Budding entrepreneurs across Africa can now apply to join the second annual Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP) for start-up businesses based in Africa.

Applications for 2016 open on 1 January and can be made by any for-profit business based in Africa, including new business ideas which have been in existence for less than three years.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP)  a 12-week programme to equip startups with the basic skills required to launch and run their businesses at the early stage of their growth.The programme will bring together the best tools and frameworks to teach and hone entrepreneurship skills in Africa and globally.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme #TEEP, a Pan-African entrepreneurship initiative of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, is a multi-year programme of training, funding, and mentoring, designed to empower the next generation of African entrepreneurs.

The programme will be a mix of online and face-to-face instruction, including webinars and video tutorials with support from your mentor throughout. It will cover topics on starting and scaling a business, business development, marketing strategy, effective management and product design.

Requirements:

The Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme is open to citizens and legal residents of all 54 African countries.

Benefits:

Successful applicants who complete the programme will receive the local currency equivalent of Naira 850,000 as non-returnable seed capital, and are eligible for a further Naira 850,000 in the form of either debt or equity, depending on business need and other criteria.

Selected entrepreneurs will join the existing cohort of 1,000 Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurs, from 51 countries, who formed the inaugural 2015 cycle of the TEEP programme and have thus far, received considerable benefits from their participation, including:

  • Training: 12 weeks of training on how to set up and manage businesses with mentoring and financial support offered by The Tony Elumelu Foundation.
  • Accelerated Growth: Over 90% of Tony Elumelu entrepreneurs, with existing businesses, have reported increased growth in the past year.
  • Access to Further Funding: A significant portion of our entrepreneurs have accessed additional external funding through the platform provided by Tony Elumelu Foundation.
  • Networking Opportunities: A flourishing alumni network has developed, providing personal linkages and business opportunities across the Continent.

TEEP is a commitment by the Tony Elumelu Foundation to identify and fund 10,000 African entrepreneurs over a 10-year period.

International Journalists‘ Programmes (IJP) Southern African Journalists’ Bursary Programme 2016 in Germany (3.000 Euro Stipend)

Every year the International Journalists‘ Programmes (IJP) offer a bursary to up to six young Southern African (SADC-Member States: Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe + Kenia) and up to five young German journalists.
For two months (June/July) the Southern African delegates will have the chance to work in Germany. They will be integrated into the day-to-day journalism of their host newsroom while also researching stories for their home media. It is assumed that all candidates have a strong command of the English language.
German language abilities are an advantage but are not mandatory. The Southern African Bursary is a multiyear effort to shape an integrated understanding of the other country and region and to foster relations between Africa and Germany. The bursary is intended to enable young journalists to gain valuable insights into the political, economical,
cultural as well as the social fabric of the host country.
The Southern African-German Journalists’ Programme is a multiyear effort to shape an integrated understanding of the other country and region and to foster relations between Africa and Germany. It has been offered as a response to concerns about an increasing political and cultural detachment between Africa and Europe. The bursary is intended to enable young journalists to gain valuable insights into the political, economical, cultural as well as the social fabric of the host country.
Benefits:
  • The Southern African delegates receive a fixed payment of 3.000 Euro.
  • This is expected to cover most of their travel, accommodation and living expenses. No further payments will be made: delegates are expected to use their own funds for any further costs. Payment for their work with the host media is not envisaged

Application Procedure:

All journalists from Southern Africa (SADC Member States + Kenia) between the age of 25 and 40 who regularly work for a media organization can apply.
  • Enclose a CV with a passport photograph.
  • Write a 800 word essay addressing the following topics
– Why you would like to work in Germany?
– What you expect from the IJP and what you think you can
contribute to it?
– What are the 3 research topics you want to pursue during the
fellowship?
– What role you expect to play at your home media in the future
– How you will spend the bursary?
  • Include a one-page resume detailing your education and work experience, your standard of German and English (copies of certificates/ e.g. Goethe Institute/Toefel), plus 2 copies of articles written by you (TV and radio journalists must type up their reports since no audio or video tapes can be considered).
  • A journalistic reference from your editor or head of department is required (freelancers should submit a reference from a senior journalist). It should also guarantee your leave of absence for the duration of the program.

Call for Applications: Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund 2016 for African Researchers

The Biosciences eastern and central Africa – International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI) Hub, located in Nairobi, Kenya, is a shared agricultural research and biosciences platform that exists to increase access for African researchers to affordable, world-class research facilities.

The mission of the BecA-ILRI Hub is “Mobilizing Bioscience for Africa’s Development” by providing a Centre of Excellence in agricultural biosciences, which enables research, capacity building and product incubation, conducted by scientists in Africa and for Africa, and empowers African institutions to harness innovations for regional impact. This mission is achieved by the BecA–ILRI Hub’s contributions to:

  • Research: enabling research to harness the potential of the biosciences to contribute to increasing agricultural productivity and to improving food and nutritional safety and security.
  • Education: contributing to the education and training of the next generation of African agricultural research leaders and scientists.
  • Innovation: promoting the development, delivery and adoption of new technologies to address key agricultural productivity constraints.

The purpose of the ABCF fellowship program is to develop capacity for agricultural biosciences research in Africa, to support research for development projects that ultimately contribute towards increasing food and nutritional security and/or food safety in Africa, and to facilitate access to the BecA-ILRI Hub facilities by African researchers (and their partners).

BecA–ILRI Hub seek applicants with innovative ideas for short to medium term research projects (up to 12 months) aligned with national, regional or continental agricultural development priorities that can be undertaken at the BecA-ILRI Hub.

Eligibility/applicant requirements

  • National (passport holder) of a BecA-ILRI Hub target country for this call: Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Madagascar, São Tomé and Príncipe, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan. In exceptional cases we may consider applicants from other African countries. The applicant MUST be a researcher employed at a NARI or university.

Please note that applicants from BURKINA FASO, CAMEROON, ETHIOPIA, GHANA, KENYA, RWANDA, SENEGAL, TANZANIA and UGANDA are NOT eligible to apply to this call. A separate strategy has been developed to support these countries through nominations, to build on the on-going engagements between national research organizations and universities in these countries and the BecA-ILRI Hub. The nomination will also aim at filling priority national research gaps jointly identified through on-going engagements. HOWEVER, research scientists from the nine countries may apply to this call only if;

(i) They have own funding to fully support their research and all other costs while at the BecA-ILRI Hub, or

(ii) They are able to secure a significant portion (at least 50%) of their total research budget and other necessary costs while at the BecA-ILRI Hub. In this case they would be seeking partial funding through application for an ABCF fellowship.

  • Currently engaged in research in food and nutritional security or food safety in Africa, or in a research area with relevance to agriculture in Africa.
  •  Good working knowledge of written and spoken English.
  •  Completed online application form.
  • A signed letter of endorsement of the application from the head of the applicant’s home institute/organization/university faculty.

 

Fellowship Worth:

The BecA-ILRI Hub has secured funding to sponsor several fellowships on a highly competitive basis. The fellowship will cover the following costs[1];

  • Research costs at the BecA-ILRI Hub;
  • Travel;
  • Medical insurance;
  • Accommodation;
  • A modest subsistence allowance.

Government of India (ICCR) Africa Scholarships 2016/2017 for Study in India (Fully Funded)

The Government of India is offering the Africa Scholarship through Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) under Africa Scholarship Scheme for Undergraduate, Postgraduate, M. Phil./Ph.D and Post-Doctoral Fellowship in various Indian Universities/Institutes.

At the inaugural plenary of the India – Africa Forum Summit held in New Delhi in April 2008, the Honorable Prime Minister of India announced the Government of India’s initiative to enhance the academic opportunities for students of African countries in India by increasing the number of scholarships for them to pursue under-graduate, post-graduate and higher courses.
The ICCR implements this scheme on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) 2016 for Master’s Level Study in Sweden (Fully Funded)

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) are awarded to students from selected countries for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester 2016. The scholarships cover both living costs and tuition fees. An estimated 300 scholarships will be available.

SISS is the Swedish government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. It is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden and administered by the Swedish Institute (SI), the programme offers a unique opportunity for future leaders to develop professionally and academically, to experience Swedish society and culture, and to build a long-lasting relationship with Sweden and with each other.

The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of the societies in which they live. Ideal candidates are ambitious young professionals with outstanding academic qualifications, demonstrated leadership experience and a clear idea of how a study programme in Sweden would benefit their country.

The scholarship is intended for full-time master’s level studies of one or two years, and is only awarded for programmes starting in the autumn semester. The scholarship is granted for one academic year (two semesters) at a time. It will be extended for programmes longer than two semesters, provided that the student has passed his/her courses/credits.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be from an eligible country and have at least a total of two years of experience from voluntary work, paid or unpaid internship, position of trust and/or full/part time employment.
  • Applicants must display outstanding academic qualifications and leadership experience. In addition, applicants should show an ambition to make a difference by working with issues which contribute to a just and sustainable development in their country, in a long term perspective.
  • Eligible countries 

    The programme is open to three different categories of countries. Approximately 100 scholarships within each category will be available.

Category 1:

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina-Faso, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Category 2:

Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Syria.

Category 3:

Candidates with citizenships from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients other than the above, or ODA countries included in other SI scholarship programmes, can apply within this category.

Kindly note that to be considered for a scholarship, you must first both complete your separate application to the master’s programme(s) before the university deadline 15 January 2016, and pay your university admissions application fee (SEK 900) before 1 February 2016

Eligible programmes

The scholarship application consists of two steps, the first step will be open 1 December 2015 – 20 January 2016, followed by a detailed second step for successful candidates from the first step, 8–13 February 2016.

Scholarship Benefits:

  • The scholarship covers both tuition fees (paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 9,000 per month. There are no additional grants for family members.
  • The scholarship period cannot be altered or extended beyond the study programme period, nor can the scholarship be transferred to a study programme other than the awarded one.

  • Travel grants

    Scholarship holders from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients receive a travel grant in connection with their scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 15,000.

    Insurance

    Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance and Personal Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

  • Network memberships

    All SI scholarship holders become members of, and help develop, the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL) – a network which offers exclusive opportunities for SI scholarship holders during their stay in Sweden.

Application Process:

  • To be considered for a scholarship, you must first both complete your separate application to the master’s programme(s) before the university deadline of 15 January 2016, and pay your university admissions application fee (SEK 900) before 1 February 2016.
  • For the second step of the scholarship application you will be required to submit a Motivation letter, a Europass format CV, a passport copy, and two recommendation letters. The documents must be in English. If any mandatory document is not used or completed in English the application is deemed ineligible.

First step 1 December 2015 – 20 January 2016:

The first part of the application process will open on 1 December 2015. Apply through our online system. No documents will be required in the first step.

The scholarship application form is now available at the SI application portal. Application deadline is 24:00 CET on Wednesday 20 January 2016.

Second step 8–13 February 2016:

  1. Prepare a motivation letter according to the Swedish Institute template. Motivation letters in any other templates or formats are NOT valid. Make sure to read the questions in the motivation letter thoroughly, and be specific and personal in your reasoning. Answers may not exceed the allowed number of characters (letters and spaces) for each question. The template will be uploaded here in January 2016.
  2. Prepare a Curriculum Vitae (CV) in English, only using the Europass format of maximum three pages. A CV submitted in another format than the Europass format is NOT valid. Additional pages will not be considered.
  3. Prepare two references according to the SI template. At least one of the references must be in connection to one of the work experiences you mention in your application. Remember that a letter of reference which is not signed is NOT valid. The reference template will be uploaded here in January 2016.
  4. Prepare a copy of your passport to enclose with your application. Your personal data including citizenship and photograph must show clearly.
  5. The online application portal opens on 8 February 2016. Apply through our online system. A link to the online system will be published on this page on 8 February 2016.

An application without a valid and completed motivation letter, CV, letter of reference or copy of passport is deemed ineligible.

You need to submit a separate copy of your scholarship application for each eligible master’s programme which you have applied to. For example, if you have applied to the maximum four master’s programmes, you must submit four separate and complete online scholarship applications.

Each application must have a motivation letter, a CV, two letters of reference and a copy of your passport attached. You may use the same motivation letter, CV, passport copy and letters of reference for each application, or create unique ones for each master’s programme.

  • 1 December 2015–15 January 2016: University application and payment of application fee on universityadmissions.se.
  • 1 December 2015 – 20 January 2016: First step of the scholarship application. Apply for a Swedish Institute Study Scholarship through the online application service.

Caterpillar launches free e-learning website for future technicians in Africa

Pilot phase of e-learning website launched for people who have the ambition to become a technician in Nigeria, Mozambique and DR Congo

Caterpillar today announced that it has launched the pilot-phase of the Technicians for Africa Project, an e-learning website for people who aspire to become a technician in Nigeria, Mozambique and DR Congo.

Technicians for Africa is an absolutely free online program for Africans seeking a new and exciting career as a service technician. Technicians for Africa is sponsored by Caterpillar, the global leader in construction and mining equipment. In just 3-6 months you can achieve Foundational Certification and begin an exciting journey towards a possible career as a well paid and highly valued service technician in the automotive, trucking or heavy equipment industry.

The website, which is available in French, Portuguese and English, is leveraging Caterpillar’s existing, state of the art e-learning solutions and makes them available for anyone in the three countries that has the ambition to develop a career as a heavy equipment Technician.

“This is just one of the ways that we’re looking to boost the skills in the industry as a whole. There is a vital need for skilled labour across these sectors in Africa. We are proud to see the launch of this initiative,” said David Picard, Region Manager responsible for Caterpillar’s distribution in Africa.

The pilot websites in English, French and Portuguese have already been launched and during the pilot stage they will be available in Nigeria, DR Congo and Mozambique. The access to the basic Caterpillar Technician curriculum is free. Those who register for the curriculum will have the opportunity to upgrade their knowledge and upon successful completion of the curriculum, will earn a certificate of completion.

“Many School leavers are unable to enter the job market because they have been unable to receive enough technical knowledge when they leave school. In schools, the latest technical information isn’t always available,” explained Maurice Manders, Caterpillar’s Learning and Development Manager and also team leader of the e-learning project. “Offering an Internet-based basic learning curriculum that is available to schools and students is an efficient solution to this challenge,” he added.

The YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa is looking for young men and women between the ages of 18 and 35 from Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, DRC, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda who are ready to embrace leadership and work hard to transform their countries.

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was launched by President of the United States Barack Obama as a signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. The need to invest in grooming strong, results-oriented leaders comes out of the statistics: nearly 1 in 3 Africans are between the ages of 10 and 24, and approximately 60% of Africa’s total population is below the age of 35.

Selected participants aged 18-35 years, drawn from 14 countries in East and Central Africa; namely Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central Africa Republic, South Sudan, and Congo, engage in innovative leadership training across three tracks of study of (1) Business and Entrepreneurship, (2) Civic Leadership, and (3) Public Management.

Located at Kenyatta University, in Nairobi, Kenya, the Center is more than a location for learning or a venue for collaboration; it is a philosophy, a forward-leaning culture of diversity that invites dreaming and thinking differently to define and realize one’s potential. The program is inclusive, embracing future leaders regardless of religion, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, or disability.

The YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa is supported by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Eligibility:

Competition for the YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa is merit-based and open to young East African leaders who meet the following criteria:

  • Are 18 to 35 years of age at the time of application submission,
  • Are citizens and residents of one of the following countries: Burundi, Central African Republic. Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda,
  • Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

Selection Criteria

Selection for participation in the YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa will be conducted as a merit-based, open competition. All eligible applications will be reviewed by a selection panel. Chosen semi-finalists will then be interviewed before a final selection is made and an invitation to join the program is issued.

Selection panels will use the following criteria to evaluate applications:

  • A demonstrated leadership in public service, business and entrepreneurship, or civic engagement.
  • Active engagement in public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
  • The ability to work cooperatively in diverse groups and respect the opinions of others.
  • Strong social and communication skills.
  • An energetic, positive attitude.
  • A demonstrated knowledge, interest, and professional experience in the sector/track selected, and
  • A commitment to apply leadership skills and training to benefit your country and/or community after the program.

Program Details:

  • The fellowship begins with eight weeks of training in the Acumen New York office, where Fellows build their understanding of the problems of poverty, the current tensions on the sector as we explore solutions and understand the role we have to play.
  • The 2 months are also an exploration and reflection on Self, Other, and System, requiring deep introspection, and a willingness to change our own values, beliefs, behaviors, before we can effect change in the world.
  • After training, each Fellow is placed with a company within Acumen’s ecosystem where they work on a key business challenge.
  • In the past Fellows have worked on projects ranging from leading operations of a new business unit at a cotton ginnery in Uganda, to leading operations at a coffee processing company in Rwanda, to building partnerships for a vocational skills training company in India.

Each year, the WISE Awards recognize and promote six successful innovative projects that are addressing global educational challenges. Since 2009, WISE has received more than 2,850 applications from over 150 countries.

The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), an initiative of QATAR FOUNDATION, invites applications for the 2016 WISE Awards.

The 2016 WISE Awards will identify, celebrate, and promote six innovative projects for their positive contribution to education and society. The Awards highlight initiatives found to be most creative and effective in finding solutions to education challenges at any level and in all environments. In bringing forward these models, WISE is helping build a network of recognized change-makers to inspire change in education.

Representatives of projects are invited to submit applications to demonstrate the nature and reach of their activities. Nominations of projects are also invited. Past winning projects have addressed a wide range of concerns and pursuits, including access to quality education, life-long learning opportunities, and the use of technology.

Today, 42 projects have been awarded, from a wide variety of sectors and locations for their innovative character, their positive contribution and their potential for scalability and adaptability. These projects represent a growing resource of expertise and sound educational practice.

Year by year, WISE is building a community of educational innovators which offers a fertile environment for groundbreaking collaborations. Today the WISE Awards network comprises pioneering projects that are helping bring real change to societies and communities.

Eligibility Requirements:

The 2016 WISE Awards submission procedure accepts both applications and nominations. Ongoing/existing education projects run by any type of organization
1 in any education sector
2 and from any part of the world can apply or be nominated for the WISE Awards.
  • Applications can only be for original works and original projects and must be submitted by a project representative working within the project.
  • All applicants must therefore guarantee that their organization, or they themselves, originated the project, and can not hold QATAR FOUNDATION liable for any action or claim from a third party with respect to the project submitted.
  • Nominations can be submitted by persons outside the organization running the project.
  • Nominators will be requested to identify themselves in the submission form; this information will be kept confidential by QATAR FOUNDATION.
  • Nominators may or may not request information from the project in order to best complete the nomination form

Selection Process:

  • Project representatives from any region, educational sector or level may submit applications which demonstrate the quality and impact of their activities in accordance with the criteria.
  • Following this global annual call for applications, a Pre-Jury composed of education experts assesses the submissions to select the Finalists.
  • Following this, a Jury bringing together leading personalities from the education world chooses the six Award winning projects. Winners receive global visibility along with a prize of $20,000 (US) and are honored at the annual WISE Summit.

  • The deadline for submission of applications is January 15, 2016, 13.00 GMT.
  • The Pre-Jury will then review all eligible applications.
  • The shortlisted 15 Finalist Projects will be announced in April 2016.

2016/2017 Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships for Study in the United Kingdom.

Loughborough University is delighted to announce full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa. These will be known as the Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships.

The scholarships are being funded through a combination of generous external funding and University funds. The University will award a limited number of scholarships and the standards required are very high.

Students will be expected to fund their travel and maintenance costs through other sources. Evidence of maintenance funds must be included in the scholarship application.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applications will be initially shortlisted and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel of senior staff of the University. The selection panel will use the following eligibility criteria when assessing applications:

  • Currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa
  • Evidence of exceptional academic achievement (normally a 1st Class Honours Degree)
  • Commitment to return to their home country on completion of postgraduate programme
  • Evidence of the ability and commitment to making a significant contribution to their home country on their return
  • Full understanding of the costs involved in coming to study and live in the UK
  • Evidence of strong motivation and initiative to secure funds to cover the remainder of the costs involved

Scholarship Benefits

  • The scholarships will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded).

2016 AFD-PSIA Student Scholarships in Development for Africans to Study in France

Based on a special partnership between the Paris School of International Affairs of Sciences Po (PSIA) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD),multiple scholarships ranging from partial to full tuition fee grants will be offered every year to incoming students in the Master in Development Practice at PSIA. The AFD is the main implementing agency for France’s official development assistance to developing countries and overseas territories.
Eligibility Requirements:
  • The AFD-PSIA Scholarship is dedicated to nationals of African countries only. Priority will be given to students coming from the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic,Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Liberia, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
  • Applicants must have already submitted a full application to the Paris School of International Affairs of Sciences Po (PSIA) for the 2016 intake through the Sciences Po Admissions Portal (including all supporting documents and references) and must have applied to PSIA’s Master in Development Practice (one-year program).
  • Please note that only applicants successfully admitted to PSIA will be considered for the scholarship.
  • Students applying to a dual degree program are not eligible.

The Scholarship:

  • Multiple scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to the best candidates on the basis of their academic record and their project at Sciences Po.
  • In principle, the AFD-PSIA Scholarship goes towards covering tuition fees.
  • The AFD-PSIA scholarship is offered for the entire length of study at PSIA on condition of sufficient academic performance (top 50% of the class): students enrolled on the Master in Development Practice must show sufficient academic performance during the first semester or their scholarship will be withdrawn in the second semester.
  • The scholarship is dependent on the awardees completing their course of study at PSIA. A change in Master will lead to the withdrawal of the scholarship.
  • Please note that the scholarship offer is for students beginning their studies in September 2016 and may not be deferred

  • Step 3 – Submit your essay by completing the scholarship application form between 1 November 2015 – 31 March 2016.

Selection Process:

  • The university has appointed a committee to judge all essays. The judges will select the 54 students whose essays will have impressed them most and award the scholarships to them. The decision of the jury will be binding. You will be informed about the results via email before 15 May 2016.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Are you under 35 years old? Do you want to create a business or develop one that is less than two years old? Are you a citizen of one of these 34 African countries: Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of Guinea, Republic of the Congo, Reunion, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia or Zimbabwe?* If so, this challenge is for you!
  • Total is interested in all your projects, regardless of the type of business or activity, as long as they share the characteristics common to creative start-ups: innovation, competitiveness, growth boosting and job creation.

Award:

  • To get their business project off the ground or develop a business less than two years old, each winner of the “Startupper of the year by Total” challenge will receive individual coaching.
  • On completion of the coaching, Total will also provide financial support for their project.

Jury:

  • In each of the 34 countries in which the “Startupper of the Year by Total” contest will be held, a jury of businesspeople led by a chairman will be created. It will have at least 10 members, including the CEOs of Total’s affiliates in the country.
  • The jury will include managers from national and international companies drawn from a wide variety of business sectors (banking, finance, industry, service, etc.), representatives of public and semipublic organizations, officials from institutions, officials from national and international organizations and/or recognized experts and analysts. The jury will receive, evaluate and select the projects.

ROLE

  • On completion of the pre-selection stage, the jury in each of the 34 countries will select up to 10 finalists of the best projects submitted.
  • The finalists will then be invited to present their project orally to the jury, which will select up to three winners.

Olam scholarships: creating a generation of change catalysts for Sub Saharan Africa

Olam International is a global agri-business listed and headquartered in Singapore, growing, sourcing and processing food ingredients and industrial raw materials such as coffee, cocoa, cashew and cotton for over 13,800 customers, including Nestle, Unilever and Mars.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Olam has launched a postgraduate scholarship programme for nationals of Sub-Saharan Africa committed to catalysing change in their home country during their career.  The four internationally acclaimed universities are: Harvard Business School, The London School of Economics and Political Science, INSEAD Business School and Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

The OLAM Scholarship programme is aimed at fostering business management, leadership and governance across the continent by supporting aspiring and capable students to pursue higher education in an esteemed international institution. Through the scholarships and Olam mentoring, olam hopes to play its part in creating a generation of leaders who will contribute towards economic transformation, provide good governance, and act as change agents in their home country.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Candidates must be nationals of Sub-Saharan Africa regardless of their current country of residence, and will need to demonstrate: academic achievement and promise; teamwork as well as personal ownership to deliver; leadership potential and entrepreneurial spirit; and a commitment to contributing to their country or region at the end of the course.
  • All applications will be assessed on merit by the individual partner universities.

The DREAM Project (with financial support granted by the European Commission through the Erasmus Mundus Programme) grants scholarships to students from ACP countries and staff members to undertake a mobility period, or full degree, in some of the best universities in Europe.

Scholarships are available for master and doctorate students and also for staff members (academic and administrative) and include a monthly allowance, travel, insurance and tuition fees.

  • Must have not benefited in the past from an Erasmus Mundus scholarship for the same type of mobility;
  • Must have sufficient knowledge of the language of the courses or of one of the languages currently spoken in the hosting countries;
  • Must respect the specific and additional criteria applicable to each type of mobility (master, doctorate, academic and administrative staff).

  • Both for-profit and non-for profits enterprises
  • No requirement to already have a written business plan

  • Your project/enterprises can be scaled and replicated to benefit more people

Program Structure:

  • The first physical part of the program will be held in Stockholm, during April 11-29, 2016. During this time SE Forum will provide the participants with workshops, lectures, mentorship and individual coaching which will focus on assessing and understanding the business opportunities and drivers .
  • The second physical part of the program takes place during September 5-23, 2016. The participants then travel back to Stockholm to spend another three weeks together.
  • During this time they will meet with their mentors, learn from each other’s experience and participate in workshops and coaching sessions built around business executions, all to ensure that they leave Stockholm with the skills and confidence required to scale up their social enterprises in the future.

2016 Austrian Government Scholarships for Foreign Students to study in Austria.

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW) and the European Union invites applications from international  students for the 2016 Scholarship of the Scholarship Foundation of the Republic of Austria for Undergraduates, Graduates and Postgraduates.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eligible for application are
– descendents of forced labourers (regardless of their country of origin)
– or people coming from countries that have suffered exceptionally from the Nazi regime, especially from the recruitment of forced labourers.

Students meeting the above mentioned criteria can apply to pursue research
– on their diploma or master thesis
– or their dissertation.
No scholarships are awarded for Bachelor-, Master- or Doctoral/PhD studies pursued in Austria, summer courses, language courses, clinical traineeships or internships.

Applicants must not have studied/pursued research/pursued academic work in Austria in the last six months before taking up the grant.

Scholarship Worth:

The quota depends on the budget Grant benefit paid:
1) monthly scholarship instalment: 940 EUR
2) accident and health insurance: if necessary, the OeAD (Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research) will effect an accident and health insurance.
The costs for the insurance have to be covered from the scholarship.
3) The OeAD provides scholarship holders with accommodation (student dormitory or apartment). Monthly costs: 220 to 470 EUR (depending on the level of comfort requested by the scholarship holder).
The scholarship holder has to pay an administrative fee of 18 EUR/month to the OeAD for the provision of accommodation. The costs for the accommodation have to be covered from the scholarship.
4) Applicants from countries which are neither members of the EU nor members of EFTA, EEA or OECD can be granted a travel allowance. The lump sum depends on the country of origin.

2016/2017 ARES Belgian Government Scholarships for Young Professionals from Developing Countries – Study in Belgium.

Within the framework of the Belgian policy for development cooperation, the Minister for Development Cooperation and the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation entrust the Belgian Higher Education Institutions with the preparation of Postgraduate Programmes (Advanced Masters) and Training Programmes that are specifically oriented towards young professionals from developing countries.

International Courses and Training Programmes are part of the global study programmes of the Higher Education Institutions. They are open to all students who satisfy the conditions of qualification, but aim at proposing training units that distinguish themselves by their openness towards specific development issues.

Within the programme for International Courses and Training Programmes 2016-2017, ARES grants 130 scholarships for participation into the masters and 67 scholarships for participation into the training programmes.

Eligibility Requirements:

The following criteria will apply for the selection of holders of scholarships:

  1. Only applicants originating in developing countries, qualify for selection. To be eligible, candidates must reside and work in their country at the time of the introduction of the file.
  2. Only the nationals of the following countries are authorized to postulate with the scholarships: Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, Haïti, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Peru, Philippines, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Vietnam.
  3. At the beginning of the programme, candidates must be less than 40 years old for courses, and less than 45 years old for training programmes.
  4. Candidates must be holders of a degree that is comparable to a Belgian University graduate degree (“licence”). However, for certain programmes different rules of admissibility may be defined, and these are specified hereafter, where appropriate.
  5. Candidates must show professional experience of at least two years upon termination of their studies. Where candidates are holders of a postgraduate degree delivered by an university of an industrial country, they must show professional experience of at least three years upon termination of their studies.
  6. Candidates must have a good knowledge of written and spoken French; for programmes organised in another language, good knowledge, in writing and speaking, of this language, is required. Moreover, the candidate will be asked to commit himself to study French in order to be able to participate in daily life in Belgium.
  7. Candidates are not allowed to apply for more than one programme.

Applicants must not first obtain admission to one of the French-speaking universities of Belgium in order to apply for grants from ARES.

The Landmark Development Initiative (LDI) Africa Emerging Institutions Fellowship Program (EIFP) provides hands-on service opportunities for global young business and development leaders at Africa’s leading profit and nonprofit firms. Russell E. Train Fellowships support individuals pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in conservation. Each year, WWF supports committed conservationists from target countries to receive financial support for their studies and field research.

Applicants can apply to attend any university around the world and must return to their home countries to work in conservation for at least two years after completing their degree.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To be eligible for a Train Fellowship, you must meet the following criteria. Please note that eligibility criteria can vary by competition. Please also refer to specific competition guidelines to ensure you are eligible.

  • You must be a citizen and legal permanent resident of an eligible country.
  • You must have at least two years of conservation-related work or research experience.
  • You must have a demonstrated commitment to working in conservation in an eligible country.
  • Your research or academic program must address one of the focus areas listed in the guidelines.
  • You must be enrolled in, admitted to, or have applied to a master’s or PhD program anywhere in the world.
  • You must plan to begin your studies no later than January 2017.
  • You must commit to working for at least two years in your home country after the completion of your degree.
  • You must not have received a Train Fellowship or Scholarship in the past. Professional Development Grant recipients are eligible to apply.
  • You must notify EFN if you are a WWF employee, consultant, or previous EFN grant recipient.
  • You must submit all required documents by the application deadline (March 1, 2016).

ELECTION PROCESS

Train Fellows are selected through a competitive, merit-based process. An independent, interdisciplinary panel of experts is convened in each country to review applications and to identify the top candidates based on the following criteria:

  • Professional qualifications as evidenced by previous and current conservation-related positions, references from colleagues in the field, publications, and other sources.
  • Demonstrated leadership through involvement in community and volunteer activities, the workplace, local and national government, and other areas.
  • Prior academic achievement as shown by grades, academic awards, and references from professors.
  • Motivation and commitment to contribute to conservation in a participating country and to share what is learned with others in their field and in their home communities.
  • Potential impact of proposed study/research on conservation efforts in the home country or region.

YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa which is part of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative and one of the four regional hubs that provides transformational learning and improved leadership skills to young Africans. Located at Kenyatta University, in Nairobi, Kenya, the Center is more than a location for learning or a venue for collaboration; it is a philosophy, a forward-leaning culture of diversity that invites dreaming and thinking differently to define and realize one’s potential. Eligibility:

Competition for the YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa is merit-based and open to young East African leaders who meet the following criteria:

  • Are 18 to 35 years of age at the time of application submission,
  • Are citizens and residents of one of the following countries: Burundi, Central African Republic. Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda,
  • Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

Selection Criteria

Selection for participation in the YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa will be conducted as a merit-based, open competition. All eligible applications will be reviewed by a selection panel. Chosen semi-finalists will then be interviewed before a final selection is made and an invitation to join the program is issued.

Selection panels will use the following criteria to evaluate applications:

  • A demonstrated leadership in public service, business and entrepreneurship, or civic engagement.
  • Active engagement in public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
  • The ability to work cooperatively in diverse groups and respect the opinions of others.
  • Strong social and communication skills.
  • An energetic, positive attitude.
  • A demonstrated knowledge, interest, and professional experience in the sector/track selected, and
  • A commitment to apply leadership skills and training to benefit your country and/or community after the program.

Benefits:
  • The participants immerse themselves in a 12-week course of study, three weeks of residential learning on-site at the Center in Nairobi;

2016 Hague Academy Talent of Governance Scholarship Programme in Netherland (Fully Funded)

In many parts of the world, local civil servants work under difficult circumstances. The communities for which they work are characterised by widespread poverty, a lack of basic services, high unemployment rates and environmental challenges. Moreover, their organisations often lack qualified staff and financial resources needed to deal with these challenges.

Still there are many young, ambitious civil servants that strive for better services and the development of their local communities. Talent for Governance supports them by providing opportunities for knowledge exchange and training so that they can develop their skills and realise their ambitions.

With a Talent for Governance scholarship, young talents at the local level increase their practical knowledge on topics such as management of waste or water, local economic development, municipal service delivery, citizen participation and accountability, fiscal decentralisation and local taxes, climate change and resilience, integrity and anti-corruption.

Eligibility:

Young civil servants working for local government in a developing country can apply for the Talent for Governance programme. They must have a strong motivation and a concrete project or idea to improve the performance of the organisation and create better services for their community.

Application is possible if you: work for a local government (not an NGO or private enterprise);

  • work in one of the countries listed on the DAC country list;
  • be 37 years of age or younger when you apply;
  • have at least two years of work experience in local governance and prove your commitment to
  • work there for at least two years more;
  • speak and understand the English language well (all programmes are in English);
  • be able to write down and orally defend your motivation for and relevance of the specific programme;
  • be able to identify an issue/project as a real life case within the theme of the programme for which you will write a Back Home Action Plan during the Talent programme;
  • have written support of your employer to participate in the programme and to implement the Back Home Action Plan when you return home.

Yale World Fellows is an international fellowship program at Yale University for mid-career emerging leaders who have distinguished themselves in their profession, discipline, or geographic region. Each year, between fifteen and twenty participants, known as World Fellows, reside at Yale for the fall academic term.

Yale World Fellows brings rising stars from across disciplines and borders for an intense and unpredictable mash-up of ideas, world views and experiences. Applications to the Yale World Fellows Program are accepted from across sectors and around the world.  Each class of Fellows is a unique group, geographically balanced, and representative of a wide range of professions, talents, and perspectives.

During the four month program (from mid-August to mid-December), Yale World Fellows are fully immersed in the University community. They share their expertise and ideas in classes and seminars across Yale and New Haven. While most activities take place on campus and in the New Haven community, the program this year includes trips to New York City and Washington, DC and an off-site retreat.

Eligbility

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • be in the mid-career stage Fellows are at least five, and typically not more than twenty, years into their careers, with demonstrated work accomplishments, and a clear indication of future contributions and excellence.  The average age of a World Fellow is 39, though there is no minimum or maximum age limit.
  • be fluent in English An excellent command of the English language is essential.
  • be a citizen of a country other than the United States  While dual citizens are eligible, preference is given to candidates whose work is focused outside the US.

Selection criteria include:

  • An established record of extraordinary achievement and integrity;
  • Commitment to engagement in crucial issues and to making a difference at the national or international level;
  • Promise of a future career of leadership and notable impact;
  • Special capacity for critical, creative, entrepreneurial, and strategic thinking;
  • Likelihood to benefit from participation in the Program and to contribute to global understanding at Yale;
  • Commitment to a rigorous program of activities, to full-time residence at Yale for the entire duration of the program, and to mentoring students and speaking frequently on campus

Encouraged by the success of the previous Africa-Europe Training Courses and the demand for capacity building opportunities expressed by youth leaders in the Africa-Europe Youth Co-operation, the North-South Centre will run the 11th edition of this programme. The course is organised in co-operation with the European Youth Forum, the Pan-African Youth Union and the Network of International Youth Organisations in Africa.
After last editions of the course held in Tarrafal, Cape Verde (2002, 2009); Mollina, Spain (2004); Coimbra, Portugal (2005, 2008) Almada, Portugal (2006), Polokwane, South Africa (2010) Mindelo, Cape Verde (2012, 2013) and Nairobi, Kenya (2014) this 11th Africa-Europe Training Course will be held 8 – 15 November 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya.
During the course, participants will develop competences and tools to strengthen their political participation in the context of the Africa-EU Strategic Partnership and develop competences for the capacity-building of their organisations as civil society actors in the development process.

The 11th AFRICA-EUROPE Training Course for Youth Organisations to be held between 8 November and 15 November 2015 Nairobi, Kenya   In the framework of the 7th African University on Youth and Development. 

The training course aims to:

  • strengthen the role of youth organisations as civil society actors and enable youth to organise and take action;
  • reinforce its political participation in Africa-Europe co-operation;
  • promote the global citizenship of young people in Europe and Africa.

The week-long course can accommodate up to 20 participants. Active participation and in-depth reflection are key features of the course. Participants will compare their approaches to youth work and youth participation, engaging in the implementation and evaluation of the programme with the team of trainers.
This Training Course is an opportunity given to youth leaders from Africa and Europe to share, better understand and integrate the objectives set at the international level in their work and contribute to their achievement. Some of these objectives (mentioned above) inscribed in the Africa-EU Strategic Partnership, help enable youth to take an active part in these strategies at the national and regional level and be further equipped to participate.

Profile of Participants

The participants in this course are representatives of youth organisations in Europe and Africa. European and African national and international youth organisations are invited to propose candidates for this course. The selection will be carried out by the North-South Centre in consultation with partners of the training course.

Approximately 50% of the participants in this course will come from youth organisations in Europe; the other half will come from youth organisations in Africa. Gender balance will be ensured in the selection process of the participants, as well as the balance between the type and/or nature of organisations.

Concerning participants and their profile:

  • should be a key multiplier playing an active role within a youth organisation, network or service at national or regional level, and plan to continue this work in the near future;
  • seeking gender balance;
  • diverse social and geographical background (including disadvantaged and minority groups);
  • aged between 18 and 30;
  • have already some qualification or experience in terms of international youth work;
  • be committed to attend the full duration of the course and be supported by a youth organisation or service;
  • be able to present the context of their work, their way of tackling problems, the challenges they meet;
  • be able to work and communicate in English/French.

Benefits:

  •  The North-South Centre will do its best to issue a pre-paid ticket. In exceptional cases, participants might advance the booking of the international flight and reimbursement will be done fully or in an agreed amount.
  • It is expected that participants/background organisation support the expenses related with local transport in the home country, as well as visa and necessary vaccination costs.
  • The board and lodging for the full duration of the training course is covered by the North-South Centre (accommodation and meals). Participants will be accommodated in double/triple rooms. 
  • There is no participation fee for this training course.

Application Process:

  • All candidates fulfilling the criteria and wanting to participate should send the enclosed application form to [email protected] by the 12th of October 23.59pm (GMT+1) 2015.
  • A recommendation letter from the organisation clearly stating the added value and possible follow-up of the participation of the applicant in the training course should be sent (scan version) in the same email of the application form. This letter should be signed and stamped. 
  • The application form and recommendation letter are necessary to consider the application eligible.
  • All applicants should receive a confirmation email of reception of documents within 5 working days after the submission of the application. If you do not receive this confirmation, please contact us.

The Global Fellowship is Echoing Greens‘ twenty-seven-year-old program for smart leaders who are deeply connected to the needs and potential solutions that may work best for their communities. Any emerging social entrepreneur from any part of the world working to disrupt the status quo may apply.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for an Echoing Green Fellowship, the applicant must be:
  • Over 18 years old
  • Fluent in English
  • Able to commit a full 35 hour work week to their organization.
In order to be eligible for an Echoing Green Fellowship, the organization must be:
  • The original idea of the applicant(s)
  • In its start-up phase, usually within the first two years of operation
  • Independent and autonomous
The following types of organizations are not eligible to apply:
  • Students, scholarships, or research projects
  • Lobbying or faith-based organizations
  • Existing organizations which have grown past their start-up phase

Worth:

The Fellowships are awarded annually to individuals or partners who receive:

  • A stipend of $80,000 for individuals (or $90,000 for two-person partnerships) paid in four equal installments over two years
  • A health insurance stipend
  • A yearly professional development stipend
  • Leadership development and networking gatherings
  • Access to technical support and pro bono partnerships to help grow their organization and a dedicated Echoing Green portfolio manager
  • A community of like-minded social entrepreneurs, public service leaders, and industry leaders including the Echoing Green network of more than 600 Fellows working in over sixty countries all over the world.

Innovation is an important element of the Echoing Green Fellowship. What does Echoing Green mean by innovation?

  • An innovative idea is novel, it’s often untried, and it challenges the assumptions made by previous organizations working in the field.
  • Innovative ideas can build upon or make improvements to an existing model, or they can create their own unique solutions which have never been tried before.
  • Organizations utilizing a pre-existing model would benefit from elements of innovation. For example, bringing a traditional model to new locations, communities, or organizations which they have not been historically related to.
  • Innovative ideas bring about dramatic change, not just incremental change. Tell us how your approach will lead to increased change over other models or ideas.

The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS) awards up to six four-month start-up scholarships to international MA graduates who would like to pursue a doctoral degree in history, sociology, anthropology, or political science at the BGHS. Recipients receive the opportunity to prepare a persuasive proposal for a dissertation project. Subsequently, they may apply for the doctoral degree programme at the BGHS and/or for scholarships, doctoral positions and funding programmes in Germany or worldwide.

Requirements

  • Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in sociology, history, political science, social anthropology or gender studies; applications from related disciplines are welcome.
  • Graduates from abroad who wish to pursue a doctoral degree in history, sociology, anthropology or political science may apply for a start-up scholarship.
  • Applications from pre-doctoral researchers .
  • Applicants should speak either German or English fluently.
  • Neither German nationals nor foreigners with a tertiary education from a German university may apply (Bildungsinländer/innen).
  • The start-up scholarships are meant to further networking with scientists at the BGHS, therefore no prolonged archival or research trips should take place during this period.

Scholarship Worth:

  • The scholarships will be awarded for the Summer Term of each year (1 April until 31 July) and include a stipend of EUR 1,200 per month. This amount will be supplemented by an allowance for children if applicable.
  • Upon application, travel costs can also be covered by the Graduate School. Moreover, the BGHS will offer a study programme tailored to the particular needs of international MA graduates.
  • Scholarship holders will participate in workshops on German academia as well as on writing a project description and will be supported intensively in finding a funding for their research project.

2017 United States of America (USA) Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV – 2017) – Live and Work in USA.

The congressionally mandated Diversity Immigrant Visa Program is administered annually by the Department of State. Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) provides for a class of immigrants known as “diversity immigrants” from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. For Fiscal Year 2017, 50,000 Diversity Visas (DVs) will be available. There is no cost to register for the DV program.
Applicants who are selected in the program (“selectees”) must meet simple, but strict, eligibility requirements in order to qualify for a diversity visa. Selectees are chosen through a randomized computer drawing. Diversity visas are distributed among six geographic regions and no single country may receive more than seven percent of the available DVs in any one year.
For DV-2017, natives of the following countries are not eligible to apply, because more than 50,000 natives of these countries immigrated to the United States in the previous five years:
  • Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico,Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam.
  • Persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR,and Taiwan are eligible
Eligibility
  • Requirement #1: Individuals born in countries whose natives qualify may be eligible to enter.
  • If you were not born in an eligible country, there are two other ways you
    might be able to qualify.
  • Was your spouse born in a country whose natives are eligible? If yes, you can claim your
    spouse’s country of birth—provided that both you and your spouse are named on the selected entry, are issued diversity visas, and enter the United States simultaneously.
  • Were you born in a country whose natives are ineligible, but in which neither of your parents was born or legally resident at the time of your birth? If yes, you may claim

  • Requirement #2: Each DV applicant must meet the education/work experience requirement of the DV program by having either:
  • at least a high school education or its equivalent, defined as successful completion of a 12-year course of formal elementary and secondary education; OR

    O*Net Online database will be used to determine qualifying work experience.

The Young African Leadership Initiative 2016 = Six-week leadership and Mentoring Program plus a chance to interact with Pres. Barack

The 2016 YALI Fellowship will train 1,000 young African leaders across three tracks, which include business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership and public management. The 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship is a six-weeks in-depth academic and leadership training at 20 top American universities.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, begun in 2014, is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. The Fellowship provides 1,000 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for professional development after they return home.

In the summer of 2016, the Mandela Washington Fellowship will bring 1,000 young African leaders to the United States for academic coursework and leadership training and will create unique opportunities in Africa for Fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organizations, communities, and countries.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, socio-economic status, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is open to young African leaders who meet the following criteria:

  • Are between the ages of 25 and 35 at the time of application submission, although exceptional applicants younger than 25 will be considered.
  • Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
  • Are eligible to receive a United States J-1 visa.
  • Are proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Selection Process

  • The Mandela Washington Fellowship is conducted as a merit-based open competition. After the deadline, all eligible applications will be reviewed by a selection panel.
  • Chosen semifinalists will be interviewed by the U.S. embassies or consulates in their home countries.
  • If selected for an interview, applicants must provide a copy of their passport (if available) or other government-issued photo identification to verify eligibility.

The UNFPA Internship Programme offers a small group of outstanding students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNFPA operations. It is designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of UNFPA work.

Applicants should have expressed interest in the field of development; ability to adapt to new environments and work with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Interns work under the supervision of a staff member at UNFPA. The background of the interns is matched with the needs of the organization.

Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates for the internship programme are selected on a competitive basis. The profiles of the interns are matched with the needs of the organization. The following qualifications are required for consideration:

• Students should be enrolled in an advanced degree programme or have recently graduated;
• Students must have written and spoken proficiency in English; fluency in French, Spanish or Arabic is an asset.

Logistics:

  • Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA.
  • The costs associated with an intern’s participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements.
  • In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship.

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world.

Each year,  the Clinton Global Initiative University hosts a meeting where students, university representatives, topic experts, and celebrities come together to discuss and develop innovative solutions to pressing global challenges.

President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will host the ninth annual CGI U meeting from April 1-3, 2016 at the University of California, Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay Area. More than $750,000 in funding will be available to select CGI U 2016 students through the University Network and other opportunities to help them turn their ideas into action.

Requirements:

  • Students must be 18 years of age or older and enrolled in an institution of higher education at the time of the CGI U meeting in order to apply.
  • To be considered for admission, all applicants are required to design a Commitment to Action in one of CGI U’s five focus areas: Education, Environment and Climate Change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health. All invited attendees will be notified by late December 2015.

Application

Students interested in attending CGI U can apply as either an individual or a group.

Individual: A student may apply to attend CGI U as an individual. This student makes a Commitment to Action that he or she will carry out individually, or applies to attend CGI U as the sole representative of a larger organization.

Group: Up to three students may apply to attend CGI U as a group. These students collaborate on a Commitment to Action and apply to attend the meeting together to represent their project or initiative.

The group must appoint a group leader to fill out the first part of the CGI U application (which includes the Commitment to Action), and the additional group members will receive emails from CGI U with instructions on how to complete their portions of the application. It is the responsibility of the group leader to ensure that all group members complete their portions of the application

The Ericsson Innovation Awards 2016 is an open competition for students all around the world.

The Ericsson Innovation Awards are a global competition that gives students the opportunity to develop innovative ICT ideas in collaboration with Ericsson experts.

The theme for EIA 2016 is the future of city life. The competition is therefore focused on ideas that use ICT to improve the quality of urban life and to ensure that tomorrow’s cities are creative, connected and sustainable places to live and work.

This year the competition is all about cities. Today, more people live in cities than in rural areas, and by 2050, about 70 percent of the world’s population is expected to reside in urban areas. Ensuring that our cities are creative, connected and sustainable is a major challenge but also an opportunity to improve the lives of billions of people along with the health and future of the planet itself. What is your next big idea?

 Requirements:

  • EIA 2016 is open to teams of two to four students.

  • After registration closes on November 30, 2015, ten semi-finalists will be announced on December 18, 2015.

  • Nine of the semi-finalists will be selected by an Ericsson jury, with the remaining place assigned by a public vote.

  • The ten teams will each work with two selected Ericsson experts to develop a minimum viable product (MVP).

  • Four teams will be chosen by the jury to participate in the EIA 2016 grand final in 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Benefits:

  • The winning team will receive a cash prize of EUR 25,000, with a second-place prize of EUR 15,000 and two runners-up prizes of EUR 1,000 each.
  • Career-enhancing incentives are also on offer: all participants will be invited to apply for Ericsson opportunities, and semi-finalists will be interviewed for internship or other positions.

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and The Guardian are launching the Efua Dorkenoo Pan African Award for journalists reporting on FGM across Africa. The award is intended to increase media awareness and engagement on FGM within community, national and regional media outlets and recognize and encourage outstanding efforts of journalists throughout Africa.
Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for the competition, the candidate must be:

  • A professional journalist working in or for print press (daily, weekly, monthly), radio or TV in Africa or a freelancer with proof of publication of commissioned material. Contest will be limited to journalists working for Africa-based news outlets
  • A national of an African country

Candidates can submit one of the following:

  • Print story, not exceeding 2,000 words
  • Radio report, from 4 to 15 minutes
  • TV report, from 4 to 15 minutes

Award:

  • The overall winner will receive one month of training at the FGM Multimedia and Investigations Unit at The Guardian in London.
  • All trip and living costs will be covered by the organizers.

Entries will be judged based on:

  • Compliance with above eligibility, topic and format conditions
  • Originality/creativity

The Community Solutions Program is a professional development program for the best and brightest global community leaders working in Transparency & Accountability, Tolerance & Conflict Resolution, Environmental Issues, and Women & Gender Issues.

Program Activities
Four-month U.S. Fellowship: Community Solutions leaders work in community-based, non-profit organizations or government offices across the U.S. where they work in partnership with American counterparts to address local issues.
Community Leadership Institute (CLI): Community Solutions leaders develop leadership and organizational management skills through online courses and in-person training that complement their community placements.

Follow-on Projects: Community Solutions leaders develop follow-on community projects in partnership with their U.S. hosts. Follow-on projects will be completed after leaders return to their home countries.

2016 African Leaders of Tomorrow (ALT) Scholarship Program for study in Canada (Fully Funded)

The African Leaders of Tomorrow (ALT) Scholarship Program commemorates the late Nelson Mandela’s commitment to social justice and equity by supporting young African professionals to become leaders in public policy and administration.

The ALT Scholarship Program will grant scholarships to young African women and men to pursue a Master’s degree in public administration, public policy or public finances. Scholarships will be awarded based on merit to young professionals from sub-Saharan Africa. The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) in collaboration with The Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC) will implement the ALT Scholarship Program with the objective of contributing to a strong and effective public sector in sub-Saharan Africa.  Special consideration will be given to equitable representation across the continent and to the advancement of women leaders.

This program is undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD), and The MasterCard Foundation.

The ALT Scholarship Program has two components:

  • An academic component where the recipient of the scholarship will complete a one to two year Master’s level program in public administration, public policy or public finance at a Canadian university;
  • A professional development component where the recipient of the scholarship will complete a comprehensive professional development plan which will include the development of a case study focusing on their home country, as well as exposure to Canadian knowledge, innovation and best practices in public administration and policy through mentoring, webinars and networking events.

Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates must meet all the eligibility requirements:

  • Be a citizen and resident of sub-Saharan Africa
  • Be between 22 and 35 years old (at the beginning of the study program)
  • Have completed an undergraduate university degree (4 years of university) with a minimum average of B (75%)
  • Have two to five years of work experience in the public sector, civil society sector or research and academic institutions in Africa
  • Be fluent in  French or English
  • Meet all the academic requirements of the study program of choice

Eligibility restrictions 

  • Candidates who have obtained Canadian citizenship, who are permanent residents or who have applied for permanent residency in Canada are not eligible.
  • Candidates who are already enrolled in a degree or any program of study at a Canadian university are not eligible.

Scholarship Worth:

The ALT scholarship includes:

  • Return airfare (at the beginning and at the end of the program)
  • Tuition fees
  • Monthly living allowances and one time installation allowance
  • Fixed allowance to cover purchase of books and attend conferences in Canada
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Fees for study permit

Application Process:

Candidates are required to fill out an electronic application form and submit the following documents to be eligible:

  • A CV or resume
  • All official transcripts and diplomas for every university programs completed or in progress (with official translation if the transcripts are not in English or French)
  • An abstract for a case study
  • A 500 to 750 word letter of intent to explain why they want to study in public administration and how they will use the training upon their return to their country.
  • Three reference letters (two academic and one professional). If the candidate is currently employed, one of the support letters should be from their employer.
  • A copy or their valid passport or a copy of the application form for a passport if the candidate does not have a valid passport
  • A copy of the result of the language test if the candidate has never studied in the language of instruction (TOEFL, Alliance française)
