health will benefit from a partial scholarship and the tuition fee will be 500 Euros only. Two full board scholarships will be offered from AICU to two winners of the Carlo Urbani’s Award (only for candidates from Marche Health Institutions, for details see www.aicu.it).
In addition, based on availability of sponsors,10 full scholarships will be offered to African applicants for coverage of all course’s expenses, except the international flight from the participant’s country of origin to Zanzibar, Visa, airport taxes,insurance, and personal expenses.
In order to avoid late cancellation, a caution deposit of 250 Euros must be anticipated by candidates selected for full scholarships within 30th September 2015.
The caution will be retained in case of cancellation after that date, or it will be refunded to the candidates with full scholarship at their arrival in Pemba.

2015 African Fact-Checking Awards for Journalistic Excellence in Africa (€4,000 Euros Cash Prize)

Are you a reporter for an Africa-based media organisation? Has a report you published or broadcast exposed a claim from a public figure or institution to be misleading or wrong?

The African Fact-Checking Awards are in their second year — the only awards that honour journalism by media based in Africa that exposes misleading claims made by public figures and institutions.

The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony to be held in Africa in November.

The awards are operated in partnership with the African Media Initiative, the largest media industry body on the continent. Funding for the prizes has come from the AFP Foundation, the Shuttleworth Foundation and Africa Check.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible, the entries must be original pieces of fact-checking journalism first published or broadcast between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, by a media house based in Africa.
The work may be published in print or online, broadcast on the radio or television or published in a blog.
The work may have been published or broadcast in any language but, to be eligible for the competition, an accurate translation into either French or English must be made available to the judges.
Current staff of the AFP news agency or Africa Check are not eligible for the competition.

Prize:

A winner and two runners-up will be selected, and announced at an event in Africa in November.
The winner will receive a cash prize of €2000 and the two runners-up a prize of €1000 each.

Selection Criteria

A six-member jury of eminent journalists from Europe and Africa will be formed in June.

All entries sent into the competition before midnight on 31 August 2015 will be sifted to produce a short-list to go to the judges. The entries for the competition will all be judged on the following four criteria.

The significance for wider society of the claim investigated
How the claim was tested against the available evidence
How well the piece presented the evidence for and against the claim
The impact that the publication had on public debate on the topic

From 26 to 28 November, only a few days before the COP21, 5000 young people from all around the world will gather for the 11th Conference of Youth. Not only this event will be one of the biggest gatherings of youth in France, but it will also lead to an unprecedented mobilization in the field of international climate negotiations.

The Conference Of Youth is the gathering of young people occurring every year before the conference of Heads of State on climate (Conference of Parties/COP), organized for the first time in France. This year, the COP21 has a major goal: to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate change.

During 3 days, almost 5000 young people are expected for an unprecedented mobilization, to build a real momentum, and strengthen the visibility of actions and the expertise of young people in favor of a more sustainable and desirable lifestyle.

Eligibility

The call for projects is open to all, whether you are an organisation, a charity, a social enterprise, an educational institute, an individual, as long as you recognise yourself in the message conveyed by the 11th COY.
Priority is given to projects led by young people or driven by an inter-generational purpose.
Each project must possess human and material resources specific to its realization (except for basic furniture).
A list of the required furniture (tables, chairs, projector, etc.) should be sent to the organizers within the same time limit as the applications, otherwise the availability of this equipment will not be guaranteed.
Finally, profit-making activities for commercial gain will not be accepted.

The organization of the COY11 is coordinate by several youth associations with strong environmental engagement: Avenir Climatique, CliMates, Fédération du Scoutisme Français, REFEDD, the movement WARN! and YOUNGO.

2015 Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarships for African Writers (£45,000 Prize)

Applications are now open for the 2015 Miles Morland Foundation Scholarship for African Writers.

It can be difficult for writers, before they become established, to write and to earn a living outside writing at the same time.

To help fill this need the MMF aims to each year award three Morland Writing Scholarships for fiction and one Morland Scholarship for non-fiction.

Eligibility

The Scholarships are open to anyone writing in the English language who was born in Africa or both of whose parents were born in Africa.

Benefits

Grant

Scholars writing fiction will receive a grant of £18,000, paid over the course of twelve months. Scholars writing non-fiction will receive a grant of £27,000, paid over the course of eighteen months.

Mentoring:

Each of the winners will be offered the opportunity to be mentored by an established author or publisher who will give help when sought on the progress of their book and comments as to how it succeeds in meeting its objectives.
Participation in this scheme will be voluntary. It is not the intention of the MMF to act as editor or a publisher.
Scholars will need to find their own agents and publishers although it is to be hoped that over the years the award of a Morland Scholarship will come to be recognised as an incubator of talent.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Scholarship a candidate must submit a piece of published work, or an excerpt from a piece of published work (written in English), of between two and five thousand words to be evaluated by a panel of readers and judges set up by the MMF.
The Scholarships will be awarded based on these submissions although the Foundation may also wish to question certain candidates or ask for other work.
The work submitted will be judged purely on literary merit. It is not the purpose of the Scholarships to support academic or scientific research, or works of special interest such as religious or political writings.
Submissions or proposals of this nature do not qualify.

Scholarship Requirement

The only condition imposed on the Scholars during the year of their Scholarship is that they must write.
They will be asked to submit by e-mail at least 10,000 new words every month until they have finished their book.
The Scholarship will terminate if a Scholar fails to submit the required work on time unless prior authorisation has been received.
The Scholarship is intended for writers who want to write a full-length book of 80,000 words or more.
If the first draft of the book is completed before the year is up, payments will continue while the Scholar edits and refines their work.

Proposed Work

The candidates should submit a brief description of the work they intend to write (200 – 500 words). It should be a new work, not a work in progress. The proposed work must be in English, as must all submissions.

Important Dates:

The Scholarships will be announced in December 2015 and will run for the whole of calendar 2016. The Trustees reserve the right to vary the terms and requirements of the Scholarships at their discretion.

Do you want to be part of a team representing the voice of young people in the Commonwealth?

Nominations are now open for the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) 2015 Elections for its executive team, and will close on 16 July 2015.

The Commonwealth Youth Council is one of the largest and most diverse democratically elected youth-led organisations in the world, representing young people from across the Commonwealth in Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean, the Americas, Africa and Europe. It’s the legitimate and official voice for young people from 53 Commonwealth countries.

To fit the general criteria for nomination, candidates:

must be at least 15 years old at nomination, and be under 30 years for the entire term of office (November 2015-November 2017)
must have a minimum of three years’ experience as a national and regional/international youth leader
should be an experienced youth advocate
must be national of a Commonwealth country, but do not need to be resident in that country.

The elections will coincide with the Commonwealth Youth Forum and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2015. This year’s Youth Forum delegates are shaping national and Commonwealth agendas on topics of particular interest to young people under the theme ‘Adding Global Value…#WhatNext?’

2015 Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Research Fellowship Program for study in Japan (Fully Funded)

Upon the concept of the founder of the Matsumae International Foundation (MIF), “Towards A Greater Understanding of Japan and a Lasting World Peace”, MIF has started the Research Fellowship Program in 1980.

Currently, MIF is receiving application for Research Fellowship Program until the 31st of August 2015.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet all of the following eligibility requirements are invited to submit the required application documents.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (Doctorate) degree, or be recognized by MIF as possessing equivalent academic qualifications.
Applicants must be under 49 years old at the time of application.
Applicants must have sufficient conversational ability in English or Japanese to prevent insurmountable difficulties during their research activities in Japan.
Applicants should not have been in Japan in the past and/or in the present.
Applicants should have firm positions and professions in their home countries, and should return to their countries on completion of their fellowship stay by MIF.
Applicants must be of sound health and not physically handicapped in any way which would not prevent from carrying out research in Japan

Period & Number of Fellowships:

For a period of from three to six months; the number of fellowships is about 20 persons each year.
Applicants indicate the period of Fellowship with the length of stay needed for the Research Project between 3 months to 6 months, and the commencing month and ending month between April 2016

The UN-Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award has been established as a result of a partnership between UN-Habitat, the International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO) together with CDB Orient that aims to reward young inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs.

Young inventors and entrepreneurs are important catalysts for promoting sustainable cities and developing highly skilled talents needed for future urban development. The Award stems from an agreement signed between UN-Habitat and IESCO in April 2013 during the twenty fourth session of the UN-Habitat Governing Council, to launch the “Urban Youth Empowerment and Ecological Safety project”.

The Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award is open to all Young women and men between 15 and 32 years from developing countries and run a youth led for – profit and or nonprofit organization, or a business or entity that aims to improve youth livelihoods and better serve their communities with accomplishment in any of the above Award Categories

2016/2017 NED Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program (Fully Funded- Spend Five Months in Washington DC, USA)

The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is an international exchange program that offers practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world the opportunity to spend five months at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington DC, in order to undertake independent research on democratic challenges worldwide.

While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; conduct research and writing; consider best practices and lessons learned; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates.

Eligibility Requirements:

The fellowship is intended primarily for individuals from developing and aspiring democracies.
Practitioners and journalists should have substantial work experience in their fields, while scholars are expected to have a Ph.D., or academic equivalent, at the time of application.
The program does not support professional training, fieldwork, or students working toward a degree, nor does it provide funding to implement projects in the field.
A working knowledge of English is required for participation in the program.

Benefits:

The program offers research support and facilitates fellows’ outreach to Washington’s advocacy, media, academic, and policy communities.
All fellowships include a monthly payment, health insurance, and roundtrip travel reimbursement. The program does not provide financial assistance for accompanying family or other dependents.

Program Details:

The program runs two five-month fellowship sessions per year, during which fellows are expected to work full time on their projects.

The Program is designed for highly qualified and motivated individuals skilled in areas relevant to the WBG technical/operations such as economics, finance, education, public health, social sciences, engineering, urban planning, agriculture, natural resources and others; as well as to WBG corporate areas such as communications, information technology, human resources and corporate finance.

To be competitive for this highly selective program, candidates need to demonstrate a commitment to development, proven academic success, professional achievement, and leadership capability.

Minimum Requirements

The following are the minimum requirements to be eligible for the Young Professionals Program.

Citizenship of a member country of the World Bank
32 years of age or younger (i.e. born on or after October 1, 1983)
A PhD or Master’s degree and relevant work experience
Fluency in English
Full proficiency in one or more of the WBG’s working languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish is desired but not required
Specialization in a field relevant to the WBG Technical/Operations such as economics, finance, education, public health, social sciences, engineering, urban planning, agriculture, natural resources and others; and other WBG corporate areas such as communications, information technology, human resources and corporate finance.
At least 3 years of relevant professional experience related to development or continued academic study at the doctoral level

Additional Qualifications

To be competitive for the limited number of positions, a combination of the following credentials is highly desirable:

Display a commitment and passion for international development
Possess outstanding academic credentials
Exhibit excellent client engagement and team leadership skills
Have international development country experience (operations stream); have an experience working internationally (corporate stream)
Be motivated to relocate and undertake country assignments (operational stream)

Every year, around 40 applicants are accepted into the Young Professionals Program.
Young Professionals are offered a 5-year term contract, spend 24 months in a structured development program, and enjoy a variety of benefits and opportunities.

2016 AVAC Advocacy Fellowship Program for Emerging Leaders

The HIV Prevention Research Advocacy Fellows Program pairs emerging leaders in advocacy and activism with existing organizations to develop and execute creative, context-specific projects focused on HIV prevention research.

Fellows projects focus primarily on advocacy around biomedical HIV prevention research (such as clinical trials of vaccines, microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis) or rollout of male circumcision for HIV prevention. Fellows projects may also focus on “test and treat” or ARV treatment as prevention strategies, which are under active discussion in many contexts.

Fellows receive training, financial support, and technical assistance to plan and implement a targeted one-year project within host organizations focused on HIV/AIDS.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Advocacy Fellows Program seeks applicants who are:

Emerging or mid- career community leaders and advocates involved or interested in advocacy around HIV prevention research and implementation. Those living with HIV are encouraged to apply
Individuals with some experience or education in the areas of HIV and AIDS, public health, medicine, international development, women’s rights, communications, or advocacy with key populations, such as sex workers, LGBT people and drug users.Based in low-and middle-income countries with high HIV burdens and where biomedical HIV prevention clinical research is planned or ongoing and/or where there is current work on implementation of new preventions strategies (such as voluntary medical male circumcision, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), early treatment (and “combination prevention” pack ages that link biomedical strategies.

Mentoring and capacity building in biomedical HIV prevention research and implementation advocacy from AVAC for both Advocacy Fellows and Host Organisations.
Connection to a global network of HIV prevention research advocates including current and former Advocacy Fellows, researchers, civil society leaders and other individuals and/or organisations working in similar fields.
Opportunities for networking and information sharing with other Advocacy Fellows and a broader community of advocates including activists, scientists, clinical trial staff and other stakeholders working in fields related to HIV prevention research and implementation.
A small stipend and technical assistance for the selected Advocacy Fellow for the initial development of a detailed work plan (up to three days over a maximum of two months).
This phase takes place before the official Fellowship year begins

2015 Forum Freelance Fund Bursary Competition for Journalists ($3,000 Canadian Grant)

The Forum Freelance Fund Bursary Competition, sponsored by Giselle Portenier, is open to freelance journalists or independent documentary-makers with projects focusing on human rights abuses. The winner will receive up to $3,000 for hazardous environment training, and the competition is open to people of any nationality, with no requirement for a Canadian connection.

Requirements

The Portenier Human Rights Bursary is open to any independent journalist or documentary filmmaker in the world, regardless of citizenship or residency.
The definition of journalists and filmmakers includes reporters, producers, directors, audio and/or video specialists and fixers.
The bursary is not open to employees or contract employees of major media companies.
There will be a maximum of one award per year, to a maximum amount of $3,000 Canadian.
The purpose of the bursary is to provide safety training for experienced or novice journalists or documentary makers working independently in the field of human rights.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate (a) a clear interest or track record in casting light on human rights abuses, especially but not exclusively human rights abuses against women and children, or (b) an upcoming assignment or project with such a human rights focus.
Applicants must also show that they have important story ideas, a clear focus and actual funding for their project or documentary.

2015 World Biennial of Student Photography Competition for Undergraduate Students Worldwide

The Student World Biennial, in the organisation of the Academy of Arts, University of Novi Sad, was first held in 2004. In the same year the First Biennial of Student Poster was organised, and ever since the Biennial of Poster has been held in odd years , and the Biennial of Photography in even years.

Eligibility Requirements:

The World Biennial of Student Photography is open to all undergraduate students of academies and colleges where the discipline of photography is part of the curriculum.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

All photographs must represent the student’s original work created within last two (2) academic years and should be verified by the professors’ signature at the back.
Format: no longer than 35cm the shorter side if submitted in electronic form, 300 dpi RGB, TIFF or JPG, or no larger than 1m2 if submitted by post.
Number of works: each student can send maximum three (3) works.
Technique: There are no limitations on techniques or realization of the photographs.
There is no entry fee.

There are two options for submitting your works:

A. BY POST

The entrants bear all postal expenses.
All works should be posted to the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad (address is at the application form).
All works should be original photos no larger than 1m²
Work should NOT be mounted in any surface, nor equipped.
On the back of the photography, in the left bottom corner, there should be a sticker clearly stating the entrant’s data written in block letters both in mother tongue and English.
Furthermore, the filled application form and the reproductions in digital format (for the purpose of printing the Biennial catalogue) must be sent to the following email addresses: [email protected].
The name of the photography file sent by e-mail must be the same as the title of the photography sent by post and they must contain the name and surname of the student.

B. BY E-MAIL

All works and filled application form should be sent to the following email addresses: [email protected].

The works sent by email must meet these condition:

file format: non-layered TIFF or JPEG
resolution: no longer than 35 cm the shorter side in 300 dpi
color: sRGB
the file size MUST NOT exceed 10 MB
The name of the photography file sent by e-mail must contain the name and surname of the student. For example if student’s name is Johann Strauss the file name should be Johann Strauss 1.tiff, Johann Strauss 2.tiff, Johann Strauss 3.tiff.

Crystal medal, € 1500, crystal medal for the tutor (professor).

2nd prize:

2015 International WaterCentre (IWC) Masters Scholarships for study in Australia

The IWC Masters Scholarships are prestigious scholarships awarded annually to high calibre candidates who clearly demonstrate potential to become future water leaders. Scholarships are available to study the IWC Master of Integrated Water Management (MIWM).

The International WaterCentre (IWC) will be offering up to three scholarships for international candidates for full-time study of the MIWM program starting in Semester 1, 2016. These include:

A – Up to two full tuition and full living costs scholarships for future water leaders from developing countries in Asia-Pacific, Africa, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle-East

Eligibility requirements

To apply for a scholarship, you must have all of the following:

A completed undergraduate degree in a related field of study from an internationally-recognised institution;
At least two years of professional experience (paid work or volunteering experience) relevant to the program;
International candidates must also demonstrate English Language Proficiency (see UQ’s Policy including minimum scores for IELTS, TOEFL or PTE). A proof of English language proficiency needs to be uploaded with the online application form.

Scholarship Details:

About The XIV World Forestry Congress

The XIV World Forestry Congress, hosted by the Republic of South Africa, will bring together the global forestry community to review and analyse the key issues and to share ways of addressing them.

The Congress – the first to be held in Africa – is inclusive of people from all countries, regions and sectors, whether they belong to a government organization, NGO, private company, scientific or professional body, a forestry society, or simply have a personal interest in attending.

All photo entries should feature both forests (or forest products) and people.

Eligibility

Entrants should be 18 or above and must have taken the photograph themselves.
The photographs should not have been taken before 1 January 2013.
Photographs should not have dates or text on top of the image.
Each participant can send up to three photographs.
All photographs should be in jpeg format.
Participants must fill out a form indicating:
Name, surname, date of birth, email, title and description of photograph, location and date when photo was taken.
Participants must also accept the legal conditions described in the form.

Format

File size: Minimum pixel width 1754 pixels at 150 ppi; maximum file size 5 MB.

Image data files should be created with digital smartphones and still cameras (including medium and large-format cameras).

Images that have been retouched using software or by other means will be accepted. Both colour and monochrome images will be accepted. (Scans of photographs taken by film cameras are not eligible.)

The standard colour space for the judging process is sRGB.

Prize:

The prize for the winner will be a trip to the Congress (travel, accommodation and registration fee), as well as a portfolio review by Stuart Franklin.
The winning photograph and 15 runners-up will also feature in a XIV World Forestry Congress calendar.

Jury:

Award-winning Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin will lead the jury. Franklin is perhaps best known for his celebrated photograph of a man defying a tank in Tiananmen Square, China, in 1989, as well as his photographic essay The Time of Trees, which examines the social relationship between nature and society.
