Eligibility Requirements

  • You may apply for the traineeship if:
  • YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO WORK IN THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA OR A VALID WORK PERMIT (nb: A COPY OF SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION, E.G. WORK PERMIT MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR APPLICATION),
  • You are a young graduate with a University diploma (at least Bachelor’s degree) in International Relations, Law, Social Studies, Politics, Economics or similar subject.
  • You have less than 1 year of professional experience.
  • You are a national of an EU Member State/s, which have signed an accession agreement or a citizen of South Africa.
  • You have no previous experience of more than 6 weeks in any of the EU institutions.
  • Excellent English, written and spoken.
  • Excellent writing and research skills.
  • You are committed and able to complete tasks within set deadlines, you are eager to learn and contribute to the activities of the EU Delegation.

Additional qualifications that would be an asset:

  • Additional degree in another field
  • If you are able to communicate efficiently in multiple languages (South Africa official languages, EU official languages).

Benefits

  • Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travels, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee.

Traineeship Details

A traineeship of up to 6 months within the Political, Press and Information Section of the EU Delegation to the Republic of South Africa, starting in June 2025.

The traineeship will be based in the Political, Press and Information Section. It will contribute to the Delegation’s work on EU – South Africa relations in the respective thematic field. The trainee will also work together with colleagues in the other Sections of the EU Delegation, as relevant and appropriate.

Main tasks:

  • Analyse the current and foreseen dynamics of EU/South Africa partnership.
  • Monitor political developments in SA and SA foreign affairs, and contribute to drafting political reports under the guidance of the staff of the section.
  • Conduct short-term and longer-term research on specific issues of interest in the fields of foreign affairs, domestic political affairs, human rights.
  • Collate information on EU legislation and politics of relevance to SA for dissemination to the wider public.
  • Attend and report on public events, seminars and conferences.
  • Administrative support to public diplomacy events, visits organized by the Delegation, and visits from Headquarters.
  • Support social media efforts of the delegation and section by proposing and drafting social media posts.
  • Support the section in coordination with EU Member States, including by preparing and reporting on meetings held with EU counsellors.
  • Support the EU Delegations alumni efforts by following up on the EU Alumni strategy and making recommendations, and management of alumni platform (updating content etc.) and database.

Applications are now open for the 2026 Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) Postgraduate Scholarships. The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship is a life-changing leadership journey. The scholarship combines financial support with a leadership programme that will challenge you, grow you, and connect you to young African changemakers – just like you.

Requirements

  • The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship is competitive. It is for young leaders who have a combination of intellect and character.
  • You must be academically strong: your marks should be above 70% or an upper second.
  • You must also have demonstrated leadership on your campus or in your community.
  • If you are between the ages of 19 and 29 at the time of applying, you are eligible. As long as you are under the age of 30 at the time you take up the scholarship, you are eligible to apply.
  • Students who are citizens of an African country, no matter where they are currently living or studying, are eligible

Courses Supported

  • The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship is for postgraduate study (Honours and Masters degrees) in any field, with the exception of MBAs, which we do not fund.

Scholarship Worth:

  • Tuition and registration fees as set by your university or institution
  • A study materials allowance as set by the MRF
  • Accommodation and meal allowances as set by the MRF
  • A medical aid allowance as set by the MRF

Application Timeline

  • March: Applications open on Monday, 17 March 2025. Candidates can add recommenders on the platform and begin uploading their documentation and working on their personal essays. See ‘requirements’.
  • April: Applications close by the end of Monday, 21 April 2025 23:59 GMT+2. No late or incomplete applications will be accepted under any circumstances.
  • June: You will be notified by the end of June whether or not you are through to Round Two.
  • July: You will be notified by the end of July whether or not you are through to Round Three.
  • August: You will be notified by the end of August if you are invited for an interview in the Final Round, or if you have been unsuccessful.
  • October: Interviews will be conducted in South Africa in October. If you are in the final round and you are based outside South Africa, you will be flown in for an in-person interview with our selection committee. Applications are now open for the 2025/2026 Nedbank: Youth Employment Service (YES) Programme. The YES (Youth Employment Service) Programme is a business-led collaboration with government to reduce unemployment by providing youth with an opportunity to develop new skills and gain meaningful workplace experience, which in turn will significantly improve their chances of finding long-term future employment.

Requirements

  • South African youth who:
  • are between 18 and 29 years old;
  • have a matric qualification;
  • are currently unemployed;
  • are South African-born African, Coloured or Indian citizens in line with the BBBEE Act definition of ‘black people’; and
  • have not participated in a YES Programme with another organisation before.

Program Details

  • Nedbank YES youth will be employed for 12 months to gain quality work experience.
  • The YES Programme is not a learnership, internship or apprenticeship programme.
  • The programme is earmarked to start on 1 June 2025.

Benefits

  • Nedbank YES youth will receive a monthly stipend guided by the YES Programme.
  • A stipend is monetary support to help an individual pay for living, food and travel-related expenses.

Applications are now open for the 2026 South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Graduate Development Programme. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is inviting productive and talented postgraduates to join its one-year Graduate Development Programme in February 2026.    

The SARB serves the economic well-being of South Africans through maintaining price and financial stability. It is responsible for the regulation of the South African financial sector, the design and distribution of banknotes and coin, the management of interest rates, setting the cash reserve requirement for banks, and ensuring the stability of both the banking sector and the wider financial system.

Program Details

Exposure to departments in the SARB

Graduates will work and learn at the SARB Head Office from February 2026 to January 2027. They will be assigned to a department and exposed to various tasks and projects.

During the Programme, graduates will attend various learning interventions at the SARB Academy. Interventions are mainly specific to central banking and are aimed at producing well-rounded central bankers. As part of the holistic programme, graduates will also gain personal and professional skills such as assertive communication, public speaking and presentations, creating powerful PowerPoint presentations, impactful reporting, teamwork and personal excellence and etiquette.

After the first year

At the end of the year, some graduates will be permanently appointed into a department of the SARB. Those most likely to be appointed are graduates who:

•    are interested in continuing their career at the SARB;
•    have a desire to contribute to monetary policy, financial stability, currency management, supervising financial institutions, financial markets, or any one of the SARB’s enabling functions;
•    have demonstrated behaviours aligned to the SARB’s values of accountability, excellence, integrity, respect and trust and open communication;
•    can function independently and contribute actively and effectively in a team; and
•    have performed exceptionally well in their assigned departments and academically.

Program Details

Graduates will be placed in the Business Systems and Technology Department within the SARB, from February 2026 to January 2027. During the programme, graduates will attend various learning interventions at the SARB Academy, including technical training. The programme offers opportunities for a Data Science track, and graduates will work in a Data Lab environment from time to time, on various use cases.

Duration of the programme: One year

Requirements

To be considered, candidates must have a postgraduate qualification or be in the process of completing a postgraduate qualification (ideally completed the course work) in one of the following fields:

Arts & Culture Trust Nyoloha Scholarship Programme 2025 for Young South Africans

Applications are now open for the 2025 Arts & Culture Trust Nyoloha Scholarship Programme. The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) is calling on passionate, talented, and dedicated young South African artists with a specific interest in studying arts at a tertiary or accredited arts institution in South Africa* to apply for a coveted spot on the ACT Nyoloha Scholarship Programme (NSP) for 2025. If you are between the ages of 17 and 25, are eager to pursue a career in the arts, and are ready to take your talents to the next level, this could be the life-changing opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

The ACT NSP is a partnership between the ACT and the Nedbank Arts Affinity, supported by Nedbank, and MTN Foundation South Africa. The programme was relaunched in 2022 after a 2-year break during the Covid-19 pandemic. This joint initiative creates an opportunity for young performing or visual/digital artists to receive professional arts training and potential scholarship funding ftowards higher education, which is limited to covering registration fees, tuition fees, and books or related study materials.

Requirements

  • The undergraduate scholarship programme is aimed at youth aged 17 to 25, who are either currently in matric or already have matric with university undergraduate or college admission, and who are not already studying arts and are not professionals. The goal of this scholarship is to help these youth earn their first qualification in the performing, visual or digital arts at a South African tertiary institution or an ACT approved accredited institution.

The dynamic training component of the programme, which roll out bi-weekly on Saturdays, is designed to empower the selected participants by combining practical exercises, mentorship and collaboration. Participants will develop their technical skills, creative expression, and professional readiness for the creative and cultural industries. 

Eligibility

Individuals who are:

  1. Between the ages of 17 – 25 years old.
  2. Currently in Grade 12 OR have university exemption.
  3. Need financial assistance to pursue a qualification in performing or visual arts as a South African tertiary/accredited institution, for studies commencing in 2026.
  4. Not currently registered at a tertiary institution/accredited institution for the 2025 academic year.
  5. Do not have an existing tertiary qualification in an arts/creative discipline from a South African tertiary/accredited institution.
  6. Not considered a professional artist – (have specialized training/and or employed full time in their artistic discipline).
  7. Not a 2024 ACT Nyoloha Scholarship Programme participant or finalist.
  8. Willing and able to commit to the 6-month duration of the programme.
  9. A South African citizen. 

Who may not participate

  • Professional artists or performers.
  • Those who already have an arts qualification.
  • Those who are already registered with a tertiary institution or have already been accepted to register at a tertiary institution in 2025.
  • Those who may have participated In the ACT NSP over the past 3 years.

Benefits

  • One successful applicant in each category, that is performing arts and visual or digital arts, will receive a scholarship to start their studies in the 2026 academic year.
  • ACT will cover all expenses for finalists’ travel, accommodation and meals for the below-mentioned week in preparation for the gala performance and exhibition.

Application process

  • Category 1: Visual and digital arts – Candidates must submit portfolios in line with the application guidelines document.
  • Category 2: Performing arts – Candidates must submit a 2-minute video in which they perform in their selected discipline (singing, acting or dance).
  • ACT will be accepting a total intake of 80 participants for this year’s scholarship programme.
  • The submitted portfolio (visual/digital arts) OR video (performing arts) will be used to shortlist applicants for participation In the ACT Nyoloha Scholarship Programme 2025.
  • Parental or guardian consent is required for applicants below 17 years old when applying for a spot on the 2025 scholarship programme.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the end of May 2025.
  • The programme comprises bi-weekly online training and mentorship with industry heavyweights.
  • Participants must engage and participate in tasks that will be evaluated monthly using a rating system.
  • The top 15 candidates across all disciplines will be the finalists and will compete in a gala performance showcase and/or visual and digital arts exhibition on 2 October 2025 and 4 October respectively.
  • The finalists will be brought to Johannesburg, from 28 September 2025 until 5 October 2025and hosted for a full week of enrichment activities and preparation for the gala performance showcase and/or visual and digital arts exhibition.
  • The winners in each of the 2 categories will be revealed at the gala performance on 4 October 2025.

ARSO is an intergovernmental body, established by the African Union and UNECA in 1977 with a principal mandate to harmonize African Standards and conformity assessment procedures in order to reduce Technical Barriers to Trade and therefore promote intra African and International trade as well as enhance industrialization of Africa. Part of the ARSO mandate is to ensure the well-being and safety of the African community. As an African organization, ARSO’s vision and mission are aligned with any efforts made to eradicate poverty, educate the youth, and foster a culture among the youth.

2025 Theme

Role of Education about Standardisation (EaS) in shaping Education and African Students for the sustainable Development opportunities and challenges in the 21st Century.

To participate in the competition, students must submit their essays to the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
The SABS will assess and award the top 5 national winners.The top five winning essays will be forwarded to ARSO as entries in the continental competition. All essays must be well-written, demonstrate creativity and innovation, as well as understanding of the theme for assessment – as guided in the subsequent continental concept note. In addition to the continental requirement, the SABS further requires that essays must be properly formatted (structured and justified) and properly referenced.

Entry Requirements

  • This competition is open to all South African students currently registered at any tertiary institutions in South Africa, as recognized by the National Department of Education and Council of Higher Education.
  • Interested foreign students at South African tertiary institutions are encouraged to submit their essays to the countries of their origin.
  • Participants must be 35 years old or younger. Information and rules of participation in the competition are included in the concept note.
  • Essays should be between 1000 and 1200 words. The essays should be double spaced and presented in Century Gothic, size 12.
  • Essays must be written in English.

Applications are now open for the 2026/2027 Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program. The Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program (HSAFP) was established in 1979 by Harvard President Derek Bok to address the needs of South Africans denied access to advanced education under Apartheid. The program was a direct response to the strong movement by Harvard students and faculty during the transnational divestment campaigns of the 1970s. The Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program (HSAFP) continues to serve as a powerful bridge-builder and intellectual opportunity for talented South Africans, with the goal of providing a “transformational experience” at Harvard University during recipients’ fellowship year and beyond. 

Fellowships are up to one year of study at select Harvard schools, including Harvard Law School, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Harvard Business School executive education programs (i) Program for Leadership Development (PLD), ii) General Management Program (GMP), iii) Advanced Management Program (AMP)).  The recruitment and selection process for the HSAFP take place annually, with interviews facilitated by the Africa Office in Johannesburg. 

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Applicants must hold a bachelors degree or four-year equivalent. 
  • Applicants must be able to conduct spoken and written academic work of the highest standard in Harvard’s language of instruction (English). 
  • Applicants must be South African citizens (or legal permanent residents of South Africa); priority will be given to those currently working in Africa.  
  • Applicants must have at least five years of postgraduate work experience; priority will be given to those with a demonstrated commitment to the public good.

Fellowship Terms

  • The fellowship provides for payment of all tuition for the full period of enrollment at Harvard.
  • The fellowship also funds round-trip airfare between the fellow’s city of residence and Boston.
  • A monthly stipend is provided to fellows, with the exception of those enrolled in the Executive Education Programs, to cover the cost of housing and other living expenses. Housing is usually in university graduate dormitories. Please note that housing costs in the Boston/Cambridge area are extremely high, and the stipend only covers bare necessities.
  •  The monthly stipend must also be used to pay other expenses such as medical and dental insurance, medicine, taxes, food, winter clothing, books, and supplies.
  • Fellows are held personally responsible for the payment of all bills other than tuition fees and airfare.
  • Fellows should also be aware that their stipends will have a significant amount of taxes taken out before they receive the funds.

Applications are now open for the 2025 German Development Institute Managing Global Governance (MGG) Academy. The MGG Academy is a training and dialogue format for highly qualified early- to mid-career professionals from global powers and the European Union (EU). It brings together experts from governmental institutions, think tanks and research institutions, civil society organisations and the private sector in Brazil, China, the EU, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa.

The programme targets (future) change makers who are dedicated to global cooperation and a transformation to sustainability and who are ready to develop their leadership skills through deep self-reflection and experience-based learning. Learning from diverse perspectives, developing transformation and cooperation competences, and building a trustful network to co-create solutions are the core assets of the MGG Academy.

The MGG Academy 2025 takes place between September 04 and November 23 at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) in Bonn, Germany.

Prospective participants should:

  • Be a national or permanent resident of one of the participating countries (Brazil, China, EU, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa)
  • Work on key issues of global governance and/or sustainable development
  • Have a university degree (minimum Bachelor)
  • Have 3 years to maximum 15 years of professional experience in a field relevant to global cooperation and/or sustainable development
  • Have a good command of the English language, with the ability to actively participate in group discussions, engage with the modules by reflecting and sharing perspectives on the topics covered
  • Have the support of their employer (written support required as part of the application)
  • Be ready to participate in an intensive, full-time programme (8 hours per day, 40 weekly working hours)
  • Be sensitive to other cultures, open to teamwork, and adaptable to a broad variety of working methods
  • Be willing to reflect on shared and individual experiences, attitudes and competences

Employers are requested to:

  • Grant their employees a special leave of absence for the training period and relieve them of job-related tasks for the duration of the MGG Academy
  • Cover the costs of the round trip to and from Germany
  • Come to an agreement ensuring the living standards of the employee’s relatives in their home country
  • Support their employees in transferring the newly acquired competencies to their job

The participation in the MGG Academy is free of cost and entails various support elements to ensure an adequate standard of living in Germany.

  1. Entrepreneur must be a South African between the ages 18-35 years

Requirements

Academic staff are encouraged to apply for this opportunity. In terms of the summarised criteria, a candidate should:

  • hold a doctorate
  • have demonstrable evidence of some academic achievement (signalling advancement towards the senior ranks of the academy in their scholarly work), and

The Department of Science and Innovation-National Youth Service (DSTI-NYS) programme is a component of the government’s overall National Youth Service Programme (NYS). Job Purpose

The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (NRF-SAASTA), a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF) on behalf of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) has the following opportunities;

1. Unemployed science, engineering and technology graduates (18 to 35 years of age), to volunteer their services towards the implementation of the DSI-National Youth Service (NYS) programme  for a period of 12 months. Successful applicants will be deployed to the participating organisations that collaborate with the DSI on the implementation of the Science Engagement Strategy.

This postgraduate bursary is designed for students who are pursuing their first postgraduate qualification. In addition to financial support, FREF offers holistic wraparound services that ensure our bursary recipients not only succeed academically but also develop personally and professionally. Chinese Government Scholarships 2025/2026 for South Africans to study in China (Fully Funded)

Applications are now open for the 2025/2026 Chinese Government Scholarships. The Chinese Government is offering scholarships for South African students to study at Chinese institutions starting in the 2025/26 academic year. The Department of Higher Education and Training (the Department) is responsible for nominations for the Chinese Government scholarship programme.

Eligibility

  • South African citizens in good health (medical check will be required for successful applicants);
  • Strong academic record with a minimum 60% average in previous studies;
  • Availability to study in China from September 2025;
  • Demonstrated interest in China and commitment to the development of South Africa;
  • Applicants must meet the minimum academic requirements for entry into the programme of choice.
  • Bachelor’s applicants must have HSK 3 level language certificate and be willing to study in Chinese, applications without a HSK level 3 language certificate will be automatically disqualified.
  • Master’s and doctoral applicants must have HSK 4 level language certificate and be willing to study in Chinese, applications without a HSK level 4 language certificate will be automatically disqualified.

Important: The scholarship does not support any medical degrees and preference will be given to applications for postgraduate studies.

Benefits

The Department of Higher Education and Training provides the following (subject to the availability of funds):

  • One return economy airfare;
  • Monthly top-up stipend;
  • Once-off settlement allowance;
  • Research funding (postgraduate only)
  • Visa costs;
  • Compulsory orientation programme before departure.

Successful scholarship applicants will be required to sign a contract and return to South Africa upon completion of studies.

Applications are now open for the 2025 Standard Bank Basali Development Programme. Since November 2021, Standard Bank in partnership with Giving Wings launched the Basali Development Programme. The name Basali (pronounced Basadi) is derived from Southern Sotho which means ‘women’. Each year we travel a journey of business development with female entrepreneurs, through practical online workshops and masterclasses led by subject experts to equip entrepreneurs with valuable knowledge and skills that will enable them to build thriving and resilient businesses.

Requirements


Application Criteria:

  1. 51% or more black women-owned businesses (black as defined by the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act).
  2. Be a full-time entrepreneur.
  3. The business must be registered with CIPC.
  4. The beneficiary must be a South African citizen trading in South Africa.
  5. Total annual revenue of less than R10 million.
  6. Business is commercially viable operations with foreseeable growth.
  7. Not an Alumni of the Basali Development Programme.
  8. Not a Standard Bank employee.

University of Pretoria’s Future Africa Institute 2025 Early Career Research Leadership Fellowship (ECRLF)- Funded

Applications are now open for the 2025 University of Pretoria’s Future Africa Institute Early Career Research Fellowship. The Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LeaF II) is a two-year research-oriented fellowship programme supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and hosted at Future Africa. The programme focuses on future-looking science leadership and developing the next generation of African scientists and academics.

The programme seeks to build a network of emerging African scientists with the skills to apply transformative research methods and approaches in addressing complex sustainability challenges in Africa, including inter- and transdisciplinarity, systems thinking, and futures literacy. Furthermore, it will provide multiple research and learning opportunities covering different sectors of science and society, aiming to create sustainable solutions in a real-world context, establishing communities of practice, and addressing the broad scope of the politics of sustainability, resilience, and greater social cohesion.

The Fellowship will support early-career researchers in conducting research projects relevant to the focus areas of the politics of sustainability, resilience, and social cohesion.  The research will be conducted in the context of relevant national and regional challenges in sustainable development.

Eligibility Requirements

 Applicants must have:

  • A PhD degree awarded within the last 10 years
  • A Faculty or a continuing research position at a research-active institution in Africa
  • Active involvement in research at an African institution of higher education or research
  • A strong record of excellent scientific or scholarly achievement
  • Interest in translating and communicating the results of their work for impact on society
  • Interest in developing leadership ability in research and beyond.
  • An interest in the role of transdisciplinary research in addressing issues related to the focus areas of the programme, namely, (sustainability and the politics of sustainability, resilience and social cohesion).
  • An interest in collaborations across disciplines and sectors (e.g., industry, civil society, government) and with diverse stakeholders.
  • A commitment to participate in all the activities of the fellowship.
  • The intent to share what is learned in the programme with their broader networks.
  • Age below 45 for men, or 50 for women.

Selection Criteria

  • The programme is intended for candidates from across the African continent. The research will be conducted in the fellow’s home country, and fellows will retain their position at their home institutions.
  • Fellows should be employed by an African higher education or research institution or have a commitment from a home institution to support or consider a future position. The programme will be flexible to allow for minimal disruption of the academic responsibilities at the fellows’ home institutions.

Application requirements

  1. Applications must be submitted using the online application form. The application form will be live from 11-30 November 2024: http://callforapplications.co.za/ 
  2. The application will include a research proposal as outlined in the template included in the online application form.
  3. All applicants must provide two support letters from academic referees. One letter should be from the applicant’s line manager or current supervisor and should include confirmation that the applicant will be released from responsibilities – where applicable – to allow them to fulfil the requirements of the fellowship.
  4. All applicants must have a supervisor in their home institution who is prepared to work with the applicant in developing the application jointly, between fellow and supervisor, with a research proposal, budget and publication plan.
  5. The supervisor will be a co-applicant with the fellow in the application and the proposal for the research project. The supervisor is requested to complete the relevant section on the Online Application Form.
