2018/2019 Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung MENA Leadership Academy II for young adults from the MENA region (Funded study trip to Germany)

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is launching the second round of a regional training program, designed for young adults from the Middle East and North Africa region.

The overall objective of the training program is to enhance the knowledge of a professional methodology for civic activism; strengthen the understanding of and the capacity for democratic participation of civil society; increase the CSO contribution to economic and social development processes as well as their role as mediator between citizens and state in terms of articulating interests and defending citizens’ rights. Moreover, the program aims at motivating young people to participate in the civic life and local development of their respective countries.

25 selected participants from seven countries will follow a unique program cycle throughout 2018 and 2019 comprising a series of four trainings to strengthen organizational and functional capabilities of CSOs. The program will furthermore focus on individual skill trainings such as communications and negotiation workshops. The training program will take place over a two-year period and the training series will be finalized with a study trip to Germany.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Citizen of the following MENA region countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon
  • Age: Between 20 and 30 years
  • Active in a civil society organization or any other form of civic engagement
  • Very good command of the English language
  • Available to contribute to the entire program cycle 2018-2019.

Training Components
The training program will take place over a two-year period and will consist of the following components:

  • First Training: Functions and Organization of Civil Society Organizations in Democratic Societies
    • 15-20 April 2018, Madrid/Spain
    • Duration: 5 days
    • Focus: Different aspects of CSOs roles and functions in the context of civic development in the MENA region. The participants will also be trained in strategic planning and project development.
  • Second Training: Strengthening Skills
    • October 2018,Tunis/Tunisia
    • Duration: 5 days
    • Focus: Communication, Negotiation, and Strategic Planning Skills
  • Third Training: Local Governance and Development
    • April 2019, tba/Spain
    • Duration: 5 days
    • Focus: Local politics and the role of civic participation/CSOs on the regional and local level.
  • Fourth Training: Civic Engagement in European Democracies
    • October 2019, Berlin/Germany
    • Duration: 7 days
    • Focus: Study trip to Germany during which the participants will learn about the organization of civil society and CSO activities in a European parliamentary democracy

MENA-Michigan Initiative for Global Action Through Entrepreneurship (M2GATE) Program 2018 for young people from MENA region

The MENA-Michigan Initiative for Global Action Through Entrepreneurship (M2GATE) invites you to join a new virtual exchange program with students from the United States, and fellow students from Morocco, Egypt and Libya. If you want to make a difference through social entrepreneurship and to make connections with peers in one of the most dynamic regions of the world, this opportunity if for you.

The Program is open to post-secondary (undergraduate) students aged 18-25 from: Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia (or refugees currently residing in one of these four countries), and The University of Michigan (USA) Ann Arbor or Dearborn campuses.

The goal of the MENA-Michigan Initiative for Global Action Through Entrepreneurship (M2GATE) program being implemented by WDI is to build marketable global competencies of MENA-and Michigan-based youth through project-based, cross-cultural learning and action.
The program will focus on the following global competencies: cross-cultural collaboration and communication; critical thinking and adopting diverse perspectives; and the ability to engage in
key civic and global issues.
In addition to these, students will also develop marketable skills and knowledge in the areas
of social entrepreneurship and STEM. This project-based program combines virtual training in
English and Arabic, and virtual and in-person mentoring and instructional support.
Eligibility Requirements:
  • This program is open to post-secondary (undergraduate) students aged 18-25 from Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia (or refugees currently residing in one of these four countries) or the University of Michigan (USA) Ann Arbor or Dearborn campuses.
  • M2GATE encourage applicants from a variety of disciplines – including Engineering, Business, Healthcare, and Liberal Arts – to apply.
  • M2GATE expect all U.S. students to be from the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses.The program will target 50% women, and will deliberately engage a diverse population including refugees and people with disabilities.

Timeline:

  • The program will run August 2017 – December 2018, and over that time will support three cohorts of 192 students (a total of 576), organized in 32 teams of six students each– four from MENA schools (from the same country though not necessarily the same school) and two from the University of Michigan.
  • The program will include 128 MENA-based students per cohort, with a total number of 384.
  • Each cohort will be eight weeks long:
  • Cohort 1: 26 January – 16 March, 2018
  • Cohort 2: 6 April – 8 June, 2018
  • Cohort 3: 25 May – 20 July, 2018

Expectations for Students
  • This program will require around 32 hours of a student’s time over the eight-week cohort.
  • This includes the orientation, the six curriculum modules, a debrief session, and time for virtual group work, including work on the final pitch video.
  • Each student will be expected to schedule virtual meetings with their teams.
  • Students in the MENA region will be expected to attend in- person sessions with their teammates at the schools above, to the extent possible.
  • Students who are admitted are expected to complete the program’s requirements.
  • There is no cost to participate.

Swedish Institute’s Young Leaders Visitors Programme (YLVP) 2018 for Young Leaders (Fully Funded to Sweden)

Are you a leader with a vision? Do you want to make a change? Young Leaders Visitors Programme (YLVP) is a leadership programme for people who want to work for positive change in society – and in themselves. If you are open-minded and want a real learning challenge, apply for a seat among the YLVP.

YLVP aims to support young leaders in the MENA-region and Sweden by giving them the tools and methods they need in their work for an equal and sustainable society. All participants are experts in their field, and learning will take place between participants and through external experts. YLVP is as much about personal as professional development. It is about growing as a person with renewed confidence and insights, and growing as a leader with new tools, methods and perspectives.

The programme is an intense training based on real experiences and collaborative learning. The contents of the programme will vary from year to year as it is the particular expertise and experience of the participants that will largely determine the topics dealt with. The following broader issues will however always be cenral: value-based leadership and group development; democracy and human rights for a more equal and sustainable society; networks and the digital world. Participants will learn by participating in interactive sessions with facilitators, exchanging experiences, doing practical exercises and finding common solutions to global and/or common challenges.

YLVP will give you:

  • New tools, methods and perspectives that is needed when working for an equal and sustainable society.
  • Greater understanding of the environment and issues on a local, regional and global level
  • Personal insights and self-awareness as a leader, a change-maker and a person
  • Meet and get to exchange ideas with other experts, inspire each other and share experiences on common challenges.
  • Hands-on training with digital tools, tactics and security
  • A strong and active alumni network that support each other in driving important changes in society

Requirements:

You can apply to YLVP if you:

  • Have a leading position in your work for social change (for example in your work as a civil servant, a youth politician, a legal worker, a journalist, a social worker, a social entrepreneur or a cultural worker).
  • Work in a collaborative setting, where you have a leadership role (formal or informal)
  • Are working actively for democracy, sustainability, diversity and/or human rights
  • Are between 22 and 32 years old
  • Have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English
  • Are a citizen of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine*, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia or Yemen.* Palestinian ID holders, including Jerusalem ID.

Programme timeline

YLVP is made up of four weeks divided into two modules at separate times. YLVP is an intensive programme with a full-day schedule and many evening activities, and all selected participants will have to commit to participating in all activities of both Module 1 and 2.

Module 1 (in Stockholm, Sweden, 23 April – 11 May, 2018)
During the first module, we will dive straight into the experience-based leadership training with a focus on personal and group development. A substantial amount of time will be dedicated to feedback, active listening and reflection, and together we will create a safe space for you to explore your approach to driving social change. You will be an active participant in several seminars and workshops that touch on topics that are important and relevant to you – such as diversity, human rights, transparency and tolerance. You will also take part in practical group assignments and project work throughout the module. You will get the opportunity to attend at least one study visit to a relevant Swedish organisation or institution..

Module 2 (location to be decided, 13–19 October, 2018)
Module 2 takes place a few months after the end of Module 1, after you’ve had time to start implementing the lessons from the first module into your work. The focus  will be to maintain, build and expand the network, to continue the learning journey and follow up the development of your work.

US-MEPI Student Leaders Program 2018 for Undergraduate Students from the Middle East and North Africa (Fully Funded to USA)

The U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) program seeks nominations for potential participants in the MEPI Student Leaders Program scheduled to take place in summer 2018. The program will last from June 25 – August 4, 2018.

The Student Leaders program is an intensive 5-week training program in four U.S.-based universities for about 60 undergraduate and graduate students (age 20-24) from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Students learn about leadership, civil society, and government processes and how they may apply these skills in their home countries. The program also offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate students from across the MENA region an intensive leadership training course. Students attend U.S. academic institutions where they develop leadership skills and expand their understanding of civil society and participatory governance and how both may be applied in their home communities.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students from the following countries are eligible to apply: Algeria, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and West Bank and Gaza.
  • This program is open to university students between the ages of 20 and 24.
  • MEPI seek a gender-balanced pool of candidates and give preference to traditionally under-served participants. While nominees may be undergraduate or graduate students in any field of academic specialization, it is critical that they exhibit a serious interest in pursuing leadership opportunities in their home countries and demonstrate a desire to deepen their civic engagement.
  • Those who have previously traveled to the U.S. or studied abroad are ineligible. Applicants should demonstrate sufficient English-language skills to participate in U.S. university-level classes and must be enrolled in and attending a university in their home countries. At the time of application and while participating in the program, participants cannot hold U.S. citizenship or be a U.S. Legal Permanent Resident.

Benefits:

  • Participants have the opportunity to meet their American peers, engage in local community service activities, and observe and take part in the governmental process on the local, state, and federal levels. The program includes academic coursework, as well as study tours to various regions of the United States.
  • Expenses for the U.S. program are fully paid by the U.S. Department of State.
  • Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.) will serve as the prime implementer in consortium with Montana State University, the University of Delaware, and Portland State University.
  • Each host university will design its own course materials, schedule, and program activities. All academic programs will address common themes including: a comparative analysis of leadership styles; consensus-building, conflict resolution, individual and collective problem-solving, and group dynamics; the role of civil society; public speaking; and job-seeking skills. The program will include coursework/trainings as well as field visits to complement and reinforce the concepts explored in the trainings.
  • Students will live amongst their peers and interact with Americans in local communities.
  • It is anticipated that participants will arrive and depart through Washington, D.C. in order to participate in the welcome and farewell ceremonies and informational briefings and debriefings at the Department of State. Due to the rigorous academic and program schedule, travel to visit family or friends elsewhere in the United States will not be permitted before, during (including on weekends during the academic residency period), or after the program. Students must immediately return home upon conclusion of the program. All participants are expected to travel unaccompanied.

  • The recruitment process for the 2018 program is now open.

  8. Candidate’s response, in 500 words or less, to each of the following questions:
  • The Student Leaders program offers outstanding students leadership training to expand their understanding of and potential contribution to‎ civic and economic engagements. How are you a leader? True leaders constantly evolve. Provide us with 1-3 concrete examples of how you built and strengthened your advocacy capacity and skills in dealing with a challenge. Did you use your leadership skills to cope with a problem, enact change, or help and inspire others? What did you learn from this experience? How has your leadership style improved as a result? What was the impact of this change on you and the people around you?
  • Tell us about a public figure whose moral convictions you most aspire to emulate. Which key characteristics of that person do you see within yourself, and in which ways are you dissimilar? Discuss how these characteristics sometimes prove to be negative. Be creative: this person can be from any era. We strongly encourage that you select someone the selection committee would recognize by avoiding relatives or teachers.
  • Imagine that you win a $50,000 grant to engage in an activity within your reach. The project must be concrete and be done within one year and benefit your community (cannot include bringing peace to your country or solving world hunger). The endeavor you choose should promote self-growth as a leader and significantly impact your community. Please provide details of how you would spend your year, why are you motivated to do this, and what are the benefits that this endeavor would bring to yourself and to your community.

African Development Bank (AfDB) Tamayoz – Libya Leading the Way” Leadership Programme 2018 for Libyans

Tamayoz – Libya leading the way project is an initiative lead by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Libyan government to support the political transition in Libya by strengthening the leadership capacity of its public, private and civil society sectors in order to lead the way to long-term institutional effectiveness, efficiency and prosperity.

After extensive research, a comprehensive training programme was designed to meet the objectives previously set by the stakeholders and satisfy the needs of the participants while taking into account the political situation, cultural sensitivities and the existing infrastructure available to support the delivery of the programme.

A new batch of Tamayoz applications will be accepted until November 9th 2017.The program dates are as follows:

  • Foundations Leadership course (E-learning) November 12th 2017 to December 9th 2017
  • Sector Specific Leadership course (E-learning) December 10th 2017 to December 23rd 2017
  • Leadership training in Libya (face-to-face): December 12th 2017 – February 3rd 2018 (each participant will attend one week only over this period)
  • Leadership Course in Tunisia (face-to-face) April 8th, 2018 to April 15th, 2018.

TAMAYOZ was designed to be conducted over a period of 14 weeks divided into three different stages for an effective and efficient learning process. The first and second stages of the programme will be based on e-learning modules where the first stage cover the leadership basics while the second stage is more concerned with sector-specific training needs. E-learning modules will be taught through a dedicated platform and participants will be engaged with reading material, short videos, webinars, and discussion forums among others.

The third and final stage is designed as an intensive training for a number of participants in Tunisia and  Libya ,and  it will include interactive workshops in addition to international guest speakers who will deliver inspirational speeches to give examples from around the world to show how leadership skills play a pivotal role in the transition period of different countries.

Requirements:

All nominees for the Leadership Programme are expected to be high performing individuals who have already demonstrated leadership capability in their current positions.
The following are the general selection criteria for participants:

  • Have worked for a minimum of 3 years in their current workplace, or a related organisation, to ensure that applicants have sufficient knowledge of organisational needs and challenges within their sector;
  • A university degree is a distinct advantage. Applicants lacking a university degree will be
    considered if they can demonstrate a track record of 7 years relevant work experience;
  • Priority will be given to participants aged between 25 and 45 years old. Applicants outside this age bracket must demonstrate exceptional leadership skills to be considered in the programme. Exceptional leadership skills will be distinguished by the total score awarded in the evaluation of their application;
  • Female participants are highly encouraged to apply from all three sectors, the programme will work to ensure the inclusion of a minimum of 10% female participation;
  • Good command of MS office and internet browsers in order to complete e-learning packages;
  • To successfully submit the application, the applicant must commit to attending and
    participating in the entire programme: to fulfill the required course assignments (e-learning,
    written assignments etc.), face-to-face trainings, and a willingness to work in teams. If some
    instances, the applicant may be required to submit approval from their workplace to confirm
    their availability to participate in this programme;
  • Basic English language skills are a requirement for participation in this course. While most
    sessions will be conducted in Arabic, interaction with international non-Arabic speaking
    experts will have significant added value for course participants;
  • Course participants should be as reflective of the Libyan population as possible, therefore, the geographical origins of applicants will be considered in assessing the final composition of
    course participants;
  • Applicants who can demonstrate commitment to the political transition, Libya’s stability and
    development, and improved service delivery to the Libyan people will be preferred;

Nominees:

Nominees will have to provide examples in their application form/process on how and when they have demonstrated their leadership, communication, and analytical skills. These skills can be detailed through their educational experience, workplace activities, and community engagement. Applicants will also submit a short video outlining their commitment to the future development of Libya, which will also be used to evaluate their presentation and communication skills. In their applications, applicants must highlight the following:

  • Good oral and written communication skills in Arabic;
  • Demonstrated desire and commitment to self-development;
  • Demonstrated desire and commitment to the development of Libya;
  • Proven leadership ability (influence, motivate and support teams);
  • Justifications as to why he/she would like to join the program, and why the applicant believes he/she should be selected.

Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme 2018/2019 for study in Ireland (Fully Funded)

The Fellowship Training Programme was Irish Aid’s first scholarship programme, begun in 1974. Since that time, it has brought suitably qualified candidates from developing countries to undertake Masters degrees at universities and colleges in Ireland, with further students supported for similar courses in their own region.

Awards are made in fields such as development studies, rural development, health care, education and law with the aim of supporting and enhancing the contribution recipients can make to Irish Aid’s partner organisations. Fellowship eligibility requirements aim to ensure close alignment with Irish Aid’s programmatic approach.

Eligible Courses:

Relevant Masters programmes in Ireland and regionally.  A directory listing suitable courses for study in Ireland is available to applicants, covering programmes in up to 12 subject areas.

Before finalising your course choices and submitting your application, please confirm with the relevant Irish Embassy that they remain fully satisfied that the courses you have chosen from the Irish Aid Directory of Eligible Postgraduate Courses accord with the Embassy’s country priorities. Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must

  • be a citizen of one of Irish Aid’s partner countries (i.e. Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia), or of Cambodia, Kenya, Liberia, Palestine, Myanmar, Rwanda or Zimbabwe.
  • be resident in that country.
  • have achieved the necessary academic standard to be accepted onto a Master’s degree course in a higher education institution in Ireland or within their own region.
  • be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the development of their home country.
  • have identified relevant college courses in a higher education institution in Ireland or within their own region. For study in Ireland, you must select courses from the Irish Aid Directory of Eligible Postgraduate Courses
  • be applying to commence a new qualification and not be seeking funding for a course they have already commenced or which will begin before fellowship awards have been notified.
  • be able to take up the fellowship in the academic year 2018/2019.
  • provide a letter of reference from their employer and a completed Employer Endorsement Form.

For study in Ireland, applicants must also

  • be able to demonstrate skills in academic English by achieving an appropriate score on a recognised test (IELTS 6.5)
  • contact the Irish Embassy to confirm that the courses they have chosen from the Directory of Postgraduate Courses accord with the Embassy’s priorities in their country (see contact information below).

Benefits:

  • The scholarship award covers course fees, required flights, accommodation (for out of country study), monthly allowances, insurance and other incidental expenses.
  • Eligible Masters programmes in Ireland commence in the period August to September each year and, depending on the course, scholarships will run for between 10 and 16 months.

Chevening OCIS Fellowship Program 2018/2019 for Mid-Career Professionals (Fully Funded for Study in the UK)

The Chevening programme grants awards to outstanding individuals with leadership potential from around the world. A Chevening OCIS Fellowship Award offers financial support to individuals who are dedicated to the promotion of academic activities which encourage a more informed understanding of the culture and civilisation of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies to undertake independent study and research at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

The fellowship starts in October 2018 for a six-month period of independent, self-driven research at OCIS. Fellows will need to develop their own research-project to focus on during their fellowship prior to arriving in the UK.

To be eligible for a Chevening OCIS Fellowship, you must:

As a Lazord Fellow, you would be joining a multi-dimensional program that seeks to empower its fellows to develop a critical understanding of civic engagement, and improve their leadership and technical skills for their future careers, regardless of the sector. The program achieves its mission through offering mentoring, providing job opportunities in organizations striving to advance the common good, and creating enriched educational opportunities.

The Lazord fellowship has been running since 2010, when it began in Egypt. It currently has chapters in Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia, working with over 50 organizations. The fellowship is a year-long regional program that includes a chance for the chapters and fellows in Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia to meet all together twice a year. After a competitive recruitment effort, fellows are selected in each of the 3 countries and placed for one year in a local organization. The fellows receive trainings provided by the local Lazord representative as well as mentorship to help them realize their full potential as responsible leaders.

The Lazord Foundation is pleased to announce that for the first time are including applicants that meet the criteria below coming from: Syria, Yemen, Palestine, Iraq, Sudan,Libya.

Eligibility criteria:

  • For public universities graduates: Open to all graduates from any branch;
  • For private university graduates: need-based scholarship granted for at least 2 years;
  • Having graduated in 2015 or after;
  • Proven record of being civically engaged;
  • Ready to commit to a one year full-time fellowship starting September 2017;
  • Be available to attend the annual regional retreat in Jordan from September 16th to September 22nd;

Fellows will:

  • be hosted for 1 year in a local non-profit organization as a full-time employee;
  • receive a living stipend (based on the country) and a modest housing stipend (based on the fellow’s placement and needs);
  • be offered a minimum of 10 training sessions by influential civil society leaders and professional trainers on an array of topics surrounding civil society, entrepreneurship management, leadership, team building, business skills and much more;
  • receive monthly mentoring sessions with professionals mentors with civil society experience;
  • have networking opportunities with professionals and influential individuals from all sectors – both local and international;
  • males applying from Egypt have to either be exempted from military service, already received the certificate of exemption or be done with their service;
  • attend the annual opening and closing retreats with the regional cohort of fellows from all 3 countries.

The UN Young Professionals Programme (YPP) is a recruitment initiative for talented, highly qualified professionals to start a career as an international civil servant with the United Nations Secretariat. It consists of an entrance examination and professional development programmes once successful candidates start their career with the UN.

Requirements:

The YPP examination is held once a year and is open to nationals of countries participating in the annual recruitment exercise. The list of participating countries is published annually and varies from year to year.

  1. Convocation Status
    Every year the YPP attracts up to 50,000 applications. After the screening of applications, the most qualified applicants per country are convoked to sit the exam in their respective exam subjects. You may check the status of your application by typing your application number into the search window below. The status search window will be regularly updated to notify candidates of their convocation status as soon as their status has been determined. All candidates will be informed through Important Updates on https://careers.un.org/ypp once the screening process finishes.

Recruitment process

Placement on the roster

Successful candidates will be placed on their respective rosters in July and will remain on the roster for the duration of two years. After two years the roster closes. Those not placed within these two years will no longer be considered for posts and will have to re-take the YPP examination if they wish to be reconsidered.

Type of contract offered

Candidates who are selected from the reserve list will be offered a two-year fixed term contract at the start of their Professional career with the Secretariat. After two years and subject to satisfactory performance, they may be granted a continuing contract.

Level of first placement

Your placement level can only be at a P-1 or P-2 level. Successful candidates holding a bachelor’s degree and no work experience will be offered placement at the P-1 level. Successful candidates holding a bachelor’s degree and two years of work experience, or a master’s degree and no work experience, will be offered placement at the P-2 level. You are expected to serve for a minimum of two years in that position before being considered for appointment to another position.

Step 4: Application evaluation

Your application will be screened to determine if you are eligible for the examination in the exam subject you applied for. If more than 40 applicants from the same country apply for the same exam area, those applicants will be further screened and ranked by a Human Resources Officer according to points given for the following additional qualifications: highest level of education completed, knowledge of official UN languages, and relevant work experience. Please be aware that many potential applicants do not pass the screening stage due to incomplete or inaccurate applications.

The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP) is publishing an open call for applications to the non-resident fellowship program. TIMEP non-resident fellows contribute to TIMEP’s mission to inform international policymakers and influence global policy discussions on developments happening in the Middle East and North Africa.

The call seeks applicant proposals for non-resident fellows, who will contribute to TIMEP’s mission through development of research, analysis, and policy advisement in coordination with the TIMEP team. Potential fellows should be mid-career professionals with demonstrated expertise and commitment to TIMEP’s mission and principles.

TIMEP’s mission places great importance on the value of bringing local perspectives to policy discussions; thus, preference will be given to those living or working in the region.

Applications will be considered for proposed work in Libya, Syria, Iraq, and Egypt, as well as regional, transnational, and comparative studies. TIMEP is particularly interested in applicants with expertise in the fields of:

  • Economy and Development
  • Security Sector Reform
  • Digital Security
  • Social and Labor Movements
  • Gender and Sexuality
  • Development and Good Governance

The fellowship term will consist of a period of six months, with review of the terms of agreement at the conclusion of the six-month period. The position is a non-resident position, with preference for a fellow with local presence in the region; TIMEP will facilitate a one-week site visit to TIMEP’s Washington, DC, offices (outlined below). The fellow will receive a stipend commensurate with experience.

Potential Duties and Obligations

  1. Contribute analysis articles (around 1,000 words), on mutually agreed topics, for publication on the TIMEP website over the course of the term of the agreement.
  2. Be available to consult with TIMEP team on developments regarding area of focus, to keep them apprised and to offer assessment of the developments.
  3. ​Participate in monthly phone conferences with relevant TIMEP staff.
  4. Advise on the strategic direction of TIMEP’s research and advocacy initiatives, in coordination with TIMEP’s Research and Executive Directors and Advocacy and External Relations Manager.
  5. Provide written and oral review of TIMEP-drafted documents (no more than ten pages per month, including analysis pieces, primers, profiles, briefs, etc.).
  6. Facilitate meetings and site visits for TIMEP staff during research and advocacy trips.
  7. Conduct one visit to TIMEP’s Washington, DC, office over the course of the term of the agreement, to include events, advocacy meetings, and site visits, to be determined in coordination with the Advocacy and External Relations Manager.
  8. Indicate affiliation with TIMEP when doing interviews, speaking on panels, or publishing pieces in other news outlets.

Qualifications

  • At least five years of relevant work or academic experience in a field related to the proposed are of study.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, with preference given to those who have graduate research experience.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English, with working proficiency in Arabic.
  • Demonstrated commitment to TIMEP’s mission and principles.

Civil society Facility South Dialogue Fellows Programme 2017 for Young People from MENA Region (Fully Funded)

Young people have played a significant role in demanding basic rights for building their future towards sustainable processes.
The Fellowship programme invests in the mobilisation of youth as drivers of change and democracy: it aims at involving Youth into policy making and dialogue in the Southern Mediterranean region. It will support existing youth networks and Youth fellows, to share experience, monitor progress and provide mutual support.

This programme is targeting 30 young CSO representatives aged 24 – 36 years old willing to work at regional/international levels to promote youth role in policy making and dialogue. Participants will come from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine1, Tunisia and Syria.
For this 2017 programme, there will be a specific focus on: peace and partnerships (advocating for CS space; employment and social business), and preventing violent extremism.
3 workshops will take place in the region between April and October 2017.
There will be online coaching between the workshops by CS experts and with the Fellows of the 2016 programme, at local level. Activities in Brussels related to the Civil Society Forum – Neighbourhood South are also to be foreseen.

activities to be held mostly in the European Neighbourhood South and Brussels.
Implementation: This programme will be managed by the Civil Society Facility South (CSFS), based in Tunis on behalf of the European Union (DG NEAR), in close collaboration with partner CSOs from the region and EU Delegations.

Profile Requirements:

  • Proposed applicant has at least 3 years-experience being involved in sectorial projects, specifically in actions of advocacy and policy dialogue;
  • Good Command/ Proficiency in English or/and French language proficiency in addition to Arabic will be required.

Med Culture Training of trainers Programme 2017- Advocacy for culture (Fully Funded)

The Technical Assistance Unit of Med Culture, a Regional Programme funded by the European Union, is launching a call for participation in a regional training of trainers programme (ToT) which takes place on 21-24 April 2017, and will include workshops and distance mentoring. This initiative will focus on “Advocacy for Culture”, identified as the main theme of Med Culture programme for 2017. 

Following a number of activities developed by Med Culture, higher education and training in cultural management and policies, emerged as one of the main priorities in the region today. To tackle this issue, Med Culture is launching a call for participation in a Training of Trainers Programme.

This Training of Trainers Programme aims at understanding and exploring adult learning and providing the skills to design and deliver an educational programme (training/seminar/workshop) that’s appropriate to a chosen context. This initiative also aims at creating a particular community of practice in the region around teaching and learning in the cultural management and cultural policy field. The content described below is indicative and might be subject to amendments based on the participant’s needs/contribution, and on the spot developments.

Program Details:

A blended learning, Training of Trainers Programme addressing a combination of topics:

  • establishing the purpose of educational programmes (trainings/seminars/workshops) and their learning outcomes
  • understanding one’s own learning experiences and preferences and adapting to other ways of learning
  • learning as an on-going, lifelong process
  • facilitating a learning environment
  • monitoring and evaluating of educational programmes
  • developing advocacy initiatives as a form of learning process
  • integrating culture to address migration issues, radicalisation, artists’ freedom of expression, and youth employability

It will also include sessions about motivating and energizing people, effective group work, facilitation skills, and learning as a capacity to adapt and make the best use of changes.

This ToT programme includes

  • one main workshop (4 days excluding travel), taking place in Rabat in April 2017 (for 30 participants), addressing the main issues related to training of trainers – design and delivery
  • a second workshop (3 days), taking place in Tunis in July 2017 (open for 10 participants only, based on the projects elaborated by the participants in the interval after the first workshop.

30 people from South Mediterranean countries, aged between 25 and 45 years at the time of application.

  1. University teachers, interested in/teaching topics connected to the arts, to cultural management and cultural policies, as well as sustainable development
  2. Trainers/facilitator working in the field of the arts and culture, advocacy and sustainable development
  3. Junior and mid-career cultural practitioners who are interested in developing training skills in the above topics as part of their continuing career development (at least six places will be guaranteed for applicants under 30).

The selected candidates are expected to be fully committed to this programme, including participation at 1 or 2 workshop(s), preparation of homework based on a personal/organizational project, participation in distance mentoring to implement said project. Participants of previous activities organised by Med Culture are encouraged to apply to this call. At least 6 places will be kept for participants under 30.

Selection process

The selection jury is composed of experts including one member of Med Culture team.  The candidates are selected based on the submission of:

  • a CV (2 pages)
  • a motivation letter explaining their interest in joining this programme, the objective they plan to achieve or develop, and how this training will impact their organisation/local context (1 page)
  • an educational programme (training/seminar/workshop) to design and deliver, or a pitch for an advocacy project (1 page). Proposals addressing culture to deal with migration issues, fight against radicalisation, promote artists’ freedom of expression, foster youth employability and contribute to sustainable development are particularly welcome.

Selection criteria

Candidates should:

  • have a strong command of Arabic. Knowledge of French OR English is a requirement.
  • work in the academic or training field, in the cultural field, or in connected fields (sustainable development, tourism, social inclusion, employment, human rights, civil society empowerment etc.) within civil society/cultural organisations, the public sector, or as freelancers.
  • be available and commit to participate in the programme
  • be residents in one of the involved countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia. Candidates with Syrian or Libyan nationality who come from the civil society sector and who reside in their country or elsewhere are also eligible.
  • have some experience in designing and delivering a course or a training related to culture/the arts or related fields
  • and/or have some experience in organizing and facilitating/moderating educational programmes (seminars/workshops or other formats) dealing with culture/the arts or related fields
  • and/or show a strong interest/commitment in developing their training/facilitating/advocating skills
  • and show willingness to self-direct their own learning

Organising festivals, planning exhibitions, monitoring budgets and launching advertising campaigns: cultural managers shape the cultural scenes in the Arab region. While responsibilities have been expanding, practical experience alone is not always sufficient for success. Hence there is a strong demand for well-connected and adequately trained protagonists in the cultural scenes of the Arab region.
Therefore as part of the KULTURAKADEMIE Programme, the Goethe-Institut is offering a six-week cultural management training for members of non-state cultural institutions from the Arab region between April 24 and June 2 2017 for the seventh time since 2011. 15 participants will be trained in Germany in fields like

  • The theoretical seminar phase is an excellent opportunity for the participants to discuss their own project plans in-depth with experts from both theory and practice. Afterwards there is the opportunity to apply for a project development fund in order to implement the finalized project plan.

In partnership with Libyan authorities and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Transition fund, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will launch “Tamayoz – Libya Leading the Way” Leadership programme. Tamayoz – meaning distinction and uniqueness in Arabic – has been designed to strengthen leadership at the decision-making levels of the public sector, private sector, and civil society in Libya. The programme will offer trainings to current and future Libyan leaders, emphasising core leadership skills to improve collaboration between decision makers.

With a main objective to support a new generation of Libyan leaders to contribute to the process of stabilising and reconstructing the country, this programme is aligned with the priorities of the AfDB’s 2014-2016 country re-engagement note for Libya. It is also aligned with its High 5s development agenda on improving the living conditions of Africans, by building the capacity of Libya’s own leaders to manage the on-going transition.

The Leadership Training programme is targeting 250 participants from the three above-mentioned groups of Libyan society. Working in close coordination with key stakeholders, including the Libyan Ministry of Planning, responsible for overall project oversight, and the African Development Bank (AfDB), applicants will be evaluated against set selection criteria agreed by the aforementioned key stakeholders. The following selection criterion encompasses ASI experience, and lessons learned from the implementation of related leadership programmes in other contexts. To ensure that this criteria is relevant for, and applicable to the Libyan context, the views of key stakeholders have been incorporated.

Selection Criteria:

The following are the general selection criteria for participants:

  • Have worked for a minimum of 3 years in their current workplace, or a related organisation, to ensure that applicants have sufficient knowledge of organisational needs and challenges within their sector;
  • A university degree is a distinct advantage. Applicants lacking a university degree will be considered if they can demonstrate a track record of 7 years relevant work experience;
  • Priority will be given to participants aged between 25 and 45 years old. Applicants outside this age bracket must demonstrate exceptional leadership skills to be considered in the programme. Exceptional leadership skills will be distinguished by the total score awarded in the evaluation of their application
  • Female participants are highly encouraged to apply from all three sectors, the programme will work to ensure the inclusion of a minimum of 10% female participation;
  • Good command of MS office and internet browsers in order to complete e-learning packages
  • To successfully submit the application, the applicant must commit to attending and participating in the entire programme: to fulfill the required course assignments (e-learning, written assignments etc.), face-to-face trainings, and a willingness to work in teams. If some instances, the applicant may be required to submit approval from their workplace to confirm their availability to participate in this programme;
  • Basic English language skills are a requirement for participation in this course. While most sessions will be conducted in Arabic, interaction with international non-Arabic speaking experts will have significant added value for course participants;
  • Course participants should be as reflective of the Libyan population as possible, therefore, the geographical origins of applicants will be considered in assessing the final composition of course participants;
  • Applicants who can demonstrate commitment to the political transition, Libya’s stability and development, and improved service delivery to the Libyan people will be preferred;
  • Nominees will have to provide examples in their application form/process on how and when they have demonstrated their leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
  • These skills can be detailed through their educational experience, workplace activities, and community engagement. Applicants will also submit a short video outlining their commitment to the future development of Libya, which will also be used to evaluate their presentation and communication skills. In their applications, applicants must highlight the following:
  • Good oral and written communication skills in Arabic;
  • Demonstrated desire and commitment to self-development;
  • Demonstrated desire and commitment to the development of Libya;
  • Proven leadership ability (influence, motivate and support teams);
  • Justifications as to why he/she would like to join the program, and why the applicant believes he/she should be selected.

US-MEPI Student Leaders Program 2017 for Undergraduate Students from the Middle East and North Africa (Fully Funded to USA)

The Student Leaders program is an intensive, approximately 6-week exchange program to the United States for up to 120 undergraduate students from the Middle East and North Africa. Students are divided among U.S. academic institutions where they develop leadership skills and expand their understanding of civil society, as well as the democratic process and how both may be applied in their home communities.

The Student Leaders program is an intensive 6-week exchange program to the United States for approximately 120 undergraduate students from the Middle East and North Africa. The Student Leaders program has operated continually since 2003.

Students are divided among up to six U.S. academic institutions where they develop leadership skills and expand their understanding of civil society, as well as the democratic process and how both may be applied in their home communities. Participants have the opportunity to meet their American peers, engage in local community service activities, and observe and take part in the governmental process on the local, state, and federal levels.

The institutes include academic coursework, as well as study tours to various regions of the United States. Upon completion of the U.S.-based programs, host institutes work with participants to implement civic engagement programs in their home communities.

A follow-on training is generally held in the region approximately 6 months after the U.S. portion of the program.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students from the following countries are eligible to apply: Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, and West Bank/Gaza.
  • Ideal candidates for the MEPI Student Leaders Program:
    1. Are 20 to 24 years of age;
    2. Demonstrate strong English language skills needed to participate in a U.S. academic program;
    3. Are committed to returning to their home country/community following completion of the program;
    4. Exhibit strong leadership potential;
    5. Indicate a serious interest in learning about the United States;

Swedish Institute’s Young Leaders Visitors Programme (YLVP) 2017 for Young Leaders (Fully Funded to Sweden)

Young Leaders Visitors Programme (YLVP) is an intercultural leadership programme for young leaders from the Middle East, North Africa and Sweden.

The programme offers personal and professional development to leaders who work for positive social change in the fields of democracy, human rights, sustainability and equality. YLVP provides the tools necessary to accomplish greater social impact.

YLVP builds and strengthens individual leadership through group-centric methods such as collaboration, feedback and reflection. Participants will learn in group from merited facilitators and from each other, through workshops, practical exercises and hands-on performance.

Eligibility Requirements:

To apply to the Young Leaders Visitors Programme (YLVP) you have to:

  • be an NGO leader, legal worker, journalist, social worker, cultural worker, social entrepreneur, civil servant, youth politician or in another type of leadership role
  • work actively for democracy, sustainability, diversity and/or human rights
  • be between 22 and 32 years old (born 1985 – 1995)
  • have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English
  • be a citizen of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine*, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia or Yemen.

YLVP is made up of four weeks divided into two modules at separate times. Module one is three weeks long and always takes place in Sweden. Module two is one week long and takes place either in Sweden or in another location. The programme is in English.

In Sweden, 8–26 May, 2017

During the first module, we will dive straight into the experience-based leadership training with a focus on personal and group development. You will be an active participant in several seminars and workshops that touch on topics that are important and relevant to you and your ambitions – such as diversity, human rights, transparency, tolerance and other global challenges.

Module 2

14–20 October, 2017 (location to be decided)

The second and final module takes place a few months after the end of Module 1, after you’ve had time to start implementing the lessons from the first module into your work. It will take place in Sweden or in another location.

  • All costs related to accommodation, food and transport during YLVP are covered by SI. SI also arranges and pays for the participants’ air travel to and from Sweden and to the location of the second module of the programme.
  • Each participant is responsible for transportation costs within her/his own countries

Hivos Mideast Creatives Mobility Grant Program 2016 for Creatives from the MENA Region.

The Mideast Creatives program aims to support a more sustainable cultural and creative sector in the Southern Mediterranean region; to be achieved by means of providing support to coworking spaces and creative spaces in the creative industries.

In order to increase the knowledge exchange of creative hubs, Hivos Mideast Creatives is launching a Mobility grant scheme for creative hubs based in the Southern Mediterranean region.

The Mobility grant is set up to boost peer-to-peer work and collaboration as well as knowledge exchange possibilities for Southern Mediterranean based Creative hubs.

A Creative hub is a place which brings creative people together. It is a convenor, providing space and support to networking, business development and community engagement within the creative, cultural and tech sectors.

Grants

Mideast Creatives will provide a mobility grant to 10 Creative hub leaders to experience working in a different Creative hubs in the Southern Mediterranean region. There are also 5 mobility grants for Creative hubs leaders to experience working in a different Creative hub in one of the 28 EU member states, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Turkey, Norway and Iceland. The grants have a value of 2000 EUR.

Peers are encouraged to spend at least 5 full working days in the hosting Creative hub. There are no upper limitations on the amount of time peers want/can spend in a fellow Creative hub.

Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Scholarship Programme 2017 for Study in the Netherlands (Fully Funded)

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Scholarship Programme (or MSP) offers scholarships to professionals from ten countries. The scholarships can be used for short courses in the Netherlands. The programme is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Aim

The overall aim of the MSP is to contribute to the democratic transition in the participating countries. It also aims at building capacity within organisations by enabling employees to take part in short courses in various fields of study.

Scholarships are available for short courses with a duration between two and twelve weeks.

Eligibility Requirements:

The target group is professionals (with a maximum age of 45) who are nationals of and working in one of the following countries:

  • Algeria 
  • Egypt 
  • Iraq
  • Jordan
  • Lebanon
  • Libya 
  • Morocco 
  • Oman
  • Syria
  • Tunisia

While scholarships are awarded to individuals, the need for training must be demonstrated in the context of the organisation for which the applicant works. The training must help the organisation develop its capacity. This means that employers must nominate an applicant and motivate his or her application in a supporting letter.

To be eligible for an MSP scholarship you:

  • must be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries on the MSP country list valid at the time of application;
  • must have an employer’s statement that complies with the format EP-Nuffic has provided. All information must be provided and all commitments that are included in the format must be endorsed in the statement;

The Middle East & Northern Africa (MENA) Fellowship Program, supported by the British Council, provides access to ISPA’s extensive international network of arts professionals to early and mid-career leaders from the MENA performing arts community (Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Syria or Yemen).

Participants join the ISPA membership and attend the New York ISPA Congress where they engage in the development and exchange of ideas with leaders from some of the world’s most significant arts organizations, increase their industry knowledge and resources through educational opportunities, and share their experience with their communities.

Eligibility Criteria:

The MENA Fellowship Program seeks to engage leaders working in the management of all professional performing arts.

Applicants must:

  • Be performing arts management professionals from one of the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Syria or Yemen
  • Be currently employed/working in the performing arts
  • Have a minimum of five years professional experience in the arts
  • Not currently be a member of ISPA (nor have been one in the past three years) or associated with a current organizational ISPA member
  • Have the ability to attend and fully participate in the New York 2017 ISPA Congress (January 9 – 12, 2017)

There is no fee to submit an ISPA Fellowship application.

DGAP’s EU-Middle East Forum (EUMEF), in cooperation with the German Federal Foreign Office, the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa), the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, and the Rabat Social Studies Institute (RSSI), is welcoming applications for its upcoming capacity building workshop on

“Socio-Economic Challenges and Opportunities: What Does the Future Hold for Morocco and Tunisia?” (Scenario Planning and Strategic Policy Analysis).

EUMEF invites twenty young and mid-level experts and professionals from the MENA region and Europe, working in think tanks, research institutes, politics or civil society organizations, and whose work focuses on socio-economic developments in Morocco or Tunisia.

During the workshop, the participants will receive an introduction to scenario planning and strategic policy analysis. In two working groups, they will then develop their own scenarios for possible socio-economic developments in Morocco and Tunisia. Presentations by renowned experts will complement the scenario planning sessions. The workshop will be held in English.

Target Group:

  • The main protagonists and target group of the workshop are young and mid-level professionals (aged around 27-40) with at least two years of professional work experience in policy analysis or policy making in think tanks, academic research institutions, politics or civil society, with a focus on Morocco or Tunisia.
  • Participants should come from or currently reside in Morocco, Tunisia, other countries of the MENA region, or the EU.

Youth and the Mediterranean: Exploring New Approaches to Dialogue and Cooperation

Youth between the ages of 15 and 29 are the single largest and fastest expanding demographic group in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Their role in putting dominant societal norms to a test and fuelling new social, political and cultural processes can hardly be overestimated. Youth were among the primary instigators for the outbreak of the Arab uprisings, as well as the most active demographic group to have challenged authoritarianism both before and after 2010.

More than five years since the outbreak of the Arab uprisings, however, youth in the MENA still suffer from the highest unemployment rates in the world and the chronic lack of jobs and opportunities are widely considered a principal factor fuelling radical ideologies in the area. While many studies have focused on youth in the Arab world, it is increasingly rare to hear how young people themselves view and interpret current developments unfolding in their society and how these relate to the ongoing international debate on the future of the Mediterranean region.

In this context, the New-Med Research Network intends to give voice to youth themselves, providing a platform for 8 young professionals to present their ideas and contribute to the ongoing debates about conflict, security and radicalisation with a view to proposing new ideas and approaches to re-launch dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean region. Candidates should be under the age of 32, hold an internationally valid passport from, or permanent residency in, one of the countries of the MENA region, and should be preferably based at a university, NGO, or local media outlet.
By hearing directly from a select number of young scholars of Middle Eastern or North African descent, the New Med network aims to broaden debates and include diverse perspectives, thus forging new links between generations, sectors and geographies while providing an alternative to the often European-dominated debate about current security challenges in the Mediterranean region.

Requirements

  • Candidates who fit the above profile are invited to submit applications to write a policy paper, between 2,500-3,000 words in length (complete with footnotes and bibliography), in English and dealing with one of the themes outlined below.
  • Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Israel, Lebanon, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Tunisia. Applicants from Turkey are also eligible.

Successful candidates will be selected by the New-Med Steering Committee on the basis of their innovative research proposals, CV and cover letter. Final decisions will be made by the Steering Committee, which will pursue an adequate gender, age and nationality balance among the selected candidates. Successful candidates will be contacted directly by the end of October, 2016.

Benefits:

  • Selected authors will receive a remuneration of 300 euros for the policy paper upon its final submission and after approval by the New-Med Steering Committee.
  • Selected authors will also be invited to present their papers at a one-day international conference scheduled for January 2017 in Rome.
  • The New-Med network will cover travel costs, accommodation (two nights) and a ‘speed-dating’ welcoming reception followed by an informal networking dinner before the conference. This will allow participants to get to know each other and to engage in network building.
  • Following the conference, authors will be given the opportunity to revise and update their papers and these will be considered for publication as an IAI Research Paper within the framework of the New-Med Research Network.

If you, France, Israel, the US or the Arab world come from Central and Eastern Europe, then you can use the International Parliament Scholarship of Bundestag (IPS) Five months follow the procedures in the German Bundestag, which collaborate three in a Abgeordnetenbüro.

The German Bundestag awards with the Free University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin and the Technical University of Berlin annually about 120 scholarships for young graduates from 41 countries.

The program is under the auspices of the President of the Bundestag.

Selection Criteria:

  • The IPS is open to highly qualified, committed, open-minded and politically interested young men and women who have the will to shape the democratic future of their country and actively responsible.
  • The scholarship recipients are selected by an independent selection committee of the German Parliament with the participation of universities in Berlin due to technical, social, linguistic and intercultural competences.

Joining a deputy

As part of a full-time employment, the scholarship students are familiarized with the various tasks of a Member’s office. Here emphasis is placed on active participation: including to expert opinions elaborations, speech writing, articles and letters, the preparation of meetings and errands of secretarial duties. In addition, the scholarship students accompany their representatives to meetings of the Committees, groups and other bodies, and gain insight into the internal workings, relationships and procedures of Parliament. Also provided is a visit to the constituency of MPs.

Events at universities and political foundations

The scholarship recipients are enrolled in the summer semester as a student at the Humboldt University of Berlin and on request as by listeners on one of the other universities. You can visit during the summer semester up to two courses at the Humboldt University of Berlin or one of the other universities in Berlin. In addition, they participate in a scientific accompanying the Free University, the Humboldt University and the Technical University.

In addition, the fellows are introduced in studies seminars of political foundations in the political, economic and cultural life of Germany.

Scholarship Worth

  • The scholarship includes a monthly allowance of 500 euros, free accommodation and health, accident and liability insurance. Moreover, the cost of getting to and are taken to and from Berlin.
  • The International Parliament Scholarship is funded by the German Bundestag.

The Franco-German parliamentary scholarship begins on 1 October and ends on 31 July of each year. In the winter semester, the French scholars at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin are enrolled as students. Interested parties should address inquiries directly to the Humboldt University of Berlin.

The United Nations – The Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme
~ Human Resources Development and Advancement of the Legal Order of the World’s Oceans

The objective of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for advanced education and research in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science in support of management frameworks, to Government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing States, so that they may obtain the necessary knowledge to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in UNCLOS and related instruments.

Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows should have an advanced awareness and understanding of key issues and best international practices in ocean affairs and are expected to return to their home-countries to contribute their experience to assist with the effective implementation of UNCLOS and related instruments and programmes.

Programme Structure

The 9-month Fellowship Programme is composed of two consecutive phases which provide Fellows with advanced and customized research and training opportunities in their chose fields:

  • Phase One: 3-month Research and Training – normally undertaken at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • Phase Two: 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study – undertaken at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions and under the guidance of subject matter expert(s) who have recognized in-depth expertise in the Fellows’ chosen field of study.

Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates must:

  • Be Nominated by their Government, employer or competent organization;
  • Be between the ages of 25 and 40;
  • Possess a first university degree in a related discipline, and have a demonstrated ability to undertake independent advanced research and studies in an academic context;
  • Be mid-level professionals who can demonstrate the they work directly on ocean issues;
  • Be in a position to accept placement with host institutions for a period of no less that nine consecutive months;
  • Be in a position to obtain all relevant visas including transit visas.
  • The Programme is conducted in English and can accommodate Francophone fellows.

  • OIC special jury will then select 6 winners 2 weeks after the close of the competition using specific criteria and the winners will be announced on OIC website 3-4 weeks after the close of the competition.

How to enter the contest?

To enter the competition, simply upload a picture taken during the 1437 Ramadan fast depicting the Human Face of Ramadan. Including your name, age, location, date of the picture, tittle and a short caption. Only non-professional photographers with keen eye and creative mind are eligible to participate. Pictures entered for other competitions are not eligible. The competition closes on 30th Ramadan 1437.

Entries received after this date will not be considered. Competitors must also like or follow OIC Social Media Platforms.

How to submit my photos?

  • You can submit your photos on OIC website only and by filling the form below. For practical reasons, the upload process will not accept images greater than 7 MB.
  • Please ensure it is in JPEG format. OIC cannot be held responsible for problems associated with entry submission. Describe the view and location of the image so we can verify its authenticity and eligibility for the competition. (Languages: Arabic, English and French).

2016 SafirLab Program for Young People in Civil Society & Media From MENA Region.

Born in 2012, in the wake of the democratic uprisings that swept the Arab World, SafirLab is a program intended to support the civil society engaged in the issues of citizenship, local governance and the media.

Year after year, SafirLab offers assistance for about 20 project initiators (aged between 20 and 30 years) from the MENA region, committed to the issues of civil society and the media. This program provides them with a tools kit (training sessions on project management, pitching workshops, personalized mentoring, as well as professional meetings) aiming at developing and strengthening their initiatives in the long term.
Education, women’s rights, health, new media…The projects of the participants in SafirLab are distinguished by their ability to bring social changes to communities.
In 2016, SafirLab will bring together around 20 project holders in Paris, from October 26 till November 6. Three additional countries will be also joining this program in 2016: Algeria, Lebanon, and Palestinian territories.

Objectives of the Program

The objective of SafirLab is to create a sustainable dialogue with the youth, aged between 20 and 30 years, who are committed to the issues of citizenship, local governance and the media. Designed as a breeding ground for projects, it supports these young people in their journey to realize their professional or associative project by offering them mentoring and personalized tools and methods. SafirLab also strives to enable the emergence of a network based on common values and shared experience.

Social innovation, at the heart of SafirLab 2016

Since it fully matches the intrinsic values of the program, social innovation will be at the heart of this edition. Hence, the projects should include suggestions about social innovation and meet, fully or partly, the following criteria:

– Meeting a social or societal need
– Involvement of the relevant stakeholders
– Collective adoption of the values
– Strong links with the countries
– Innovation through the economic model

Participants

Project beneficiaries are young people aged between 20 and 30, from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Tunisia and Yemen. The 2016 edition of this program will bring together a maximum of 25 participants coming from these 9 countries.

The Creative Force programme supports projects which aim to strengthen democracy and freedom of expression in the target countries. This shall be achieved through collaborations between institutions and agents of change who work with either culture or the media to bring about change.

This year’s second (and final) call for applications – for seed funding only – is now open, with deadline 17 May 2016. The call is for projects which should be completed in time to submit final reports to the Swedish Institute by the deadline of 28 February 2017.

Creative Force Africa and Middle East & North Africa(MENA) supports collaborative projects with the overall objective to strengthen democratisation and freedom of expression in the target countries. These aims shall be achieved through mutual learning processes and sustainable networks between organisations and agents of change who work with either culture or the media to bring about change.

AFRICA: Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia
MENA: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen

Target Groups:

  • The primary target group for the Creative Force programme are agents of change and opinion-makers who, through culture or the media, work with creative processes to strengthen democratisation and human rights.
  • These can be organisations and groups of cultural actors and journalists, other actors within media organisations as well as human rights defenders and political activists, women’s rights groups, youth organisations or other relevant actors who work to increase democratisation and freedom of expression.
  • The final beneficiaries of Creative Force initiatives are groups and/or individuals who are directly positively influenced by the project outcomes, especially vulnerable groups in the programme countries and regions: women, children and youth as well as minority groups in especially vulnerable positions such as LGBTQ individuals or people with disabilities.

Acknowledging the necessity to strengthen civic engagement and participation in the MENA
-Region, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation is launching a regional training program, designed for young adults in the Middle East and North Africa Region.
The overall objective of the training program is to enhance knowledge of professional
methodology; strengthen the understanding of the role of civil society, and of the concept of participation; to increase the CSO contribution to economic and social development as well as its role as mediator between citizens and state in terms of articulating interests and
defending rights.
Equally, the program aims at motivating young people to participate in the civic life
and local development of their countries. 20 selected participants will follow a unique program cycle throughout 2016-2017 with a series of Trainings to strengthen organizational and functional capabilities of CSOs, the program will also focus on individual skill training such as communication and negotiation.
The training series will be finalized with a study trip to Germany.

  • Age: Between 20 and 35 years.

Civil Society Facility South Dialogue Fellowship Programme 2016 for CSOs from the MENA Region ( Fully Funded)

Implementation

  • It will be managed by the Civil Society Facility South (CSFS) in Tunis on behalf of the European Commission (DG NEAR), in close collaboration with partner CSOs from the region.
  • This programme will cover trainings’ fees. – Tunisia and Syria.

Young people have played a significant role in the recent Arab movements, demanding basic human rights for building their future towards sustainable processes.

The Fellowship programme invests in the mobilisation of youth as drivers of change and democracy : it aims to involve Youth into policy making and dialogue in the Southern Mediterranean region. It will support the creation of a network of fellows, meeting quarterly during the year, to share experience, monitor progress and provide mutual support.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be a member (or staff) of a Civil Society Organisations from the Neighbourhood South Region and comply with the definition below:
  • The EU considers CSOs to include all non-State, not-for-profit structures, non-partisan and non-violent, through which people organise to pursue shared objectives and ideals, whether political, cultural, social or economic. Operating from the local to the national, regional and international levels, they comprise urban and rural, formal and informal organisations. They include membership-based, cause-based and service-oriented CSOs. Among them, community-based organisations, non-governmental organisations, faith-based organisations, foundations, research institutions, Gender and LGBT organisations, cooperatives, professional and business associations, and the not-for-profit media. Trade unions and employers’ organisations, the so-called social partners, constitute a specific category of CSOs.

Countries Eligible:

  • Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Syria

Eligible CSOs from eligible countries are to make ONE proposition based on these requirements:

  •  applicant per organization (CSO);
  • Proposed applicant should be within the age limits of 25-36 years old;
  • Proposed applicant has at least 3 years-experience being involved in sectorial projects,
    specifically in actions of advocacy and policy dialogue;
  • English or/and French language proficiency in addition to Arabic will be required.

  • Written application from the applicant’s CSO explaining and supporting the candidacy;
  • Motivation letter from the applicant in Arabic; translated in either English or French, and

Worth

  • Each scholarship is valued at £25,500 in total, funded by Cultures of Resistance and the SOAS Students’ Union. Fees will be deducted from this amount and the remainder will be used toward maintenance.

Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Scholarship Programme 2016/2017 for study in Netherland

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Scholarship Programme (or MSP) offers scholarships to professionals from ten countries. The scholarships can be used for short courses in the Netherlands. The programme is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The overall aim of the MSP is to contribute to the democratic transition in the participating countries. It also aims at building capacity within organisations by enabling employees to take part in short courses in various fields of study.

Scholarships are available for short courses with a duration between two and twelve weeks.

For whom?

The target group is professionals (with a maximum age of 45) who are nationals of and working in one of the following countries:

  • Algeria
  • Egypt
  • Iraq
  • Jordan
  • Lebanon
  • Libya
  • Morocco
  • Oman
  • Syria
  • Tunisia

To be eligible for an MSP scholarship you:

  • must be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries on the MSP country list valid at the time of application;
  • must have an employer’s statement that complies with the format EP-Nuffic has provided. All information must be provided and all commitments that are included in the format must be endorsed in the statement;
  • must not be employed by an organisation that has its own means of staff-development. Organisations that are considered to have their own means for staff development are for example:
    • multinational corporations (e.g. Shell, Unilever, Microsoft),
    • large national and/or a large commercial organisations,
    • bilateral donor organisations (e.g. USAID, DFID, Danida, Sida, Dutch ministry of Foreign affairs, FinAid, AusAid, ADC, SwissAid),
    • multilateral donor organisations, (e.g. a UN organization, the World Bank, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, IADB),

The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) was established in 1983 under the Lomé Convention between the ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) Group of States and the European Union Member States.   • CTA look for a motivated and dynamic blogger or journalist interested in policy development issues with a focus on trade and agribusiness between the EU and the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP)
  • The job implies monitoring news, writing articles and conducting interviews of the major players in agricultural policy issues in Brussels and ACP regions.
Employment conditions
  • A one six month’s renewable contract will be offered from 1st February 2016 (starting date has some flexibility).

OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) 2016/2017 Scholarships for Student from Developing Countries (US$50,000/Student)

OFID is pleased to announce that qualified applicants who have obtained or are on the verge of completing their undergraduate degree and who wish to study for a Master’s degree are welcome to apply for the OFID Scholarship 2016/2017.

OFID scholarships will be awarded to four students or candidates for master’s degree studies. Applicants must be from a developing country (except OFID Member Countries), and he/she must first obtain admission to pursue a Master’s degree studies in a relevant field of development, from any recognized university/college in the world.

Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of graduate studies.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be between the ages of 23-32 at the time of submitting his/her application.
  • Must have obtained or be on the verge of completing their undergraduate degree with a Baccalaureate from an accredited college/university, or its equivalent.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 rating system, or its equivalent.
  • Must be matriculated at an accredited university for the upcoming academic year starting August/September 2015, and must maintain full-time status for the duration of the Master’s Degree.
  • Must be a national of a developing country (except OFID Member Countries)

Benefits

  • The winners of the OFID Scholarship Award will receive a scholarship of up to US$50,000.
  • The funds will be spread over a maximum of one year, toward the completion of a Master’s degree, or its equivalent, at an accredited educational institution, starting in the autumn of the academic year 2016/2017.
