The International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP) calls for nominations for the ICIP Peace in Progress Award 2015. This award aims to reward and publicly recognize individuals, organizations or institutions that have made a significant contribution toward promotingand fostering peace.
The ICIP Award, to be granted on an annual basis, aims to reward those individuals, organizations or institutions that throughout their existence have had an important role in building and promoting peace, encouraging values and practices of a culture of peace, nonviolence, human security, disarmament or the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Award
  • The ICIP Peace in Progress Award 2015 consists of an honorary distinction, public recognition, a sculpture created by Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and a 4,000€ reward.
Potential beneficiaries
• Eligible for this Award are those individuals, public or private non- profit organizations or institutions from around the world that throughout their actions and career have made an outstanding contribution to the construction and promotion of peace.
No awards will be awarded posthumously.
Nominations
• Nominations may be submitted by individuals, public or private non-profit organizations or institutions with an outstanding role in the field of the promotion and fostering of peace.
Requirements
• Nominations must be accompanied by the following documentation:
– Dully completed nomination form, as referred to above.
– Copy of the agreement of the governing body of the organization that is presenting a nomination, approving the presentation of the nomination.
– Profile or biography of the proposed individual, organization or institution (if you deem it necessary to provide additional details).
– Declaration of the nominee expressing agreement to participate in the competition for the ICIP Award.
• If deemed necessary, one may submit letters of support in favour of the individual, organization or institution proposed.

2015 VISAGE Photography Competition on Gender Equality.

Application Deadline:

Students are invited to submit photographs showing positive examples of gender equality.  Submissions can be humorous or serious. But they should stick to the goal of raising awareness among students. The competition will be promoted through social media and promotional material around the University campus.

VISAGE plan to maximize exposure and participation of the competition through social media. The best submissions will be selected via a Website vote based on the number of ‘likes’ received. These will be displayed at the exhibition where all attendees will be able to vote on their favorite. Prizes will be awarded for the three most popular photographs.

Prizes

  • The first prize winners will be awarded camera with a certificate of appreciation and a Visage membership.
  • The 25 best photographs will displayed at the venue of the University of Vienna on the 30th June 2015.
  • Pictures will also be posted in a photo gallery at www.visage-project.com and other social media channels.

Eligibility

  • The competition is open to every student over the age of 18, from every part of the world.

Requirements

  • Please submit your photographs in high-resolution JPEG format so that they can be printed in high quality.
  • The photograph must not contain inappropriate materials.

  • Participants can submit up to two digital black and white or colour photographs.

The Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) is calling for distinguished African researchers to conduct research in the fields of Political Studies, Economics and Social Sciences.

Eligibility Requirements:
Researchers must:
· Have at least a Master’s degree in relevant fields of study
· Have published work in academic journals
· Be able to write and fluently present in English
· Have a demonstrated research interest in governance in Africa, African youth or African economies
· Have an extensive, accessible network across Africa
· Be available to commence work immediately

2015 United Nations OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme – Human Right Training in Geneva Switzerland (Fully Funded & All Expense Paid)

The Indigenous Fellowship Programme (IFP) is a comprehensive human rights training programme that was established by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the context of the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (1995-2004).

The programme contributes to build the capacity and expertise of indigenous representatives on the UN system and mechanisms dealing with human rights in general and indigenous issues in particular, so they are in a better position to protect and promote the rights of their communities at the international level.

Since the launch of the training programme in 1997, more than 300 indigenous men and women from all over the world have been trained. They provided human rights training to many more in their communities.

The curriculum is also adjusted as per language component and is currently organized as follows:

  • English and French : the training only takes place in Geneva and lasts four weeks;
  • Spanish: organized in collaboration with the University of Deusto (UD) in Bilbao, Spain, the programme is composed of a two-month course at the UD, followed by four weeks of training at the OHCHR in Geneva;
  • Russian : organized in collaboration with the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (PFUR) in Moscow, Russian Federation, the programme consists of a one-month course at the PFUR, followed by four weeks of training at the OHCHR in Geneva

The Training:

  • The IFP is accessible in four different languages: English, French, Spanish and Russian.
  • The IFP is held annually and fellows from the 4 language components of the programme are trained together with simultaneous interpretation during 4 to 5 weeks in Geneva.
  • The date of the training programme usually coincides with the annual meeting of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (June/July), thus allowing the fellows to participate more actively in that Mechanism.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. The candidate must be indigenous (non-indigenous persons will not be taken into consideration, even if they have close links with indigenous communities and/or organizations).
  2. Age should not be a limitation to participation in the programme.
  3. Formal education should not be a limitation to participation in the IFP given the socio-economic barriers confronted by many indigenous peoples that limit access to formal educational institutions.
  4. Candidates should agree to train other indigenous persons after the return to their respective communities/organizations.
  5. The candidate should be proposed and his/her candidacy supported by his/her indigenous organization and/or community. It is desirable that the sponsoring organization has a firm constituency or membership and that it is representative.
  6. The candidate should have a good working knowledge of the language, in which the programme is imparted.

Benefits

  • The selected candidates are entitled to a return flight ticket, living expenses and basic health insurance for the duration of the training.

African Women’s Development Fund 2015 ‘Writing for Social Change Workshop for African Women, Uganda (Fully Funded).

The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) in collaboration with FEMRITE – Uganda Women Writers Association, invites African women writers and journalists to apply for the Writing for Social Change Workshop 2015. This 10-day writing workshop, will be taking place in Uganda from July 27 to August 5, 2015.

The workshop will be facilitated by veteran BBC journalist and media expert Elizabeth Ohene from Ghana and award-winning writer Yewande Omotoso, from Nigeria/South Africa/Barbados.

This workshop is targeted at women writers, journalists and activists who wish to step-up their involvement in highlighting issues around women’s rights and social justice.

  • Participants will be expected to read widely from assigned selected texts, and to complete daily writing exercises. After the workshop, the participants are expected to use the knowledge acquired to write widely about social justice issues in and beyond their communities.

This workshop is part of AWDF’s efforts to amplify African women’s voices and is aimed at creating a network that will enable participants to place their articles and stories in a range of local, regional and international media.

Priority will be given to interested women journalists who wish to actively engage in women’s activism – AWDF are expecting at least 50% of the writers selected for this workshop to be full-time journalists.

AWDF will also include women from AWDF’s existing grantee organisations, and within our partner networks.

Benefits:

  • Full accommodation, meals and a partial travel grant will be provided to all successful applicants.
  • All applicants will be expected to be present for the ten-day duration of the workshop.
  • A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed by successful applicants to enable smooth running of the workshop.

Women Deliver’s conferences are the world’s largest global convenings to focus on the health, rights and well-being of girls and women. Building on the successes of Women Deliver’s three previous global gatherings—in London in 2007, in Washington in 2010 and in Kuala Lumpur in 2013—the 2016 Conference will bring together world leaders, advocates, policymakers, journalists, young people, researchers and leaders of the private sector and civil society to showcase what it means and how it works when women and girls become the focus of development efforts.

The conference, which will be held in Copenhagen from 16–19 May 2016, will be the largest gathering on girls’ and women’s health, rights, and wellbeing for more than a decade, and one of the first major global conferences following the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

Women Deliver is currently offering two opportunities to apply for a scholarship to attend the Women Deliver 2016 Conference. They are:

Scholarships for People 30 and Older

Scholarships for people 30 and older to attend the Women Deliver 2016 Conference are awarded to stand-out advocates who have proven their commitment to advancing the health, rights, and well-being of girls and women in their community and around the world. This opportunity includes:

  • A scholarship to attend the Women Deliver 2016 Conference on 16-19 May 2016 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • A chance to connect with a wide range of policymakers, donors, activists, and journalists from the highest levels to the grassroots to review progress, discuss challenges, and push for new and ambitious commitments toward improving the lives of girls and women.

Media participation at the Women Deliver conference provides journalists with opportunities to interact with high-level attendees and cover research findings presented by key authorities in the field. The opportunity includes:

A full scholarship to the Women Deliver 2016 Conference will include:

  • Conference registration
  • Roundtrip economy class airline travel between your home airport and Copenhagen, Denmark, which will be arranged by Women Deliver’s travel provider
  • Reimbursement of the fees to acquire a new visa as required to enter Denmark (In order to obtain reimbursement, you will be required to present a receipt at the conference. Women Deliver will not pay any fees associated with obtaining new passports or renewing expired passports.)
  • $50 for ground transportation to and from the airport within your home country and round trip ground transportation between the Copenhagen airport and your hotel (arrangements will be made by Women Deliver and will require the use of mass transportation)
  • Overnight accommodations at a hotel selected by Women Deliver in Copenhagen for the duration of the conference
  • $50 per diem, per night stayed at the hotel to attend the conference (per diems will not include any extended stays)

Please note that a passport and visa may be needed to enter Denmark. Women Deliver will cover the costs of obtaining the visa and provide supporting documentation, if needed.

2015 Mauritius-Africa Scholarships for Africans to study in Mauritius.

The Government of Mauritius is offering scholarships to 50 students from African States for full time undergraduate studies at any public tertiary education institution duly registered with the Tertiary Education Commission.
The Scholarship will cover a grant of up to MUR 100,000 per academic year for the duration of the programme to each student to cover costs of university fees and charges, economy class air fare from and to the country of origin of the student by the most economical route at the start and end of the studies, and a monthly stipend of MUR 8,300 for subsistence allowance.
Scholarship Worth:The Scholarship will cover:(i) a monthly living allowance of MUR 8,300,
(ii) tuition fees up to MUR 100,000 yearly , and
(iii) Student airfare (economy class) by the most economical route to and from Mauritius at the start and the end of the studies
Eligibility Requirements:

  • Candidates must have secured a conditional offer for an on-campus undergraduate programme on a full-time basis at a public tertiary education institution.
  • Be resident citizens of a member state of the African Union.
  • Scholarships shall not be awarded for:
  • top-up degree programmes;
  • foundation programmes; and
  • (mixed modes (distance and on-campus learning)
  • The duration of the award will be up to four years and the age limit for eligibility is above 18 years and below 25 years

2015 International ReSource Award for resilience in water management

The International ReSource Award for resilience in water management is a prize acknowledging social entrepreneurial thinking and leadership in implementing the principles of sustainability in water management.

The ReSource Award acknowledges social entrepreneurial initiatives which propose to develop, test or scale up new approaches for resolving existing social and/or ecological issues related to sustainable water management practices.

Examples include access to, use and supply of water, sanitation and hygiene in low, lower-middle and upper–middle-income countries as classified by the World Bank.

The prize combines financial and non-financial contributions (coaching/expert advice). Half of the total prize money of USD 150 000 will be allocated to three finalists (USD 25 000 each) from whom the winner (USD 75 000) will be selected. The winner will be supported during the following three years in developing, testing or scaling up his/her social entrepreneurial initiative.

ReSource Award criteria

The short and full proposals submitted will be assessed with regard to the following areas:

  • Social and ecological challenge: The proposal demonstrates a profound and authentic understanding of the social and ecological problem to be addressed.
  • Impact: The expected social, ecological and economic impact is clearly defined and in line with the scope of the ReSource Award.
  • Approach: The proposal outlines a compelling social entrepreneurial approach to address the defined challenge. The defined goal and expected impact can realistically be achieved with the approach presented.
  • Financials: There is a financially viable business plan in place based on clear and logical assumptions.
  • Competencies: A qualified team with appropriate skills and track record is in place.
  • Risk management: All relevant risk drivers and related prevention and risk mitigation measures are defined.

Process

Step I: Short Proposal

  • Participants are requested to answer the online questionnaire on their social entrepreneurial initiative by 31 May 2015, 24.00 CET.
  • All short proposals received by this due date will be assessed in June 2015 by a team of water and business experts based on previously defined criteria (see below).
  • Only forms completed in English will be accepted. Applicants who are unable to submit their application form electronically should contact the Secretary of ReSource Award.

Step II: Full Proposal

  • By end of June 2015, authors of the 10-12 best-ranked short proposals will be invited to submit a comprehensive version of their social entrepreneurial initiative online.
  • The submitted full proposals will be reviewed and assessed based on an extended catalogue of criteria.
  • Oral interviews with the applicants on 17 and 18 August 2015 will conclude the first round of the assessment.
  • The four to eight best-ranked full proposals will be invited for jury assessment.

Step III: Finalists

  • Three finalists will receive financial support (USD 25 000 each) in addition to six months of tailored coaching from experts to help them refine their proposals (October 2015 – March 2016).
  • One representative per finalist will be invited at the end of this period to travel to Zurich, Switzerland, to present their social entrepreneurial initiative to the international jury that will select the winner of the ReSource Award.
  • The decisions of the jury are final. Any recourse to legal action is hereby explicitly excluded.

Step IV: Winner

  • In addition to the USD 25 000 received while a finalist, the winner will be further supported financially (to a total value of USD 75 000, over three years) and non-financially from April 2016 to April 2019 to implement or scale up the winning social entrepreneurial initiative.
  • In all, the winner is supported financially with USD 100 000 and non-financially with specific coaching for up to 3.5 years.

If you are involved in a youth-led initiative or project established and run by young people to engage communities, we want to hear from you!

  • a short informal video (no more than 5 minutes) introducing yourself and the project/initiative – this can be recorded on your cellphone, as it’s what you say and show that counts, not the video quality. You can post your video online and include a link in your submission, or attach the video file to your entry (max 10 MB).
  • a short text about your initiative (no more than 400 words)
  • a photo of yourself and any photos (no more than three) that show your project/initiative

Selection process

All entries will be posted on the #Forests2015 blog. First-level selection will be based on the number of comments and “likes” that your entry attracts. Final selection will be based on the quality of the entry and made to ensure a diversity of speakers (gender, topic, language and continent).

Specifically the organizers will look for:

  • impact and or potential impact of youth-led initiatives
  • Projects that adopt cross-sectorial or integrated land-use approaches (forestry, agroforestry, watershed etc.)
  • projects that bring together young people of diverse backgrounds
  • engaging stories

The 2015 Children’s Prize seeks the best and most effective project that proposes to save the greatest number of children’s lives with $250,000.

The Children’s Prize is an open web-based competition focused on under-five child survival with eligibility extending to everyone, individuals and organizations, across the world. Through our entrepreneurial and scientific approaches we are ensuring that more children under the age of five survive and thrive.

The 2015 Children’s Prize seeks the best and most effective project that proposes to save the greatest number of children’s lives.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Anyone can apply.
  • Proposals will be accepted from non-profits (charities), for profits (companies), government programs, academic institutions, and individuals aged 18 years or older.
  • The Children’s Prize is available to anyone worldwide that:
  • works with or for children,
  • could save more children’s lives with more funding,
  • could save those lives within two years, and
  • has an excellent but realistic plan that includes an impact assessment.

Entries will be evaluated based on the:

  • ability to impact rates within a child mortality indicator (U5MR, IMR, NMR, etc.),
  • effectiveness, innovation and scalability of the intervention approach within global health,
  • feasibility of the proposed lives-saved estimate,
  • probability of success,
  • ease of verification, and
  • inclusion of an impact assessment.

Each proposal submitted must clearly define the specific child mortality indicator it will impact. For example, indicators may include:

  • Under Five Mortality Rate (U5MR): also referred to as Child Mortality Rate, is the probability of dying between birth and exactly five years of age expressed as per 1,000 live births.
  • Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): is the probability of dying between birth and exactly one year of age expressed as per 1,000 live births.
  • Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR): is the probability of dying before reaching 28 days of age, expressed as per 1,000 live births in a given year.
  • Perinatal Mortality Rate  (PMR): is the number of perinatal deaths (defined as a stillbirth or an early neonatal death) over the total number of births (stillbirths and live births) per 1,000 total births.

The Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society’s Emerging Leaders International Fellows Program provides leadership training through seminars with Third-sector practitioners, research based on best practices, and the application of a comparative framework.

Fellows are based at The Graduate Center of The City University of New York, where they design and pursue an individualized research project. In addition, they attend weekly seminars, explore work of key agencies and foundations, meet with nonprofit leaders and study U.S. and international community foundation models.

Eligibility:

  • The program is geared to young professionals interested in strengthening community philanthropy and building capacity in local Third-sector institutions.
  • Emerging leaders at community foundations and similar place-based grantmaking organizations are especially encouraged to apply.
  • The program is open to practitioners and researchers in the US and overseas.College or university degree and strong spoken and written English language skills are required.
  • TOEFL scores or the equivalent are requested from those whose education was in a language other than English.  Alternately, please provide a statement describing your facility with the English language within your professional sphere.
  •   Applicants should have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the nonprofit/NGO/grantmaking field.
  • Award recipients must have a strong institutional base and be well-placed to implement research recommendations.
  • Preference is given to candidates who are
  • 1) affiliated with a community foundation or initiatives to support the development of community philanthropy organizations and practice, and
  • 2) who illustrate in their proposals a clear interest in furthering the work of community foundations and strengthening the local culture of philanthropy.
  • Candidates affiliated with other institutions in the philanthropy sector who submit proposals on current trends and practices in philanthropy (other than community foundations) may apply for consideration on a tuition basis or with financial support from individual or institutional sponsors.

Benefits

  •  Full fellowship awards cover the costs of tuition, single-room dormitory accommodations with shared facilities at International House (adjacent to Columbia University) in Manhattan, medical insurance, program materials, local meetings, local travel and other selected program-related costs.
  • Tuition-based or institutionally-supported appointments may also be made, pending approval by the selection committe
  • A select number of full fellowship awards are available, which cover tuition, accommodations and other program-related costs.  These are earmarked for citizens of countries other than the United States or for United States citizens from communities under-represented in the grantmaking sector.

The 3rd Heidelberg Laureate Forum will take place from August 23 to 28, 2015, with the dates alternating each year between August and September. The HLF was initiated by the German
foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), which promotes natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). The Forum is organized by the HLFF along with the KTS and HITS.

  • The prestigious HLF offers a select group of young researchers in mathematics and computer science the extraordinary chance to meet the preeminent scientists of their field for one week of cross-generational, scientific dialogue.

Travel Grant:

  • The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation offers 15 travel grants of up to 3,000 euros to enable journalists to report on this unique gathering of the pinnacle in computer science and mathematics. Grants cover the travel costs as well as board and accommodation during the stay in Heidelberg.

  • Until June 30, 2015, journalists from all over the world are invited to apply, irrespective of their media affiliation (print,  TV, online, radio).

Applications are now open for the 2015 Scholarships for International Students at Group of Vistula Universities, Poland. The universities are offering up to 10 scholarships for International Students to pursue BA (Bachelor) programme. Scholarships are awarded in the field of Art, Design, Economy, Business, Management, Philology.

This scholarship is awarded through the competition “Perspective” organized by the universities, where the main prize is 100% scholarship for any BA program at the Group of Universities Vistula in Warsaw, Poland.

Criteria

  • The competition is addressed to the pupils of all the upper secondary schools in Poland and their equivalents outside the Polish borders.

The South african-German Centre for Development Research (DRD) offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships per year for applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record, to pursue development-related Masters and PhD studies.

Scholarship Worth:

Scholarships include monthly allowances of 650 Euro plus travel allowances for Master candidates and 900 Euro plus travel allowances for PhD candidates.

2015/2016 Edinburg Napier University African Postgraduate Scholarships

Students who are domiciled in Africa at the time of application and are self-funding their course are eligible for a merit based scholarships of between GBP £1000 – £3000 for entry onto a full time postgraduate programme in September 2015 and January 2016.

The scholarship amounts for applicants with the qualifications below are usually as follows:

Students with offers for laboratory based courses  (£13,960 course fees)

  • Bachelor degree at 2:1 or above – fee reduction of £3,000
  • Bachelor degree at 2:2 – fee reduction of £2,000

Students with offers for classroom based courses (£12,000 course fees)

  • Bachelor degree at 2:1 or above – fee reduction of £2,000

Description

PGLS is a component school of Preparing Global Leaders Foundation  (PGLF), an educational non-profit dedicated to changing the paradigm of leadership through intensive institutes, seminars, and summits. PGLF operates programs currently in Russia, Macedonia, Croatia, and Jordan and its program alumni hail from over a hundred countries.

The Preparing Global Leaders Summit (PGLS) is a premiere international educational program for the best young professionals in the world. The program seeks to prepare aspiring global scholar-leaders with the tools that are necessary for effective leadership in an increasingly complex world.

Students will join a distinguished faculty that includes PGLF founder Dr. Sam Potolicchio (Georgetown University, New York University, RANEPA), former Rhodes Scholar and current Columbia University Professor Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, and Dr. Branden Thornhill-Miller (Oxford, Sorbonne).

Students and young professionals take short courses from internationally recognized faculty and participate in a range of leadership simulations. Specifically, participants will learn how to develop an opposable, interdisciplinary mind with an ability to work with and across ideological, national, religious, class and racial differences.

They will learn how to communicate effectively, think both critically and creatively with a particular emphasis on how to advance the global public good. PGLS 2015 curricula and simulations will cover the following topics: negotiation, strategic thinking, public speaking, networking, persuasion, branding, public policy, statistics, comparative politics, demography, citizenship, civil wars, geopolitical strategy, Russia and the West, and Russian politics and history.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

• be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old;

• be linked to an organization or a network (e.g. youth council, youth NGO, not-profit organization, youth-led organization, community organization, faith-based organization, youth
network or platform, college, university), or be a social entrepreneur, blogger, intern or volunteer;

• possess upper-intermediate English proficiency;

• complete at least first cycle of university studies.

Costs

The total price for PGLS 2015 is 1200 USD. The fee includes welcome and final dinners, accommodations, daily breakfast and lunch, tutorial materials, tuition and transportation to and from the airport.

Scholarships:

  • There are a number of generous merit-based scholarships offered for qualified participants. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you need to apply by June 1, 2015.

2016/2017 M Literary International Residency Programme (India and China)

Conceived by M Restaurant Group and Shanghai International Literary Festival founder Michelle Garnaut and writer Pankaj Mishra, the M Literary Residency Program offers two residencies annually, one in Shanghai, China and one in India.

The residencies are each three months long, and candidates should apply for only one.

The M Literary Residency Programme, fully funded by M Restaurants, grew from its Literary Festivals, as heard from writers about what was needed to nurture and produce the best writing in this region.
The Residency was established to disseminate a broader knowledge of contemporary life and writing in India and China today and to foster deeper intellectual, cultural and artistic links across individuals and communities.
The intent of the Residency is to provide space and time primarily for writing and location-specific research. It is not to be used as a base for travel for research or leisure.
Application Procedure:Applicants may apply for ONE of two M Literary Residencies:

  •  Bangalore, India: A 10 week residency at Sangam House, in a rural setting near Bangalore, South India from late 2016 to early 2017. (Please note: Residency dates are set by Sangam House.)
  • Shanghai, China: 8-10 week residency in Shanghai. The residency must be taken up before December 31st, 2016, and be completed in one continuous period.

Eligibility

  • The residencies are open to all writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and dramatic prose.
  • There are no nationality restrictions, however, applicants should be over 21 years old at the time of application and be writing in English.
  • Unpublished authors and past applicants are also eligible.

Funding

The successful applicants will have transportation costs to and from the residencies covered by the M Residency. Applicants are responsible for their travel/medical insurance and visas.

Accommodation

  • Bangalore: a single room and three meals a day will be provided. Accommodation is in a rural village, approximately 45km for Bangalore which some might consider isolated, so applicants should be seeking a period of quiet, sustained work.
  • Shanghai: a studio-style apartment and a stipend of RMB6,000 towards the cost of meals will be provided.
  • Accommodation is centrally located and in the thick of a noisy city. Whilst it is intended that the writer should be seeking a period of sustained work, it must be noted that this will probably not be happening in very quiet surroundings.
  • The accommodation provided in Bangalore and Shanghai is suitable only for single occupancy. The residency intended for a single applicant only.

Working professional journalists in developing and transitioning countries can apply for a fellowship to travel to the 9th Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Lillehammer, Norway (October 8-11, 2015).The conference is the seminal event in international investigative reporting and is held only once every two years.
The three-day conference will feature the world’s leading investigative reporters, top data journalists, and experts in security, collaboration, teaching and training, freedom of information, and more.
Eligibility:

  • These fellowships are available both for established and young promising journalists with at least three years of experience who are willing to learn state of the art methodologies and techniques and help us spread investigative journalism around the world.
  • Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in investigative or data journalism.
  • As part of the fellowship, following the GIJC15, grantees are expected to produce a story or give a presentation about the conference in their home countries to help spread investigative journalism worldwide.
  • Applicants must be able to communicate and understand English, as this will be the main language of the conference.

The African Entrepreneurship Award, powered by BMCE Bank of Africa, offers a mentoring journey for business ideas that can impact and improve lives in Africa. The goal of the African Entrepreneurship Award is to inspire African entrepreneurs – living in Africa and abroad – to develop businesses across the African continent, creating jobs that improve lives.

The Award partners with entrepreneurs, business leaders and leading academics from Africa, Asia, Americas, UK and Europe. These partners are mentors who provide coaching to African entrepreneurs at every step of this journey. The journey includes USD$1 million across three categories: Education, the Environment and Uncharted areas – never been done before in Africa.

The African Entrepreneurship Award will help you start or grow your business to create jobs and impact Africa. Every entrepreneur needs more than money. You need mentors to come alongside you, advise you, ask hard questions, encourage you, comfort you, and help you persevere.

Eligibility

You, the entrepreneur, must meet the following criteria as you submit your business proposal:
  • You must be a citizen of an African country
  • You must be a minimum of 18 years old as of October 1, 2015
  • Your business must be applicable in an African country
  • Your business must be relevant to one of these categories:
    • Education – positively impact education in Africa
    • Environment – positively impact the environment in Africa
    • Uncharted – a high-impact business venturing into unexplored territory or untested markets

Additional Information

  • You can submit a proposal as a resident of any country worldwide – keeping in mind that you must be a citizen of an African country
    • For example, a resident of the United Arab Emirates with Egyptian citizenship is eligible for this Award
  • You can submit a proposal if you are of any age over 18 as of October 1, 2015
  • Your business can operate in any African country even if you are not a citizen of that country
    • For example, you can submit a proposal for a different country in Africa than your personal, African citizenship (e.g. a Ghanaian citizen can submit a proposal for a business in Liberia)
  • You can submit a proposal for a business already in operation
  • Your business can operate across borders in multiple African countries
  • Your business should demonstrate the potential to scale beyond one region in Africa to pan-African impact
  • You can operate in multiple countries, but you will be asked to designate a primary community in Africa that will benefit or be impacted by your business.

 

Rounds:

There will be practical mentoring in three Rounds:

  • Round 1 – Regional mentors advise you in May and June on regional issues and decide which ideas most needed in your region
  • Round 2 – Pan-African mentors advise you in July and August on how to get your idea beyond your borders to successfully impact pan-Africa.
  • Round 3 – Global Partners advise you in September on how to become sustainable and scale your idea.
  • Jury – The Final Jury of entrepreneurs, business leaders and academics from Africa, China, and the USA will meet you in person in or by video October to hear your business idea and decide the winners.

Selection

  • The First round finalists will be announced in early July.
  • Final winners will be announced in October 2015.
  • Successful applicants will be notified after July 7, and begin to receive local and international mentoring to shape their ideas.
  • Selected finalist will then be trained to pitch to a Presidential Jury for a financial award of $1 Million, by October 2015.

  • Can you tell a complex statistical story in an entertaining and thought-provoking way?
  • If you think you’ve got what it takes, and are within the first 10 years of your statistical career, we want to hear from you.

Each year, Significance and the Young Statisticians Section of the Royal Statistical Society host a competition to promote and encourage top-class writing about statistics.

It doesn’t matter what you choose to write about, so long as you follow these basic guidelines:

  • The article should be interesting, engaging and easy to read.
  • Technical terms and mathematics should be kept to a minimum, and explained clearly where used.
  • Readers finish the article knowing more about statistics than they did before.

Award Prize:

  • Three finalists will be invited to present their work at a special session of the Royal Statistical Society International Conference (7–10 September, Exeter, UK) and that is where the overall winner will be announced.

Competition rules

  • Entrants must be students, or within the first 10 years of their statistics careers.
  • Articles should be between 1,500 and 2,500 words long, and can include tables, figures, images and photographs.
  • Writing style must be clear and easy to read.
  • Avoid the formal layout of an academic report – the article should read like a magazine feature.
  • Technical terms and mathematics should be used sparingly, and suitably explained.
  • End references are optional, but should be limited to four.
  • Only submissions in English will be considered.
  • Manuscripts must be original and not under consideration for publication elsewhere, though we welcome magazine articles based on work in theses or in papers that have been submitted to or accepted by academic journals, provided the two are sufficiently different.
  • All articles will be assessed by a review committee. The judges will be made up of representatives from both the Young Statisticians Section and Significance.
  • Three finalists will win a one-day registration to the Royal Statistical Society Conference 2015 in Exeter, UK – but please note that travel and accommodation costs will not be covered.
  • The winning article will be published in Significance magazine, and online at significancemagazine.com.
  • Runner-up articles will be published on the Significance website, or in Significance magazine, at the editor’s discretion.

ITU Telecom World 2015 Young Innovators Competition: Conflict Challenge

Award: Two winners will be invited to join ITU Telecom World 2015 in Budapest, Hungary, October 12-15, 2015 to pitch their ideas, participate in workshops, benefit from a year of ongoing mentorship, and win seed funding.

The ITU Telecom World Young Innovators Competition is looking for entrepreneurs with innovative ideas on how ICTs can help keep people safe in conflicts. They could work on preventing conflict, improving safety and security in conflicts, rebuilding communities or peacebuilding, among other topics.

Eligibility:

  • Participants must be between 18 and 30, and can have either an established startup or the concept for a new one.
  • Eligible startups could work with many groups, civilians, especially vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly or disabled, refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), soldiers, or police or anyone else. Conflicts could include warfare, terrorism, criminal violence, and rioting, among other forms of organized or collective violence.

At least 200,000 people died in 2014 due to armed conflict. This number may, in fact, be far higher as many reports omit civilian casualties which are notoriously hard to determine or estimate. Beyond direct casualties of conflict, impact on infrastructure, communities and families cause serious harm and threats to the security.

By working to protect individuals and prevent conflict, ICTs can help to make the world a safer and less violent place for everyone. The United Nations and many other international institutions are mandated to work on issues connected to armed conflicts, such as protection, prevention and resolution.

There are roles ICTs can play in conflicts. One is by restoring infrastructure to damaged regions. They can help improve the efficiency and efficacy of healthcare and other emergency responses. ICTs can provide resources for refugees and other vulnerable groups, connecting them with aid services or helping to facilitate and coordinate those services.

They can also be key in helping to rebuild and reunite communities damaged by conflict, working to build more peaceful and orderly societies. Any and all of these are among the topics that successful applications might work on, along with a range of other issues

This scheme strengthens scientific research capacity in low- and middle-income countries, by providing support for junior researchers to gain research experience and high-quality research training at Master’s degree level.

Research should be aimed at understanding and improving public health and tropical medicine of local, national and global relevance. Public health and tropical medicine cover a wide range of health problems, including communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Topics include:

  • demographic, social science and health economic studies
  • epidemiological, field and community-based studies
  • healthcare systems and policy research
  • measurement of infectious and chronic disease burden
  • population studies
  • clinical trials and case-control studies
  • studies of disease mechanisms in the natural host
  • determinants of disease susceptibility and resistance
  • immunity or resistance in natural hosts or vectors.

Eligibility:

You should be:

  • a national or legal resident of a low- and middle-income country, and hold a first degree in subject relevant to tropical medicine or public health (clinical or non-clinical)
  • at an early stage in your career, with limited research experience, but have a demonstrated interest in or aptitude for research.

Benefits:

A Fellowship normally provides up to 30 months’ support. A period of 12 months should normally be dedicated to undertaking a taught Master’s course at a recognised centre of excellence, combined with up to 18 months to undertake a research project.

While undertaking a Master’s course, Fellows will receive:

  • a stipend. Stipends are costed based on the Trust’s Masters students scales, determined by the location of the course (Inside London* – £17 000 per year; UK Outside London – £15 000 per year; Outside the UK – applicants are advised to check with the prospective training institution regarding living costs; Other – for individual cases where additional funding may be required, e.g. dependants accompanying the awardee, please contact the Trust for advice).
    *Inside London covers institutions within Greater London, for example London Universities.
  • travel costs (e.g. outward and return airfares)
  • support for approved tuition fees. Master’s course fees will be paid according to the rate charged by the training institution.

In providing Georg Forster Research Fellowships (HERMES) for postdoctoral researchers, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly-qualified scientists and scholars from abroad who are just embarking on their academic careers and who completed their doctorates less than four years ago to spend extended periods of research (6-24 months) in Germany.
The research fellowship programme is financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung–BMZ) and co-financed by the European Union ( EU) in the 7th Framework Programme.

  • if you are a researcher with above average qualifications in a developing or transition country (see list of countries),
  • if you intend to carry out long-term research of your own choice (6 to 24 months) at a research institution in Germany together with an academic host you have chosen yourself,

  • if you want to contribute to the exchange of knowledge and methods between Germany and your country of origin.
A candidate’s academic eligibility is assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
  • academic record and academic performance to date (mobility, determination, breadth of research activities, academic productivity)
  • quality of key publications specified in the application (originality, degree of innovation, applicant’s contribution in cases of multiple authorship)
  • originality and innovation potential of the suggested research outline (significance for the advancement of the discipline, convincing choice of academic methods, prospects for academic development of the applicant, clear focus and feasibility of realization within the requested funding period and at the chosen host institution)
  • the applicant’s future potential (academic potential, further academic development, career prospects)
Application requirements
  • Doctorate or comparable academic degree (Ph.D., C.Sc. or equivalent), completed less than four years prior to the date of application.
  • Candidates who have nearly completed their doctoral degrees are eligible to apply provided that they submit the manuscript of their dissertation or publications containing the results of their dissertation, however, at the earliest, 6 months prior to the completion of their dissertation
  • Academic publications reviewed according to international standards and printed in journals and/or by publishing houses.
  • Choice of a research outline of major relevance to the future development of the candidate’s country or region of origin
  • Confirmation that research facilities are available and mentoring agreement and a detailed expert’s statement including a statement on ethical issues concerning the planned research stay by an academic host at a research institution in Germany.
  • Expert reviews from the doctoral supervisor and two other academics qualified to give well- founded comments on the applicant’s qualification, preferably including reviewers not working at the applicant’s own institute

Benefits:

  • In addition, the Humboldt Foundation grants up to four Georg Forster Research Awards every year to leading researchers from developing countries.
  • a monthly fellowship of 2,650 EUR for postdoctoral researchers (doctorate completed within the last four years) or 3,150 EUR for experienced researchers (doctorate completed within the last 12 years),
  • a flexible starting date and – for experienced researchers – the option of splitting the fellowship up into a maximum of three stays,
  • individual mentoring during the sponsorship period,
  • intensive German language course for fellows and their marital partners prior to the fellowship,
  • additional financial support for accompanying family members, for example, or for items like travel expenses or pension plans and

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the
promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.
In 2015, UNWTO will continue the PhD Research Programme, successfully started in 2014, which
will offer again two PhD students the opportunity to contribute to the UNWTO programme for Sustainable Development of Tourism (SDT).
The main aim of this programme is to support research to advance the general knowledge and further broaden ones’ understanding about the importance of sustainable and resilient tourism at the international level
Programme Details:
  • The PhD Research Programme will be located in Madrid, Spain, at UNWTO headquarters, working with the SDT Programme.
  • Successful candidates will be sponsored for a period of 12 months and are expected to work under the supervision of the Director of the SDT programme and/or another staff member in the programme.
  • Appropriate logistics (i.e., first-hand access to meetings and UN processes; internal access to all UNWTO documents and database and other relevant industry data and processes; own office space, computer and internet accessibility) will be made available.
ELIGIBILITY & CONDITIONS:
The researchers should possess the following knowledge and skills :
  • Applicants must be enrolled in doctoral studies and be external collaborative PhD students, but should not be in their final year of study.
  • The lump sum should be used to finance the one year stay abroad in Madrid and should not be used for tuition or other fees related to the PhD degree.
  • The successful candidate must have excellent written and spoken English.
  • Applicants must be computer literate in Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010 software,Internet and emerging Web tools,and should be able to operate standard office equipment (e.g. scanner, photocopier, etc.); experience with data management software is an asset; have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Applicants must have academic background in international affairs, sustainable development, international and/or development economics, aviation and transportation management, environmental affairs or related fields.
  • The successful PhD candidate shall conduct himself/herself at all times in a manner befitting his/her status as a holder of a UNWTO research grant. Any serious infringement
    of this general rule may lead, after consultation with the authorities concerned, to the
    termination of the research.
  • Applicants must possess a medical certificate indicating that he/she is in good health and able to undertake the research programme.
  • The researcher shall be in possession of a major global medical insurance coverage to be paid by him/her.
  • The UNWTO is not in any way committed to employ the researcher upon completion of
    UNWTO research.

Global Energy Initiative is delighted to announce the 2015 Global Energy Essay Contest. This year, GEI is asking students to present their thoughts on the topic “Road to Paris 2015: Vision, Reality, and Solutions for a meaningful Climate Agreement”.

Eligibility

Participants must be:

  • Currently enrolled students (e.g. B.A., B.S., M.A., M.S., M.B.A., M.Ed., Ph.D. or equivalent) OR
  • Degree holders who will graduated in either 2014 or will graduate in 2015.

Formatting and Style

  • Length of Essay: 1,000-1,200 words (excluding bibliography and citations)
  • All references must appear as endnotes
  • Students must produce their own work and cite sources properly and consistently
  • Information used for research that is not cited in the essay should be listed in a bibliography page at the end
  • The essay CAN NOT mention the participant’s name, university name, or location of university to ensure anonymity during the evaluation phase
  • The essay must be written in English
  • All submissions must be typed in Times New Roman, double-spaced, with standard one-inch margins and twelve-point font

Awards

All submitted essays will automatically be evaluated for the global and regional awards. The awards consist of two global winners and five regional winners.

The classification of regions is based on university locations in the main geographical regions: Africa, Europe and Russia, The Americas, South Asia and the Middle East, and East Asia and South Pacific Countries.

Journalists in Brazil, China, India, Russia and Sub-Saharan Africa have a chance to win a trip to the United States and cash prizes as part of regional competitions to recognize the best media coverage of maternal and child health and other urgent health matters such as Ebola and vaccination.

Stories focusing on these topics published, broadcast or posted online in Brazil, China, India, Russia and Africa between Dec. 1, 2014, and May 24, 2015, qualify for the contest.

  • These scholarships are to aid students in financial hardship due to the fact that they are domiciled in a country that is in crisis as a result of the political situation, war, natural disaster etc.
  • The scholarship is available for students on full time Master’s programmes (not MBA) based at the University of Bradford. Students must be self funded.

The Expat Youth Scholarship (EYS) contest is designed exclusively for students aged 13 to 21 experiencing life in foreign countries amidst unfamiliar cultures.  The contest is a testament to Clements’ ongoing commitment to the international expatriate community.  $10,000.00 (USD) in scholarship funds will be awarded to the winners of this year’s contest,

What:

  •  Take a photo visually capturing how you will use your experience living abroad to make a difference in the world, and write an accompanying short essay.

Eligibility:

  • Students ages 13-21 of any nationality who have resided in a foreign country for at least six consecutive months.
  • To qualify for the Ages 17-21 age category, you must be aged 17-21 by April 30, 2015, the deadline for entries.

Judging Criteria

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. How well the photo visually represents the subject of the entry
  2. How well the caption describes the subject of the entry, including grammar, spelling and style.

African Youth Union is working to ensure that every young African is empowered, human capabilities are maximized and the youth’s contribution is recognized and constantly reaffirmed.
This essay challenge was introduced to preserve and honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela for a better Africa. It also aims to inspire young people to learn from Mandela and to think about how each of them can use the Mandela inspiration to make a difference in the world. This competition is going to be an annual event, commencing in 2014 and it will be cantered on the inspiration provided by the late Former President Nelson Mandela.

THEME: “My Role as the Mandela of Today”

Nelson Mandala was an African who made history: after spending 27 years in jail, he served only one term as the President of  South Africa. There is no doubt that Africa needs more leaders like Mandela who are driven by an ethos of selfless-leadership and service. However,questions remain:

  • How do we produce leaders of Nelson Mandela’s caliber?
  • What does Mandela mean to you?
  • How can you use his inspiration in your daily life and inspire others? How can you carry his legacy to future generations? (your essay must  answer all the above questions)

GUIDELINES:

  • Essays may be submitted by any young person under the age of 24 (as of July 18, 2015) in one of the following age categories:
  •  Children (ages up to 14)
  • Youth (ages 15 -25)
  • Essays must be no longer than 700 words in English.

Teachers and youth directors may submit a collection of essays from their class or group. In this case please enclose  a list of participants’ names, ages and the name and contact information of the submitting teacher or director.

  • Entries open on 25 April 2015 and close on 15 May 2015
  • Entries may be submitted be submitted through this form.
  • Essays must be original and unpublished.
  • Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.
  • Copyright of the submitted essays will be assigned to the AYU.

DEADLINE:
Entries must be received by May 15, 2015

AWARD:

The following awards will be given in the Children’s category and Youth category respectively:

  • 1st Prize: Certificate and prize of R10,000 ($1000)
  • 2nd Prize:Certificate and prize of R5,000 ($500)
  • 3rd Prize:Certificate and gift 5 entrants
  • Honorable Mention:Certificate and gift twenty entrants
  • 1st prize winners will be invited an award ceremony in Kampala, Uganda scheduled for Mandela Day 2015. (Travel expenses will be covered by the organizers.)
  • Additional awards (Recognition for Effort, Best School Award, and School Incentive Award) will be given if applicable.

2015 Confucius Institute International Scholarships for study in China (Fully Funded)

For the purpose of supporting the development of Confucius Institutes, facilitating international promotion of Chinese language and dissemination of Chinese culture, as well as cultivating qualified Chinese-language teachers and excellent Chinese-language learners, Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as Hanban) launches a “Confucius Institute Scholarship” program to sponsor foreign students, scholars and Chinese language teachers to study Chinese in relevant universities of China (hereinafter referred to as “Host Institutes” ).

Category of Scholarships:

The scholarship of 2015 is divided into 5 categories:

  • Scholarship for Students of Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages（MTCSOL）,
  • Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL,
  • Scholarship for Students of Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages（BTCSOL）,
  • Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Students,
  • Scholarship for One-Semester Students.
  • Scholarship for Four-Weeks Students.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens in good health, aged between 16 and 35 (Chinese language teachers in post shall be aged below 45, and applicants for BTCSOL scholarship should be aged below 20).

Scholarship Coverage:

  • Scholarship winners are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees on campus, and are provided with monthly living allowance, and comprehensive insurance for foreign students studying in China. Monthly living allowances are provided at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):

a. CNY 2,500 for Bachelor’s Degree Students ,One-Academic-Year Students and One-Semester Students.

b. CNY 3,000 for Master’s Degree Students.

Application Procedure:

  • From the issue date of the Procedures, applicants can log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn, set up an individual account, read information and introduction of host institutes and majors, complete and submit the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form online.

Application Document:

  • Applicants should log onto the Scholarship website, fill out the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form”, and attach the electronic files of the following materials:
  • Photocopy of passport photo page
  • Photocopies of HSK、HSKK score reports
  • Notarized highest education diploma attained（scheduled graduation proof or official proof of student status
  • Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.
  • Winners of the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students in China shall submit the certificate of scholarship. Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions in their countries shall submit award proof and a reference letter from the Chinese Embassy (or Consulate) in the competition area.
  • Chinese language teachers shall submit the proof of the length of time in teaching and weekly teaching hours provided by institutes they work for.
  • Those applying for scholarship of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL are required to provide the agreement signed with the Confucius Institute or the institute which they will be working for.
