Canon Collins Trust Sol Plaatje Scholarships 2023/2024 for Postgraduate Study in South Africa (Funded)

Canon Collins Trust in partnership with Sol Plaatje Educational Project invite applications for the postgraduate study in South Africa 2024. Canon Collins Trust will provide funding for up to a maximum of two years for Masters and three years for PhD. Continued funding depends upon satisfactory progress and academic reports.

In 2024, Canon Collins Trust will be making awards only to those studying in three areas:

1. Justice, which includes Climate Justice, Law, Economics and Politics
2. Education policy and practice
3. Humanities, which includes Literature, History, Anthropology and the Arts

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for a scholarship under this programme you must:

  • be a national of, or have refugee status in, one of the following countries: Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe
  • be normally resident in one of the above countries
  • be in possession of a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • be studying or applying to study at a South African university

Benefits

  • In 2024, the value of the scholarship package will range from R20,000 to R100,000 depending on student circumstances. We support both full and part-time Masters and PhD level study at a South African university and will consider applications from those who wish to study by distance learning.
  • Canon Collins Trust also organise an annual conference for current scholars, and hold several smaller events throughout the year. Scholarship holders are expected to participate in these activities and to become part of and contribute to our network.

  • Canon Collins Trust will open for applications on Friday 14th July 2023. The deadline for applications is at 15:00 GMT on Tuesday, 29th August 2023. Late applications will not be considered.
  • Please do not email us to ask about the outcome of your application. All notifications will be by email so please make sure you provide an accurate email address. We will be interviewing shortlisted applicants in October/November 2023. We will let you know the outcome of your application in December 2023.

IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program 2022/2023 for PhD Students Worldwide (Funded)

Since 1951, the IBM PhD Fellowship Program has collaborated with faculty, students and universities by recognizing and supporting exceptional PhD students that address focused areas of interest in technology. The IBM PhD Fellowship Awards nomination period is not yet open. Eligibility
All nominees

  • must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member; students cannot nominate themselves.
  • must be enrolled full-time in a PhD program over the two consecutive academic years of the award or forfeit the fellowship.
  • should have three years remaining in their program at the time of nomination so the fellowship can be applied to the last two years of study.
  • that are from U.S. embargoed countries are not eligible for the program.
  • that are receiving a comparable fellowship, internship, or support from another company or institution (except for academic scholarships) during the IBM PhD Fellowship funding period are ineligible for this award
  • must stay in the same program for the duration of the award —no transferring of departments or schools.


Awardees will be selected based upon
– their potential for research excellence. All awardees will have an IBM mentor for the duration of the award period and are strongly encouraged to intern during the first or second year of their award. All student visas must align with terms of the internship.
Nominating faculty must submit thoroughly developed proposals, remain engaged during the vetting and due diligence process, and use the university domain email address for all correspondence.

Benefits

Students receive named Fellowships which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. The funds are given as an unrestricted gift, and it is Google’s policy not to pay for overhead on unrestricted gifts. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor who we hope will become a valuable resource to the student. There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. Fellowship recipients serving an internship are subject to the same intellectual property and other contractual obligations as any other Google intern. If a Fellowship student is interested, an internship at Google is encouraged, but not guaranteed or required.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Students and professionals are welcome to apply to the PhD Fellowship program.For current PhD Students

  1. Applicants must be enrolled into a full-time PhD program at a university in Africa. Applicants who are currently in their first year of a part-time PhD program and transferring to full-time positions are also welcome to apply.
  2. Students should be early PhD students, i.e, should not have been into more than 1 year of their PhD. Applicants for the 2021 Fellowship must have started their program on or after 1-Jan-2021.
  3. Students must remain enrolled in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
  4. Applicants must be pursuing a PhD in Computer Science or related areas.
  5. Google employees and family members of Google employees are not eligible
  6. Students who are already receiving another corporate fellowship are not eligible.

For current Undergraduate/Masters students and Professionals

  1. Grant of the fellowship to this category of applicants is contingent on them joining a full-time PhD program at a university in Africa within the calendar year of the award.
  2. Student applicants must be full-time Undergraduate or Masters students enrolled at an African university. Professionals must be employed/affiliated with an organization registered in Africa.
  3. The Google Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for the full-time PhD program at an African university, in Computer Science or related areas, within the calendar year 2021, or the award shall be forfeited.
  4. Grant of the Google Fellowship does not mean admission to the PhD program of a university. The awardee must also complete the PhD admission process of the respective institute/university where he/she wishes to register for PhD.
  5. Grant of the Google Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institute/university where the awardee registers for the PhD program.
  6. Google employees and family members of Google employees are not eligible.

As part of the EPFL–UM6P’s Excellence in Africa initiative, the EXAF centre has launched the first call for proposals of the ‘100 PhDs for Africa’ programme: Outstanding students, who wish to benefit from this fellowship to complete a PhD at an African institution, are encouraged to apply.

UM6P and EPFLhave launched the Excellence in Africa initiative (EXAF) to support the rise of the next generation of researchers in Africa. This ground-breaking initiative aims to enhance their research skills through collaboration with EPFL professors. It is based on the premise that it will contribute to building their career and enable them to heighten their economic and societal impact in Africa.

The programme ‘100 PhDs for Africa’ is one of three pillars of the EXAF initiative. It is designed to fund science and engineering graduates intending to complete a PhD at an African higher education institution.

The PhD candidates benefiting from this programme will be jointly supervised by a professor of an African institution and by an EPFL professor. They will conduct their doctoral studies and their thesis research at their home institution, and they will spend short periods of time at EPFL and at UM6P (summer and spring schools, workshops, conferences). Their degree will be awarded by their institution in Africa.

Main eligibility criteria

  • To be a national of an African country
  • To hold a Master’s degree awarded after the 1st of January 2018 or to be enrolled in the final year of the master study 
  • To have an outstanding academic track record
  • To be enrolled in an African academic institution and reside in an African country for the duration of the PhD
  • To have the endorsement of a professor of an African institution willing to supervise the doctoral thesis for its full duration

Benefits

Funding

The programme awards funding of a maximum of 80’000 Swiss francs in total for a period of at most 54 months. Eligible costs include and are limited to:

Living allowance

A living allowance for the PhD fellow, which must be in line with the standard documented practices of the home institution

Tuition fees

  • Tuition costs may be included in the budget if there is written confirmation from the home institution that tuition fees apply for all PhD candidates

Research costs

  • Consumables and direct costs for the use of infrastructure at the home institution or at EPFL
  • Open science costs: costs for data storage and for granting access to data (open research data) and open access publication costs

Colloquia

  • Conference, summer school and workshop costs for the PhD fellow, namely travel (economy class airfares, public ground transportation), lodging, visa, vaccinations, meals, and (if applicable) conference registration fees
  • During the fellowship, the PhD fellow must participate in two summer schools organised by UM6P at Ben Guerir Campus in Morocco. Travel costs for these summer schools will also have to be included

Costs related to joint supervision

  • Travel costs for the PhD fellow to and from EPFL (economy class airfares, public ground transportation)
  • A supplementary living allowance for stay(s) at EPFL
  • Travel costs to and from the African home institution and EPFL for the supervisor and co-supervisor of the PhD fellow (economy class airfares, public ground transportation, lodging, and meals)
  • Other costs incurred by the joint supervision (e.g., joint participation in a conference, other costs related to stays at EPFL)

Outstanding science and engineering African graduates, who wish to complete a PhD at an African higher education institution in one of the EPFL research domains are strongly encouraged to apply.

The deadline for applications is the 20th of April 2021. Pre-selected applicants should be interviewed by their potential EPFL co-supervisor between the 22nd of June 2021 and the 6th of August 2021. Results are expected by September 2021.

Bursary criteria

The main criteria used in the selection of successful applicants are financial need, academic potential and career-oriented study programmes.

Please note the following:

  • An application will only be considered if it has been completed properly and in full.
  • Documents that accompany the application form must be uploaded and certified.
  • Testimonial form must be completed by the supervisor and uploaded to the application form.

For the 2021 academic year successful applicants will receive bursaries with values as stated below:

  • Hons – R90 000 (one year).
  • Masters – R100 000 per year for two years.
  • PhD – R130 000 per year for three years.

Applicants may not hold a combination of bursaries that exceed these amounts. Should an applicant have another bursary of lessor amount, SANSA will consider providing a top-up amount to the student provided the student meets the criteria mentioned above.

Support for continuing years is not guaranteed and will depend on satisfactory progress during the previous year.

The completed application must be submitted no later than 15 March 2021 if you want to be considered for a bursary for 2021.

The DAAD In-Region Scholarship Programme aims at fostering strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related Master or doctoral studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and/or research at a higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa. ​

It has been agreed upon that DAAD cooperates with the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics (MBHG) at Stellenbosch University, by offering up to 5 In-Region Scholarships for MSc studies and up to 4 In-Region Scholarships for PhD studies at MBHG for the intake 2021.​

The target group for scholarships are graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) who want  to participate in a study programme (MSc or PhD studies) at the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics. Stellenbosch University will screen, pre-select (according to DAAD selection criteria) and short-list the applicants.

The Africa Institute, a globally oriented center for research, documentation, study and teaching of Africa and its diaspora in the humanities and social sciences, today announces the inaugural group of fellowships awarded through its new Research Fellowships Program. Conceived as a research-based think-tank and a postgraduate studies institution, the Institute offers both masters and PhD programs dedicated to training a new generation of critical thinkers in African and African diaspora studies and evolving a new model for academic research, teaching and documentation in the field.

The Africa Institute Research Fellowships Program provides the opportunity for both junior and senior scholars of African and African diaspora studies to focus on a research project and participate in ongoing scholarly and intellectual activities during their term at the Institute. The inaugural cohort includes two senior fellows and two postdoctoral fellows, and will offer fellows the opportunity to interact with scholars and academics in their area of research with the aim of enriching their scholarly experiences and future projects.

DAAD Development-Related Postgraduate Courses Master’s Scholarships 2021 for study in Germany (Funded)

This programme is designed to further qualify future leaders in selected fields and to prepare them in practice-oriented courses for their professional life. Very good graduates with a first university degree and with at least two years of related professional experience after the first degree (bachelor) get the chance to obtain a master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance to the development of their home country in the fields mentioned below.

On completion of the academic education a six month practical phase will follow. With this programme, DAAD intends to support the improvement of employability: The programme contributes to the provision of academically qualified experts for the economic development within the special initiative´s core areas.

Requirements

The scholarship programme is open to graduates from Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal and Tunisia with
mandatory focus in the following assigned fields:

  • Development of business parks and industrial zones
  • Agrobusiness and Value Creation
  • Automotive and Mobility
  • Information and Communication Technology/ Digital Economy/ New Technologies (including Renewable Energy/ Energy Efficiency)
  • Textile Industry

Target Group:

  • The programme is open for very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent) and at least two year of
    relevant working experience in the relevant fields (see above) who want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of
    their home countries.
  • It is offered both for young graduates with professional experience and for mid-career professionals.

Value

Scholarship of currently monthly 861 € for selected master´s programmes at German institutions of higher education listed
below. The study programmes are usually starting in Sep/Oct 2021 and are taught in German and/or English.
• contributions to health insurance in Germany
• appropriate travel allowance
• study and research subsidy
• monthly rent subsidy where applicable,
• allowances for spouses and/or children where applicable.
• 2-months-German language course prior to the beginning of the respective course.

For courses taught in German: 6-months-German language course from April 2021 to September 2021. The language course takes place at selected institutes in Germany and usually not at the universities of the selected master’s programmes. The language course is compulsory.

The scholarship holders are offered a special tutoring at their host institutions financed by DAAD. Furthermore, the scholars are invited to participate in different networking events.
DAAD-scholarship holders are exempt from tuition fees

Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme 2021 for study in Ireland

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is an established national initiative, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and managed by the Council.

In 2019 alone, we invested a total of over €13.6 million on 809 Government of Ireland Postgraduate scholars across six calls (2013-2019).

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is unique in the Irish research landscape and complements other channels for funded postgraduate education in the Irish eco-system. Among its features are:

  • individual, prestigious awards for excellent research in the name of the applicant;
  • an objective selection process using international, independent expert peer review;
  • funding across all disciplines, from archaeology to zoology;
  • awards for bottom-up, non-directed research, with the exception of those funded by our strategic funding partners.

The programme provides outstanding students with the opportunity to direct their own research at the early-career stage, working with a supervisor, in their chosen area of interest. Pioneering proposals addressing new and emerging fields of research or those introducing creative, innovative approaches are welcomed. Proposals of an interdisciplinary nature are also encouraged as it is recognised that advancing fundamental understanding is achieved by integrating information, techniques, tools and perspectives from two or more disciplines.

Requirements

All applicants:

  • must have a first class or upper second-class honours bachelor’s, or the equivalent, degree. If undergraduate examination results are not known at the time of application, the Council may make a provisional offer of a scholarship on condition that the scholar’s bachelor’s, or the equivalent, degree result is a first class or upper second-class honours. If a scholar does not have a first class or upper second-class honours bachelor’s, or the equivalent, degree, they must possess a master’s degree. The Council’s determination of an applicant’s eligibility on these criteria is final;
  • must not have had two previous unsuccessful applications to the programme, including to strategic partner themes;
  • in the case of applications for a research master’s, must not currently hold, or have previously held, a Council scholarship;
  • in the case of applications for a doctoral degree, must not currently hold, or have previously held, any Council scholarship other than that which would have enabled them to obtain a research master’s degree.
  • Applicants will fall under one of two categories based on nationality and residency.
  • Category One: Applicants must meet BOTH of the following criteria:
    • be a national of a European Union member state OR Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein or Switzerland
    AND
    • have been ordinarily resident 6
    in a European Union member state OR Iceland,

VALUE OF THE POSTGRADUATE AWARD
• The total value of the scholarship fund will be up to a maximum of €24,000 7
in any approved year and consist of the following:
o a stipend of €16,000 per annum;a contribution to fees, including non-European Union scholarship fees, paid to the HEI up
to a maximum of €5,750 per annum
– Any differential must be paid by the scholar and/or HEI.
Research Office or relevant office must inform the Council of fee requirements per annum in line with the preparation of Award Letter of Offer or as close to the award start date as possible. Research Office or relevant offices must inform the Council of any
scholars who hold a fee waiver from their HEI, or where no fee is required, or where fees are paid in full or in part by a third party, as such scholars will not be eligible for the fee portion of the scholarship;
o eligible direct research expenses of €2,250 per annum to enable the scholar to carry out the research project.

The Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme is a South African strand of a broader Ireland Fellows Programme managed by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Ireland Fellows Programme enables early to mid-career professionals from eligible countries, with leadership potential, to benefit from a prestigious, world-class, quality education contributing to capacity building. It offers selected students the opportunity to undertake a fully funded one-year master’s level programme at a higher education institution (HEI) in Ireland.

  • be seeking funding for a full-time postgraduate programme in one of the above listed subject areas
  • be able to take up fellowship in the academic year 2021/2022
  • Must not have applied for Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme on more than one previous occasion.

Please note applicants already in possession of a Master’s degree are not eligible

DAAD 2020 Study Scholarships – Postgraduate Studies in the Field of Architecture in Germany (Fully Funded)

DAAD scholarships offer graduates the opportunity to continue their education in Germany with a postgraduate or continuing course of study. The scholarships also promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues.

Requirements:

  • Foreign applicants who have gained a first university degree in the areas of Architecture, Interior Design, Monument Conservation, Urban Planning/Urban Development, Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, Landscape Planning at the latest by the time they commence their scholarship-supported study programme.

Funding

In this study programme, you can complete

  • a Master’s degree/postgraduate degree leading to a final qualification, or
  • a complementary course that does not lead to a final qualification (not an undergraduate course) at a state or state-recognised German university of your choice.
  • This programme only funds projects in the area of Design/Planning. Other DAAD scholarship programmes are available for applicants from the field of History of Architecture or applicants with a scientific project.

Duration of the funding

Master’s degree programme:

  • Between 10 and 24 months depending on the length of the chosen study programme or project
  • Start: usually from 1st October of the following year after the application, or earlier if a language course is taken prior to the study programme
  • The scholarships are awarded for the duration of the standard period of study for the chosen study programme (up to a maximum of 24 months). To receive further funding after the first year of study for 2-year courses, proof of academic achievements thus far should indicate that the study programme can be successfully completed within the standard period of study.
  • Applicants who are already in Germany in the first year of a postgraduate course at the time of application may apply for funding for their second year of study. In this case, it is not possible to extend the scholarship.

Complementary studies not leading to a final qualification

  • one academic year
  • Start: usually from 1st October of the following year after the application, or earlier if a language course is taken prior to the study programme

Value

  • A monthly payment of 850 euros
  • Travel allowance
  • One-off study allowance
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover

Under certain circumstances, scholarship holders may receive the following additional benefits:

  • Monthly rent subsidy
  • Monthly allowance for accompanying members of family

To enable scholarship holders to learn German in preparation for their stay in the country, DAAD offers the following services:

  • Payment of course fees for the online language course “Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)” (www.deutsch-uni.com) for six months after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter
  • if necessary: Language course (2, 4 or 6 months) before the start of the study visit; the DAAD decides whether to fund participation and for how long depending on German language skills and project. Participation in a language course is compulsory if the language of instruction or working language is German at the German host institution.
  • Allowance for a personally chosen German language course during the scholarship period
  • Reimbursement of the fees for the TestDaF test which has either been taken in the home country after receipt of the Scholarship Award Letter or in Germany before the end of the funding period.
  • As an alternative to the TestDaF for scholarship holders who have taken a language course beforehand: the fee for a DSH examination taken during the scholarship period may be reimbursed.

CECIL Renaud Overseas Scholarship 2021 for young South Africans study in the United Kingdom

Dr Cecil Renaud, a well-known Durban Philanthropist, established The Cecil Renaud Educational and Charitable Trust in 1988. Dr Renaud passed away on 3 June 1993 and bequeathed the residue of his estate to the Trust. Shortly after the Trust became active, the trustees established the Overseas Scholarship.

The Overseas Scholarship, granted annually to one or two students, is awarded for a maximum of two years for post-graduate study (Masters degree (or equivalent) or PhD) in the United Kingdom at a university of the student’s choice.

Since 1994, we have awarded 29 scholarships to the best and brightest young South Africans.
In past years students who have been awarded the Scholarship have attended, inter alia, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford and the University of London across a wide range of disciplines. This Scholarship is available only to students who completed their secondary schooling at any school in KwaZulu-Natal, and you must be in your final year of a postgraduate honours degree, or four year undergraduate degree.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Applicants should have attained, or aim to achieve, undergraduate or Honours degree(s) cum laude or summa cum laude; and additionally, have achieved Dean’s Commendations and Certificates of Merit or equivalent.

ATTENDED SECONDARY SCHOOL IN KZN

L’Oréal-UNESCO Sub-Saharan Africa Young Talents Programme 2020 for African Women in Science

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science sub-Saharan Africa regional program aims to promote and encourage the participation of young African women in science. This programidentifies and rewards young talented researchers in the formal sciences, life and environmental sciences, material sciences, engineering sciences and technological sciences.

So far, the majority of applications received for the sub-Saharan Africa regional program have come mainly from South Africa. Given the importance of the challenges of African scientific research and our commitment to encourage more women scientists across sub-Saharan Africa, we decided to separate the initial regional program into two separate programs:

 A new programme dedicated to South Africa
 The regional program of sub-Saharan Africa, with the 48 other countries of the region (see the list of countries in Appendice 1)

For this 11th edition, 20 endowments will be given to encourage young researchers currently in doctoral or post-doctoral studies to pursue a brilliant scientific career.

15 endowments of 10,000 € each, will be allocated to 15 doctoral students enrolled in a doctoral school and in a research laboratory in sub-Saharan Africa (see section 2.

Eligibility

  • Pursuing studies leading to a PhD degree or having obtained a PhD degree in the following scientific fields: Life sciences, Environmental sciences, Physical sciences, Engineering and technological sciences, Mathematics and Computer science
  • Being from one of the 48 countries of the Sub-Saharan region
  • Enrolled in a doctoral Institution and/or working in a research Laboratory/University or Institution of the 49 countries of the Sub-saharan region (including South Africa)
    OR
  • Being from one of the 49 countries of the Sub-Saharan region
  • Enrolled in a doctoral Institution and/or working in a research Laboratory/University or Institution of the 48 countries of the Sub-Saharan region

Application Process:

Applications are made by the candidates themselves only through the online platform: www.forwomeninscience.com. An application is only considered complete when it includes all of the following documents:
_ A detailed CV of 1 to 2 pages maximum including training, dissemination actions, commitments of the candidate, etc.
 Copies of diplomas or certificates obtained from the license in their original language,
 A summary of research work in 200 words maximum (intended for a panel of scientific experts),
 A detailed description of the research work of 2 pages maximum, including the references (Text justified, Times New Roman font, size 12 with single spacing
 An estimated budget detailing the expenditure envisaged to support the coherence and realism of the research work. This budget must not exceed € 10,000 for doctoral students and € 15,000 for post-doctoral researchers (in the form of a table with projected expenses). If the estimated budget is less than the amount allocated, the excess may be spent after the year following the Prize (there is no limited time for its use).
 At least two letters of recommendation, each assessing the quality of the CV, the originality of the project and mentioning the relationship and human dimensions of the candidate.
 A list of the candidate’s publications (from the most recent to the oldest),
 for doctoral students: the 2 publications (article, patents, oral communications, posters, etc.) published or in the process of being published.
 for post-doctoral students: the 2 most important publications (scientific publications, patents, etc.).
To note :

  • Incomplete files or files received after the deadline, as well as applications which do not meet the conditions set out above, will not be taken into consideration.

University of Pretoria MasterCard Foundation Undergraduate & Postgraduate Scholars Program (MCFSP) 2019/2020 for study in South Africa (Fully Funded)

The University of Pretoria (UP) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation (MCF) is currently offering scholarships for high achieving African students interested in studying at postgraduate levels, commencing in January 2020.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program (MCFSP) targets academically talented yet economically disadvantaged young people in Africa who will contribute to the transformation of the continent through their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values evidenced by their leadership. Community service and internships are essential components of the Program. The MCFSP offers a full scholarship to selected students who have been provisionally admitted to study towards a postgraduate degree at UP. Graduates must return to their home countries on completion of their studies and give back to their communities.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars welcomes outstanding and award winning scholars, practitioners, journalists and public intellectuals to take part in its non-partisan dialogue. Each year, the Center hosts around 160 scholars who conduct independent research on national and/or international issues addressing key public policy challenges. Through its scholars, the Center enriches crucial policy debates and provides a platform for scholars in the tradition of President Wilson to bring the worlds of policy and ideas together.

In addition to its flagship international Fellowship program, the Center also hosts scholars selected through its individual programs.

 Fellows conduct research and write in their areas of interest, while interacting with policymakers in Washington and Wilson Center staff and other scholars in residence.

Through an international competition, the Center offers 9-month residential fellowships. The Wilson Center accepts policy-relevant, non-advocacy fellowship proposals that address key challenges confronting the United States and the world.

The Center awards approximately 20-22 residential fellowships each year. Fellows will be affiliated with one or more of the Wilson Center programs/projects/offices and are encouraged to interact with policy makers in Washington, D.C. as well as with Wilson Center staff and other scholars who are working on similar research and topics.

Eligibility

  • Citizens or permanent residents from any country (applicants from countries outside the United States must hold a valid passport and be able to obtain a J-1 visa even if they are currently in the United States) (Read more information on visas.)
  • Men and women with outstanding capabilities and experience from a wide variety of backgrounds (including academia, business, government, journalism, and other professions)
  • Academic candidates holding a Ph.D. (Ph.D. must be received by the application deadline of October 1)
  • Academic candidates demonstrating scholarly achievement by publications beyond their doctoral dissertations
  • Practitioners or policymakers with an equivalent level of professional achievement
  • English proficiency as the Center is designed to encourage the exchange of ideas among its fellows

Stipend

The Center tries to ensure that the fellowship award, when combined with the recipient’s other sources of income (e.g. other grants and sabbatical allowances), approximates an individual’s current level of income.

Awards will also include round trip travel for fellows. If spouses and/or dependent children will reside with the fellow for the entire fellowship period, money for their travel will also be included. In addition to stipends and travel allowances, the Center provides 75 percent of health insurance premiums for fellows who elect Center coverage and for their accompanying family members.

Two letters of reference must be submitted online by October 9 or postmarked by October 1. If you are submitting online, please ensure that you submit the correct email address for your referees.
