What: Master in Tropical Medicine and Global Health Residential Tutorship 2015
Where: PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORY IVO DE CARNERI, PEMBA
When : 16 November – 4 December 2015.
From 16th November to 4th December 2015 the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri in Pemba (Zanzibar, Tanzania) will host the training course in “Tropical Medicine and Global Health”, organized by Ivo de Carneri Foundation in partnership with University of Florence, University Hospital Meyer and Carlo Urbani Association.
The event is also part of the tutorship of the Italian Master in Tropical Medicine and Global health The course is addressed to health professionals (10 from Sub-Saharan Africa and 10 from Italy and other European countries). Scholarships are available for African students and for selected
The course venue is the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri (PHL-IdC) in Pemba Island (Zanzibar,Tanzania), an advanced Scientific Institution equipped with modern equipment and training facilities.
This training stage is unique in the panorama of tropical diseases and international public health tra
ining. It is designed as a practical tool to provide health staff scientific knowledge and skills to tackle the great challenges which are affecting billion of people, e specially in developing countries.
Course goal
The overall goal is to have an overlook of public health challenges, to understand the role of Public
Health Laboratory, and to have a first hand experience in health care in a low-resource country from Sub-Saharan Africa.
Participants
  • Twenty (20) participants are allowed to participate in the training. Ten (10) applications are reserved for participants from Italy and industrialised countries and other 10 posts are reserved for African applicants.
  • For the 10 participants from industrialised countries, priority is given to trainees of the Italian Master in Tropical Medicine and Global Health.
Qualifications
required for admission Degree in Medicine, Biology, Pharmacy, Nursing, Diploma/Certificate in health-related subjects.
Good knowledge of written and spoken English, with excellent level of listening and comprehension
Cost: Euro 1.500
Cost of course includes: Tuition Fee, Full Board Accommodation, Transfer by charter flight from Zanzibar to Pemba, one day trip to Vumawimbi Beach through Ngezi Forest.
Cost of course not includes: international flight from the participant’s country of origin, Visa, airport taxes, insurance, personal expenses. A caution deposit of Euro 250 must be anticipated by the selected participants beneficiaries of full scholarship within 30th September 2015.
Full payment by the other participants is due before 30th September 2015
Scholarships:
  • The trainees of the Master of Tropical Medicine and Global Health will benefit from a partial scholarship and the tuition fee will be 500 Euros only. Two full board scholarships will be offered from AICU to two winners of the Carlo Urbani’s Award (only for candidates from Marche Health Institutions, for details see www.aicu.it).
  • In addition, based on availability of sponsors,10 full scholarships will be offered to African applicants for coverage of all course’s expenses, except the international flight from the participant’s country of origin to Zanzibar, Visa, airport taxes,insurance, and personal expenses.
  • In order to avoid late cancellation, a caution deposit of 250 Euros must be anticipated by candidates selected for full scholarships within 30th September 2015.
  • The caution will be retained in case of cancellation after that date, or it will be refunded to the candidates with full scholarship at their arrival in Pemba.

2015 African Fact-Checking Awards for Journalistic Excellence in Africa (€4,000 Euros Cash Prize)

Are you a reporter for an Africa-based media organisation? Has a report you published or broadcast exposed a claim from a public figure or institution to be misleading or wrong?

The African Fact-Checking Awards are in their second year — the only awards that honour journalism by media based in Africa that exposes misleading claims made by public figures and institutions.

The winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony to be held in Africa in November.

The awards are operated in partnership with the African Media Initiative, the largest media industry body on the continent. Funding for the prizes has come from the AFP Foundation, the Shuttleworth Foundation and Africa Check.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • To be eligible, the entries must be original pieces of fact-checking journalism first published or broadcast between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, by a media house based in Africa.
  • The work may be published in print or online, broadcast on the radio or television or published in a blog.
  • The work may have been published or broadcast in any language but, to be eligible for the competition, an accurate translation into either French or English must be made available to the judges.
  • Current staff of the AFP news agency or Africa Check are not eligible for the competition.

Prize:

  • A winner and two runners-up will be selected, and announced at an event in Africa in November.
  • The winner will receive a cash prize of €2000 and the two runners-up a prize of €1000 each.

Selection Criteria

A six-member jury of eminent journalists from Europe and Africa will be formed in June.

All entries sent into the competition before midnight on 31 August 2015 will be sifted to produce a short-list to go to the judges. The entries for the competition will all be judged on the following four criteria.

  • The significance for wider society of the claim investigated
  • How the claim was tested against the available evidence
  • How well the piece presented the evidence for and against the claim
  • The impact that the publication had on public debate on the topic

Do you want to get involved in the discussion on the next universal agreement on climate change?

From 26 to 28 November, only a few days before the COP21, 5000 young people from all around the world will gather for the 11th Conference of Youth. Not only this event will be one of the biggest gatherings of youth in France, but it will also lead to an unprecedented mobilization in the field of international climate negotiations.

The Conference Of Youth is the gathering of young people occurring every year before the conference of Heads of State on climate (Conference of Parties/COP), organized for the first time in France. This year, the COP21 has a major goal: to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate change.

During 3 days, almost 5000 young people are expected for an unprecedented mobilization, to build a real momentum, and strengthen the visibility of actions and the expertise of young people in favor of a more sustainable and desirable lifestyle.

Eligibility

  •  The call for projects is open to all, whether you are an organisation, a charity, a social enterprise, an educational institute, an individual, as long as you recognise yourself in the message conveyed by the 11th COY.
  •  Priority is given to projects led by young people or driven by an inter-generational purpose.
  •  Each project must possess human and material resources specific to its realization (except for basic furniture).
  •  A list of the required furniture (tables, chairs, projector, etc.) should be sent to the organizers within the same time limit as the applications, otherwise the availability of this equipment will not be guaranteed.
  • Finally, profit-making activities for commercial gain will not be accepted.

The organization of the COY11 is coordinate by several youth associations with strong environmental engagement: Avenir Climatique, CliMates, Fédération du Scoutisme Français, REFEDD, the movement WARN! and YOUNGO.

2015 Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarships for African Writers (£45,000 Prize)

Applications are now open for the 2015 Miles Morland Foundation Scholarship for African Writers.

It can be difficult for writers, before they become established, to write and to earn a living outside writing at the same time.

To help fill this need the MMF aims to each year award three Morland Writing Scholarships for fiction and one Morland Scholarship for non-fiction.

Eligibility

  • The Scholarships are open to anyone writing in the English language who was born in Africa or both of whose parents were born in Africa.

Benefits

Grant

  • Scholars writing fiction will receive a grant of £18,000, paid over the course of twelve months. Scholars writing non-fiction will receive a grant of £27,000, paid over the course of eighteen months.

Mentoring:

  • Each of the winners will be offered the opportunity to be mentored by an established author or publisher who will give help when sought on the progress of their book and comments as to how it succeeds in meeting its objectives.
  • Participation in this scheme will be voluntary. It is not the intention of the MMF to act as editor or a publisher.
  • Scholars will need to find their own agents and publishers although it is to be hoped that over the years the award of a Morland Scholarship will come to be recognised as an incubator of talent.

Qualifications

  • To qualify for the Scholarship a candidate must submit a piece of published work, or an excerpt from a piece of published work (written in English), of between two and five thousand words to be evaluated by a panel of readers and judges set up by the MMF.
  • The Scholarships will be awarded based on these submissions although the Foundation may also wish to question certain candidates or ask for other work.
  •  The work submitted will be judged purely on literary merit. It is not the purpose of the Scholarships to support academic or scientific research, or works of special interest such as religious or political writings.
  • Submissions or proposals of this nature do not qualify.

Scholarship Requirement

  • The only condition imposed on the Scholars during the year of their Scholarship is that they must write.
  • They will be asked to submit by e-mail at least 10,000 new words every month until they have finished their book.
  • The Scholarship will terminate if a Scholar fails to submit the required work on time unless prior authorisation has been received.
  • The Scholarship is intended for writers who want to write a full-length book of 80,000 words or more.
  • If the first draft of the book is completed before the year is up, payments will continue while the Scholar edits and refines their work. 

Proposed Work

  • The candidates should submit a brief description of the work they intend to write (200 – 500 words). It should be a new work, not a work in progress. The proposed work must be in English, as must all submissions.

Important Dates:

  • The Scholarships will be announced in December 2015 and will run for the whole of calendar 2016. The Trustees reserve the right to vary the terms and requirements of the Scholarships at their discretion.

Call for Nomination: Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) Representatives 2015 Elections.

Do you want to be part of a team representing the voice of young people in the Commonwealth?

Nominations are now open for the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) 2015 Elections for its executive team, and will close on 16 July 2015.

The Commonwealth Youth Council is one of the largest and most diverse democratically elected youth-led organisations in the world, representing young people from across the Commonwealth in Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean, the Americas, Africa and Europe. It’s the legitimate and official voice for young people from 53 Commonwealth countries.

To fit the general criteria for nomination, candidates:

  • must be at least 15 years old at nomination, and be under 30 years for the entire term of office (November 2015-November 2017)
  • must have a minimum of three years’ experience as a national and regional/international youth leader
  • should be an experienced youth advocate
  • must be national of a Commonwealth country, but do not need to be resident in that country.

  • Vice Chairperson – Partnerships and Resources
  • Vice Chairperson – Policy and Advocacy

The elections are transparent and democratic. After nomination and reference checks, approved candidates will begin campaigning from August 2015, leading up to the elections.

Young people will have the opportunity to choose their leadership team on Election Day, 24 November 2015 during the Commonwealth Youth Council’s General Assembly in Malta.

The Election

The elections will coincide with the Commonwealth Youth Forum and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2015. This year’s Youth Forum delegates are shaping national and Commonwealth agendas on topics of particular interest to young people under the theme ‘Adding Global Value…#WhatNext?’

2015 Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Research Fellowship Program for study in Japan (Fully Funded)

Upon the concept of the founder of the Matsumae International Foundation (MIF), “Towards A Greater Understanding of Japan and a Lasting World Peace”, MIF has started the Research Fellowship Program in 1980.

Currently, MIF is receiving application for Research Fellowship Program until the 31st of August 2015.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet all of the following eligibility requirements are invited to submit the required application documents.
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (Doctorate) degree, or be recognized by MIF as possessing equivalent academic qualifications.
  • Applicants must be under 49 years old at the time of application.
  • Applicants must have sufficient conversational ability in English or Japanese to prevent insurmountable difficulties during their research activities in Japan.
  • Applicants should not have been in Japan in the past and/or in the present.
  • Applicants should have firm positions and professions in their home countries, and should return to their countries on completion of their fellowship stay by MIF.
  • Applicants must be of sound health and not physically handicapped in any way which would not prevent from carrying out research in Japan

Period & Number of Fellowships:

  • For a period of from three to six months; the number of fellowships is about 20 persons each year.
  • Applicants indicate the period of Fellowship with the length of stay needed for the Research Project  between 3 months to 6 months, and the commencing month and ending month between April 2016
    to March 2017. (e.g. 5 months from June 2016 to October 2017)

Host Institution In Japan:

  • Applicants are free to select host institutions (university research laboratories, national research institutions or the corresponding facilities of private industry)

Fellowship Details:

  • Stipend for research and stay, Insurance, Air transportation (a round-trip air ticket to/from Tokyo) and Lump sum on arrival

2015 UN-Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award for Entrepreneurs ($USD200,000 Cash Grant)

The UN-Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award has been established as a result of a partnership between UN-Habitat, the International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO) together with CDB Orient that aims to reward young inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs.
Young inventors and entrepreneurs are important catalysts for promoting sustainable cities and developing highly skilled talents needed for future urban development. The Award stems from an agreement signed between UN-Habitat and IESCO in April 2013 during the twenty fourth session of the UN-Habitat Governing Council, to launch the “Urban Youth Empowerment and Ecological Safety project”.
The project aims to address issues of youth unemployment, poverty, and ecological safety through the development of models and policies that will lead to the meaningful engagement of young people in the development of a number of cities in Africa and Asia.
UN-Habitat Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award is designed to recognize and celebrate young men and women throughout the world who have developed innovative programmes, practices, activities and solutions to the social, economic, political and environmental challenges facing human kind today.
Eligibility Requirements
  • The Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award is open to all Young women and men between 15 and 32 years from developing countries and run a youth led for – profit and or nonprofit organization, or a business or entity that aims to improve youth livelihoods and better serve their communities with accomplishment in any of the above Award Categories
  • Youth from other countries will also qualify to get recognition by way of citations.
  • Institutions and individuals that promote and catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship will also be recognized and cited

Award:

The winners are awarded a monetary prize: The total amount of the prize pool is USD 200,000 distributed among five categories. The Award will consist of
  • A cash grant of $ 20,000 for the winner (Up to 2 winners for each category)
  • The prize also consists of a trophy and;
  • A certificate jointly issued by UN-Habitat and IESCO and CDB Orient

The theme of the conference is Ending Impunity: People. Integrity. Action. 

Registration is now open for for the 16th edition of the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) taking place in Putrajaya, Malaysia, from the 2nd-4th September 2015.

The Conference will be jointly hosted with the Government of Malaysia, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and the Malaysian Society for Transparency and Integrity (TI Malaysia).

The International Anti-Corruption Conference is the world’s premier global forum for bringing together heads of state, civil society, the private sector and more to tackle the increasingly sophisticated challenges posed by corruption. The IACC takes place every two years in a different region of the world, and hosts from 800 to 2000 participants from over 135 countries worldwide.

The conference serves as the premier global forum for the networking and cross-fertilisation that are indispensable for effective advocacy and action, on a global and national level.

Join 800 participants from around the world for plenary debates and workshops to discuss what can done to end impunity for corruption.

The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is an international exchange program that offers practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world the opportunity to spend five months at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington DC, in order to undertake independent research on democratic challenges worldwide.

While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; conduct research and writing; consider best practices and lessons learned; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The fellowship is intended primarily for individuals from developing and aspiring democracies.
  • Practitioners and journalists should have substantial work experience in their fields, while scholars are expected to have a Ph.D., or academic equivalent, at the time of application.
  • The program does not support professional training, fieldwork, or students working toward a degree, nor does it provide funding to implement projects in the field.
  • A working knowledge of English is required for participation in the program.

Benefits:

  • The program offers research support and facilitates fellows’ outreach to Washington’s advocacy, media, academic, and policy communities.
  • All fellowships include a monthly payment, health insurance, and roundtrip travel reimbursement. The program does not provide financial assistance for accompanying family or other dependents.

Program Details:

  • The program runs two five-month fellowship sessions per year, during which fellows are expected to work full time on their projects.
  • Practitioners focus on strategies and best practices for strengthening democracy in their country of interest; scholars conduct original research for publication.
  • Projects may address the economic, political, social, legal, or cultural aspects of democratic development and include a range of methodologies and approaches.
  • The program hosts an active calendar of events, including an introduction to NED and its partner institutions.
  • Fellows are expected to present their work and prepare a written product during their stay.

The Young Professionals Program (YPP) is a starting point for an exciting career in the World Bank.

It is a unique opportunity for younger talent who have both a passion for international development–be it for working in Operations or in some Corporate areas–and the leadership potential to grow in fascinating top technical and managerial roles in the World Bank Group.

The Program is designed for highly qualified and motivated individuals skilled in areas relevant to the WBG technical/operations such as economics, finance, education, public health, social sciences, engineering, urban planning, agriculture, natural resources and others; as well as to WBG corporate areas such as communications, information technology, human resources and corporate finance.

To be competitive for this highly selective program, candidates need to demonstrate a commitment to development, proven academic success, professional achievement, and leadership capability.

Minimum Requirements

The following are the minimum requirements to be eligible for the Young Professionals Program.

  • Citizenship of a member country of the World Bank
  • 32 years of age or younger (i.e. born on or after October 1, 1983)
  • A PhD or Master’s degree and relevant work experience
  • Fluency in English
  • Full proficiency in one or more of the WBG’s working languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish is desired but not required
  • Specialization in a field relevant to the WBG Technical/Operations such as economics, finance, education, public health, social sciences, engineering, urban planning, agriculture, natural resources and others; and other WBG corporate areas such as communications, information technology, human resources and corporate finance.
  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience related to development or continued academic study at the doctoral level

2016 AVAC Advocacy Fellowship Program for Emerging Leaders

The HIV Prevention Research Advocacy Fellows Program pairs emerging leaders in advocacy and activism with existing organizations to develop and execute creative, context-specific projects focused on HIV prevention research.

Fellows projects focus primarily on advocacy around biomedical HIV prevention research (such as clinical trials of vaccines, microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis) or rollout of male circumcision for HIV prevention. Fellows projects may also focus on “test and treat” or ARV treatment as prevention strategies, which are under active discussion in many contexts.

Fellows receive training, financial support, and technical assistance to plan and implement a targeted one-year project within host organizations focused on HIV/AIDS.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Advocacy Fellows Program seeks applicants who are:
  • Emerging or mid- career community leaders and advocates involved or interested in advocacy around HIV prevention research and implementation. Those living with HIV are encouraged to apply
  • Individuals with some experience or education in the areas of HIV and AIDS, public health, medicine, international development, women’s rights, communications, or advocacy with key populations, such as sex workers, LGBT people and drug users.Based in low-and middle-income countries with high HIV burdens and where biomedical HIV prevention clinical research is planned or ongoing and/or where there is current work on implementation of new preventions strategies (such as voluntary medical male circumcision, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), early treatment (and “combination prevention” pack ages that link biomedical strategies.

  • Mentoring and capacity building in biomedical HIV prevention research and implementation advocacy from AVAC for both Advocacy Fellows and Host Organisations.
  • Connection to a global network of HIV prevention research advocates including current and former Advocacy Fellows, researchers, civil society leaders and other individuals and/or organisations working in similar fields.
  • Opportunities for networking and information sharing with other Advocacy Fellows and a broader community of advocates including activists, scientists, clinical trial staff and other stakeholders working in fields related to HIV prevention research and implementation.
  • A small stipend and technical assistance for the selected Advocacy Fellow for the initial development of a detailed work plan (up to three days over a maximum of two months).

2015 Forum Freelance Fund Bursary Competition for Journalists ($3,000 Canadian Grant)

The Forum Freelance Fund Bursary Competition, sponsored by Giselle Portenier, is open to freelance journalists or independent documentary-makers with projects focusing on human rights abuses. The winner will receive up to $3,000 for hazardous environment training, and the competition is open to people of any nationality, with no requirement for a Canadian connection.

Requirements

  • The Portenier Human Rights Bursary is open to any independent journalist or documentary filmmaker in the world, regardless of citizenship or residency.
  •  The definition of journalists and filmmakers includes reporters, producers, directors, audio and/or video specialists and fixers.
  • The bursary is not open to employees or contract employees of major media companies.
  • There will be a maximum of one award per year, to a maximum amount of $3,000 Canadian.
  • The purpose of the bursary is to provide safety training for experienced or novice journalists or documentary makers working independently in the field of human rights. 
  • Applicants should be able to demonstrate (a) a clear interest or track record in casting light on human rights abuses, especially but not exclusively human rights abuses against women and children, or (b) an upcoming assignment or project with such a human rights focus.
  • Applicants must also show that they have important story ideas, a clear focus and actual funding for their project or documentary.

2015 World Biennial of Student Photography Competition for Undergraduate Students Worldwide

The Student World Biennial, in the organisation of the Academy of Arts, University of Novi Sad, was first held in 2004. In the same year the First Biennial of Student Poster was organised, and ever since the Biennial of Poster has been held in odd years , and the Biennial of Photography in even years.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The World Biennial of Student Photography is open to all undergraduate students of academies and colleges where the discipline of photography is part of the curriculum.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

  1. All photographs must represent the student’s original work created within last two (2) academic years and should be verified by the professors’ signature at the back.
  2. Format: no longer than 35cm the shorter side if submitted in electronic form, 300 dpi RGB, TIFF or JPG, or no larger than 1m2 if submitted by post.
  3. Number of works: each student can send maximum three (3) works.
  4. Technique: There are no limitations on techniques or realization of the photographs.
  5. There is no entry fee.

There are two options for submitting your works:

A. BY POST

  • The entrants bear all postal expenses.
  • All works should be posted to the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad (address is at the application form).
  • All works should be original photos no larger than 1m²
  • Work should NOT be mounted in any surface, nor equipped.
  • On the back of the photography, in the left bottom corner, there should be a sticker clearly stating the entrant’s data written in block letters both in mother tongue and English.
  • Furthermore, the filled application form and the reproductions in digital format (for the purpose of printing the Biennial catalogue) must be sent to the following email addresses: [email protected].
  • The name of the photography file sent by e-mail must be the same as the title of the photography sent by post and they must contain the name and surname of the student.

B. BY E-MAIL

    • All works and filled application form should be sent to the following email addresses: [email protected].

The works sent by email must meet these condition:

  • file format: non-layered TIFF or JPEG
  • resolution: no longer than 35 cm the shorter side in 300 dpi
  • color: sRGB
  • the file size MUST NOT exceed 10 MB
  • The name of the photography file sent by e-mail must contain the name and surname of the student. For example if student’s name is Johann Strauss the file name should be Johann Strauss 1.tiff, Johann Strauss 2.tiff, Johann Strauss 3.tiff.

2015 International WaterCentre (IWC) Masters Scholarships for study in Australia

The IWC Masters Scholarships are prestigious scholarships awarded annually to high calibre candidates who clearly demonstrate potential to become future water leaders. Scholarships are available to study the IWC Master of Integrated Water Management (MIWM).

The International WaterCentre (IWC) will be offering up to three scholarships for international candidates for full-time study of the MIWM program starting in Semester 1, 2016. These include:

Eligibility requirements

To apply for a scholarship, you must have all of the following:

  • A completed undergraduate degree in a related field of study from an internationally-recognised institution;
  • At least two years of professional experience (paid work or volunteering experience) relevant to the program;
  • International candidates must also demonstrate English Language Proficiency (see UQ’s Policy including minimum scores for IELTS, TOEFL or PTE). A proof of English language proficiency needs to be uploaded with the online application form.

Scholarship Details:

  • Each scholarship is valued at approximately AU$ 89,811 and will cover:
  • Full tuition fees for full-time study of the IWC Master of Integrated Water Management
  • program commencing in 2016 (valued at AU$ 49,920 over 18 months)
  • Return air travel to Australia (single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route up to a maximum of AU$ 2,500)
  • Cost of student visa for a single student (valued at AU$ 535)
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (valued at AU$ 856 for 18 months)
  • Living costs stipend (valued at AU 36,000 for 16 months) payable in equal monthly instalments

The XIV World Forestry Congress, hosted by the Republic of South Africa, will bring together the global forestry community to review and analyse the key issues and to share ways of addressing them.

The Congress – the first to be held in Africa – is inclusive of people from all countries, regions and sectors, whether they belong to a government organization, NGO, private company, scientific or professional body, a forestry society, or simply have a personal interest in attending.

All photo entries should feature both forests (or forest products) and people.

Eligibility

  • Entrants should be 18 or above and must have taken the photograph themselves.
  • The photographs should not have been taken before 1 January 2013.
  • Photographs should not have dates or text on top of the image.
  • Each participant can send up to three photographs.
  • All photographs should be in jpeg format.
  • Participants must fill out a form indicating:
  • Name, surname, date of birth, email, title and description of photograph, location and date when photo was taken.
  • Participants must also accept the legal conditions described in the form.

Format

File size: Minimum pixel width 1754 pixels at 150 ppi; maximum file size 5 MB.

Image data files should be created with digital smartphones and still cameras (including medium and large-format cameras).

Images that have been retouched using software or by other means will be accepted. Both colour and monochrome images will be accepted. (Scans of photographs taken by film cameras are not eligible.)

The standard colour space for the judging process is sRGB.

Prize:

  • The prize for the winner will be a trip to the Congress (travel, accommodation and registration fee), as well as a portfolio review by Stuart Franklin.
  • The winning photograph and 15 runners-up will also feature in a XIV World Forestry Congress calendar.

Jury:

  • Award-winning Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin will lead the jury. Franklin is perhaps best known for his celebrated photograph of a man defying a tank in Tiananmen Square, China, in 1989, as well as his photographic essay The Time of Trees, which examines the social relationship between nature and society.

Scholarships may be available on a very competitive basis. UNITAR does not possess its own funds to support students but makes every effort to raise funds from donors and sponsors.

Eligibility Requirements:

The following criteria are used by UNITAR to rank applications and award the Outstanding Peacekeeper Scholarships and Outstanding Peacebuilder Scholarships:

  • Proven ability to implement activities related to peace and conflict management in a conflict or post-conflict context;
  • Relevance of degree for career advancement and professional performance;
  • Citizenship of a developing country;
  • Low financial resources;
  • No previous studies at the graduate level;
  • Years of relevant professional experience;
  • Academic excellence at the high school and undergraduate levels.

Scholarship Worth:

  • Recipients will benefit from a 50% discount on the full tuition fees, the equivalent of USD 5,700. Recipients may pay the remaining fees (USD 5,700) in up to three instalments.
  • Two Outstanding Peacebuilder Scholarships

These scholarships are available on a very competitive basis for individuals engaged in peacebuilding at any level (international, regional, national or local). Peacebuilding is here defined broadly to include all professional or voluntary activities that contribute to the establishment of long-lasting peace including conflict management, early warning, peace education, development assistance, humanitarian work, etc.

Scholarship Worth:

Visa pour l’Image–Perpignan is launching the seventh competition for the Web Documentary Visa d’or award sponsored by RFI & France 24. The Visa d’or for the best Web documentary will be awarded for the best story produced with original, innovative use of multimedia tools.
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Entry in the competition is open to all candidates aged 18 years or over, regardless of gender or nationality.

Selection:

The web documentaries submitted should, in particular, open up new ways of using the Web to
understand the news.
The selection process will therefore take the following criteria into account:
• the web documentary must be related to a recent news topic
• the web documentary should demonstrate a journalistic and/or documentary approach to the treatment of a topical news item. The choice of subject treated in the web documentary will be taken into account in the selection process;
• the web documentary should demonstrate a multimedia approach with, in particular, combined use of several media-video, text, photos and sound-for online distribution. Photo slideshows will not be accepted.
• the web documentary should allow for true interactivity and should innovate in this domain. The user should be able to react to and become involved with the web documentary as well as able to adjust his / her navigation.
• through their web documentary, candidates should innovate and develop or contribute to a new, innovative and easy-to-access way of exploring news on the Web;
• production quality

Prizes

  • Among the Pre-selected Candidates, the jury will give the Award to the winner as concerns the relevance, quality and originality of the web documentary.
  • Images Evidence will award the winner a prize of € 8000.
  • The winner must be able to attend, when possible, the award ceremony, which will take place in Perpignan during the 2015 Visa Pour l’Image – Perpignan festival.
  • The amount of € 8000 will be given to the author(s) of the web documentary and not to the producer(s). Charge to the authors, if there are several, to share this amount.
Requirements:
Entries must comply with the following conditions:
  • Entry in the competition is open to all candidates aged 18 years or over, regardless of gender or nationality.
  • The competition is not open to people employed by Images Evidence.
  • Web documentaries produced by Images Evidence cannot enter the competition.
  • And their application must include the following items / documents:
    1 -The internet URL where the web documentary is available;

RCS hope that ‘Out of the Blue’ will inspire Commonwealth citizens to use photography to engage with the vast blue world around the Commonwealth, to celebrate its beauty, highlight its importance and alert global leaders to its vulnerability.

By doing so, people of the Commonwealth can directly encourage global leaders to take positive action and adopt more of the solutions that we know are at hand to protect and use natural resources in a sustainable way.

Competition entries are invited in the following categories.

Nature’s Assets

Images in this theme will be judged on their power to inspire a greater appreciation of the natural riches of our blue world.

People and the Oceans

Images in this theme will be judged on their ability to convey the interdependence between the human world and that of the oceans, seas and coastal environments. Winning entries might, for example, emphasize how healthy marine environments sustain people’s welfare through fishing or tourism.

Human Impacts

Images submitted in this category will be judged on the extent to which they might raise awareness about the different ways in which the human race can impact on oceans, whether positively or negatively.

Prize:

  • The winning entries will be showcased at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting that will take place in Malta in November 2015 through an exhibition that will be in place for the run up to and during the Heads of Government meetings.

The United Nations – The Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme
~ Human Resources Development and Advancement of the Legal Order of the World’s Oceans

The objective of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for advanced education and research in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science in support of management frameworks, to Government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing States, so that they may obtain the necessary knowledge to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in UNCLOS and related instruments.

Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows should have an advanced awareness and understanding of key issues and best international practices in ocean affairs and are expected to return to their home-countries to contribute their experience to assist with the effective implementation of UNCLOS and related instruments and programmes.

Programme Structure

The 9-month Fellowship Programme is composed of two consecutive phases which provide Fellows with advanced and customized research and training opportunities in their chose fields:

  • Phase One: 3-month Research and Training – normally undertaken at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • Phase Two: 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study – undertaken at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions and under the guidance of subject matter expert(s) who have recognized in-depth expertise in the Fellows’ chosen field of study.

Application Procedure:

  • Do you work directly on law of the Sea and Ocean Affairs issues, including marine scientific aspects?
  • Could you benefit from a nine-month research and study fellowship which will provide you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills?
  • Will your Government or employer or competent organization confirm the above by nominating you?

Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates must:

  • Be Nominated by their Government, employer or competent organization;
  • Be between the ages of 25 and 40;
  • Possess a first university degree in a related discipline, and have a demonstrated ability to undertake independent advanced research and studies in an academic context;
  • Be mid-level professionals who can demonstrate the they work directly on ocean issues;
  • Be in a position to accept placement with host institutions for a period of no less that nine consecutive months;
  • Be in a position to obtain all relevant visas including transit visasThe Programme is conducted in English and can accommodate Francophone fellows

Web We Want aims to award grants of USD1500.00 to 10 African organisations that produce animations, songs, videos, or other original works that creatively promote the African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms.

  • The grant amount is USD1500.00 and the selected proposals will be chosen by a commission composed by three experts.

OpenCon 2015 is the student and early career academic professional conference on Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data and will be held on November 14-16, 2015 in Brussels, Belgium. It is organized by the Right to Research Coalition, SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), and an Organizing Committee of students and early career researchers from around the world.

The meeting will convene students and early career academic professionals from around the world and serve as a powerful catalyst for projects led by the next generation to advance OpenCon’s three focus areas—Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data. Participants for the conference will be selected through an application process.

OpenCon 2015 will feature leading speakers from across the Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data movements as well as workshops organized by those leading the most interesting projects and campaigns.

Eligibility:

  • OpenCon’s target audience is students of all levels, early career researchers, and young professionals in fields related to scholarly and scientific research (e.g. librarians, professional advocates, etc).
  • Early career academic professional is a flexible term and generally means someone within 8-10 years of the beginning of their professional career (i.e. after graduating with their terminal degree).

Scholarships:

  • OpenCon is a unique meeting in that the organizers will provide full or partial travel scholarships to a large number of the participants at the meeting. In 2014, more than 80% of participants received full travel scholarships.
  • The application process will be competitive, so in addition to applying for a general travel scholarship, Opencon also encourage applicants to consider asking their institutions to secure one of our remaining sponsored scholarships.
  • Travel scholarships will cover all or part of the cost of your travel to Brussels, accommodation (shared room), and potential visa processing fees for OpenCon. It does not cover travel expenses to and from the airport, meals that are not provided at the conference (most or all will be provided), and other incidental costs.
  • Unfortunately, due to the number of scholarships Opencon will be granting, Opencon cannot process any reimbursements from receipts.

The Islamic Development Bank established the IDB Prize for Women’s Contribution to Development in 2006 to draw international attention to the vital role women play in developing their communities and the world.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible for the Prize, organizations must meet the following requirements:

The Prize consists of two cash awards;

2015 MOFCOM Scholarship for study in the People’s Republic of China

MOFCOM Scholarship is set up by Ministry of Commerce of People’s Republic of China to further strengthen the communication and cooperation between China and other countries as well as to develop talents for developing countries.

Starting from 2015, MOFCOM Scholarship mainly sponsors the young and the middle-aged talents from recipient countries to pursue their postgraduate degree education in China and entrusts China Scholarship Council to administer the Scholarship.

What:

MOFCOM Scholarship supports Master’s program for 2-3 years or PhD program for 3-4 years. Scholarship winners must register for English-taught program if such program is available. When only Chinese-taught program is available, students should take Chinese language training courses for one to two years before moving on to their degree study.

Eligibility:

To be eligible, applicants must:

-be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health;

-be a bachelor’s degree holder when applying for master’s program;

-be a master’s degree holder when applying for doctoral program;

-be under the age of 45 when applying;

-have sufficient English or Chinese proficiency which meets the academic requirements of the program.

2015 UN Human Rights Commission Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent, Geneva Switzerland

The Fellowship will be held from 2 to 20 November 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent provides the participants with an intensive learning opportunity to deepen their understanding of the United Nations human rights system, instruments and mechanisms, with a focus on issues of particular relevance to people of African descent.

The Fellowship Programme will allow the participants to better contribute to the protection and promotion of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of people of African descent in their respective countries.

The first Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent was launched by the Anti-Racial Discrimination Section of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2011 in the context of the International Year for People of African Descent.

In the framework of the Programme of Activities for the Implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent, this year the programme will coincide with the first session of the UN Forum for People of African Descent. This will enable the fellows to attend and contribute to the work of the secretariat of the Forum and to the Forum itself.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The candidate must be an individual of African descent living in the Diaspora.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 4 years of work experience related to the rights of People of African Descent.
  • The candidate needs to have sufficient command of the English language to be able to participate fully in the programme.
  • The candidate has to submit a letter of support from an organization working on issues related to People of African Descent or minority rights.
  • The candidates must be available to attend the full duration of the programme. The selected fellows will be expected to participate in different activities and to strictly follow the programme.

Benefits:

  • Each fellow is entitled to a return ticket (economy class) from the country of residence to Geneva;
  • Basic health insurance; and a stipend to cover modest accommodation and other living expenses for the duration of the Programme.

2016 Public Policy and Good Governance (PPGG) DAAD Master Scholarships for study in Germany (Fully Funded with 750 €/month Stipend)

This programme is designed to further qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them in a praxis-oriented course for their professional life.

The programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree the chance to obtain a Master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.

The following Master courses can be undertaken at selected Universities.

Scholarship Worth:

  • DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 €.
  • The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany.
  • In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances.
  • DAAD-scholarship holders are exempt from tuition fees.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries.
  • The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.
  • The scholarship scheme is open to candidates from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia as well as from countries in the Middle East (see list of countries).

Are you between 18 and 30 and passionate about combating climate change?

The Global Youth Video Competition on Climate Change showcasing youth climate action.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change has teamed up with tve to launch a video competition for the best youth climate projects happening around the globe.

And the prize for two lucky winners is a trip to the Paris Climate conference in December and the chance to produce daily video blogs and stories for an audience on the web on events, people and activities of interest to young people around the globe.

tvebiomovies is a film competition now in its sixth year, and open to people around the world with access to a camera. Submit a winning film about the action you are taking on climate change and you could win a trip to Paris to report on the Climate Change talks in December.

Alternatively, you could receive US$300 to produce a one-minute film about the environment. Which bit of the environment? Choose a category and decide. Your film could be funny or serious, an animation, a drama or a documentary.

Guidelines

  • Entrants must be between 18 and 30 year old on 15 November 2015.
  • Films must be a maximum of three minutes in duration, including credits and titles. Any film that is longer than this length will be disqualified.
  • Films should be short reports about the activity or action in which you are involved.
  • Films must be submitted to tve ([email protected]) via file transfer (www.wetransfer.com) in the format of flv, mov, mp4, wmv or zip along with a completed online entry form.
  • You must agree to all the terms and conditions to enter the competition.

How to Enter:

  • Make a three minute film about the action you are involved in to combat climate change.
  • Complete your entry using the online form and send the film before 23.00 GMT 17 August 2015. The videos may be recorded in any language, but English subtitles must be provided.
  • Films which meet the criteria will be uploaded to tve‘s You Tube channel tveinspiringchange and a shortlist of entries will be viewed by the judging panel.

There are two categories for you to choose from. In each one, 3 films would be commissioned t. The completed films will be shown on YouTube and the one in each category which has the most views will win US$1500!

Applications are now open for the 4th IREX annual Make a Better World Photo Contest! Enter now for a chance to win cash prizes totaling over $1,000. You are encouraged to submit your best images of scenes and individuals around the world that reflect IREX’s tagline, “Make a Better World.”

Requirements:

• Entries are limited to 5 photos per person.

• Entrants may only win one prize.

• All entries must be in digital format and at the highest resolution possible in a .jpeg, .jpg, or .png format. Files submitted may not be larger than 10 megabytes.

• All entrants must hold exclusive rights to the photographs they submit and by entering are claiming such ownership.

• By entering the Contest, all entrants grant an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide non-exclusive license to IREX, to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the entries.

Categories

Photos should demonstrate one or more of three theme categories:

There are five prizes total. A panel of international development and photography experts will choose the winners for the

CIVICUS is proud to announce one United Nations (UN) Learning Exchange opportunity, sponsored by Irish Aid, focused on Strengthening the Voice of African Civil Society and human rights defenders in the international human rights system. The position will be based at the CIVICUS UN Office in Geneva from 7 September to 7 December 2015.

This Learning Exchange is designed to familiarize the candidate with the United Nations system and bring information pertaining to African civil society to the Human Rights Council (HRC), the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process, and Special Procedures, (Special Rapporteurs and Working Groups are part of Special Procedures).

During a three-month period the candidate will be based in Geneva Switzerland, and work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Geneva Office.  He/she will assist in the preparation of reports or statements and help to coordinate engagement during the 30th Session of the Human Rights Council, the 23rd UPR session, the Minority Forum and the Forum on Business and Human Rights.

Qualifications and Experience
•    A degree in Human Rights, International Affairs or a related field;
•    Experience of working with human rights community in one or more African countries and a thorough knowledge of regional human rights issues within Africa;
•    Fluency in English is essential, French would be an advantage;
•    Demonstrated professionalism, diplomatic skills and analytical diligence;
•    Willingness to travel to Geneva for three months.

Remuneration
Interns will receive accommodation in Geneva, round trip airfare and a stipend of €600 a month to cover living costs.

Phandulwazi nge China (isiXhosa for Understanding China) scholarships offer opportunities for African researchers to spend research time at the Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS). The aim is to advance mutual learning and a better exchange on interpretations of the impact of Chinese engagement in Africa, expanding the African knowledge base.
The Phandulwazi nge China scholarship targets citizens of African states from academia or the broader civil society with a proven research interest in China-Africa relations.
The programme particularly addresses African scholars who are preparing for a stay in China or are returning from a longer stay in China. With the scholarship, African citizens are supported to continue working on China and China- Africa relations and to deepen their analytical work.
The scholarship involves:
  • A fully funded 3-month visit at the CCS at Stellenbosch University, in the second half of 2015, including a fully funded short research trip to China during the stay at the CCS.
  • Providing space for-and strengthening experience in evidence-based research that feeds into policy recommendation.
  • Work and interaction with research within the CCS, with an opportunity for intellectual exchange and public engagement on a topic relevant for China-Africa relations.
  • Publication of research results in a CCS publication format.
Applicants must:
  • Be a citizen of an African state.
  • Have a strong social science, humanities, law or economics background.
  • Be diligent and reliable in their work and have proven strong writing and research skills.
  • (Basic) Mandarin language skills are not prerequisite, but will be an asset in the application
Application:
  • The CCS offers a scholarship for the time between August and October 2015.
  • Applications must include a full CV (max. 3 pages) and motivation letter of no more than 500 words.
  • A brief research outline (max. 750 words), with clear title, research question, abstract and methodology.
  • In addition to the research outline, include a short literature review and bibliography (max. 500 words excluding the bibliography)
  • Applications should indicate institutional affiliation
  • Scholars will be expected to compile their findings in a CCS Research Report

Interested students may choose one of the respective areas of study:

Those who wish to study in Japan as an undergraduate student must choose a field of study (major) from (1) or (2) below. Applicants may enter a first, second, and third choice.

  • Social Sciences and Humanities -A: Law, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese language, others. Social Sciences and Humanities-B: Economics, Business Administration. Note 1: Applicants who wish to major in fields other than those listed above (“others”) may have difficulties in finding universities that can accept them. Note 2: Any fields related to “Economics” and “Business Administration” in Humanities B are not included in “others.”
  • Natural Sciences

However, a student who selects Course C as his/her first choice may choose his/her second-choice subjects from Course B or C and third-choice subject from Course B as Course C offers only two subjects.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Japanese Government Scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must have the nationality of a country which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government;
  • You need to be born between April 2, 1994 and April 1, 1999;
  • Applicants must either have completed a 12-year regular course of school education or have graduated from a school equivalent to an upper secondary school in Japan;
  • Applicants must be willing to learn the Japanese language and deepen their understanding on Japan;
  • Applicants must be physically and mentally healthy enough to pursue study at a university in Japan;
  • Selected applicants must acquire “College Student” visas before entering Japan. The visas should be issued at the Japanese diplomatic mission, located in the country of applicants, nationality;
  • Applicants must be able to arrive in Japan between the 1st and 7th of April 2016.

Scholarship Worth:

The Japanese Government will provide:

  • Monthly fee of 117.000 Japanese yens (In case that the recipient research in a designated region, 2,000 or 3,000 yen per month will be added. The monetary amount each year may be subject to change due to budgetary reasons.);
  • Travel fee to and from Japan;
  • Accommodation at the Universities campus.

Applicants must submit the following documents to the Japanese diplomatic missions by the required date.

The submitted documents will not be returned. You need the following documents:

  • Application Form (by the prescribed forms);
  • Placement Preference Form (prescribed form for applicants for direct placement only);
  • Photographs (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm, Upper body, Full-faced, Uncapped) taken within the past 6 months (name and nationality should be written on the reverse photo to be pasted onto the application documents. Digital photographs also acceptable);
  • Academic transcript for the past 3 years;
  • Recommendation from the principal or the adviser of the last school attended;
  • Graduation certificate of the last school attended (or certificate of expected graduation for an applicant due to graduate) -Certificate of passage of university entrance qualification examination (if applicable);
  • Certificate of enrollment (for an applicant currently enrolled in a university);
  • Medical certificate (on the prescribed form).

43North is part of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Buffalo Billion initiative, with support from the New York Power Authority.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • 43North is open to applicants ages 18 and over, from anywhere in the world, in any industry, other than retail and hospitality.

Eligibility and Applications

To be eligible, applications shall include, but not be limited to, the following information:

a.  executive summary of the business;
b.  biography or biographies of the management team;
c.  mission statement;
d.  business objectives;
d.  market overview;
e.  business case; and
f.  projected capital requirements and two-year projected financial budgets (together with two years of
historic financial statements if available), and such other information as requested by 43North.
g. Applicants whose business is based upon proprietary technology or methods shall provide a statement
describing the basis for their rights in such proprietary technology or methods (ie: the applicant invented
the technology or has a license for such technology).

Nature of Businesses

The Competition focuses on applicants that intend to become operating companies.  All applicants must be seeking outside equity capital in addition to the awards to be awarded in the Competition.  Companies that intend to license technologies from universities or research labs are encouraged.

Benefits:

  • Award of one $1 million grand prize, six $500,000 prizes and four $250,000 prizes.
  • Winners also receive incubator space for a year, mentorship, tons of marketing exposure and access to START-UP NY, which offers freedom from state taxes for 10 years.
