2016 Next Einstein Forum (NEF) Young Ambassador Programme for Africans (Fully Funded to Dakar Senegal to attend the 2016 NEF Global Gathering )

The Next Einstein Forum (NEF) is working to build a targeted team of 54 young Ambassadors, one from each African country, to participate in the NEF Global Gathering 2016, champion African science, technology, engineering and math globally and become part of the growing NEF community.

The first NEF Global Gathering will be hosted by H.E. President Macky Sall in Dakar, Senegal from the 8-10 March, 2016. The three-day NEF Global Gathering will showcase often underreported scientific progress in Africa, holding up the NEF Fellows as examples of the exceptional scientific potential and progress across Africa.

NEF Country Ambassadors Benefits

Represent your country at NEF events
Attend the prestigious, invitation-only NEF Global Gathering with all costs covered. The event will include Nobel Prize winners, heads of state and representatives from leading global corporations.
Participate in interviews, panels and the showcasing of research, NEF work and articles on science, social science and technology, among other events during/following the NEF Global Gathering.
Have the opportunity to network with other experts and NEF Fellows, as well as top scientists, social scientists and technology leaders from around the world
Influence science, social science and technology policy through NEF articles and documents and share their own work.
Pitch your own projects and ideas to high profile NEF members and contribute to the establishment of a positive global view of science in Africa

Eligibility Requirements:

42 years of age or less as of 31 December, 2015
Resident of an African country
A history of leadership and engagement in the community
Advanced studies or professional certificates, personal projects, demonstrated entrepreneurial achievements and similar – a Doctorate is not required
Applicants are encouraged from all fields of science, including basic sciences, STEM, health and social science fields
Demonstrated passion for raising Africa’s profile in science and/or social science
An active profile in the community of work/study and/or online including social media
Able to clearly communicate to an audience in English or French

NEF Country Ambassadors Responsibilities

Act as NEF’s ambassador, representing one’s own country at NEF events.
Write original content and cross-post content for the NEF, including but not limited to blog articles, news updates on science in one’s local community, profiles of scientists in one’s community, and other activities to promote the NEF
- Actively promote the NEF to social media followers and regularly contribute ideas to the NEF team about ways to keep the online community informed and interested in the NEF
- Ambassadors should expect to spend a total of between 1 to 2 hours per week writing, editing, posting updates, news and articles related to science in Africa and the NEF, and conversing with NEF Fellows and the scientific community at large. The hours may increase during the week of the Global Gathering event
- Make presentations to students, audiences, special classes and events about the NEF and science in Africa
- Other responsibilities suggested and recommended by the Ambassadors

Selection Guidelines

Selection of ambassadors from individual countries will be based on merit and upon submission of a written application, CV and two-minute video answering the personal statement questions below.
Qualification will be based on academic and leadership potential. Examples of notable achievements to be considered in the selection of a NEF Ambassador include:
- Membership in professional associations/bodies
- Leadership role in projects/activities/communities
- Entrepreneurial activities
- Articles/blogs/applications published
- Prizes and other awards in high ranking bodies, academies, communities etc.
- The type and number of invited talks at national, regional and international conferences
- Past academic achievements and involvements
- Volunteer and internship experience
The personal statement should address the following two questions:
- What I want to learn from and share at the NEF Global Gathering?
- What are at least three strategies I will use to share this knowledge with at least 20,000 people when I return to my country?

Selection Process

The selection will be done by a panel of eminent scientists including members of the NEF Scientific Programme Committee.
The selection process will aim for the following:
- At least 40 percent of selected NEF Ambassadors are women
- At most one NEF Ambassador from each African country

2016 John Dillon Memorial Fellowship for Developing Countries Students, Australia

The John Dillon Memorial Fellowship was established by ACIAR in recognition of Professor John L. Dillon’s life-long support for international agricultural research. The Fellowship scheme serves the memory of John Dillon by providing career development opportunities for outstanding young agricultural scientists or economists from ACIAR partner countries who are involved in a current or recently completed ACIAR project. 8-10 Fellowships are offered annually.

The Fellowship aims to develop leadership skills in the areas of agricultural research management, agricultural policy and/or extension technologies. This is achieved by providing exposure to Australian agriculture across a range of best-practice organisations involved in research, extension and/or policy making.

Eligible African Countries

Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe can apply for these John Dillon Memorial fellowships.

Fellowship Worth:

Arrangements for the Fellowships will be flexible, and the following points are intended to indicate features of the program:

Fellowships normally involve a 5-6 week period in Australia.
Fellows are hosted by 1-2 Australian organisations (such as a Federal Government Department, a University, a Cooperative Research Centre or State Department of Agriculture) where they spend at least 50 % of their Fellowship period.
Fellows participate in a formal research management training course in Australia.
Fellows undertake a structured program of visits to various institutes, including the presentation of relevant lectures.

How to Apply:

Applications close on 31 August of the year prior to the visit program taking place.

Applicants must be associated with ACIAR bilateral projects that are either active or completed in the last 24 months.
The Fellow can be associated with either a National Agricultural Research System or a CGIAR centre (if the applicant is involved in an ACIAR bilateral project), but must be a citizen of an ACIAR partner country.

2016/2017 Czech Republic Government Scholarships for Developing Countries

The Government of the Czech Republic offers scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.

These so called Government Scholarships are designed to cover the standard length of study:

1) in Bachelor/Master/Doctoral study programmes plus one-year preparatory course of the Czech language (which is combined with other field-specific training). Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from upper secondary schools, or Bachelor’s/Master’s degree courses, as applicable, who can enrol only in study programmes in which instruction is given in the Czech language. Depending on the subject area, applicants are normally required to sit entrance examinations at the higher education institution concerned. Successful passing of entrance examinations constitutes a precondition for the scholarship award;

2) in follow-up Master study programmes or Doctoral study programmes. Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates of Bachelor or Master study programmes, respectively, who enrol in study programmes with instruction in the English language.

ELIGIBILITY :

The scholarships are intented solely to promote the studies of adults who are foreign nationals from developing third countries in need. Neither a citizen of the Czech Republic, nor a citizen of a member state of the European Union, nor any other foreign national with a permit to permanent residence on the territory of the Czech Republic may therefore be granted this type of scholarship.
Furthermore, the scholarships may not be granted to persons under 18 years of age. (The applicants have to turn 18 as of 1 September of the year when they commence studies in the Czech Republic at the latest.)
A limited number of scholarships is offered also to applicants from selected developing countries through the UNESCO. Each applicant is obliged to fill out an electronic application form available at: http://registr.dzs.cz/registr.nsf/unesco.
Prospective applicants are advised to address their inquiries concerning, among others, their eligibility and closing date for applications to the Czech Embassies in their countries.

The 2015 call for new members to join the Global Young Academy in 2016 is now open. Applications are sought from young, independent scholars who combine the highest level of research excellence with a demonstrated passion for delivering impact.

The Global Young Academy (GYA) provides a rallying point for outstanding young scientists from around the world to come together to address topics of global importance. As of 2014, the GYA has reached its full capacity with 200 members, leading young scientists (defined as an average age of 35 years and at the beginning of their independent academic career) from 58 countries and all continents, and 63 alumni. Members are selected for the excellence of their science and their commitment to service and are serving five-year terms

Research fields:

The call is open to all scholars working in any research-based discipline, including the sciences, medicine, engineering, social sciences, the arts and humanities.

Excellence:

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of excellence in their discipline.

Impact:

The Global Young Academy is committed to a broad range of programs around the world to support young scholars, promote science to a broad audience, engage in policy debate, and foster international and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Applicants should provide evidence of interest or experience in one or more of these areas.

Age/career point:

Applicants should be in the early years of their independent careers.

The majority of the GYA’s members are aged 30-40 and the typical period from completion of a PhD or similar degree is 5-10 years.

Applicants falling significantly outside these ranges may be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Application is welcomed from all qualified candidates.

Applications from women, researchers in the social sciences, arts and humanities, scholars working in government, industry, and non-governmental sectors, and from candidates in regions where the GYA has no current representation are particularly welcome.

The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards comprises national and international adjudication. The first assessment of entries is at country level with a panel of local judges selecting country winners and runners-up who go through a round of preliminary judging which culminates in the selection of the final winners. A regional panel selects the top four entries.

Last year the panel was chaired by the inspirational European Space Agency Astronaut, Paolo Nespoli, assisted by a panel of industry experts who commended the standard of the competition.

Prize:

Country winners receive exciting country prizes and go on to compete against each other for the overall continental awards.
The overall essay and poster winners are eligible for a once in a lifetime trip for two to the Eutelsat facilities in Paris, with the essay winner traveling onwards to witness a live rocket launch.
Runners up will win a trip to South Africa as guests of MultiChoice Africa. Schools attended by the overall winners will also receive a DStv installation, including dish, television, state-of-the-art PVR decoder and free access to the DStv Education Bouquet.

2015 UNESCO/Merck Africa Research Summit in Geneva, Switzerland 19th-20th October 2015

The Merck Africa Research Summit- MARS is being organised by Merck, in collaboration with UNESCO, the Cambridge-Africa Programme at the University of Cambridge, and Universita di Roma, Italy. MARS aims to bring together researchers from across Africa to discuss the generation, sharing and dissemination of research data, and to prepare for the road ahead in Africa’s development as an international hub for research excellence and scientific innovation.

The annual Summit aims to contribute to building research capacity in African research community on health, with special focus on Ebola and emergent infectious diseases, to showcase innovative research taking place in projects, programs and initiatives across African universities, and by the wider African research community.

Whom

Up to 100 scientists / researchers will be able to attend the Summit.
Abstracts are invited from final year African PhD students and young investigators involved in HIV, Ebola and other infectious disease research.
All should be primarily based at African research institutes and Universities.

It provided a networking platform for dialogue on improving global cooperation on health research and narrowing the disparities in health systems performance between developing and developed countries. The United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) invites media worldwide to submit entries for its 20th Annual UNCA Awards for the best print, broadcast (TV & Radio) and online, web-based media coverage of the United Nations, U.N. agencies and field operations.

UNCA is a professional organization of over 200 journalists from dozens of countries representing scores of publications and broadcasters from all regions of the world, plus the major global news agencies.

The awards are open to all journalists anywhere in the world.

The Awards are:

1. The Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize, sponsored by the Alexander Bodini Foundation, for written media (including online media). The prize is for print and online coverage of the U.N. and U.N. agencies, named in honor of Elizabeth Neuffer, The Boston Globe bureau chief at the U.N., who died while on an assignment in Baghdad in 2003.

2. The Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize, for broadcast (TV & Radio) media. The prize is for broadcast coverage of the U.N. and U.N. agencies, named in honor of Ricardo Ortega, formerly the New York correspondent for Antena 3 TV of Spain, who died while on an assignment in Haiti in 2004.

3. The Prince Albert II of Monaco and UNCA Global Prize for coverage of Climate Change. The prize is for print (including online media) and broadcast media (TV & Radio) for coverage of sustainable and equitable management of natural resources and the implementation of innovative and ethical solutions in three main categories: climate change, biodiversity, and water.

4. The United Nations Foundation Prize. The prize is for print (including online media) and broadcast media (TV & Radio) for coverage of humanitarian and development aspects of the U.N. and U.N. agencies.

Requirements:

Coverage of the U.N. and U.N. agencies is specified in each category; the Committee welcomes coverage of all issues particularly on Millennium Developments Goals, peacekeeping operations, and nonproliferation, including the elimination of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.
Work in print, broadcast (TV & Radio), and online coverage must be published between September 2014 and August 2015, and be related to the U.N. and U.N. agencies.

Do you know a young person making a positive difference in your community or country?

Nominations are open for the 2016 Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work. These awards recognise inspiring young people whose development work has had a significant impact on people and communities in their country or region.

Young people aged 15 to 29 years can apply for the awards, which celebrate the achievements of those who lead initiatives to enhance democracy and development, from poverty alleviation to climate change, to peace building.

A total of 16 finalists will be shortlisted from four Commonwealth regional categories: Africa and Europe, Asia, Americas and Caribbean, and Pacific.

Criteria for nomination

Individuals are able to nominate themselves or can be nominated by someone who is able to vouch for the legitimacy of the nominee’s development work. The nominee must meet the following criteria:

The nominee must have been engaged in their development work for more than 12 months either in a professional or voluntary capacity
The nominee must be from a Commonwealth member country
The development work must be ongoing and in a Commonwealth member country
The nominee should not be older than 29 on 31 December 2016
Nominees should give permission for their names to be put forward (if nominated by someone else).
Award winners and finalists must agree to take part in publicity and activities generated by the Commonwealth.
The development work can be within any number of areas, including agriculture, skills training, arts and culture, environment protection, education, health and well-being, human rights, information and communications technology, journalism and many more areas including sport, science and sustainability.

Benefits:

A winner will be selected from each region, and invited to London, United Kingdom, in early 2016 for a formal awards presentation.
In addition to four regional award winners, one exceptional entrant will be recognised as Commonwealth Young Person of the Year 2016 for Excellence in Development Work.
The finalists will receive cash grants of GBP£1,000 to continue their development work, and will each be awarded a trophy and certificate.
Each regional winner will receive a cash grant of GBP£3,000, while the Commonwealth Young Person of the Year will receive GBP£5,000 to support an ongoing project or initiative.

After a long period of economic slump in Japan, some encouraging signs of sustainable development finally are appearing, and some analysts are reassessing the value of the Japanese economy.

The Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) led by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network have launched Fellowship opportunities for journalists to attend the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) being held in Paris, France.

Formed in 2007 by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), Panos London and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the CCMP has brought developing country journalists to the annual UN climate summits since 2007.

This has enabled them to cover the summit for their home media organizations, work with experienced and knowledgeable journalists from around the world, and gain a multifaceted understanding of climate change’s global impact. Numerous regional organizations also play a supporting role in the partnership.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for this Fellowship, applicants must:

Be a professional journalist from or representing an established media house.
Fill out the application form at the link below, including answering essay questions that illustrate his/her commitment to reporting on climate change issues
Be available to travel to Paris, France with arrival in Paris on November 30, 2015 and leave no earlier than Dec 13, 2015.
Provide a letter of support from an editor, producer or supervisor who can confirm your ability to publish or broadcast your material in an established media organization. Freelancers are welcome to apply, but must provide this letter of support

Benefits:

CCMP will cover travel, lodging and daily subsistence expenses, arrange press accreditation at COP21, and provide other support services.
During the COP 21, the Fellows will benefit from a series of specially designed activities, including an orientation session, daily breakfast briefings, and most likely a field trip and a media clinic.
Please note that, although the costs for visas will be reimbursed, the process of obtaining a visa is a Fellow’s responsibility.

Over the past decade, the annual CGAP Photo Contest has documented the remarkable ways that access to formal financial services can improve poor people’s day-to-day activities.

During this time much has changed. New innovations, such as digital financial services, offer great promise for better serving poor customers. Now in its 10th year, the annual CGAP Photo Contest aims to demonstrate the ways financial inclusion can help poor people transition out of poverty and lead more financially secure lives.

WHO:

The 2015 CGAP Photo Contest is open to all photographers at least 18 years old. (The operational team of CGAP, the World Bank, and their immediate families are excluded from participating.)

2015 CGAP Photo Contest Theme:

Digital Finance – Unbanked people are increasingly gaining access to financial services through mobile phones and other digital channels. Show us how poor customers are using digital services.
Smallholders Families – Smallholder farming households represent the largest client segment by livelihood of those living on less than US$2 a day. Show us how smallholder farmers and their families are putting financial services to use.
Women’s Use of Financial Services – Improving access to financial services helps women achieve economic freedom to make better choices – not only for themselves but also for their families. Show us how women around the world are improving their lives with financial services.

2016 CIPE /Atlas Corp Think Tank LINKS Fellowship for Young Professionals from Developing Countries, USA (Fully Funded)

CIPE and Atlas Corps have jointly launched the new Think Tank LINKS (Leaders, Innovators, and Knowledge Sharing) Fellowship. This innovative, all-expenses paid program is an opportunity for talented young professionals from developing countries with strong research backgrounds to shadow leading U.S. think tanks for six months.

In addition, Fellows will be enrolled in a professional development training program and join a growing network of nonprofit leaders from around the world.

Eligibility:

CIPE and Atlas Corps are looking for qualified candidates who have:

Demonstrated research background relating to issues of democracy and/or economic reform.
Bachelors degree or higher, preferably in Economics, Public Policy, Finance, or a related field .
At least two (2) years of professional experiences with proven record of research-based work.
Proficiency in English (both in writing and speaking).
Age 35 or younger.
Currently working for a think tank, policy research institution, or a similar organization.

After the initial screening by CIPE and Atlas Corps, top applicants will be interviewed and selected by the respective Host Organization’s staff. Preference will be given to non-OECD applicants.

Location:

Fellows will be based at leading think tanks in Washington, DC area for six months (January through July).
They will serve 40 hours per week at their host think tanks, focused on a mutually agreed-upon research topic that relates to democratic and/or economic reforms.
Fellows are expected to publish their research during the program through articles, blogs, and presentations.

Logistics:

CIPE and Atlas Corps will provide Fellows with logistical support regarding visa, health insurance, stipend, and international travel.
Fellows will also receive a monthly living stipend that covers basic housing, food, and transportation for one person.

Responsibilities of Think Tank LINKS Fellows:

Conduct research on a topic that relates to democratic or economic reforms.
Produce research results that meet the thematic and quality criteria set by CIPE, Atlas Corps, and the host think tank.
Contribute to CIPE’s Development Blog (www.cipe.org/blog) to highlight key findings.
Participate in Atlas Corps Global Leadership Lab training sessions.
Attend orientation, roundtable discussions, and other activities as required by CIPE, Atlas Corps, and the host think tank.
If selected, pay a USD $250 participation fee, which will be returned upon successful completion of the fellowship.
Return to home country after the Fellowship.

Worth:

Postdoctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $67,000, and predoctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $31,000.
This stipend is supplemented by funding for conference and research travel, research assistants, and health insurance coverage. Some teaching is permitted but not required.

The National Geographic Society is currently soliciting nominations for the 2016 Buffett Award for Leadership in African Conservation.

Since 2002, the award has honored the unsung heroes of conservation, celebrating the recipient’s achievements and supporting ongoing work in conserving nature or culture in Africa. The award includes a $25,000 grant.

Past recipients of the National Geographic Society/Buffett Award have conducted

conservation research on elephants and the bush-meat trade in Tanzania,
worked to ensure that local communities in Uganda benefit from conservation initiatives,
developed sustainable agricultural practices for small farmers in Cameroon, and more.

Nomination Process:

Award recipients are chosen from nominations submitted to National Geographic.
After nominations are screened by advisors and other conservation experts, a selection of names is forwarded to the Howard G. Buffett Foundation for review.
Final selection is made by the National Geographic Society.

The award was established through a generous gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Mr. Buffett is a farmer, businessman, conservationist, and photographer. He serves on the NGS Council of Advisors and in 2007 was named Ambassador Against Hunger by the UN World Food Program.

Youth are invited to pitch their idea/initiative which engages youth in agriculture and food systems in a 3 minute video outlining how their initiative will help end hunger and malnutrition. All videos will be featured on the Youth Idea Incubator page of the CFS website.

Ten youth will be selected to deliver their pitch in person to a panel comprised of inspiring individuals working on youth engagement and food security and nutrition, including entrepreneurs, social leaders, academics, and others.
Youth will receive feedback on their ideas and establish contacts with a network of actors engaged in food security and nutrition.
They will also be invited to participate in the full CFS plenary week.

The objective of the event is to facilitate capacity development of youth through feedback from inspiring individuals on their proposals to address food security and nutrition and networking opportunities with key stakeholders.

Miss.Africa Initiative led by DCA Academy, is announcing a Seed Fund in Africa that will a small grants to support women and girls in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields to launch or expand their own initiatives that will increase their digital opportunities in IT related training, jobs and leadership roles.

The program is interested in learning about successful activities that are currently supporting women and girls in STEM, and through this effort, Miss Africa identify how we might support scalability and their impacts.

The 2015 Seed Grant for the amount Five Thousand US dollars ($5,000) will assist the winning initiative to start or expand their capacity.

ELIGIBILITY

To apply for a Miss.Africa Seed Fund grant applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

– Current resident of an African country (including North and Sub-Saharan Africa).
– Application must be submitted in English.
– Applying as an individual (at least 18 years of age), or a representative of a non-governmental organization (NGO) or social enterprise based in Africa.
– Ability to demonstrate previous experience conducting activities supporting women and girls in computer science or STEM fields.
– Commitment to developing and contributing to a virtual community for supporting women and girls initiatives.
– Demonstrated leadership potential (references will be required for those applying for leadership funds).
– Proposed projects MUST have a tangible impact for women and girls in computer science and/or STEM- related fields.

PROJECTS
Preference will be given to projects that target under-served populations and locations, take a collaborative approach, have a high potential for growth and present an innovative use of technology.

Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years of age. Aidan Sullivan, then picture editor, and Ian’s friends and family created the Ian Parry Scholarship in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.

Each year, there is an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24.

Tony Elumelu Foundation Welcomes 1000 Pan-African Entrepreneurs to $100M Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme Boot Camp

I am confident that these entrepreneurs are Africa’s hope for the future,’ Mr. Tony Elumelu says, about the 1000 African entrepreneurs who will be arriving in Nigeria on July 10^th, 2015 for a two-day boot camp.

A thousand entrepreneurs selected from over 20,000 applicants from all over Africa are expected to converge in Nigeria for a two-day boot camp session. This will be the maiden boot camp of thec, a $100m Pan-African entrepreneurship initiative. The event will take place from July 10 -12, 2015 in Ota, Nigeria.

In what is billed to be the largest ever gathering of emerging entrepreneurs on the continent, the boot camp – which is a major milestone of the flagship programme of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) – will see an interaction between established entrepreneurs from different sectors of industry, and the 1000 selectees of TEEP.

Mr. Elumelu who has been vocal about entrepreneurship-led development and the push for a private sector-driven turnaround of Africa says,

“In empowering these emerging entrepreneurs, we are providing the capital, the networks, the training and support for them to drive economic and social transformation throughout Africa, providing solutions to its problems as well as securing their future and that of generations to come.”

In the build-up to the boot camp, the Tony Elumelu Foundation has engaged the emerging entrepreneurs in a 12-week online training programme that culminates in this thrilling two-day session. The boot camp format will be predominately plenary style sessions from speakers with proven track record in business and leadership. The entrepreneurs will participate in sessions including an open mic with Founder Tony O. Elumelu CON and other captains of industry.

Speaking on the ideals of the programme and the need for the training, Parminder Vir, CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation says,

The Governments of Kenya and the United States are pleased to announce the availability of media accreditation applications for the 2015 GES to be held July 24-26, 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Launched by President Obama in 2009, GES brings together entrepreneurs and investors from across Africa and around the world annually to showcase innovative projects, exchange new ideas, and help spur economic opportunity.

The 2015 GES agenda will focus on generating new investments for entrepreneurs, with a particular focus on women and youth.

The selection of Nairobi as host city for the 2015 GES underscores how Africa — notably Kenya — has become a center for innovation and entrepreneurship. Kenya is a world leader in mobile money systems, like m-pesa, and a driver of innovation through technology research and incubation labs like “iHub.”

Since 2009, GES has emerged as a global platform connecting emerging entrepreneurs with leaders from business, international organizations, and governments looking to support them. This is the first time GES will take place in sub-Saharan Africa.

2015 Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival for Film Makers around the World

The Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival will be held Nov. 26 to 29, 2015 in Doha, Qatar.

Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival was established in 2005, and it is an international event by all standards. Since its first edition, it has become a meeting point for filmmakers and innovators worldwide.

The festival showcases a wide range of documentary films that discuss humanitarian, social, economic, and political issues. This is on top of the support it dedicates to young talents that work hard to have a space for expression and production.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to all TV channels (Arab and non-Arab), production companies, independent filmmakers and cultural, social and media organizations.

Three Competitions

The festival holds three competitions: a major one dedicated for TV channels; production firms; cultural, social, and media institutions; and independent producers.
It comprises three categories: short films, medium films, and long films.
This is in addition to the New Horizon competition that is dedicated to amateur and beginner directors and school pupils.
Awards are given to each category, and directors and winners are awarded too. The first edition included participants from Arab countries only.

Participation
• Productions taking part in the Festival competitions are limited to documentary films.
• Films produced only within two years prior to the current festival will be accepted.

• A participant may participate in each of the following categories:
1. Short (up to 30 min.)
2. Medium (31 to 59 min.)
3. Long (more than 60 min.)
• Participating films should either be in Arabic or English. If in Arabic, the films should be subtitled into English. Yet, if in another language, they should be translated, dubbed, or subtitled into English. Also, it is preferable to send the film script if available.

• Participants should send 2 DVD (PAL) copies of the documentary operating on a DVD player.

Aljazeera Awards:

• Aljazeera Golden Award

It is offered to each winning film from each of the three categories: Long, Medium, and Short. Each winning film will be granted a cash prize, to be equally shared by the film’s director and producer, as follows:

Long : QR 50,000 (Fifty thousand Qatari Riyals)
Medium : QR 40,000 (Forty thousand Qatari Riyals)
Short : QR 30,000 (Thirty thousand Qatari Riyals)

• The Jury Award

It is offered to each winning film from each of the three categories: Long, Medium and short.
Each winning film will be granted a cash prize, to be equally shared by the film director and producer, as follows:

Long : QR 25,000 (Twenty five thousand Qatari riyals)
Medium: QR 20,000 (Twenty thousand Qatari riyals)
Short : QR 15,000 (Fifteen thousand Qatari riyals)

None of the awards will be shared between two films in any category. In addition, the Award and Certificate of Recognition will not be applicable to films that have already won awards; this also applies to the Certificate of Excellence.

• Best Director Award
It is offered to

the best director in each of the following categories:

Long : QR 25,000 (Twenty five thousand Qatari riyals)
Medium: QR 20,000 (Twenty thousand Qatari riyals)
Short : QR 15,000 (Fifteen thousand Qatari riyals)

• Best Camerawork Award
It is offered to the best camerawork in each of the following categories:

Long : QR 20,000 (Twenty thousand Qatari riyals)
Medium: QR 15,000 (Fifteenthousand Qatari riyals)
Short : QR 10,000 (Ten thousand Qatari riyals)

• New Horizon Award

Two awards will be offered to the best two films directed by students or beginners as follows:

The Millennium Campus Conference is an annual symposium for university student leaders advancing global development to meet, partner, learn, and connect with a global community. Apply to become a Youth Delegate to the United Nations – 2015 UN Youth Delegate Programme

Whether your country has an existing Youth Delegate Programme or you will have to convince your government on the importance of having a youth representative in its delegation to the UN General Assembly, advocate and apply to participate in decision-making of the United Nations.

Participation in decision-making is one of the key priority areas of the United Nations agenda on youth. One form of youth participation at the United Nations is through the inclusion of youth delegates in a country’s official delegation to the United Nations General Assembly and various functional Commissions of the Economic and Social Council.

The youth delegate programme is coordinated by the Focal Point on Youth at the global level, but it is the responsibility of the Member States to establish a youth delegate programme at the national level, and to decide who will represent the young people of their country.

The roles of a youth representative varies from country to country, but normally includes providing input to their delegation on issues related to youth and participate in their delegation’s general work through attending meetings and informal negotiations.

The United Nations Youth Delegate Programme:

Programme aims to:

• Enhance awareness of the global situation of youth and to increase recognition of their rights and aspirations;

• Promote national youth policies, programmes and coordinating mechanisms as integral parts of social

and economic development, in cooperation with both governmental and non-governmental organizations;

• Strengthen the participation of youth in decision-making processes at all levels in order to increase

their contribution to national development and international cooperation;

• Facilitate the coordination of the UN system’s youth-related activities by leading the Inter-Agency

Network on Youth Development.

If your country does not have a programme in place to select a youth delegate, your task will be two-fold:

First, you have to convince your country on the importance of having a youth representative in its delegation to the UN General Assembly.
And secondly, once they’ve established the position, you will have to initiate a selection process.

Benefits

Youth delegates can participate in several intergovernmental meetings at the United Nations.
Most official youth delegates participate in the General Assembly, but some also attend functional Commissions of the Economic and Social Council.

The International Reporting Project (IRP) is pleased to announce a group reporting trip focusing on health and development issues in Ecuador on October 18-29, 2015.

Ecuador, a country of nearly 16 million, has made major strides in healthcare and development, including dramatic improvements in healthcare efficiency.

Yet many challenges remain. There are discrepancies between the quality of care and resources available at public and private facilities. Residents of rural areas may not receive the resources available in urban centers, and neglected tropical diseases persist.

Fellows on the twelve-day reporting trip will examine a range of issues related to health and development in Ecuador.

Eligibility:

The Ecuador trip is open to innovative journalists, bloggers, influential social media practitioners, and other media professionals. Unfortunately, this trip is not open to students.
Priority will be given to applications from citizens or residents of Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States

Benefits:

The IRP will purchase the fellows’ roundtrip air tickets to Ecuador and will pay for visas, hotel costs, local transportation and several meals.
Fellows who wish to extend their stay after the fellowship will have the option to arrange that at their own expense.
All fellows on the Ecuador trip are required to participate in the sessions arranged for the group program.
Much of the value of a group reporting trip comes from both meetings that IRP arranges and the interactions the fellows have with each other. Some independent reporting time will be included in the schedule.

How to Apply

All candidates must complete an application form and provide a detailed essay of at least 800 words describing the types of stories they might pursue.
Participants will be expected to post frequent stories – such as articles, blog posts, infographics, interactive stories, slideshows, social media posts, video and audio clips – before, during and after the trip.

Call for Proposals: 2015 Bloomberg Initiative To Reduce Tobacco Use Grants Program

The Bloomberg Initiative (BI) Grants Program was started in 2006 to support projects that develop and deliver high-impact, evidence-based tobacco control interventions.

The BI Grants Program provides funding to government ministries and agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations, and universities in more than 60 countries.

The Bloomberg Initiative Global Initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries was launched in 2006 with funds from Michael R. Bloomberg. A competitively awarded grants program is an important part of the Initiative. The grants program supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact evidence-based tobacco control interventions.

The grants program is managed by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Tobacco kills more than 14,000 people every day. Unless urgent action is taken, tobacco will kill 8 million people a year by 2030, 80 percent of them in developing countries.

To address this global public health crisis, Michael R. Bloomberg, philanthropist and mayor of New York City, launched a global initiative to fight tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries, where more than two-thirds of the world’s smokers live.

Requirements:

While applications are welcome from all low- and middle-income countries (as categorized by the World Bank), the Initiative places a priority on countries with the greatest number of tobacco users.
Approximately two-thirds of the world’s tobacco users live in fourteen countries: China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Ukraine, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Who can apply for a grant?

Governmental and non-governmental organizations based in eligible countries can apply for grants.

Governmental organizations include, but are not limited to, national Ministries, state/provincial authorities and affiliate offices.
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with relevant advocacy experience aimed at changing or implementing policies including but not limited to civil society organizations and educational institutions.
Applicants must be recognized legal entities capable of entering into contractual arrangements, receiving foreign funds and assuming legal and financial obligations.
NGO applicants cannot be the recipients of financial support from any tobacco product manufacturer or the parent, subsidiary or affiliate of a tobacco product manufacturer.

Funded Projects:

Proposals must focus on achieving policy change that will lead to substantial reductions in tobacco use.
The grants program gives priority to projects that lead to sustainable improvements in tobacco control laws, regulations, policies and programs at the national or sub-national level

Funding:

Proposals can be submitted for grants from US$50,000 up to a maximum amount of US$500,000. Short-term, one-year or two-year project proposals will be considered.

Applicants should first submit a short “Project Idea” using the online system at: www.tobaccocontrolgrants.org.
Applicants may submit more than one Project Idea.
Duplicate proposals will be deemed ineligible.

ITU and UN Women are pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2015 GEM TECH Awards.

2015 is an important year for the global community. We are celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action [link] and for this year’s awards, will look to efforts that have used ICTs to realize progress in its implementation. In 2015, we are also putting in place a new global framework on sustainable development for the next 15 years.

Gender equality and women’s empowerment is a central goal and ICTs have been recognized as a key means of implementation.

The GEM TECH awards can play an important role in highlighting what works and where initiatives can be scaled and further investments made. Moreover, they showcase the tremendous talent and determination of women to ensure that technology and its application are relevant and responsive to their needs.

Categories:

Application of Technology for Women’s Empowerment: Recognizing applications of technology across all sectors, and particularly the pillars of the Beijing Platform for Action, for the empowerment of women and to achieve gender equality
Women in the Technology Sector: Recognizing success in the promotion of girls and women as creators, drivers, leaders and decision-makers in the technology sector
Gender-Responsive Technology Governance, Policy and Access: Recognizing efforts to bridge the gender digital divide through strategies, policies and regulations that ensure enabling and foundational factors such as access, connectivity, security, digital literacy and citizenship.

Eligible Stakeholders:

Please nominate yourself or others – individuals, civil society, public sector, UN system and international organizations, private sector – who have done exceptional work in the area.

Nomination:

ITU and UN Women encourage men and women working in the ICT sector to nominate their colleagues – or themselves – with the final three winners to be selected by a committee of experts from ITU, UN Women, and 2014 GEM-Tech winners.

This grant provides support for ecologists in Africa to carry out innovative ecological research. The BES recognises that ecologists in Africa face unique challenges in carrying out ecological research and this grant is designed to provide them with support to develop their skills, experience and knowledge base as well as making connections with ecologists in the developed world.

Eligibility and Conditions

Applicants must:

be a scientist and a citizen of a country in Africa or its associated islands,
that is a ‘low-income economy’ or ‘lower-middle-income economy’ according to the

World Bank categorization
have at least an MSc or equivalent degree
be working for a university or research institution in Africa (including field centres, NGOs, museums etc.) that provides basic research facilities
carry out the research in a country in Africa or its associated islands

The proposed work must be completed within 18 months

Benefits:

The maximum value of a grant is £8,000 for research. An additional sum up to £2,000 may be requested to fund travel to help grantees develop connections with other ecologists outside their usual peer group.
Travel funds are available for the applicant to spend time working with ecologists in developed countries where facilities and experience will help the grantee on return to their own institution.

How to Apply:

Applications will only be assessed once the online referee statement of support has been received from the applicant’s institution, and if applying for travel funds, from the overseas host institution.
This referee statement should include why the project is important, what support will be given to the applicant and a statement that any equipment bought for the project will be made available for anyone in the host institution to conduct ecological research.

Applications for this grant must be made using the BES online application form.

IMPORTANT: Only complete questions 3, 3a and 3b if you are requesting additional travel funds (see above).

The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program is a scholarly community where individuals pursue advanced work across a wide range of academic disciplines, professions, and creative arts. Radcliffe Institute fellowships are designed to support scholars, scientists, artists, and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishment who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields and in the creative arts.

The Radcliffe Institute encourages applications in all disciplines and on any topic In recognition of Radcliffe’s historic contributions to the education of women and to the study of issues related to women, the Radcliffe Institute sustains a continuing commitment to the study of women, gender, and society. If so directed, Radcliffe will pay the stipend to the fellow’s home institution. Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year, which extends from early September 2016 through May 31, 2017.
Visual artists and film and video artists may apply to come for either one or two semesters.
In the event that they come for one semester, the stipend is $37,500.
