Transformative Actions Program Tap Potential Video Contest 2015 on Climate Change (1,000 Euro Prize & Social Reporting Gig at COP21in Paris France)

  • Are you a budding filmmaker with an interest in climate change and the environment?
  • Are you passionate about cities and how they can tap their potential to tackle climate change?
  • If so, keep reading for a chance to win a cash prize of 500 euro and a social reporting gig at COP21 this December.

The Transformative Actions Program (TAP) is a 10-year initiative aiming to showcase the potential of local climate action. It aims to improve cities’ and regions’ access to financing, and maximize investment in low-carbon and climate-resilient urban development and governance processes. The TAP will showcase 100 ambitious projects at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris in December 2015.

The TAP Video Contest invites you to show off your videography talent, and share your ideas on how to tap the potential for climate action.

Across the globe, people are turning the climate change challenge into an opportunity. We want to hear these stories. Your film might focus on your own actions, those of a community group or university, or perhaps the work your city or region is doing. The story is yours to tell – but here are some ideas to kick-start your brainstorming:

  • Describe an initiative that focuses on combatting climate change. How could this be scaled up to have an even greater impact in your city or further afield?
  • Share your ideas on a new or existing project that would convince your family, friends or colleagues to take climate action. What is it about this project that encourages the community to get on board?
  • Have your say on the transformative action needed to encourage sustainable development in your hometown. If you were the mayor, what would be your first order of business?

Requirements:

  • Your film can be in any digital video format – you can even use your smartphone!
  • Choose whatever film style you wish. Perhaps you want to narrate, sketch, sing, animate, or illustrate your story… Be creative!
  • Your film can be in any language, but we strongly suggest you include English subtitles and a full script.
  • Your film must not have been entered in other film contests before.

How to Apply:

It’s easy! Anyone can join, as an individual or in a group. You may submit as many entries as you like. Simply follow these steps:

  1. Create a 15 second to 3 minute digital video about tapping the potential of transformative climate action in cities or regions.
  2. Upload your film on Vine, Youtube, Youku or Vimeo.
  3. Tag your film with #TAPPotential and share your video with your social network!
  4. Write an email to [email protected] to inform us of the link by 30 September 2015. Please provide us with your name and a contact telephone number.

Selection Criteria:

The winner will be marked out of a total of 50 points on the following criteria:

  • Content: clarity and effectiveness of the video in documenting a story about climate transformation, promoting action and/or offering new solutions. (15 points)
  • Innovation, originality, and impact: telling the story in a fresh and unusual way, appealing to a broad and diverse audience and encouraging further thought and action. (15 points)
  • Technical expertise: quality of camera and audio work, effectiveness of editing and strength of script. (10 points)
  • Online impact: How many likes or views your video gets when published online. We want you to share and promote your video to your network! (10 points)

Prize

  • First prize: 500 euro
  • Second prize: 300 euro
  • Third prize: 200 euro
  • Winners will also be offered the opportunity to work alongside ICLEI’s Communications Team as a social reporter at the Cities and Regions Pavilion – TAP 2015 at COP21 in Paris. (Please note the prize does not grant entrance to the restricted UNFCCC Blue Zone at COP21.)

International Chamber of Commerce Photographic Award 2015 #OurClimate (€4,000 Euros Prize)

The International Chamber of Commerce Photographic Award 2015 is a celebration of artistic skill and outstanding photography which aims to draw attention to—and stimulate dialogue around—the global challenge of climate change.

The Award invites professional and amateur photographers from all over the world to submit applications reflecting on the theme of #OurClimate: from the causes and impacts of a changing climate, through to our response (past, present or future) to one of the biggest challenges facing humanity.

Entries will be judged by a distinguished international jury chaired by John Danilovich, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The winning photographs will be exhibited alongside a selection of shortlisted images that most powerfully illustrate the theme of #OurClimate.

The exhibition will be held in December 2015 during the landmark Paris Climate Conference (COP21), at ICC Global Headquarters in Paris. The winners will be announced at ICC’s COP21 gala reception on 8 December.

Eligibility:

  • Entry is open to anyone over the age of 18.
  • The Award is open to all photographers—whether amateur, professional or student—who are invited to submit between 1-3 thought-provoking and captivating images exploring the theme of #OurClimate.
  • THE THEME: #OURCLIMATEWorks must reflect on the theme of #OurClimate: this might range from the causes and impacts of climate change, through to public, political or commercial responses to the single biggest challenge facing humanity.

Entry Rules

  • Image data files created with any digital devices including smartphones, digital still cameras (including medium and large-format cameras), and images that have been retouched using software or by other means will be accepted.
  • Retouched photography using camera app or photo editing app is also accepted. Both color and monochrome images will be accepted. Works taken on film or scans of photographs taken by film cameras are eligible.

A title and a short description of the artwork (maximum 100 words) must be submitted with each entered photograph.

  • File format: JPEG/300dpi recommended.
  • The standard color space for the judging process is sRGB.
  • File size: Up to 20 MB per work.

Prize

The judging panel will award three prizes:

  • First prize: €2,000
  • Second prize: €1,000
  • ICC Young Photographer of the Year (26 years and under): €1,000

Selection Criteria

The winning innovations are determined based on the products’ uniqueness and their potential contribution to socio-economic development in Africa through increased efficiency and cost savings.

Seven criteria to be considered:

1. Originality: The uniqueness of the product and its superiority in comparison with
similar or alternative products in the market;

2. Marketability: The extent to which the innovation sufficiently addresses the problem
it seeks to solve at a price or model that is accessible to the target market;

3. Scalability: The extent to which the solution can be easily applied to other similar markets beyond the applicant’s immediate or local environment;

4. Social impact: The ability of the innovation to create or effect positive or desirable changes within the target community and beyond;

5. Scientific/Technical aspects: For tangible technical/scientific products; this refers to
extent to which the technical specifications of the innovation are grounded on established science and sufficiently address any anticipated product risks.

6. Gender and disability: How far various innovations went in properly integrating
gender and disability perspectives to their projects. This has become a critical part of
any futuristic innovation

7. Sustainable Development: Every innovation will also be assessed on how environmentally friendly their product or service is and how well the whole project
supports the course of sustainable development.

1. All five winners, in each category will receive $5000 each and other prizes from the sponsors.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship Programme 2016 for Study in the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme was established in October 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge; this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university.

Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

Eligibility Requirements

Scholarships are available to citizens of all countries outside the UK for a postgraduate degree in any subject at Cambridge

You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:

  • a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
  • applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge:

– PhD (three year research-only degree)

– MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree)

– One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)

Ideal Candidates:

The selection criteria are:

  • outstanding intellectual ability
  • leadership potential
  • a commitment to improving the lives of others
  • a good fit between the applicant’s qualifications and aspirations and the postgraduate programme at Cambridge for which they are applying

Scholarship Worth:

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge. It also provides additional, discretionary funding.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most generous international scholarships available. It covers the following costs:

Core components

  • the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate*
  • a maintenance allowance for a single student (£14,300 for 12 months at the 2015-16 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months)
  • one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
  • inbound visa costs & associated NHS surcharge costs

Discretionary components

The Trust also considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:

  • Academic development funding – from £500 to £1,500, dependent on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.
  • Family allowance – up to £9,630 for a first child and up to £4,110 for a second child. No funding is provided for a partner.
  • Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD.
  • Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties
  • Maternity/Paternity funding – should you require it, you may apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time
  • Some fourth year funding for PhD Scholars may be provided

Applicants apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and admission to their chosen postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge and a Cambridge College via the Graduate Admissions Office, using the GRADSAF form and supporting documents.

To be considered for postgraduate admission and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship all applicants must submit the following documents to the Graduate Admissions Office by the relevant deadline:-

Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme 2016 in EMEA for PhDStudents

The Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) was launched in 2004 and has so far supported more than 200 PhD students from more than 18 countries and 51 institutions.

Each year, PhD supervisors from academic institutions in EMEA are invited to submit their proposals for collaborative research projects with Microsoft Research Cambridge. Applications are then peer reviewed and approximately 20 projects are selected for funding.

The Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme was developed in 2004 to support research collaborations between academics in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region with Microsoft Research researchers in the Cambridge Lab. Currently, there are approximately 100 students working at universities and research organizations across the whole region on peer-reviewed projects and in collaboration with their Microsoft Research Cambridge co-supervisors.

PhD students are appointed to the selected projects and begin their research in the following academic year under the supervision of their academic supervisor, with co-supervision from a researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge.

Eligibility criteria

Only PhD supervisors should apply. If their project is selected, the supervisor has until 31 March 2017 to find the best possible student for the project; otherwise, the PhD Agreement will be terminated automatically. Only applications from institutions in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa will be considered.

For an application to be considered, the following key requirements apply:

  1. The institute agrees to the terms and conditions in the MRL Term Sheet.
  2. The applicant must be in dialogue with the prospective Microsoft supervisor prior to the submission deadline and jointly drafting the proposal.
  3. The proposed research must be closely related to the following research topics carried out at Microsoft Research in Cambridge.
 Scholarship Worth:
  • Each Microsoft scholarship consists of an annual bursary up to a maximum of three years. The monetary value of the award varies by country to reflect local differences in costs and overheads.
  • Payment is made directly to the institution. The amount of the scholarship is the maximum amount Microsoft Research pays to the institution.
  • In addition, every Scholar receives a fixed hardware allowance and conference allowance.
  • During the course of their PhD, Scholars are invited to Microsoft Research in Cambridge for a PhD Summer School that includes a series of talks of academic interest and posters sessions, which provides the Scholars the opportunity to present their work to Microsoft researchers and a number of Cambridge academics.

InternationalStudent.com wants the best video you can make, no longer than five minutes long, that tells us about your proposed study abroad. If you are already an international student, the video can tell about any trip you would like to take. Over the years, we have had all kinds of winners – wonderful animations, creative stop motion films, talented performers, beautiful videography, and simply compelling stories. Watch all the past winners to see what it takes to win.

 

  • The maximum length for your video is 5 minutes. There is no minimum length.
  • In addition to their video, each applicant must also submit a signed entry form.

 

Submitting Entry:

  • After you have completed your video. Complete the entry form and mail, email or fax it to us at the contact information below. It must be received  by 22 October 2015
  • Submit the video you created by the deadline (22 October 2015)
    Videos can be delivered in several ways:

Messe Berlin, one of the world’s leading trade exhibition companies, challenges you to create an information architecture for gathering and preserving the collective knowledge present at its trade exhibitions in order to share it with the world.

The task is to capture, preserve and publish the expertise of the exhibitors and trade visitors present in new and exciting formats, e.g. by using new technologies or forms of storytelling.

The aim of the challenge is:

  • to find a solution that extends the impact of a trade exhibition from a few days to the whole year
  • to gather knowledge that so far goes untapped and make it accessible to more people
  • to distil it so that it can be published in different formats later on and
  • to connect new people worldwide to the Messe Berlin community

Eligibility

  • Emerging social entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs aged 21 to 31 from around the world, with relevant interest and skills as well as an idea for a venture that they want to implement during DO school Fellowship.
  • Successful candidates may come from, but are not restricted to the fields of storytelling technique such as writers, bloggers, videographers, journalists but also business analysts, educators, information architects, web and information designers.
Programme Description:
  • On campus Incubation Phase
  • During the 10-week long incubation phase you will develop your personal venture plan with a support network of experienced coaches. at the same time you will work together with the other Fellows to solve the Challenge, which will teach you the skills and methods necessary to turn an idea into action.
  • Over the ten weeks you will develop a prototype for the gathering and preservation of content Messe Berlin accumulates during their shows and shape the documentation methods of the future. this process is supported by our Challenge lab, a course which offers skills, knowledge and tools necessary to successfully solve the Challenge.

Implementation Phase

  • During this 10 months period you will focus on kick starting and implementing your venture in your home country, while receiving continued online support from the Venture Lab, via the DO School Cloud.
  • Messe Berlin will continue their support through knowledge sharing, mentoring and their network.
  • Fellow ventures come in many shapes and sizes, from social businesses, to non-profit organizations, artistic projects or campaigns – however, they are always focused on helping to solve a relevant issue within the Fellow‘s home country.
  • You will graduate from the one-year DO School program with a successful start-up that is already creating tangible impact in your community.

Fee:

The DO School fellowship is a highly subsidized program, which means participants pay only a small portion of the actual costs as their tuition fee. For One-Year Programs in Berlin the tuition fee is 1,000 € excluding travel and living expenses throughout the incubation Phase in Berlin.

The First ever AU Agenda 2063 International Youth Summit to be held October 29 – November 1, 2015 – at the African Union HQ, Addis Ababa Ethiopia! This is your chance to join a large network of inspired, empowered and proactive young African leaders from all corners of Africa and the world!

The Agenda 2063 Youth Summit is expected to create awareness on the future plans of Africa, get feed backs on the formulated 50 year plan, and articulate strategies on how to implement the first 10 years of the Agenda.

Agenda 2063 African Youth Summit is an International youth assembly hosted by the Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa – Addis Ababa University charter – (YALDA-AAU.

The summit gathers more than 250 young Africans from around the globe, to deliberate the key messages of Agenda 2063, tap into diaspora engagement in Africa’s dialogues and create an inter-generational dialogue for the multiplication effect of the theme. YALDA-AAU is also very excited that the Summit will be hosted in line with the African Youth Day which will be celebrated on November 1st, 2015.

FRIDA | The Young Feminist Fund is the only youth-led fund focused exclusively on supporting global young feminist activism to advance social justice movements and agendas. FRIDA was created to bring new resources and new opportunities to young women and trans* youth globally. We believe that supporting young feminists is key to the expansion, rejuvenation and sustainability of women’s movements and organizations, both now and in the future.

The call for proposals intend to support up to 30 new young feminist groups led by young women and trans* youth under 30 years of age.

Eligibility:

  • Groups founded or led by young women or trans* youth (under 30 years) that are committed to:
    • Advancing and defending women’s rights from a feminist perspective;
    • Improving the lives of young women/trans* youth at local, national, regional or international levels;
    • Inclusive organizing, collective action and feminist movement building
    • Groups, networks, or collectives based in the Global South (Africa, Asia and the Pacific, The Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean and Central, Southern, Eastern Europe and Caucuses and Central Asia).
    • Groups founded in the past 6 years (i.e. your group was formed between 2009 – 2015).

FRIDA uses the term ‘feminist’ broadly to refer to individuals working within women’s movements or in other social movements to promote and work towards the safety, equality, justice, rights and dignity of girls, women and other marginalized groups.

Priority will be given to:

  • Small, emerging grassroots groups, networks, or collectives with little or no access to funding from larger donors.
  • Groups, networks, or collectives that are working on emerging or issues that have not received prior funding.
  • Groups, networks, or collectives located in remote underserved areas.
  • Groups, networks, or collectives that are diverse in their membership and made up of and/or working with socially marginalized young women especially: refugees, ethnic, national and caste minorities, rural women, urban poor, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, women living with HIV/AIDS, sex workers, women with disabilities, women living in armed conflicts and post conflict zones.
  • Groups using creative and innovative strategies to further their activism (including art, music, culture, poetry, social media etc).

The Animation Artist in Residence Tokyo (A-AIR), organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan (Bunka-cho), is an artist in residence program that provides three outstanding young animation artists from around the world with an opportunity to come to Tokyo and create new works while directly interacting with Japanese animation culture. It aims to promote both the creation of excellent works of animation and a better understanding of Japanese culture.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  1. Reside outside of Japan and be a citizen of a country other than Japan.
  2. Have had one of their animated works screened at an international film festival, exhibition or similar event where works from countries other than their own were also screened/featured.
  3. Be between the ages of 20 and 35 as of September 10th, 2015.
  4. Be able to speak either English or Japanese at least well enough to communicate in everyday situations.
  5. Be in good health.
  6. Have access to the equipment necessary to participate in a remote interview (i.e. a computer capable of connecting to the internet and using Skype).

Please make sure that the proof shows the event’s internationality (i.e. proof that it screens/features works from countries other than your own). 9th UNESCO Youth Forum 2015, Paris France – Young Global Citizens for a Sustainable Planet

The 9th UNESCO Youth Forum – Young Global Citizens for a Sustainable Planet – will take place in Paris, France on the 26th to the 28th October 2015. The forum will bring together over 500 young women and men from all over the world to focus on issues related to sustainable development and global citizenship and ensure that the voices of future generations remain front and centre of the new development agenda.

Discussions at this years forum will focus on how young people, committing themselves as global citizens, can contribute to the creation of a sustainable planet.

Application Criteria
  • You should be between 18 and 24 years old at the time of the Forum.
  • You should be able to show some leadership, engagement or initiative undertaken in your community/country/region or globally, preferably related to:
  • the post-2015 process and/or on issues related to the sustainable development goals, with specific focus on education and skills for sustainable development and employability, diversity and culture of peace, or rights and freedoms;
  • climate change issues, with specific focus on awareness-raising through media, mobilizing traditional knowledge and local environmental management practices, or youth solutions to address climate change
  • You should be able to cover the expenses related to your travel and stay in Paris on the occasion of the Forum.
  • You should not have participated in previous editions of the Forum.

But the future belongs to you, this generation of students, and we want to learn about your ideas on the following topics. These are challenging issues. Whether you choose to express yourself in words or in photos, we’re looking for thoughtfulness, originality, and vision.

International Student/Teacher Essay Contest, 2015: Goals for a Better World

Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs announces its seventh annual International Essay Contest, open to teachers and students anywhere in the world.

This year, the carnegie council is asking you to write about one of three selected Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs will replace the Millenium Development Goals when they expire at the end of 2015.

ESSAY TOPIC: Focusing on one of the following SDGs,  propose specific measures for your country (or region or city) to reach the goal’s objectives in the next 15 years.

  • Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls: OR
  • Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts: OR
  • Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

CONTEST REQUIREMENTS:

  • Style: Op-ed style (not academic, footnoted papers)
  • Length: 1,000 to 1,500 words
  • Format: Word document, or email. English language entries only.
  • Limit: One entry per person.

This competition is open to teachers and students of all nationalities.

All teachers, at whatever level, are eligible.

All students, from high school students through graduate students, are eligible. Non-students are automatically disqualified.

Collaborative essays between students and teachers are welcome.

Previous winners and honorable mentions are not eligible.

CLIMATE CHANGE: International Student Photo Contest

Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs announces its third annual International Student Photography Contest.

This year’s topic is Climate Change: Send us your photos that show examples of climate change OR examples of combating or adapting to climate change.    

The contest will be conducted on Carnegie Council’s Global Ethics Network,  social media platform for exploring the role of ethics in international relations. Check out last year’s winners on the theme of Fairness and its Opposite, and see below for details on how to participate.

ELIGIBILITY:

All students of every nationality are eligible. Non-students will be disqualified. The minimum age is 13.

The New and Emerging Talent Initiative (NETI) is pleased to announce the launch of its recruitment campaign for the 8th Cohort.

The NETI Programme is currently recruiting suitable candidates in the following functional areas for P2 and P3 level positions:  Child Protection, Communication, Education, Emergency, Finance, Human Resources, Monitoring & Evaluation, Programme Management, Quality Assurance, Resource Mobilization, Social Policy, and WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene).

The New and Emerging Talent Initiative (NETI) is an entry point for professionals interested in an international career with UNICEF. As part of UNICEF’s global talent management strategy the NETI Programme focuses on attracting, selecting, developing and retaining new talent.

The aim is to recruit candidates at the entry to mid-career levels who will grow and develop in the organisation. NETI participants work actively in multicultural environments within the development and humanitarian arenas, while contributing to delivering results for children.

Programme structure

  • NETI participants are given an initial one-year work appointment with a three-week Induction at UNICEF’s New York Headquarters (NYHQ).
  • During this three-week period, NETI participants familiarize themselves with UNICEF and meet HQ colleagues from the functional areas in which they will work during their field assignment.
  • Participants then return to their perspective duty stations/offices for the remainder of their one-year work appointment.
  • During their assignments, the NETI participants receive dedicated support for their development at the Induction in New York Headquarters and through the mentoring and external coaching components, which help develop their personal and professional skills and maximize their performance.

Eligibility Requirement:

  • Have completed an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) at the time of application. Any number of years of relevant professional experience is not substitute for the required educational qualifications. Please see below for important information on education requirements.
  • Have proficiency (C1 or C2) in English and another official language of the United Nations i.e., Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish; knowledge of local languages can be an asset
  • Be ready to be assigned to any UNICEF office worldwide, including hardship duty stations.
  • Have at least two years of relevant work experience for functions at the P-2 level, and at least five years of relevant work experience for functions at the P-3 level. Relevant experience should include work in developing countries and in multicultural environments.

The 2016 United Nations Regional Course in International Law for Africa is organized by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs in cooperation with Ethiopia, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Union.

The Regional Course will be held at the facilities of the ECA in Addis Ababa, from 1 to 26 February 2016. The Regional Course will be conducted in English. The course will accommodate up to 30 participants.

 

Qualifications

  • The Regional Course is open to candidates from the following countries: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • To qualify for the Regional Course, candidates must have a legal background with professional experience in the field of international law.
  • The selected participants are required to submit a medical certificate of good health and to certify that they are able to attend the entire course period.
  • The 2016 Regional Course will be conducted in English. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

Fellowship Worth:

  •  The fellowships cover the fellowship recipient’s travel in economy class, accommodation, meals, medical insurance, participation in the Regional Course and the training materials.
  • In accordance with the policies and procedures governing the administration of United Nations fellowships, participants will also receive a stipend to cover other living expenses.
  • Qualified candidates may also apply for self-funded positions. Self-funded participants bear all costs associated with their participation (travel, accommodation and living expenses).
  • Training materials and lunches during the weekdays are provided to all participants.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation awards scholarships to German and foreign students in accordance with the guidelines issued by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt). Scholarships are awarded for the regular period of study.The Heinrich Boll Foundation grants scholarships is awarded to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences or universities of the arts

ICFJ Fellowships for Journalists Covering Road Safety ( Fully Funded to attend the 2nd Global High Level Conference on Road Safety in Brasilia, Brazil)

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), traffic crashes kill more than 1.24 million people and injure between 20 and 50 million a year, with more than 90 percent of these casualties occurring in developing countries.

To help improve coverage of this global public health crisis, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) invites journalists to apply for the “Journalists’ Fellowship on Road Safety.”

What:

  • ICFJ will select 15 journalists from around the world to attend the 2nd Global High-Level Conference on Road Safety hosted by the government of Brazil and co-sponsored by the World Health Organization.
  • The conference, held in Brasilia, Brazil, from November 17-19, 2015, seeks to share knowledge and spur action on what works to prevent traffic-related fatalities and injuries and improve safety on the roads for all who use them.
  • With WHO’s support, the program will cover all Fellowship-related costs including travel to the conference, accommodations and registration.

Requirements:

Journalists who apply for the Fellowship and Training Program on Road Safety must be fluent in English. Applicants will be asked to provide the following:

• A 500-word essay detailing their motivation and goals for seeking the fellowship;
• A story idea for a road-safety reporting project that may focus on their own country and incorporates the use of digital tools and/or data as well as ways to use these tools and social media to engage audiences in a dialogue about these vital safety issues;
• A letter endorsing the journalist’s participation from an editor or newsroom manager to demonstrate understanding of the fellowship’s value and support for publishing or broadcasting the journalist’s coverage of the conference and story project;
• A resume or curriculum vitae;
• Published/posted/broadcast work samples.

Selection will be based on the journalists’ professional qualifications, relevant experience such as demonstrated interest in the topic of road safety, English-language proficiency, and endorsement by a newsroom manager.

UN-Habitat is now inviting young people between the ages of 16 to 32 from around the world to vote for their representatives for the 2015-2017 UN-Habitat Youth Advisory Board.

The Youth Advisory Board is a youth consultative body that advises UN-Habitat on strategies to engage young people in sustainable urban development.

The Board was first established at the World Urban Forum in Nanjing in 2008.Since its establishment, significant progress has been made towards mainstreaming and engaging youth in UN-Habitat programmes and major events including the Governing Council and the World Urban Forum.

Now in its fourth term, the board constitutes 14 members with equal gender representation for each region. The online voting invitation follows an initial call for nomination made through the UN-Habitat website in February 2015 that attracted over 600 strong applicants.

These applications were reviewed by the Board’s Review Committee at UN-Habitat who narrowed down to the selected 60 candidates to be included in the online voting process.

UN-Habitat thanks all the young people who offered themselves to serve on the Board and wishes them every success in their efforts to engage and empower youth in their regions

African Business Education Initiative for youth (ABE Initiative) Master’s Degree and Internship Program

At the 5th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V) held in Yokohama in 2013, the Japanese Government stated its policy of strengthening support for the on-going dynamic growth of Africa with stronger public-private partnerships.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo ABE announced the “ABE Initiative” or “African Business Education Initiative for Youth“, a strategic five-year plan providing 1,000 youths in Africa with opportunities to study at Japanese universities as well as do internships at Japanese enterprises to foster Africa’s sustainable and sound industrial development.

African Business Education Initiative for Youth. This program offers opportunities for young and eligible African men and women to study at Master’s courses in Japanese universities as international students and to experience internships at Japanese enterprises in order to develop effective skills and knowledge in various fields for contributing the development of industries in Africa.

Eligibility:

Followings are basic eligibility requirements written in General Information as guidance. For making sure, please refer to JICA office in your country for details.

  • Nationality : Citizens of one of the 54 African countries
  • Age: Between 22 and 39 years old (as of April 1st in the year of your arrival in Japan
  • Degree: A bachelor’s degree holder
  • Job experience
    Applicants from government sectors/ educators who have both of the following:At least 6 months working experience at their current organization -Permission from their current organization to apply
  • English ability : Have adequate English proficiency, both in written and oral communication (IELTS score of over 5.5 is preferred)
  • Clear understanding of the objective of the Program
    Clearly understand the objective of this program and have a strong will to contribute to the industrial development of their country while broadening and strengthening the linkage between their country and Japan
  • No other scholarship programs : Not currently applying or planning to apply to scholarship programs offered by other organizations
  • Health condition: Have good health condition, both physically and mentally, to complete the program
  • Other: Not Military personnel

Expected Participants

Following three (3) types of personnel are expected as Participants;

  • Persons from the Private Sector : Young individuals who are or will be involved in economic activities in the local private sector maintaining and developing strong ties with Japanese companies.
  • Governmental Officials : Young officials, such as civil servants, who take part in governance and policy-making in order to enhance industries to whose development Japanese companies can contribute.
  • Educators : Young individuals who are responsible for educating in Higher Education and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) institutions in Africa, in order to enhance capacity building in related industries.

Scholarship Worth:

Japan International Cooperation Agency  will provide the following
expenses for participant of the program which are equivalent to similar JICA schemes.
  • Tuition at Japanese university master’s degree programs
  • Allowances for living expenses, outfit, shipping etc.
  • Living Allowance: 144,000-147,00 yen/month
  • Air Fee: Return Ticket (Arrival and Return)
  • Outfit Allowance: 106,000 Yen – One Time (Month of First Arrival)
  • Preparation Allowance: 54,000 yen – One Time
  • Moving Allowance- 190,000 Yen
  • Books Allowance- 30,000 Yen – One Time/Year
  • Interior Research – 50,000 Yen – One Time/Year

Number of Participants/ Durations

Participants will be selected and dispatched to Japan in 4 batches and the number of participants for each batch is planned as follows.

  • 1st batch (arrival in Japan in 2014): 150 participants from 4 countries (Republic of Kenya, United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Mozambique and Republic of South Africa)
  • 2nd batch (arrival in Japan in 2015): 350 participants from 54 African countries
  • 3rd batch (arrival in Japan in 2016): 300 participants from 54 African countries

Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women (WAAW) is pleased to announce its 2016 scholarships, offering $500/year for need-based female African students admitted to a University, College or institute of higher learning in Africa. WAAW Foundation is a U.S. based non-profit organization focused on Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women.
WAAW promotes Science and Technology education among African girls, and works to ensure they are engaged in technology innovation for Africa.
Eligibility:
    • Female students of African origin, living and studying in Africa.
    • Currently enrolled in undergraduate B.S.degree program.
    • Studying STEM related courses in a University or college in Africa.
    • Demonstrable financial need, and
    • Excellent Academic Record.
    • Below the age of 32 years.
    • Graduation date is after December of award year
  • Candidates must demonstrate financial need and excellent academic record. Special consideration is given to underprivileged students such as orphans, girls impacted by HIV or students in first or second year of study.

Scholarship Worth:

  • Scholarship recipients receive an award of $500 for the 2016 academic year, or the equivalent in their country’s local currency. Prior scholarship recipient may reapply for renewal the following year, with proof of continued excellent academic performance

2016 United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme in Hague, the Netherlands (Fully Funded)

Applications for the 2016 International Law Fellowship Programme are currently being accepted.
The Fellowship Programme provides high-quality training by leading scholars and practitioners on a broad range of core subjects of international law. In addition, the interactive nature of the training allows the participants to share experiences and exchange ideas, which promotes greater understanding and cooperation on contemporary issues of international law.

The Fellowship Programme is intended to enable qualified professionals, in particular government officials and teachers of international law from developing countries and countries with emerging economies, to deepen their knowledge of international law and of the legal work of the United Nations and its associated bodies.
The Programme

  • The Fellowship Programme consists of an annual six-week summer course at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands. The participants attend lectures and seminars in international law organized by the Codification Division as well as the public international law session at The Hague Academy of International Law.
  • The lectures and seminars organized by the Codification Division are given by eminent scholars and practitioners in international law from different regions and legal systems.

Qualifications

  • To qualify for the Fellowship Programme, candidates must have a legal background with professional experience in the field of international law.
  • The selected participants are required to submit a medical certificate of good health and to certify that they are able to attend the entire course period.
  • The Fellowship Programme will accommodate 21 participants from developing countries and countries with emerging economies.
  • The 2016 Fellowship Programme will be conducted in French. Fluency in spoken and written French is required.
VENUE AND COURSE LANGUAGE
  • The Fellowship Programme will be held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, from 27 June to 5 August 2016.
  • The 2016 Fellowship Programme will be conducted in French. Fluency in spoken and written French is required.
  • Applicants whose mother tongue or language of instruction is not French are required to submit proof of their language abilities. Applications without a valid language certification will not be considered.

As the world prepares to adopt the new set of development goals, the ONE Campaign invites civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations and other groups based in Africa to apply for the $ 100,000 (USD) 2015 ONE Africa Award.

Eligible organizations include those that can demonstrate commitment and success in their advocacy to promote the attainment of one or more of the Millennium Development Goals.

The 2015 ONE Award provides a bridge between previous efforts geared towards MDGs and future efforts to contribute to the new development agenda enshrined in what will be called Sustainable Development Goals, by 2030.

The ONE Africa Award aims to recognize, reward, and advance the exceptional work of organizations, founded by Africans and based in Africa, dedicated to helping Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The $100,000 award will bring recognition to innovative African efforts to fight poverty and will incentivize more of such efforts.

Each year, The ONE Campaign awards the prize of $100,000 which is underwritten by an endowment from The Howard G. Buffet Foundation to recognize, advance and reward the exceptional work of an African organization that works toward the achievement of one or more of the Millennium Development Goals. The award is in its eighth year running.

Eligibility Criteria:

Award recipients can be exceptional organisations and other groups demonstrating commitment and success in assisting Africans in meeting one or more of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through innovative advocacy based programs.

  • Qualified recipients may be engaged in direct services to achieve any of the MDGs but must demonstrate a strong advocacy component integral to the delivery and success of their programs.
  •  Qualified recipients may be advocacy/pressure groups and think tanks engaged in governance activities such as the monitoring of flows of resources and/or holding governments accountable to commitments to MDG attainment.
  • Award recipients can be exceptional organizations and other groups demonstrating commitment and success in assisting Africans in meeting one or more of the MDGs through innovative advocacy based programs.

Categories

Organizations will be graded in 5 categories and will be awarded between 1-10 points ineach of these categories:

i. Extent to which the organization has designed and implemented an innovative advocacy program that employs new approaches to impact in a given sector(s).

ii. Ability to demonstrate and communicate specific indicators of progress and impact linking work to a given sector(s) in a clear results-oriented framework.

iii. Demonstration of the ability to replicate efforts of the organization to take intervention to scale.

iv. Demonstration of strong internal and constituency accountability mechanisms (i.e. community leadership consultations and involvement in programs to demonstrate the interventions are relevant to the majority of the poor in the target community and empowers them in a sustainable way) along with transparency of operations.

v. Extent to which the organization has employed creative partnerships to achieve its goal(s) and ensure coordination with other development actors. These partnerships may include public and/or private sector players.

Eisenhower Fellowships (EF) exists to inspire leaders around the world to challenge themselves to think beyond their current scope, to engage others, including those outside of their current networks, and to leverage their own talents to better the world around them.
The Eisenhower Fellowships Africa Program will bring a diverse group of up to 25 ascendant leaders from Africa to the United States for individualized fellowships to develop their leadership skills and foster collaborations with Eisenhower Fellowships’ global network of influential leaders.
Chaired by General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret), EF brings two groups to the U.S. annually, each composed of approximately two dozen outstanding mid-career Fellows (ages 32 – 45), drawn from 53
different countries.
Over a seven-week period, each Fellow receives an intensive, individually-designed program in his or her
professional field. Fellows are interviewed by high-level in-country nominating committees and selected by a committee at the Eisenhower Fellowships ’headquarters in Philadelphia.
Eligibility Criteria:
  •  Eisenhower Fellowships seeks a diverse mix of applicants, ages 32-45, from a wide range of professional sectors.
  • EF provides a unique leadership development opportunity for individuals who have a demonstrated track record of significant professional and community achievements and who seek to tackle big challenges in the future.

The Forbes Under 30 $1 Million Change the World Competition is the largest-ever competition for young social entrepreneurs, funding those disruptive and scalable ideas that address global challenges.

The competition calls on social entrepreneurs with disruptive and scalable ideas with the potential to change the world. It is open to both nonprofit and for-profit enterprises. This is not a business plan competition – organizations or companies must already be in operation and the prize money should be utilized to accelerate the most promising ideas.

The challenge will award a total of $1,000,000 USD in cash and in-kind prizes. The awards and/or investments will come from the following Sponsoring Organizations: The Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, the Case Foundation, the Pratt Foundation, the Keywell Foundation and entrepreneur Bob Duggan, plus an in-kind advertising grant from Forbes.

Eligibility

The challenge is open to:

  • Active social entrepreneurs who are under the age of 30 at the time of the competition (i.e., born after October 6, 1985) who are a founder, co-founder or top executive of their organization.

  • Applicants from anywhere in the world.

  • Those who are already actively engaged in a social enterprise – this is not a business plan contest, but rather one that will reward and accelerate those entrepreneurs already making a difference.

  • Both nonprofit and for-profit social entrepreneurs – finalists will come from both categories. ​

Benefits:

  • Five or six finalists, selected from the complete pool of competitors, will receive a cash award of $100,000 USD.
  • They will then compete on-stage at the Forbes Under 30 Summit in Philadelphia on October 6, 2015 in front of 2,000 world-class mentors and the best young entrepreneurs and game-changers in the world, as culled from the Forbes 30 Under 30 lists.
  • The overall winner will receive at least $400,000 USD in additional cash and in-kind support, bringing their award total to at least $500,000 USD, and the overall award total to $1,000,000

  • Five or six $100,000 USD prizes (or equivalent); and

  • One $400,000 USD prize (or equivalent) to the overall winner

  • Finalists will be invited to participate in the Under 30 Impact Lab – an afternoon during which the attendees at the Under 30 Summit will work with challenge finalists to help them solve problems and accelerate their growth.

  • Applications will be screened by the Wharton Social Impact Initiative of the University of Pennsylvania. The finalists will be announced in early September, before competing on the main stage at the Forbes Under 30 Summit on October 6.

2015 Barclays Tech Lab Africa Programme for FinTech & Health Start-Ups in Africa

Tech Lab Africa is a 13-week venture programme supported by Barclays Africa. 8-10 Ventures will be selected to join this exciting programme.

This programme forms part of a global initiative to plug start-ups, corporates and innovators into a physical and digital global network in order to connect , co-create and scale solutions that benefit customers

The programme objectives are to output a portfolio of ventures that Barclays Africa can potentially:

  • Partner with

  • Present to our Wealth Clients for Angel Investment opportunities

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants who meet the following criteria may apply:

  • Venture proposition should address or solve existing challenges in the relevant sector or create opportunities in previously unchartered areas
  • At a minimum, the ventures must have a working prototype
  • Formal trading entity must be established
  • Evidence of market traction is preferable
  • Preference to revenue generating ventures will be given
  • Core management team must be present at the RISE Cape Town site for the duration of the programme
  • Venture team must commit to mentoring for the duration of the programme
  • Agree to the Tech Lab Africa Participants Terms and Conditions, as well as the investment terms as described under the investment section contained herein

The Tech Lab Africa Programme:

The 13 week programme will consist of several components each week highlighted below:

  • Company Soapbox: Companies to present targets for the week and progress against milestones with feedback
  • Industry Expert Presentations: Information sessions on various topics relevant across the industry
  • 1-on-1 Mentor Sessions: Barclays’ mentors and external mentors to schedule time to mentor their selected ventures
  • Office Hours with Subject Matter Experts: Tax, Accounting, Finance, Tech, Legal, Marketing, HR, etc. experts will avail 7 hours of their time per week to any and all ventures

The Next Einstein Forum (NEF) is working to build a targeted team of 54 young Ambassadors, one from each African country, to participate in the NEF Global Gathering 2016, champion African science, technology, engineering and math globally and become part of the growing NEF community.

The first NEF Global Gathering will be hosted by H.E. President Macky Sall in Dakar, Senegal from the 8-10 March, 2016. The three-day NEF Global Gathering will showcase often underreported scientific progress in Africa, holding up the NEF Fellows as examples of the exceptional scientific potential and progress across Africa.

NEF Country Ambassadors Benefits

Eligibility Requirements:

  • 42 years of age or less as of 31 December, 2015
  • Resident of an African country
  • A history of leadership and engagement in the community
  • Advanced studies or professional certificates, personal projects, demonstrated entrepreneurial achievements and similar – a Doctorate is not required
  • Applicants are encouraged from all fields of science, including basic sciences, STEM, health and social science fields
  • Demonstrated passion for raising Africa’s profile in science and/or social science
  • An active profile in the community of work/study and/or online including social media
  • Able to clearly communicate to an audience in English or French

NEF Country Ambassadors Responsibilities

  • Act as NEF’s ambassador, representing one’s own country at NEF events.
  • Write original content and cross-post content for the NEF, including but not limited to blog articles, news updates on science in one’s local community, profiles of scientists in one’s community, and other activities to promote the NEF
    • Actively promote the NEF to social media followers and regularly contribute ideas to the NEF team about ways to keep the online community informed and interested in the NEF
    • Ambassadors should expect to spend a total of between 1 to 2 hours per week writing, editing, posting updates, news and articles related to science in Africa and the NEF, and conversing with NEF Fellows and the scientific community at large. The hours may increase during the week of the Global Gathering event
    • Make presentations to students, audiences, special classes and events about the NEF and science in Africa
    • Other responsibilities suggested and recommended by the Ambassadors

Selection Guidelines

  • Selection of ambassadors from individual countries will be based on merit and upon submission of a written application, CV and two-minute video answering the personal statement questions below.
  • Qualification will be based on academic and leadership potential. Examples of notable achievements to be considered in the selection of a NEF Ambassador include:
    • Membership in professional associations/bodies
    • Leadership role in projects/activities/communities
    • Entrepreneurial activities
    • Articles/blogs/applications published
    • Prizes and other awards in high ranking bodies, academies, communities etc.
    • The type and number of invited talks at national, regional and international conferences
    • Past academic achievements and involvements
    • Volunteer and internship experience
  • The personal statement should address the following two questions:
    • What I want to learn from and share at the NEF Global Gathering?
    • What are at least three strategies I will use to share this knowledge with at least 20,000 people when I return to my country?

Selection Process

  • The selection will be done by a panel of eminent scientists including members of the NEF Scientific Programme Committee.
  • The selection process will aim for the following:
    • At least 40 percent of selected NEF Ambassadors are women
    • At most one NEF Ambassador from each African country

2016 John Dillon Memorial Fellowship for Developing Countries Students, Australia

The John Dillon Memorial Fellowship was established by ACIAR in recognition of Professor John L. Dillon’s life-long support for international agricultural research. The Fellowship scheme serves the memory of John Dillon by providing career development opportunities for outstanding young agricultural scientists or economists from ACIAR partner countries who are involved in a current or recently completed ACIAR project. 8-10 Fellowships are offered annually.

The Fellowship aims to develop leadership skills in the areas of agricultural research management, agricultural policy and/or extension technologies. This is achieved by providing exposure to Australian agriculture across a range of best-practice organisations involved in research, extension and/or policy making.

Eligible African Countries

Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania,  and Zimbabwe can apply for these John Dillon Memorial fellowships.

Fellowship Worth:

Arrangements for the Fellowships will be flexible, and the following points are intended to indicate features of the program:

  • Fellowships normally involve a 5-6 week period in Australia.
  • Fellows are hosted by 1-2 Australian organisations (such as a Federal Government Department, a University, a Cooperative Research Centre or State Department of Agriculture) where they spend at least 50 % of their Fellowship period.
  • Fellows participate in a formal research management training course in Australia.
  • Fellows undertake a structured program of visits to various institutes, including the presentation of relevant lectures.

How to Apply:

Applications close on 31 August of the year prior to the visit program taking place.

  • Applicants must be associated with ACIAR bilateral projects that are either active or completed in the last 24 months.
  • The Fellow can be associated with either a National Agricultural Research System or a CGIAR centre (if the applicant is involved in an ACIAR bilateral project), but must be a citizen of an ACIAR partner country.

2016/2017 Czech Republic Government Scholarships for Developing Countries

The Government of the Czech Republic offers scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.

These so called Government Scholarships are designed to cover the standard length of study:

1) in Bachelor/Master/Doctoral study programmes plus one-year preparatory course of the Czech language (which is combined with other field-specific training). Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from upper secondary schools, or Bachelor’s/Master’s degree courses, as applicable, who can enrol only in study programmes in which instruction is given in the Czech language. Depending on the subject area, applicants are normally required to sit entrance examinations at the higher education institution concerned. Successful passing of entrance examinations constitutes a precondition for the scholarship award;

or

2) in follow-up Master study programmes or Doctoral study programmes. Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates of Bachelor or Master study programmes, respectively, who enrol in study programmes with instruction in the English language.

 

ELIGIBILITY :

  • The scholarships are intented solely to promote the studies of adults who are foreign nationals from developing third countries in need. Neither a citizen of the Czech Republic, nor a citizen of a member state of the European Union, nor any other foreign national with a permit to permanent residence on the territory of the Czech Republic may therefore be granted this type of scholarship.
  • Furthermore, the scholarships may not be granted to persons under 18 years of age. (The applicants have to turn 18 as of 1 September of the year when they commence studies in the Czech Republic at the latest.)
  • A limited number of scholarships is offered also to applicants from selected developing countries through the UNESCO. Each applicant is obliged to fill out an electronic application form available at: http://registr.dzs.cz/registr.nsf/unesco.
  • Prospective applicants are advised to address their inquiries concerning, among others, their eligibility and closing date for applications to the Czech Embassies in their countries.

  • Each applicant is obliged to fill in an electronic application form available at http://registr.dzs.cz/registr.nsf at the latest by 30 September of the year prior to the given academic year (i.e., the calendar year that precedes the academic year for which scholarships are offered)

The 2015 call for new members to join the Global Young Academy in 2016 is now open. Applications are sought from young, independent scholars who combine the highest level of research excellence with a demonstrated passion for delivering impact.

The Global Young Academy (GYA) provides a rallying point for outstanding young scientists from around the world to come together to address topics of global importance. As of 2014, the GYA has reached its full capacity with 200 members, leading young scientists (defined as an average age of 35 years and at the beginning of their independent academic career) from 58 countries and all continents, and 63 alumni. Members are selected for the excellence of their science and their commitment to service and are serving five-year terms

Research fields:

The call is open to all scholars working in any research-based discipline, including the sciences, medicine, engineering, social sciences, the arts and humanities.

Excellence:

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of excellence in their discipline.

Impact:

The Global Young Academy is committed to a broad range of programs around the world to support young scholars, promote science to a broad audience, engage in policy debate, and foster international and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Applicants should provide evidence of interest or experience in one or more of these areas.

Age/career point:

Applicants should be in the early years of their independent careers.

The majority of the GYA’s members are aged 30-40 and the typical period from completion of a PhD or similar degree is 5-10 years.

Applicants falling significantly outside these ranges may be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Diversity:

Application is welcomed from all qualified candidates.

The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards comprises national and international adjudication. The first assessment of entries is at country level with a panel of local judges selecting country winners and runners-up who go through a round of preliminary judging which culminates in the selection of the final winners. A regional panel selects the top four entries.
Last year the panel was chaired by the inspirational European Space Agency Astronaut, Paolo Nespoli, assisted by a panel of industry experts who commended the standard of the competition.
Prize:
  • Country winners receive exciting country prizes and go on to compete against each other for the overall continental awards.
  • The overall essay and poster winners are eligible for a once in a lifetime trip for two to the Eutelsat facilities in Paris, with the essay winner traveling onwards to witness a live rocket launch.
  • Runners up will win a trip to South Africa as guests of MultiChoice Africa. Schools attended by the overall winners will also receive a DStv installation, including dish, television, state-of-the-art PVR decoder and free access to the DStv Education Bouquet.

2015 UNESCO/Merck Africa Research Summit  in Geneva, Switzerland 19th-20th October 2015

The Merck Africa Research Summit- MARS is being organised by Merck, in collaboration with UNESCO, the Cambridge-Africa Programme at the University of Cambridge, and Universita di Roma, Italy. MARS aims to bring together researchers from across Africa to discuss the generation, sharing and dissemination of research data, and to prepare for the road ahead in Africa’s development as an international hub for research excellence and scientific innovation.

The annual Summit aims to contribute to building research capacity in African research community on health, with special focus on Ebola and emergent infectious diseases, to showcase innovative research taking place in projects, programs and initiatives across African universities, and by the wider African research community.

  • Up to 100 scientists / researchers will be able to attend the Summit.
  • Abstracts are invited from final year African PhD students and young investigators involved in HIV, Ebola and other infectious disease research.
  • All should be primarily based at African research institutes and Universities.

It provided a networking platform for dialogue on improving global cooperation on health research and narrowing the disparities in health systems performance between developing and developed countries. African researchers network where they exchange experience, knowledge, best practice (especially In Ebola management) and cooperate in future research and development projects. The United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) invites media worldwide to submit entries for its 20th Annual UNCA Awards for the best print, broadcast (TV & Radio) and online, web-based media coverage of the United Nations, U.N. agencies and field operations.

UNCA is a professional organization of over 200 journalists from dozens of countries representing scores of publications and broadcasters from all regions of the world, plus the major global news agencies.

The awards are open to all journalists anywhere in the world.

The Awards are:

1. The Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize, sponsored by the Alexander Bodini Foundation, for written media (including online media). The prize is for print and online coverage of the U.N. and U.N. agencies, named in honor of Elizabeth Neuffer, The Boston Globe bureau chief at the U.N., who died while on an assignment in Baghdad in 2003.

2. The Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize, for broadcast (TV & Radio) media. The prize is for broadcast coverage of the U.N. and U.N. agencies, named in honor of Ricardo Ortega, formerly the New York correspondent for Antena 3 TV of Spain, who died while on an assignment in Haiti in 2004.

3. The Prince Albert II of Monaco and UNCA Global Prize for coverage of Climate Change. The prize is for print (including online media) and broadcast media (TV & Radio) for coverage of sustainable and equitable management of natural resources and the implementation of innovative and ethical solutions in three main categories: climate change, biodiversity, and water.

4. The United Nations Foundation Prize. The prize is for print (including online media) and broadcast media (TV & Radio) for coverage of humanitarian and development aspects of the U.N. and U.N. agencies.

Requirements:

  • Coverage of the U.N. and U.N. agencies is specified in each category; the Committee welcomes coverage of all issues particularly on Millennium Developments Goals, peacekeeping operations, and nonproliferation, including the elimination of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.
  • Work in print, broadcast (TV & Radio), and online coverage must be published between September 2014 and August 2015, and be related to the U.N. and U.N. agencies.
  • Entries can be submitted in any of the official U.N. languages (English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, and Russian).
  • For broadcast entries, hard copies should be in DVD (preferably NTSC format), however electronic files and web links uploaded to the online Entry Form are preferred. A written transcript in English or French will facilitate the judging process.
  • For print media, each submission should have a maximum of four (4) articles.  Electronic files and web links uploaded to the online Entry Form are preferred.
  • Multiple or joint entries in different categories are accepted.

The International Citizen Media Award 2015 intends to honor tremendous international work in the field of citizen media and its products in the categories VIDEO and AUDIO that have been created by private, non-commercial producers.

The award distinguishes the dedication of citizens of all countries and their audiovisual products and their reporting concerning locally, regionally, globally and socially relevant topics.

Requirements:

  • Producers: single participants, groups, associations, civil initiatives, school classes and especially producers, actors and editorial teams in the  field of citizen media work, resident in any location outside of Germany
    Only one product per producer
  • Production period: between 1st of October 2014 and 30th of September 2015
  • Duration: No product should be longer than 20 minutes
  • Language: English

2015 CCMP Fellowships for Journalists to Attend the UN Climate Negotiations in Paris, France (Fully Funded)

The Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) led by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network have launched Fellowship opportunities for journalists to attend the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) being held in Paris, France.

Formed in 2007 by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), Panos London and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the CCMP has brought developing country journalists to the annual UN climate summits since 2007.

This has enabled them to cover the summit for their home media organizations, work with experienced and knowledgeable journalists from around the world, and gain a multifaceted understanding of climate change’s global impact. Numerous regional organizations also play a supporting role in the partnership.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for this Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be a professional journalist from or representing an established media house.
  • Fill out the application form at the link below, including answering essay questions that illustrate his/her commitment to reporting on climate change issues
  • Be available to travel to Paris, France with arrival in Paris on November 30, 2015 and leave no earlier than Dec 13, 2015.
  • Provide a letter of support from an editor, producer or supervisor who can confirm your ability to publish or broadcast your material in an established media organization. Freelancers are welcome to apply, but must provide this letter of support

Benefits:

  • CCMP will cover travel, lodging and daily subsistence expenses, arrange press accreditation at COP21, and provide other support services.
  • During the COP 21, the Fellows will benefit from a series of specially designed activities, including an orientation session, daily breakfast briefings, and most likely a field trip and a media clinic.
  • Please note that, although the costs for visas will be reimbursed, the process of obtaining a visa is a Fellow’s responsibility.

Application:

  • Criteria for evaluating applicants will include the prospective Fellow’s demonstrated interest in climate change issues; their audience; and the ability of the Fellowship to provide an opportunity for those journalists who might not otherwise have a chance to cover such events.
  • Journalists will be asked to submit also examples of their work, which can be sent in a native language. Nevertheless, a good command of English is expected in answering the essay questions.
  • In addition to selecting the initial slate of Fellows, targeted to be announced in September, 2015, a waitlist will also be created to select additional journalists if more funding becomes available.

2015 CGAP (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor) Photo Contest

Over the past decade, the annual CGAP Photo Contest has documented the remarkable ways that access to formal financial services can improve poor people’s day-to-day activities.
During this time much has changed. New innovations, such as digital financial services, offer great promise for better serving poor customers. Now in its 10th year, the annual CGAP Photo Contest aims to demonstrate the ways financial inclusion can help poor people transition out of poverty and lead more financially secure lives.
WHO:
  • The 2015 CGAP Photo Contest is open to all photographers at least 18 years old. (The operational team of CGAP, the World Bank, and their immediate families are excluded from participating.)

2015 CGAP Photo Contest Theme:

  • Digital Finance – Unbanked people are increasingly gaining access to financial services through mobile phones and other digital channels. Show us how poor customers are using digital services.
  • Smallholders Families – Smallholder farming households represent the largest client segment by livelihood of those living on less than US$2 a day. Show us how smallholder farmers and their families are putting financial services to use.
  • Women’s Use of Financial Services – Improving access to financial services helps women achieve economic freedom to make better choices – not only for themselves but also for their families. Show us how women around the world are improving their lives with financial services.
  • Small Business Enterprises – Providing access to finance for a small business owner might allow them to pursue her dream, support her family, and create jobs in her community. Show us how low-income entrepreneurs are using financial services to grow their businesses.

Entries must be:

  • The original work of the entrant
  • Non-infringing of the rights of others
  • Respectful of the rights, sensitivities, and culture of persons depicted
  • An accurate reflection of the subject matter and scene as it appeared, without alteration (other than standard optimization, including removal of dust, cropping, adjustments to color and contrast, etc.)
